Quadrature Over-the-Air-Computing for Multimodal Dual-Stream Signal Processing

We propose a novel quadrature over-the-air computing (Q-OTAC) framework that enables the simultaneously computation of two independent functions and/or data stream within a single transmission. In contrast to conventional OTAC schemes, where a single function is computed by treating each complex signal as a single component, the proposed Q-OTAC exploits both in-phase and quadrature (IQ) components of a complex signal, encoding two distinct functions and/or data streams at the edge devices (EDs) and employing a novel low-complexity IQ-decoupled combiner at the access point (AP) to independently recover each stream, which effectively doubles the computation rate. A key strength of this framework lies in its simplicity and broad compatibility: the extension into the quadrature domain is conceptually straightforward, yet remakably powerful, allowing seamless integration into existing OTAC techniques. Simulation results validate the effectiveness of this approach, including the first demonstration of dual-function aggregation (e.g., parallel summation and product), highlighting the potential of Q-OTAC for enabling multi-modal and high-efficiency beyond fifth generation (B5G) applications.

RIS-Enabled Spoofing Against Adversary Sensing: CRB-Maximizing Design and Decoying Analysis

This paper studies the capability of a Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS), when transparently covering a User Equipment (UE), to deceive an adversary monostatic radar system. A compact RIS kernel model that explicitly links the radar's angular response to the RIS phase profile is introduced, enabling an analytical investigation of the Angle of Arrival (AoA) estimation accuracy with respect to the kernel's power. This model is also leveraged to formulate an RIS-based spoofing design with the dual objective to enforce strict nulls around the UE's true reflection AoA and maximize the channel gain towards a decoy direction. The RIS's deception capability is quantified using point-wise and angle-range robust criteria, and a configuration-independent placement score guiding decoy selection is proposed. Selected numerical results confirm deep nulls at the true reflection AoA together with a pronounced decoy peak, rendering maximum-likelihood sensing at the adversary radar unreliable.

From Antenna Abundance to Antenna Intelligence in 6G Gigantic MIMO Systems

Current cellular systems achieve high spectral efficiency through Massive MIMO, which leverages an abundance of antennas to create favorable propagation conditions for multiuser spatial multiplexing. Looking towards future networks, the extrapolation of this paradigm leads to systems with many hundreds of antennas per base station, raising concerns regarding hardware complexity, cost, and power consumption. This article suggests more intelligent array designs that reduce the need for excessive antenna numbers. We revisit classical uniform array design principles and explain how their uniform spatial sampling leads to unnecessary redundancies in practical deployment scenarios. By exploiting non-uniform sparse arrays with site-specific antenna placements -- based on either pre-optimized irregular arrays or real-time movable antennas -- we demonstrate how superior multiuser MIMO performance can be achieved with far fewer antennas. These principles are inspired by previous works on wireless localization. We explain and demonstrate numerically how these concepts can be adapted for communications to improve the average sum rate and similar metrics. The results suggest a paradigm shift for future antenna array design, where antenna intelligence replaces sheer antenna count. This opens new opportunities for efficient, adaptable, and sustainable Gigantic MIMO systems.

Robust Egoistic Rigid Body Localization

We consider a robust and self-reliant (or "egoistic") variation of the rigid body localization (RBL) problem, in which a primary rigid body seeks to estimate the pose (i.e., location and orientation) of another rigid body (or "target"), relative to its own, without the assistance of external infrastructure, without prior knowledge of the shape of the target, and taking into account the possibility that the available observations are incomplete. Three complementary contributions are then offered for such a scenario. The first is a method to estimate the translation vector between the center point of both rigid bodies, which unlike existing techniques does not require that both objects have the same shape or even the same number of landmark points. This technique is shown to significantly outperform the state-of-the-art (SotA) under complete information, but to be sensitive to data erasures, even when enhanced by matrix completion methods. The second contribution, designed to offer improved performance in the presence of incomplete information, offers a robust alternative to the latter, at the expense of a slight relative loss under complete information. Finally, the third contribution is a scheme for the estimation of the rotation matrix describing the relative orientation of the target rigid body with respect to the primary. Comparisons of the proposed schemes and SotA techniques demonstrate the advantage of the contributed methods in terms of root mean square error (RMSE) performance under fully complete information and incomplete conditions.

Affine Frequency Division Multiplexing (AFDM) for 6G: Properties, Features, and Challenges

Affine frequency division multiplexing (AFDM) is an emerging waveform candidate for future sixth generation (6G) systems offering a range of promising features, such as enhanced robustness in heterogeneous and high-mobility environments, as well as inherent suitability for integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) applications. In addition, unlike other candidates such as orthogonal time-frequency space (OTFS) modulation, AFDM provides several unique advantages that strengthen its relevance to practical deployment and standardization in 6G. Notably, as a natural generalization of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), strong backward compatibility with existing conventional systems is guaranteed, while also offering novel possibilities in waveform design, for example to enable physical-layer security through its inherent chirp parametrization. In all, this article provides an overview of AFDM, emphasizing its suitability as a candidate waveform for 6G standardization. First, we provide a concise introduction to the fundamental properties and unique characteristics of AFDM, followed by highlights of its advantageous features, and finally a discussion of its potential and challenges in 6G standardization efforts and representative requirements.

Blinding the Wiretapper: RIS-Enabled User Occultation in the ISAC Era

An undesirable consequence of the foreseeable proliferation of sophisticated integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) technologies is the enabling of spoofing, by malicious agents, of situational information (such as proximity, direction or location) of legitimate users of wireless systems. In order to mitigate this threat, we present a novel ISAC scheme that, aided by a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS), enables the occultation of the positions of user equipment (UE) from wiretappers, while maintaining both sensing and desired communication performance between the UEs and a legitimate base station (BS). To that end, we first formulate an RIS phase-shift optimization problem that jointly maximizes the sum-rate performance of the UEs (communication objective), while minimizing the projection of the wiretapper's effective channel onto the legitimate channel (hiding objective), thereby disrupting the attempts by a wiretapper of localizing the UEs. Then, in order to efficiently solve the resulting non-convex joint optimization problem, a novel manifold optimization algorithm is derived, whose effectiveness is validated by numerical results, which demonstrate that the proposed approach preserves legitimate ISAC performance while significantly degrading the wiretapper's sensing capability.

Quantum-Accelerated Wireless Communications: Concepts, Connections, and Implications

Quantum computing is poised to redefine the algorithmic foundations of communication systems. While quantum superposition and entanglement enable quadratic or exponential speedups for specific problems, identifying use cases where these advantages yield engineering benefits is still nontrivial. This article presents the fundamentals of quantum computing in a style familiar to the communications society, outlining the current limits of fault-tolerant quantum computing and clarifying a mathematical harmony between quantum and wireless systems, which makes the topic more enticing to wireless researchers. Based on a systematic review of pioneering and state-of-the-art studies indicating speedup opportunities, we distill common design trends for the research and development of quantum-accelerated communication systems and highlight lessons learned. The key insight is that quantum algorithms, including their gate-level realizations, can benefit from the design intuition applied in communication engineering. This article aims to catalyze interdisciplinary research at the frontier of quantum information processing and future communication systems.

SIR Analysis for Affine Filter Bank Modulation

The signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) of the Affine Filter Bank Modulation (AFBM) waveform is analyzed under minimum mean square error (MMSE) equalization in two domains; namely, the affine domain and the filtered time-domain (TD). Due to the incorporation of the discrete affine Fourier transform (DAFT) and despreading/mapping, an interesting and counter-intuitive cancellation of the unwanted combination of the channel induced interference with the orthogonality approximation error is seen in the filtered TD, a process which does not occur in the affine domain. The direct impact on bit error rate (BER) provides a thorough validation of the proposed analysis and explains the substantial gains in performance of the filtered TD detection scheme as opposed to its affine domain equivalent

6D Rigid Body Localization and Velocity Estimation via Gaussian Belief Propagation

We propose a novel message-passing solution to the sixth-dimensional (6D) moving rigid body localization (RBL) problem, in which the three-dimensional (3D) translation vector and rotation angles, as well as their corresponding translational and angular velocities, are all estimated by only utilizing the relative range and Doppler measurements between the "anchor" sensors located at an 3D (rigid body) observer and the "target" sensors of another rigid body. The proposed method is based on a bilinear Gaussian belief propagation (GaBP) framework, employed to estimate the absolute sensor positions and velocities using a range- and Doppler-based received signal model, which is then utilized in the reconstruction of the RBL transformation model, linearized under a small-angle approximation. The method further incorporates a second bivariate GaBP designed to directly estimate the 3D rotation angles and translation vectors, including an interference cancellation (IC) refinement stage to improve the angle estimation performance, followed by the estimation of the angular and the translational velocities. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified via simulations, which confirms its improved performance compared to equivalent state-of-the-art (SotA) techniques.

Flexible Continuous Aperture Arrays

A novel electromagnetic (EM) structure termed flexible continuous aperture array (FCAPA) is proposed, which incorporates inherent surface flexibility into typical continuous aperture array (CAPA) systems, thereby enhancing the degrees-of-freedom (DoF) of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems equipped with this technology. By formulating and solving a downlink multi-user beamforming optimization problem to maximize the weighted sum rate (WSR) of the multiple users with FCAPA, it is shown that the proposed structure outperforms typical CAPA systems by a wide margin, with performance increasing with increasing morphability.

On the Robustness of AFDM and OTFS Against Passive Eavesdroppers

We investigate the robustness of affine frequency division multiplexing (AFDM) and orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) waveforms against passive eavesdroppers performing brute-force demodulation to intercepted signals, under the assumption that eavesdroppers have no knowledge of chirp parameters (in AFDM) or the delay-Doppler grid configuration (in OTFS), such that they must search exhaustively over possible demodulation matrices. Analytical results show that the brute-force complexity scales as $\mathcal{O}(\sqrt{N})$ for OTFS and $\mathcal{O}(N^2)$ for AFDM, where $N$ is the number of subcarriers, indicating that AFDM has superior resilience over OTFS. Bit error rate (BER) simulations confirm the analysis by showing that, with AFDM, the signal remains nearly undecodable at the eavesdropper, while OTFS allows partial signal recovery under equivalent conditions.

Normalized Ambiguity Function Characteristics of OFDM, OTFS, AFDM, and CP-AFDM for ISAC

This paper presents a unified and system-agnostic analysis of the ambiguity function (AF) characteristics of four representative multicarrier waveforms, orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS), affine frequency division multiplexing (AFDM), and chirp-permuted AFDM (CP-AFDM), which are considered as key candidates for enabling integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) in future sixth generation (6G) networks. The AF of each waveform is obtained directly from its discrete-time definition and enhanced via ideal fractional interpolation, enabling precise characterization of its continuous-time delay-Doppler response. Two signaling modes are examined: a communication-oriented case with random information symbols suitable only for monostatic scenarios, and a sensing-oriented case with fixed unimodular symbols suitable for general multi-static scenarios. Furthermore, the AFs and the ambiguity metrics including the 3dB mainlobe width, peak-to-sidelobe ratio (PSLR), and integrated sidelobe ratio (ISLR), are evaluated in normalized delay-Doppler units, enabling direct translation to any physical system configuration defined by bandwidth, sampling frequency, or symbol duration, while ensuring straightforward and consistent comparison across waveforms. The results establish a consistent benchmark for comparing waveform sensing capabilities in ISAC design, consolidating known behaviors: OFDM exhibits excellent delay resolution and sidelobe behavior but poor Doppler response, whereas advanced waveforms achieve improved balance between delay and Doppler resolution with varying sidelobe characteristics. The simulation code of the smooth AFs, is openly shared to promote reproducibility and support future ISAC waveform research.

Grover Adaptive Search for the Higher-Order Formulation of Quadratic Assignment Problems

We demonstrate that the search space of the quadratic assignment problem (QAP), known as an NP-hard combinatorial optimization problem, can be reduced using Grover adaptive search (GAS) with permutation preparation operator (PPO). To that end, we first revise the traditional quadratic unconstrained binary optimization (QUBO) formulation of the QAP into a higher-order unconstrained binary optimization (HUBO) formulation, introducing a binary encoding method. Algebraic analyses in terms of the number of qubits, quantum gates, circuit depth, and query complexity are performed, which indicate that our proposed approach significantly reduces the search space size, improving convergence performance to the optimal solution compared to the conventional one. Furthermore, although the PPO for HUBO has a greater circuit depth than the PPO for QUBO, when the analysis is extended to the entire state preparation operator, both HUBO and QUBO exhibit comparable depths. Therefore, owing to its smaller number of variables, HUBO can be concluded to be more effective.

The IEEE Signal Processing Society's Leading Role in Developing Standards for Computational Imaging and Sensing: Part II

In every imaging or sensing application, the physical hardware creates constraints that must be overcome or they limit system performance. Techniques that leverage additional degrees of freedom can effectively extend performance beyond the inherent physical capabilities of the hardware. An example includes synchronizing distributed sensors so as to synthesize a larger aperture for remote sensing applications. An additional example is integrating the communication and sensing functions in a wireless system through the clever design of waveforms and optimized resource management. As these technologies mature beyond the conceptual and prototype phase they will ultimately transition to the commercial market. Here, standards play a critical role in ensuring success. Standards ensure interoperability between systems manufactured by different vendors and define industry best practices for vendors and customers alike. The Signal Processing Society of the Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) plays a leading role in developing high-quality standards for computational sensing technologies through the working groups of the Synthetic Aperture Standards Committee (SASC). In this column we highlight the standards activities of the P3383 Performance Metrics for Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC) Systems Working Group and the P3343 Spatio-Temporal Synchronization of a Synthetic Aperture of Distributed Sensors Working Group.

On the Noise Robustness of Affine Frequency Division Multiplexing: Analysis and Applications

This paper investigates the robustness of affine frequency division multiplexing (AFDM) and orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation schemes against non-white Gaussian noise, which can model various sources of additive disturbances to the received signal. The proposed approach demonstrates that the performance of these waveforms depends on the ability of the demodulation matrix to whiten the noise-a property that is, in turn, related to the sparsity of the matrix. AFDM is shown to outperform OTFS and orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), as its demodulation matrix is generally less sparse than those of the other waveforms. Based on this analysis, several application examples and use cases are presented, such as the use of AFDM and OTFS in narrowband signals or in coexistence with OFDM signals. Finally, simulation results confirm that AFDM achieves better performance than OTFS and OFDM in the presence of non-white noise, with gains exceeding 1 dB in most application scenarios.

Computing on Dirty Paper: Interference-Free Integrated Communication and Computing

Inspired by Costa's pioneering work on dirty paper coding (DPC), this paper proposes a novel scheme for integrated communication and computing (ICC), named Computing on Dirty Paper, whereby the transmission of discrete data symbols for communication, and over-the-air computation (AirComp) of nomographic functions can be achieved simultaneously over common multiple-access channels. In particular, the proposed scheme allows for the integration of communication and computation in a manner that is asymptotically interference-free, by precanceling the computing symbols at the transmitters (TXs) using DPC principles. A simulation-based assessment of the proposed ICC scheme under a single-input multiple-output (SIMO) setup is also offered, including the evaluation of performance for data detection, and of mean-squared-error (MSE) performance for function computation, over a block of symbols. The results validate the proposed method and demonstrate its ability to significantly outperform state-of-the-art (SotA) ICC schemes in terms of both bit error rate (BER) and MSE.

Secrecy-Driven Beamforming for Multi-User Integrated Sensing and Communication

This paper proposes a secure integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) framework for multi-user systems with multiple communication users (CUs) and adversarial targets, where the design problem is formulated to maximize secrecy rate under joint sensing and communication constraints. An efficient solution is presented based on an accelerated fractional programming method using a non-homogeneous complex quadratic transform (QT), which decomposes the problem into tractable subproblems for beamforming and artificial noise (AN) optimization. Unlike conventional artificial noise strategies, the proposed approach also exploits AN to enhance sensing while avoiding interference with legitimate users. Simulation results show significant gains in secrecy rate, communication reliability, and sensing accuracy, confirming the effectiveness and scalability of the proposed framework.

Low-Complexity Receiver Design for Multicarrier CAPA-based Systems in Doubly-Dispersive Channels

We propose a novel low-complexity receiver design for multicarrier continuous aperture array (CAPA) systems operating over doubly-dispersive (DD) channels. The receiver leverages a Gaussian Belief Propagation (GaBP)-based framework that hinges only on element-wise scalar operations for the detection of the transmitted symbols. Simulation results for the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS), and affine frequency division multiplexing (AFDM) waveforms demonstrate significant performance improvements in terms of uncoded bit error rate (BER) compared to conventional discrete antenna array systems, while maintaining very low computational complexity.
