On the stationary points of the TAP free energy

In the context of the p-spin spherical model, we introduce a method for the computation of the number of stationary points of any nature (minima, saddles, etc.) of the TAP free energy. In doing this we clarify the ambiguities related to the approximations usually adopted in the standard calculations of the number of states in mean field spin glass models.

Violation of the Fluctuation Dissipation Theorem in Finite Dimensional Spin Glasses

We study the violation of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem in the three and four dimensional Gaussian Ising spin glasses using on and off equilibrium simulations. We have characterized numerically the function X(C) that determine the violation and we have studied its scaling properties. Moreover we have computed the function x(C) which characterize the breaking of the replica symmetry directly from equilibrium simulations. The two functions are numerically equal and in this way we have established that the conjectured connection between the violation of fluctuation dissipation theorem in the off-equilibrium dynamics and the replica symmetry breaking at equilibrium holds for finite dimensional spin glasses. These results point to a spin glass phase with spontaneously broken replica symmetry in finite dimensional spin glasses.

Dynamical fluctuations in an exactly solvable model of spin glasses

In this work we calculate the dynamical fluctuations at O(1/N) in the low temperature phase of the $p=2$ spherical spin glass model. We study the large-times asymptotic regimes and we find, in a short time-differences regime, a fluctuation dissipation relation for the four-point correlation functions. This relation can be extended to the out of equilibrium regimes introducing a function $X_{t}$ which, for large time $t$, we find scales as $t^{-1/2}$ as in the case of the two-point functions.

3D Spin Glass and 2D Ferromagnetic XY Model: a Comparison

We compare the probability distributions and Binder cumulants of the overlap in the 3D Ising spin glass with those of the magnetization in the ferromagnetic 2D XY model. We analyze similarities and differences. Evidence for the existence of a phase transition in the spin glass model is obtained thanks to the crossing of the Binder cumulant. We show that the behavior of the XY model is fully compatible with the Kosterlitz-Thouless scenario. Finite size effects have to be dealt with by using great care in order to discern among two very different physical pictures that can look very similar if analyzed without large attention.

An investigation of the hidden structure of states in a mean field spin glass model

We study the geometrical structure of the states in the low temperature phase of a mean field model for generalized spin glasses, the p-spin spherical model. This structure cannot be revealed by the standard methods, mainly due to the presence of an exponentially high number of states, each one having a vanishing weight in the thermodynamic limit. Performing a purely entropic computation, based on the TAP equations for this model, we define a constrained complexity which gives the overlap distribution of the states. We find that this distribution is continuous, non-random and highly dependent on the energy range of the considered states. Furthermore, we show which is the geometrical shape of the threshold landscape, giving some insight into the role played by threshold states in the dynamical behaviour of the system.

Slow dynamics of glassy systems

In these lectures I will present an introduction to the modern way of studying the properties of glassy systems. I will start from soluble models of increasing complications, the Random Energy Model, the $p$-spins interacting model and I will show how these models can be solved due their mean field properties. Finally, in the last section, I will discuss the difficulties in the generalization of these findings to short range models.

On the approach to equilibrium of an Hamiltonian chain of anharmonic oscillators

In this note we study the approach to equilibrium of a chain of anharmonic oscillators. We find indications that a sufficiently large system always relaxes to the usual equilibrium distribution. There is no sign of an ergodicity threshold. The time however to arrive to equilibrium diverges when $g \to 0$, $g$ being the anharmonicity.

Off-equilibrium fluctuation dissipation relation in binary mixtures

In this note we present numerical simulations of binary mixtures. We study the diffusion of particles and the response to an external driving force. We find evidence for the validity of the Cugliandolo Kurchan off-equilibrium fluctuation dissipation relation. The results are in agreement with the predictions of one step replica symmetry breaking and the dependance of the breakpoint parameter on the temperature coincide with that found in simple generalized spin glass models.

Non-equilibrium fluctuation dissipation relations in binary glasses

We show that at short time aging is realized in a simple model of binary glasses. We find that below the transition point the off-equilibrium correlation functions and response functions are compatible with the relations that were originally derived Cugliandolo Kurchan for generalized spin glasses.

Mean Field Dynamical Exponents in Finite-Dimensional Ising Spin Glass

We report the value of the dynamical critical exponent z for the six dimensional Ising spin glass, measured in three different ways: from the behavior of the energy and the susceptibility with the Monte Carlo time and by studying the overlap-overlap correlation function as a function of the space and time. All three results are in a very good agreement with the Mean Field prediction z=4. Finally we have studied numerically the remanent magnetization in 6 and 8 dimensions and we have compared it with the behavior observed in the SK model, that we have computed analytically.

Equilibrium and off-equilibrium simulations of the 4d Gaussian spin glass

In this paper we study the on and off-equilibrium properties of the four dimensional Gaussian spin glass. In the static case we determine with more precision that in previous simulations both the critical temperature as well as the critical exponents. In the off-equilibrium case we settle the general form of the autocorrelation function, and show that is possible to obtain dynamically, for the first time, a value for the order parameter.

Numerical indications for the existence of a thermodynamic transition in binary glasses

In this note we present numerical simulations of binary mixtures and we find indications for a thermodynamic transition to a glassy phase. We find that below the transition point the off equilibrium correlation functions and response functions seems to be asymptotically compatible with the relations that were originally derived Cugliandolo Kurchan for generalized spin glasses.

On the replica approach to glasses

Here we review the approach to glassy systems based on the replica method and we introduce the main ingredients of replica symmetry breaking. We explain why the replica method has been successful in spin glass and why it should be successful for real glasses.

A Study of Activated Processes in Soft Sphere Glass

On the basis of long simulations of a binary mixture of soft spheres just below the glass transition, we make an exploratory study of the activated processes that contribute to the dynamics. We concentrate on statistical measures of the size of the activated processes.

Statistical properties of Random Matrices and the replica method

I present here some results on the statistical behaviour of large random matrices in an ensemble where the probability distribution is not a function of the eigenvalues only. The perturbative expansion can be cast in a closed form and the limits of validity of this expansion are carefully analyzed. A comparison is done with a similar model with quenched disorder, where the solution can be found by using the replica method. Finally I will apply these results to a model which should describe the liquid-glass transitionin high dimensions.

On the mean field approach to glassy systems

In these lectures I will study some properties that are shared by many glassy systems. I will shown how some of these properties can be understood in the framework of the mean field approach based on the replica method and I will discuss which are the difficulties which we have to face when we apply the replica method to realistic short range models. We finally present a partially successfully application of the replica method to soft sphere glasses.

Phase diagram of glassy systems in an external field

We study the mean-field phase diagram of glassy systems in a field pointing in the direction of a metastable state. We find competition among a ``magnetized'' and a ``disordered'' phase, that are separated by a coexistence line as in ordinary first order phase transitions. The coexistence line terminates in a critical point, which in principle can be observed in numerical simulations of glassy models.
