Superintegrability and geometry: a review of the extended Hamiltonian approach

We review the results of several of our papers about the procedure of extension of Hamiltonians, allowing the construction of families of superintegrable systems with non-trivial polynomial first integrals (or symmetry operators) of arbitrarily high degree. In particular, we focus on the geometric structures involved by the procedure: warped manifolds and Riemannian coverings. Examples of superintegrable systems, classical and quantum, with the structure of extended Hamiltonians are anisotropic harmonic oscillators, Kepler-Coulomb, Tremblay-Turbiner-Winternitz and Post-Winternitz systems.

On the degeneracy of the energy levels of Schroedinger and Klein-Gordon equations on Riemannian coverings

We study the degeneracy of the energy levels of the Schroedinger equation with Kepler-Coulomb potential and of the Klein-Gordon equation on Riemannian coverings of the Euclidean space and of the Schwarzschild space-time respectively. Degeneracy of energy levels is a consequence of the superintegrability of the system. We see how the degree of degeneracy changes depending on the covering parameter k, the parameter that in space-times can be related with a cosmic string, and show examples of lower degeneracy in correspondence of non integer values of k.

Relative Equilibria for Scaling Symmetries and Central Configurations

In this paper, we explore scaling symmetries within the framework of symplectic geometry. We focus on the action $\Phi$ of the multiplicative group $G = \mathbb{R}^+$ on exact symplectic manifolds $(M, \omega,\theta)$, with $\omega = -d\theta$, where $ \theta $ is a given primitive one-form. Extending established results in symplectic geometry and Hamiltonian dynamics, we introduce conformally symplectic maps, conformally Hamiltonian systems, conformally symplectic group actions, and the notion of conformal invariance. This framework allows us to generalize the momentum map to the conformal momentum map, which is crucial for understanding scaling symmetries. Additionally, we provide a generalized Hamiltonian Noether's theorem for these symmetries. We introduce the (conformal) augmented Hamiltonian $H_{\xi}$ and prove that the relative equilibria of scaling symmetries are solutions to equations involving $ H _{ \xi } $ and the primitive one-form $\theta$. We derive their main properties, emphasizing the differences from relative equilibria in traditional symplectic actions. For cotangent bundles, we define a scaled cotangent lifted action and derive explicit formulas for the conformal momentum map. We also provide a general definition of central configurations for Hamiltonian systems on cotangent bundles that admit scaling symmetries. Applying these results to simple mechanical systems, we introduce the augmented potential $U_{\xi}$ and show that the relative equilibria of scaling symmetries are solutions to an equation involving $ U _{ \xi } $ and the Lagrangian one-form $\theta_L$. Finally, we apply our general theory to the Newtonian $n$-body problem, recovering the classical equations for central configurations.

Separation of Variables and Superintegrability on Riemannian Coverings

We introduce Stäckel separable coordinates on the covering manifolds $M_k$, where $k$ is a rational parameter, of certain constant-curvature Riemannian manifolds with the structure of warped manifold. These covering manifolds appear implicitly in literature as connected with superintegrable systems with polynomial in the momenta first integrals of arbitrarily high degree, such as the Tremblay-Turbiner-Winternitz system. We study here for the first time multiseparability and superintegrability of natural Hamiltonian systems on these manifolds and see how these properties depend on the parameter $k$.

On the Extended-Hamiltonian Structure of Certain Superintegrable Systems on Constant-Curvature Riemannian and Pseudo-Riemannian Surfaces

We prove the integrability and superintegrability of a family of natural Hamiltonians which includes and generalises those studied in some literature, originally defined on the 2D Minkowski space. Some of the new Hamiltonians are a perfect analogy of the well-known superintegrable system on the Euclidean plane proposed by Tremblay-Turbiner-Winternitz and they are defined on Minkowski space, as well as on all other 2D manifolds of constant curvature, Riemannian or pseudo-Riemannian. We show also how the application of the coupling-constant-metamorphosis technique allows us to obtain new superintegrable Hamiltonians from the previous ones. Moreover, for the Minkowski case, we show the quantum superintegrability of the corresponding quantum Hamiltonian operator. Our results are obtained by applying the theory of extended Hamiltonian systems, which is strictly connected with the geometry of warped manifolds.

Extensions of non-natural Hamiltonians

The concept of extended Hamiltonian systems allows the geometrical interpretation of several integrable and superintegrable systems with polynomial first integrals of degree depending on a rational parameter. Until now, the procedure of extension has been applied only in the case of natural Hamiltonians. In this article, we give several examples of application to non-natural Hamiltonians, such as the two point-vortices, the Lotka-Volterra and some quartic in the momenta Hamiltonians, obtaining effectively extended Hamiltonians in some cases and failing in others. We briefly discuss the reasons of these results.

Block-Separation of Variables: a Form of Partial Separation for Natural Hamiltonians

We study twisted products $H=α^rH_r$ of natural autonomous Hamiltonians $H_r$, each one depending on a separate set, called here separate $r$-block, of variables. We show that, when the twist functions $α^r$ are a row of the inverse of a block-Stäckel matrix, the dynamics of $H$ reduces to the dynamics of the $H_r$, modified by a scalar potential depending only on variables of the corresponding $r$-block. It is a kind of partial separation of variables. We characterize this block-separation in an invariant way by writing in block-form classical results of Stäckel separation of variables. We classify the block-separable coordinates of $\mathbb E^3$.

Extended Hamiltonians and shift, ladder functions and operators

In recent years, many natural Hamiltonian systems, classical and quantum, with constants of motion of high degree, or symmetry operators of high order, have been found and studied. Most of these Hamiltonians, in the classical case, can be included in the family of extended Hamiltonians, geometrically characterized by the structure of warped manifold of their configuration manifold. For the extended manifolds, the characteristic constants of motion of high degree are polynomial in the momenta of determined form. We consider here a different form of the constants of motion, based on the factorization procedure developed by S. Kuru, J. Negro and others. We show that an important subclass of the extended Hamiltonians admits factorized constants of motion and we determine their expression. The classical constants may be non-polynomial in the momenta, but the factorization procedure allows, in a type of extended Hamiltonians, their quantization via shift and ladder operators, for systems of any finite dimension.

Modified Laplace-Beltrami quantization of natural Hamiltonian systems with quadratic constants of motion

It is natural to investigate if the quantization of an integrable or superintegrable classical Hamiltonian systems is still integrable or superintegrable. We study here this problem in the case of natural Hamiltonians with constants of motion quadratic in the momenta. The procedure of quantization here considered, transforms the Hamiltonian into the Laplace-Beltrami operator plus a scalar potential. In order to transform the constants of motion into symmetry operators of the quantum Hamiltonian, additional scalar potentials, known as quantum corrections, must be introduced, depending on the Riemannian structure of the manifold. We give here a complete geometric characterization of the quantum corrections necessary for the case considered. Stäckel systems are studied in particular details. Examples in conformally and non-conformally flat manifolds are given.

Born-Jordan and Weyl Quantizations of the 2D Anisotropic Harmonic Oscillator

We apply the Born-Jordan and Weyl quantization formulas for polynomials in canonical coordinates to the constants of motion of some examples of the superintegrable 2D anisotropic harmonic oscillator. Our aim is to study the behaviour of the algebra of the constants of motion after the different quantization procedures. In the examples considered, we have that the Weyl formula always preserves the original superintegrable structure of the system, while the Born-Jordan formula, when producing different operators than the Weyl's one, does not.

Extended Hamiltonians, Coupling-Constant Metamorphosis and the Post-Winternitz System

The coupling-constant metamorphosis is applied to modified extended Hamiltonians and sufficient conditions are found in order that the transformed high-degree first integral of the transformed Hamiltonian is determined by the same algorithm which computes the corresponding first integral of the original extended Hamiltonian. As examples, we consider the Post-Winternitz system and the 2D caged anisotropic oscillator.

Canonoid and Poissonoid Transformations, Symmetries and BiHamiltonian Structures

We give a characterization of linear canonoid transformations on symplectic manifolds and we use it to generate biHamiltonian structures for some mechanical systems. Utilizing this characterization we also study the behavior of the harmonic oscillator under canonoid transformations. We present a description of canonoid transformations due to E.T. Whittaker, and we show that it leads, in a natural way, to the modern, coordinate-independent definition of canonoid transformations. We also generalize canonoid transformations to Poisson manifolds by introducing Poissonoid transformations. We give examples of such transformations for Euler's equations of the rigid body (on $\mathcal{so}^\ast (3) $ and $ so^\ast (4)$) and for an integrable case of Kirchhoff's equations for the motion of a rigid body immersed in an ideal fluid. We study the relationship between biHamiltonian structures and Poissonoid transformations for these examples. We analyze the link between Poissonoid transformations, constants of motion, and symmetries.

Symmetry operators and separation of variables for Dirac's equation on two-dimensional spin manifolds with external fields

The second order symmetry operators that commute with the Dirac operator with external vector, scalar and pseudo-scalar potentials are computed on a general two-dimensional spin-manifold. It is shown that the operator is defined in terms of Killing vectors, valence two Killing tensors and scalar fields defined on the background manifold. The commuting operator that arises from a non-trivial Killing tensor is determined with respect to the associated system of Liouville coordinates and compared to the the second order operator that arises from that obtained from the unique separation scheme associated with such operators. It shown by the study of several examples that the operators arising from these two approaches coincide.

The Tremblay-Turbiner-Winternitz system as extended Hamiltonian

We generalize the idea of "extension of Hamiltonian systems" -- developed in a series of previous articles -- which allows the explicit construction of Hamiltonian systems with additional non-trivial polynomial first integrals of arbitrarily high degree, as well as the determination of new superintegrable systems from old ones. The present generalization, that we call "modified extension of Hamiltonian systems", produces the third independent first integral for the (complete) Tremblay-Turbiner-Winternitz (TTW) system, as well as for the caged anisotropic oscillator in dimension two.

Extensions of natural Hamiltonians

Given an n-dimensional natural Hamiltonian L on a Riemannian or pseudo-Riemannian manifold, we call "extension" of L the n+1 dimensional Hamiltonian $H=\frac 12 p_u^2+α(u)L+β(u)$ with new canonically conjugated coordinates $(u,p_u)$. For suitable L, the functions $α$ and $β$ can be chosen depending on any natural number m such that H admits an extra polynomial first integral in the momenta of degree m, explicitly determined in the form of the m-th power of a differential operator applied to a certain function of coordinates and momenta. In particular, if L is maximally superintegrable (MS) then H is MS also. Therefore, the extension procedure allows the creation of new superintegrable systems from old ones. For m=2, the extra first integral generated by the extension procedure determines a second-order symmetry operator of a Laplace-Beltrami quantization of H, modified by taking in account the curvature of the configuration manifold. The extension procedure can be applied to several Hamiltonian systems, including the three-body Calogero and Wolfes systems (without harmonic term), the Tremblay-Turbiner-Winternitz system and n-dimensional anisotropic harmonic oscillators. We propose here a short review of the known results of the theory and some previews of new ones.

Extensions of Hamiltonian systems dependent on a rational parameter

The technique of "extension" allows to build $(n+1)$-dimensional Hamiltonian systems with a non-trivial polynomial in the momenta first integral of any given degree starting from a $n$-dimensional Hamiltonian satisfying some additional properties. Until now, the application of the method was restricted to integer values of a certain fundamental parameter determining the degree of the additional first integral. In this article we show how this technique can be generalized to any rational value of the same parameter. Several examples are given, among them the anisotropic oscillator and a special case of the Tremblay-Turbiner-Winternitz system.

Superintegrable Extensions of Superintegrable Systems

A procedure to extend a superintegrable system into a new superintegrable one is systematically tested for the known systems on $\mathbb E^2$ and $\mathbb S^2$ and for a family of systems defined on constant curvature manifolds. The procedure results effective in many cases including Tremblay-Turbiner-Winternitz and three-particle Calogero systems.

Generalizations of a method for constructing first integrals of a class of natural Hamiltonians and some remarks about quantization

In previous papers we determined necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a class of natural Hamiltonians with non-trivial first integrals of arbitrarily high degree in the momenta. Such Hamiltonians were characterized as (n+1)-dimensional extensions of n-dimensional Hamiltonians on constant-curvature (pseudo-)Riemannian manifolds Q. In this paper, we generalize that approach in various directions, we obtain an explicit expression for the first integrals, holding on the more general case of Hamiltonians on Poisson manifolds, and show how the construction of above is made possible by the existence on Q of particular conformal Killing tensors or, equivalently, particular conformal master symmetries of the geodesic equations. Finally, we consider the problem of Laplace-Beltrami quantization of these first integrals when they are of second-degree.
