First Integrals of Extended Hamiltonians in n+1 Dimensions Generated by Powers of an Operator

We describe a procedure to construct polynomial in the momenta first integrals of arbitrarily high degree for natural Hamiltonians $H$ obtained as one-dimensional extensions of natural (geodesic) $n$-dimensional Hamiltonians $L$. The Liouville integrability of $L$ implies the (minimal) superintegrability of $H$. We prove that, as a consequence of natural integrability conditions, it is necessary for the construction that the curvature of the metric tensor associated with $L$ is constant. As examples, the procedure is applied to one-dimensional $L$, including and improving earlier results, and to two and three-dimensional $L$, providing new superintegrable systems.

Symmetry Operators and Separation of Variables for Dirac's Equation on Two-Dimensional Spin Manifolds

A signature independent formalism is created and utilized to determine the general second-order symmetry operators for Dirac's equation on two-dimensional Lorentzian spin manifolds. The formalism is used to characterize the orthonormal frames and metrics that permit the solution of Dirac's equation by separation of variables in the case where a second-order symmetry operator underlies the separation. Separation of variables in complex variables on two-dimensional Minkowski space is also considered.

Searching for integrable Hamiltonian systems with Platonic symmetries

In this paper we try to find examples of integrable natural Hamiltonian systems on the sphere $S^2$ with the symmetries of each Platonic polyhedra. Although some of these systems are known, their expression is extremely complicated; we try here to find the simplest possible expressions for this kind of dynamical systems. Even in the simplest cases it is not easy to prove their integrability by direct computation of the first integrals, therefore, we make use of numerical methods to provide evidences of integrability; namely, by analyzing their Poincaré sections (surface sections). In this way we find three systems with platonic symmetries, one for each class of equivalent Platonic polyhedra: tetrahedral, exahedral-octahedral, dodecahedral-icosahedral, showing evidences of integrability. The proof of integrability and the construction of the first integrals are left for further works. As an outline of the possible developments if the integrability of these systems will be proved, we show how to build from them new integrable systems in dimension three and, from these, superintegrable systems in dimension four corresponding to superintegrable interactions among four points on a line, in analogy with the systems with dihedral symmetry treated in a previous article. A common feature of these possibly integrable systems is, besides to the rich symmetry group on the configuration manifold, the partition of the latter into dynamically separated regions showing a simple structure of the potential in their interior. This observation allows to conjecture integrability for a class of Hamiltonian systems in the Euclidean spaces.

Superintegrable three body systems in one dimension and generalizations

Superintegrable Hamiltonian systems describing the interactions among three point masses on a line have been described in [2]. Here, we show examples of how the approach of above can be extended to a higher number of particles on a line and on higher dimensional manifolds. This paper is a slightly extended version of a poster presented at the XVI ICMP held in Prague, 3-8 August 2009.

Geometrical Theory of Separation of Variables, a review of recent developments

The Separation of Variables theory for the Hamilton-Jacobi equation is 'by definition' related to the use of special kinds of coordinates, for example Jacobi coordinates on the ellipsoid or Stäckel systems in the Euclidean space. However, it is possible and useful to develop this theory in a coordinate-independent way: this is the Geometrical Theory of Separation of Variables. It involves geometrical objects (like special submanifolds and foliations) as well as special vector and tensor fields like Killing vectors and Killing two-tensors (i.e. isometries of order one and two), and their conformal extensions; quadratic first integrals are associated with the Killing two-tensors. In the recent years Separable Systems provide mathematical structures studied from different points of view. We present here a short review of some of these structures and of their applications with particular consideration to the underlying geometry. Algebraic relations among Killing tensors, quadratic first integrals or their associated second order differential operators and some aspects of approximation with separable systems are considered. This paper has been presented as a poster at Dynamics Days Europe 2008, Delft 25-29 August 2008.

Symmetry operators for Dirac's equation on two-dimensional spin manifolds

It is shown that the second order symmetry operators for the Dirac equation on a general two-dimensional spin manifold may be expressed in terms of Killing vectors and valence two Killing tensors. The role of these operators in the theory of separation of variables for the Dirac equation is studied.

Superintegrable 3-body systems on the line

We consider classical three-body interactions on a Euclidean line depending on the reciprocal distance of the particles and admitting four functionally independent quadratic in the momenta first integrals. These systems are superseparable (i.e. multiseparable), superintegrable and equivalent (up to rescalings) to a one-particle system in the three-dimensional Euclidean space. Common features of the dynamics are discussed. We show how to determine the quantum symmetry operators associated with the first integrals considered here but do not analyze the corresponding quantum dynamics. The conformal superseparability is proved and examples of conformal first integrals are given. The systems considered here in generality include the Calogero, Wolfes, and other three-body interactions widely studied in mathematical physics.

Eigenvalues of Killing Tensors and Separable Webs on Riemannian and Pseudo-Riemannian Manifolds

Given a $n$-dimensional Riemannian manifold of arbitrary signature, we illustrate an algebraic method for constructing the coordinate webs separating the geodesic Hamilton-Jacobi equation by means of the eigenvalues of $m \leq n$ Killing two-tensors. Moreover, from the analysis of the eigenvalues, information about the possible symmetries of the web foliations arises. Three cases are examined: the orthogonal separation, the general separation, including non-orthogonal and isotropic coordinates, and the conformal separation, where Killing tensors are replaced by conformal Killing tensors. The method is illustrated by several examples and an application to the L-systems is provided.

Complex variables for separation of Hamilton-Jacobi equation on real pseudo-Riemannian manifolds

In this paper the geometric theory of separation of variables for time-independent Hamilton-Jacobi equation is extended to include the case of complex eigenvalues of a Killing tensor on pseudo-Riemannian manifolds. This task is performed without to complexify the manifold but just considering complex-valued functions on it. The simple formalism introduced allows to extend in a very natural way the classical results on separation of variables (including Levi-Civita criterion and Stackel-Eisenhart theory) to the complex case. Orthogonal variables only are considered.
