Microscopic chaos and macroscopic entropy in fluids

In nonequilibrium thermodynamics macroscopic entropy creation plays an important role. Here we study, from various viewpoints, its relation with the phase space contraction, which has been recently proposed as an apparently alternative quantity. quantity.

Entropy, Thermostats and Chaotic Hypothesis

The chaotic hypothesis is proposed as a basis for a general theory of nonequilibrium stationary states. Version 2: new comments added after presenting this talk at the Meeting mentioned in the Acknowledgement. One typo corrected.

Fractional Lindstedt series

The parametric equations of the surfaces on which highly resonant quasi-periodic motions develop (lower-dimensional tori) cannot be analytically continued, in general, in the perturbation parameter, i.e. they are not analytic functions of the perturbation parameter. However rather generally quasi-periodic motions whose frequencies satisfy only one rational relation ("resonances of order 1") admit formal perturbation expansions in terms of a fractional power of the perturbation parameter, depending on the degeneration of the resonance. We find conditions for this to happen, and in such a case we prove that the formal expansion is convergent after suitable resummation.

CKN theory of singularities of weak solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations

The lectures are devoted to a complete exposition of the theory of singularities of the Navier Stokes equations solution studied by Leray, in a simple geometrical setting in which the fluid is enclosed in a container $Ø$ with periodic boundary conditions and side size $L$. The theory is due to the work of Scheffer, Caffarelli, Kohn, Nirenberg and is called here CKN-theory as it is inspired by the work of the last three authors which considerably improved the earlier estimates of Scheffer.

Fluctuation theorem revisited

Recently the ``Fluctuation theorem'' has been criticized and incorrect incorrect contents have been atributed to it. Here I reestablish and comment the original statements.

Entropy production in nonequilibrium thermodynamics: a review

Entropy might be a not well defined concept if the system can undergo transformations involving stationary nonequilibria. It might be analogous to the heat content (once called ``caloric'') in transformations that are not isochoric (i.e. which involve mechanical work): it could be just a quantity that can be transferred or created, like heat in equilibrium. The text first reviews the philosophy behind a recently proposed definition of entropy production in nonequilibrium stationary systems. A detailed technical attempt at defining the entropy of a stationary states via their variational properties follows: the unsatisfactory aspects of the results add arguments in favor of the nonexistence of a function of state to be identified with entropy; at the same time new aspects and properties of the phase space contraction emerge.

Lyapunov spectra and nonequilibrium ensembles equivalence in 2D fluid mechanics

We perform numerical experiments to study the Lyapunov spectra of dynamical systems associated with the Navier--Stokes (NS) equation in two spatial dimensions truncated over the Fourier basis. Recently new equations, called GNS equations, have been introduced and conjectured to be equivalent to the NS equations at large Reynolds numbers. The Lyapunov spectra of the NS and of the corresponding GNS systems overlap, adding evidence in favor of the conjectured equivalence already studied and partially extended in previous papers. We make use of the Lyapunov spectra to study a fluctuation relation which had been proposed to extend the ``fluctuation theorem'' to strongly dissipative systems. Preliminary results towards the formulation of a local version of the fluctuation formula are also presented.

The Luttinger model: its role in the RG-theory of one dimensional many body Fermi systems

The Luttinger model was introduced to illustrate the theory of Tomonaga via an exactly soluble model. It became soon the subject of great interest also on the part of Mathematical Physics and a key to the investigations of the mathematical properties of Condensed Matter Physics. This paper reviews aspects of the above developments relevant for renormalization group methods.

Renormalization group in Statistical Mechanics and Mechanics: gauge symmetries and vanishing beta functions

Two very different problems that can be studied by renormalization group methods are discussed with the aim of showing the conceptual unity that renormalization group has introduced in some areas of theoretical Physics. The two problems are: the ground state theory of a one dimensional quantum Fermi liquid and the existence of quasi periodic motions in classical mechanical systems close to integrable ones. I summarize here the main ideas and show that the two treatments, although completely independent of each other, are strikingly similar.
