Ergodic and chaotic hypotheses: nonequilibrium ensembles in statistical mechanics and turbulence

The ergodic hypothesis outgrew from the ancient conception of motion as periodic or quasi periodic. It did cause a revision of our views of motion, particularly through Boltzmann and Poincaré: we discuss how Boltmann's conception of motion is still very modern and how it can provide ideas and methods to study the problem of nonequilibrium in mechanics and in fluids. This leads to the chaotic hypothesis, a recent interpretation of a very ambitious principle conceived by D. Ruelle: it is a possible extension of the ergodic hypothesis and it implies general parameterless relations. Together with further ideas, it appears to be consistent with some recent experiments as we discuss here.

Chaotic Hypothesis and Universal Large Deviations Properties

Chaotic systems arise naturally in Statistical Mechanics and in Fluid Dynamics. A paradigm for their modelization are smooth hyperbolic systems. Are there consequences that can be drawn simply by assuming that a system is hyperbolic? here we present a few model independent general consequences which may have some relevance for the Physics of chaotic systems. Expanded version of a talk at ICM98, Berlin.

A local fluctuation theorem

A mechanism for the validity of a local version of the fluctuation theorem, uniform in the system size, is discussed for a reversible chain of weakly coupled Anosov systems.

Reminiscences on science at I.H.E.S. A problem on homoclinic theory and a brief review

On the occasion of the 40-th anniversary of IHES I present a few scientific reminiscences: most of my scientific life has been marked by my visits and I run through them concluding with the analysis of a problem that originated during my last visit. The problem is to develop a convergent perturbative algorithm for the construction of the ``Eliasson's potential'' for the stable and unstable manifolds of an invariant torus: and to study its properties. A brief review follows.

Hamilton-Jacobi equation, heteroclinic chains and Arnol'd diffusion in three time scales systems

Interacting systems consisting of two rotators and a point mass near a hyperbolic fixed point are considered, in a case in which the uncoupled systems have three very different characteristic time scales. The abundance of quasi periodic motions in phase space is studied via the Hamilton-Jacobi equation. The main result, a high density theorem of invariant tori, is derived by the classical canonical transformation method extending previous results. As an application the existence of long heteroclinic chains (and of Arnol'd diffusion) is proved for systems interacting through a trigonometric polynomial in the angle variables.

Quasi linear flows on tori: regularity of their linearization

Under suitable conditions a flow on a torus $C^{(p)}$--close, with $p$ large enough, to a quasi periodic diophantine rotation is shown to be conjugated to the quasi periodic rotation by a map that is analytic in the perturbation size. This result is parallel to Moser's theorem stating conjugability in class $C^{(p')}$ for some $p'<p$. The extra conditions restrict the class of perturbations that are allowed.

Equivalence of dynamical ensembles and Navier Stokes equations

A reversible version of the Navier Stokes equation is studied. A conjecture emerges stating the equivalence between the reversible equation and the usual Navier Stokes equation. The latter appears as a statement of ensembles equivalence in the limit of infinite Reynolds number, which plays the role of the thermodynamic limit.

Chaotic principle: some applications to developed turbulence

Some models for developed turbulence are considered; they are shown to obey a large fluctuations theorem, and one among them also obeys a response reciprocity relation of Onsager's type. This illustrates and extends ideas and techniques developed in earlier works mainly for non equilibrium problems in statistical mechanics.
