A Secure ISAC Waveform Design Framework via Random Frequency and PRI Agility

This paper presents a novel framework for enhancing the security, data rate, and sensing performance of integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) systems. We employ a random frequency and pulse repetition interval (PRI) agility (RFPA) method for the waveform design, where the necessary random sequences are governed by shared secrets. These secrets, which can be pre-shared or generated via channel reciprocity, obfuscate critical radar parameters like Doppler frequency and pulse start times, thereby significantly impeding the ability to perform reconnaissance from a passive adversary without the secret key. To further introduce enhanced data throughput, we also introduce a hybrid information embedding scheme that integrates amplitude shift keying (ASK), phase shift keying (PSK), index modulation (IM), and spatial modulation (SM), for which a low-complexity sparse-matched filter receiver is proposed for accurate decoding with practical complexity. Finally, the excellent range-velocity resolution and clutter suppression of the proposed waveform are analyzed via the ambiguity function (AF).

Adversarially Robust MIMO Physical Layer Authentication for Non-Stationary Channels

We propose an adversarially robust physical layer authentication (AR-PLA) framework tailored for non-stationary multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless channels. The framework integrates sequential Bayesian decision-making, deep feature extraction via contrastive learning, and generative adversarial modeling to simulate adaptive spoofers. Unlike conventional methods that assume stationary channels or independent observations, our approach explicitly accounts for temporal and spatial correlations, line-of-sight (LoS) blockages, and dynamic spoofing strategies. A comprehensive analytical characterization of the authentication performance using both 2-state and 3-state hidden Markov models (HMMs) with moving-average online adaptation is also provided, with closed-form recursions for loglikelihood ratios, detection probabilities, and steady-state approximations, which demonstrate significant robustness improvement over classical sequential authentication schemes.

Chirp-Permuted AFDM: A Versatile Waveform Design for ISAC in 6G

We present a novel multicarrier waveform, termed chirp-permuted affine frequency division multiplexing (CP-AFDM), which introduces a unique chirp-permutation domain on top of the chirp subcarriers of the conventional AFDM. Rigorous analysis of the signal model and waveform properties, supported by numerical simulations, demonstrates that the proposed CP-AFDM preserves all core characteristics of affine frequency division multiplexing (AFDM) - including robustness to doubly-dispersive channels, peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR), and full delay-Doppler representation - while further enhancing ambiguity function resolution and peak-to-sidelobe ratio (PSLR) in the Doppler domain. These improvements establish CP-AFDM as a highly attractive candidate for emerging sixth generation (6G) use cases demanding both reliability and sensing-awareness. Moreover, by exploiting the vast degree of freedom in the chirp-permutation domain, two exemplary multifunctional applications are introduced: an index modulation (IM) technique over the permutation domain which achieves significant spectral efficiency gains, and a physical-layer security scheme that ensures practically perfect security through permutation-based keying, without requiring additional transmit energy or signaling overhead.

Optimized Sparse Network Coverage via L1-norm Minimization

The selection of nodes that can serve as cluster heads, local sinks and gateways is a critical challenge in distributed sensor and communication networks. This paper presents a novel framework for identifying a minimal set of nexus nodes to ensure full network coverage while minimizing cost. By formulating the problem as a convex relaxation of the NP-hard set cover problem, we integrate the graph theoretic centrality measures of node degree and betweenness centrality into a cost function optimized via a relaxed L1-norm minimization. The proposed approach is applicable to static and dynamic network scenarios and does not require location or distance estimation. Through simulations across various graph models and dynamic conditions, it is shown that the method achieves faster execution times (lower complexity) and competitive sparsity compared to classical greedy and genetic algorithms (GA), offering a robust, distributed, and cost-efficient node selection solution.

Integrated Communication and Computing in Time-Varying mmWave Channels

We propose a novel framework for integrated communication and computing (ICC) transceiver design in time-varying millimeter-wave (mmWave) channels. In particular, in order to cope with the dynamics of time-varying mmWave channels, the detection of communication symbols and the execution of an over-the-air computing (AirComp) operation are performed in parallel with channel tracking, as opposed to existing state-of-the-art (SotA) on ICC where perfect knowledge of the channel at all time instances is typically assumed. For clarity of exposition, we consider a single-input multiple-output (SIMO) uplink scenario where multiple single-antenna user equipment (UE) transmit to a base station (BS) equipped with multiple antennas, such that each UE, or edge device (ED), precodes its own transmit signal, while the BS, or access points (APs), also performs receive beamforming. The proposed transceiver framework then estimates channel state information (CSI) and data symbols in parallel, using a bilinear Gaussian belief propagation (BiGaBP) algorithm for joint channel and data detection (JCDE), aided by a channel prediction (CP) algorithm executed before each estimation window at the BS. The AirComp operation is then executed by means of an optimal combination of the residual signal. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme in performing ICC in challenging time-varying mmWave channels, with minimal degradation to both communication and computing performance.

Affine Filter Bank Modulation (AFBM): A Novel 6G ISAC Waveform with Low PAPR and OOBE

We propose the affine filter bank modulation (AFBM) waveform for enhanced integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) in sixth generation (6G), designed by drawing on concepts from classical filter bank multicarrier modulation (FBMC) theory and recent advances in chirp-domain waveforms, particularly affine frequency division multiplexing (AFDM). Specifically, AFBM exhibits several desirable properties, with emphasis on its remarkably low peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) and reduced out-of-band emission (OOBE) when benchmarked against the conventional AFDM waveform under doubly-dispersive (DD) channel conditions. In the communications setting, reliable symbol detection is achieved using a tailored low-complexity Gaussian belief propagation (GaBP)-based algorithm, while in the sensing setting, a range and velocity estimation approach is developed that integrates an expectation maximization (EM)-assisted probabilistic data association (PDA) framework to accurately identify surrounding targets. The highlighted performance and benefits of AFBM are validated through analytical and numerical evaluations, including conventional metrics such as ambiguity function (AF), bit error rate (BER), and root mean square error (RMSE), consolidating its position as a promising waveform for next-generation wireless systems.

Doubly-Dispersive Continuous MIMO Systems: Channel Modeling and Beamforming Design

We address the modeling and optimal beamforming (BF) design for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) continuous aperture array (CAPA) systems operating over doubly-dispersive (DD) channels. First, a comprehensive DD continuous MIMO (DDC MIMO) channel model that incorporates CAPAs at both the transmitter (TX) and receiver (RX) is derived, which is used to obtain explicit input-output (I/O) relations for various waveforms well suited to integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) and robust to DD channels, namely orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS), and affine frequency division multiplexing (AFDM). Then, functional optimization problems are formulated for the design of TX and RX BF matrices that maximize received power, in which novel low-complexity, closed-form solutions are obtained via the calculus of variations (CoV) method, yielding expressions closely related to the classical matched filter commonly used in conventional MIMO systems. Simulation results confirm that the proposed TX/RX BF designs with CAPAs provide significant performance and computational complexity gains over conventional MIMO systems in DD channels.

Rigid Body Localization and Tracking for 6G V2X: Algorithms, Applications, and Road to Adoption

Vehicle-to-everything (V2X) perception refers to a suite of technologies that empower vehicles to sense their environment and communicate with other entities, including surrounding vehicles, infrastructure, and cloud/edge networks. With the growing demands of autonomous driving, V2X perception has gained significant attention, particularly through the emergence of integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) frameworks. Within this landscape, rigid body localization (RBL) has emerged as a promising paradigm, enabling the estimation of not only the position and velocity of the targets, but also its three-dimensional (3D) geometric structure and orientation. This article introduces the concept of RBL, highlights its unique advantages and applications, identifies key technical challenges, and finally outlines future research directions. In addition, the potential of RBL in next-generation - e.g. beyond fifth generation (B5G) and sixth-generation (6G) - wireless systems applied to V2X perception is also discussed, with a focus on its role in standardization efforts and its relevance across automotive and industrial domains.

Flexible Intelligent Metasurfaces in High-Mobility MIMO Integrated Sensing and Communications

We propose a novel doubly-dispersive (DD) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel model incorporating flexible intelligent metasurfaces (FIMs), which is suitable for integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) in high-mobility scenarios. We then discuss how the proposed FIM-parameterized DD (FPDD) channel model can be applied in a logical manner to ISAC waveforms that are known to perform well in DD environments, namely, orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS), and affine frequency division multiplexing (AFDM). Leveraging the proposed model, we formulate an achievable rate maximization problem with a strong sensing constraint for all the aforementioned waveforms, which we then solve via a gradient ascent algorithm with closed-form gradients presented as a bonus. Our numerical results indicate that the achievable rate is significantly impacted by the emerging FIM technology with careful parametrization essential in obtaining strong ISAC performance across all waveforms suitable to mitigating the effects of DD channels.

Fairness-Aware Secure Integrated Sensing and Communications with Fractional Programming

We propose a novel secure integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) system designed to serve multiple communication users (CUs) and targets. To that end, we formulate an optimization problem that maximizes the secrecy rate under constraints balancing both communication and sensing requirements. To enhance fairness among users, an entropy-regularized fairness metric is introduced within the problem framework. We then propose a solution employing an accelerated quadratic transform (QT) with a non-homogeneous bound to iteratively solve two subproblems, thereby effectively optimizing the overall objective. This approach ensures robust security and fairness in resource allocation for ISAC systems. Finally, simulation results verify the performance gains in terms of average secrecy rate, average data rate, and beam gain.

Low-Complexity Receiver Design for Affine Filter Bank Modulation

We propose a low-complexity receiver structure for the recently introduced Affine Filter Bank Modulation (AFBM) scheme, which is a novel waveform designed for integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) systems operating in doubly-dispersive (DD) channels. The proposed receiver structure is based on the Gaussian Belief Propagation (GaBP) framework, making use of only element-wise scalar operations to perform detection of the transmitted symbols. Simulation results demonstrate that AFBM in conjunction with GaBP outperforms affine frequency division multiplexing (AFDM) in terms of bit error rates (BERs) in DD channels, while achieving very low out-of-band emissions (OOBE) in high-mobility scenarios.

Metasurfaces-Integrated Doubly-Dispersive MIMO: Channel Modeling and Optimization

The doubly-dispersive (DD) channel structure has played a pivotal role in wireless communications, particularly in high-mobility scenarios and integrated sensing and communications (ISAC), due to its ability to capture the key fading effects experienced by a transmitted signal as it propagates through a dynamic medium. However, extending the DD framework to multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, especially in environments artificially enhanced by reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) and stacked intelligent metasurfaces (SIM), remains a challenging open problem. In this chapter, a novel metasurfaces-parametrized DD (MPDD) channel model that integrates an arbitrary number of RISs, while also incorporating SIM at both the transmitter and receiver is introduced. Next, the application of this model to some key waveforms optimized for DD environments -- namely orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS), and affine frequency division multiplexing (AFDM) -- is discussed. Finally, the programmability of the proposed model is highlighted through an illustrative application, demonstrating its potential for enhancing waveform performance in SIM-assisted wireless systems.

A Flexible Design Framework for Integrated Communication and Computing Receivers

We propose a framework to design integrated communication and computing (ICC) receivers capable of simultaneously detecting data symbols and performing over-the-air computing (AirComp) in a manner that: a) is systematically generalizable to any nomographic function, b) scales to a massive number of user equipments (UEs) and edge devices (EDs), c) supports the computation of multiple independent functions (streams), and d) operates in a multi-access fashion whereby each transmitter can choose to transmit either data symbols, computing signals or both. For the sake of illustration, we design the proposed multi-stream and multi-access method under an uplink setting, where multiple single-antenna UEs/EDs simultaneously transmit data and computing signals to a single multiple-antenna base station (BS)/access point (AP). Under the communication functionality, the receiver aims to detect all independent communication symbols while treating the computing streams as aggregate interference which it seeks to mitigate; and conversely, under the computing functionality, to minimize the distortion over the computing streams while minimizing their mutual interference as well as the interference due to data symbols. To that end, the design leverages the Gaussian belief propagation (GaBP) framework relying only on element-wise scalar operations coupled with closed-form combiners purpose-built for the AirComp operation, which allows for its use in massive settings, as demonstrated by simulation results incorporating up to 200 antennas and 300 UEs/EDs. The efficacy of the proposed method under different loading conditions is also evaluated, with the performance of the scheme shown to approach fundamental limiting bounds in the under/fully loaded cases.

Doubly-Dispersive MIMO Channels with Stacked Intelligent Metasurfaces: Modeling, Parametrization, and Receiver Design

Introduced with the advent of statistical wireless channel models for high mobility communications and having a profound role in communication-centric (CC) integrated sensing and communications (ISAC), the doubly-dispersive (DD) channel structure has long been heralded as a useful tool enabling the capture of the most important fading effects undergone by an arbitrary time-domain transmit signal propagating through some medium. However, the incorporation of this model into multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system setups, relying on the recent paradigm-shifting transceiver architecture based on stacked intelligent metasurfaces (SIM), in an environment with reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) remains an open problem due to the many intricate details that have to be accounted for. In this paper, we fill this gap by introducing a novel DD MIMO channel model that incorporates an arbitrary number of RISs in the ambient, as well as SIMs equipping both the transmitter and receiver. We then discuss how the proposed metasurfaces-parametrized DD (MPDD) channel model can be seamlessly applied to waveforms that are known to perform well in DD environments, namely, orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS), and affine frequency division multiplexing (AFDM), with each having their own inherent advantages and disadvantages. An illustrative application of the programmable functionality of the proposed model is finally presented to showcase its potential for boosting the performance of the aforementioned waveforms. Our numerical results indicate that the design of waveforms suitable to mitigating the effects of DD channels is significantly impacted by the emerging SIM technology.

Affine Filter Bank Modulation: A New Waveform for High Mobility Communications

We propose a new waveform suitable for integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) systems facing doubly-dispersive (DD) channel conditions, as typically encountered in high mobility scenarios. Dubbed Affine Filter Bank Modulation (AFBM), this novel waveform is designed based on a filter-bank structure, known for its ability to suppress out-of-band emissions (OOBE), while integrating a discrete affine Fourier transform (DAFT) precoding stage which yields low peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) and robustness to DD distortion, as well as other features desirable for ISAC. Analytical and simulation results demonstrate that AFBM maintains quasi-orthogonality similar to that of affine frequency division multiplexing (AFDM) in DD channels, while achieving PAPR levels 3 dB lower, in addition to OOBE as low as -100 dB when implemented with PHYDYAS prototype filters.

Parametrized Stacked Intelligent Metasurfaces for Bistatic Integrated Sensing and Communications

We consider stacked intelligent metasurfaces (SIMs) as a tool to improve the performance of bistatic integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) schemes. To that end, we optimize the SIMs and design a radar parameter estimation (RPE) scheme aimed at enhancing radar sensing capabilities as well as communication performance under ISAC-enabling waveforms known to perform well in doubly-dispersive (DD) channels. The SIM optimization is done via a min-max problem formulation solved via steepest ascent with closed-form gradients, while the RPE is carried out via a compressed sensing-based probabilistic data association (PDA) algorithm. Our numerical results indicate that the design of waveforms suitable to mitigating the effects of DD channels is significantly impacted by the emerging SIM technology.

Quaternion Domain Super MDS for 3D Localization

We propose a novel low-complexity three-dimensional (3D) localization algorithm for wireless sensor networks, termed quaternion-domain super multidimensional scaling (QD-SMDS). This algorithm reformulates the conventional SMDS, which was originally developed in the real domain, into the quaternion domain. By representing 3D coordinates as quaternions, the method enables the construction of a rank-1 Gram edge kernel (GEK) matrix that integrates both relative distance and angular (phase) information between nodes, maximizing the noise reduction effect achieved through low-rank truncation via singular value decomposition (SVD). The simulation results indicate that the proposed method demonstrates a notable enhancement in localization accuracy relative to the conventional SMDS algorithm, particularly in scenarios characterized by substantial measurement errors.

Frequency Hopping Waveform Design for Secure Integrated Sensing and Communications

We introduce a comprehensive approach to enhance the security, privacy, and sensing capabilities of integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) systems by leveraging random frequency agility (RFA) and random pulse repetition interval (PRI) agility (RPA) techniques. The combination of these techniques, which we refer to collectively as random frequency and PRI agility (RFPA), with channel reciprocity-based key generation (CRKG) obfuscates both Doppler frequency and PRIs, significantly hindering the chances that passive adversaries can successfully estimate radar parameters. In addition, a hybrid information embedding method integrating amplitude shift keying (ASK), phase shift keying (PSK), index modulation (IM), and spatial modulation (SM) is incorporated to increase the achievable bit rate of the system significantly. Next, a sparse-matched filter receiver design is proposed to efficiently decode the embedded information with a low bit error rate (BER). Finally, a novel RFPA-based secret generation scheme using CRKG ensures secure code creation without a coordinating authority. The improved range and velocity estimation and reduced clutter effects achieved with the method are demonstrated via the evaluation of the ambiguity function (AF) of the proposed waveforms.
