Numerical Simulations of Spin Glass Systems

We discuss the status of Monte Carlo simulations of (mainly finite dimensional) spin glass systems. After a short historical note and a brief theoretical introduction we start by discussing the (crucial) 3D case: the warm phase, the critical point and the cold phase, the ultrametric structure and the out of equilibrium dynamics. With the same style we discuss the cases of 4D and 2D. In a few appendices we give some details about the definition of states and about the tempering Monte Carlo approach.

Short time aging in binary glasses

We present some simple computer simulations that indicate that at short time aging is realized in a simple model of binary glasses. It is interesting to note that modest computer simulations are enough to evidenziate this effect. We also find indications of a dynamically growing correlation length.

Theory of continuum percolation III. Low density expansion

We use a previously introduced mapping between the continuum percolation model and the Potts fluid (a system of interacting s-states spins which are free to move in the continuum) to derive the low density expansion of the pair connectedness and the mean cluster size. We prove that given an adequate identification of functions, the result is equivalent to the density expansion derived from a completely different point of view by Coniglio et al. [J. Phys A 10, 1123 (1977)] to describe physical clustering in a gas. We then apply our expansion to a system of hypercubes with a hard core interaction. The calculated critical density is within approximately 5% of the results of simulations, and is thus much more precise than previous theoretical results which were based on integral equations. We suggest that this is because integral equations smooth out overly the partition function (i.e., they describe predominantly its analytical part), while our method targets instead the part which describes the phase transition (i.e., the singular part).

Structure of metastable states in spin glasses by means of a three replica potential

We introduce a three replica potential useful to examine the structure of metastables states above the static transition temperature, in the spherical p-spin model. Studying the minima of the potential we are able to find which is the distance between the nearest equilibrium and local equilibrium states, obtaining in this way information on the dynamics of the system. Furthermore, the analysis of the potential at the dynamical transition temperature suggests that equilibrium states are not randomly distributed in the phase space.

A Numerical Study of Ultrametricity in Finite Dimensional Spin Glasses

We use a constrained Monte Carlo technique to analyze ultrametric features of a 4 dimensional Edwards-Anderson spin glass with quenched couplings J=\pm 1. We find that in the large volume limit an ultrametric structure emerges quite clearly in the overlap of typical equilibrium configurations.

Scaling above the upper critical dimension in Ising Models

We rederive the finite size scaling formula for the apparent critical temperature by using Mean Field Theory for the Ising Model above the upper critical dimension. We have also performed numerical simulations in five dimensions and our numerical data are in a good agreement with the Mean Field theoretical predictions, in particular, with the finite size exponent of the connected susceptibility and with the value of the Binder cumulant.

Simulation of 3d Ising spin glass model using three replicas: study of Binder cumulants

We have carried out numerical simulations of the three-dimensional Ising spin glass model with first neighbour Gaussian couplings using three replicas for each sample of couplings. We have paid special attention to the measure of two types of Binder cumulant that can be constructed from the three possible overlaps between the replicas. We obtain new information about the possible phase transition and perform an initial analysis of the ultrametricity issue.

A tentative Replica Study of the Glass Transition

We propose a method to study quantitatively the glass transition in a system of interacting particles. In spite of the absence of any quenched disorder, we introduce a replicated version of the hypernetted chain equations. The solution of these equations, for hard or soft spheres, signals a transition to the glass phase. However the predicted value of the energy and specific heat in the glass phase are wrong, calling for an improvement of this method.

A mean-field hard-spheres model of glass

We present a model of spheres moving in a high-dimensional compact space. We relate it to a mixed matrix model with a $O(N)$ invariant model plus a $P(N)$ invariant perturbation. We then study the low pressure regime by performing a diagrammatic expansion of this matrix model. Finally, we show the results from numerical simulations and we present evidence for a glassy regime at high pressures.

On the number of metastable states in spin glasses

In this letter, we show that the formulae of Bray and Moore for the average logarithm of the number of metastable states in spin glasses can be obtained by calculating the partition function with $m$ coupled replicas with the symmetry among these explicitly broken according to a generalization of the `two-group' ansatz. This equivalence allows us to find solutions of the BM equations where the lower `band-edge' free energy equals the standard static free energy. We present these results for the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model, but we expect them to apply to all mean-field spin glasses.

Mean-Field Equations for Spin Models with Orthogonal Interaction Matrices

We study the metastable states in Ising spin models with orthogonal interaction matrices. We focus on three realizations of this model, the random case and two non-random cases, i.e.\ the fully-frustrated model on an infinite dimensional hypercube and the so-called sine-model. We use the mean-field (or {\sc tap}) equations which we derive by resuming the high-temperature expansion of the Gibbs free energy. In some special non-random cases, we can find the absolute minimum of the free energy. For the random case we compute the average number of solutions to the {\sc tap} equations. We find that the configurational entropy (or complexity) is extensive in the range $T_{\mbox{\tiny RSB}}<T<T_{\mbox{\tiny M}}$. Finally we present an apparently unrelated replica calculation which reproduces the analytical expression for the total number of {\sc tap} solutions.

On the Four-Dimensional Diluted Ising Model

In this letter we show strong numerical evidence that the four dimensional Diluted Ising Model for a large dilution is not described by the Mean Field exponents. These results suggest the existence of a new fixed point with non-gaussian exponents.

Replica Theory and Large D Josephson Junction Hypercubic Models

We study the statistical mechanics of a $D$-dimensional array of Josephson junctions in presence of a magnetic field on a lattice of side $2$. In the high temperature region the thermodynamical properties can be computed in the limit $D \to \infty$. A conjectural form of the thermodynamic properties in the low temperature phase is obtained by assuming that they are the same of an appropriate spin glass system, based on quenched disordered couplings. Numerical simulations show that this conjecture is very accurate in one regime of the magnetic field, while it is probably slightly inaccurate in a second regime.

On the Statistical Properties of the Large Time Zero Temperature Dynamics of the SK Model

In this note we study the zero temperature dynamics of the Sherrington Kirkppatric model and we investigate the statistical properties of the configurations that are obtained in the large time limit. We find that the replica symmetry is broken (in a weak sense). We also present some general considerations on the synchronic approach to the off-equilibrium dynamics, which have motivated the present study.

An introduction to the immune network

In this paper, after a telegraphic introduction to modern immunology, we present a simple model for the idiotypic network among antibodies and we study its relevance for the maintenance of immunological memory. We also consider the problem of computing the memory capacity of such a model.

Weighted Mean Field Theory for the Random Field Ising Model

We consider the mean field theory of the Random Field Ising Model obtained by weighing the many solutions of the mean field equations with Boltzmann-like factors. These solutions are found numerically in three dimensions and we observe critical behavior arising from the weighted sum. The resulting exponents are calculated.

Slow Dynamics in Glasses

We will review some of the theoretical progresses that have been recently done in the study of slow dynamics of glassy systems: the general techniques used for studying the dynamics in the mean field approximation and the emergence of a pure dynamical transition in some of these systems. We show how the results obtained for a random Hamiltonian may be also applied to a given Hamiltonian. These two results open the way to a better understanding of the glassy transition in real systems.
