Quantum Coherence from Periodic Driving with Laser Pulses and Decay

Non-equilibrium physics is a particularly fascinating field of current research. Generically, driven systems are gradually heated up so that quantum effects die out. In contrast, we show that a driven central spin model including controlled dissipation in a highly excited state allows us to distill quantum coherent states, indicated by a substantial reduction of entropy. The model is experimentally accessible in quantum dots or molecules with unpaired electrons. The potential of preparing and manipulating coherent states by designed driving potentials is pointed out.

Conservation laws protect dynamic spin correlations from decay: Limited role of integrability in the central spin model

Mazur's inequality renders statements about persistent correlations possible. We generalize it in a convenient form applicable to any set of linearly independent constants of motion. This approach is used to show rigorously that a fraction of the initial spin correlations persists indefinitely in the isotropic central spin model unless the average coupling vanishes. The central spin model describes a major mechanism of decoherence in a large class of potential realizations of quantum bits. Thus the derived results contribute significantly to the understanding of the preservation of coherence. We will show that persisting quantum correlations are not linked to the integrability of the model, but caused by a finite operator overlap with a finite set of constants of motion.

Varied Perturbation Theory for the Dispersion Dip in the Two-Dimensional Heisenberg Quantum Antiferromagnet

We study the roton-like dip in the magnon dispersion at the boundary of the Brillouin zone in the isotropic S=1/2 Heisenberg quantum antiferromagnet. This high-energy feature is sometimes seen as indication of a fractionalization of the magnons to spinons. In this article, we provide evidence that the description of the dip in terms of magnons can be improved significantly by applying more advanced evaluation schemes. In particular, we illustrate the usefulness of the application of the principle of minimal sensitivity in varied perturbation theory. Thereby, we provide an example for the application of this approach to an extended condensed matter problem governed by correlations which can trigger analogous investigations for many other systems.

Effects of ring exchange interaction on the Neel phase of two-dimensional, spatially anisotropic, frustrated Heisenberg quantum antiferromagnet

Higher order quantum effects on the magnetic phase diagram induced by four-spin ring exchange on plaquettes are investigated for a two-dimensional quantum antiferromagnet with S=1/2. Spatial anisotropy and frustration are allowed for. Using a perturbative spin-wave expansion up to second order in 1/S we obtain the spin-wave energy dispersion, sublattice magnetization, and the magnetic phase diagram. We find that for substantial four-spin ring exchange the quantum fluctuations are stronger than in the standard Heisenberg model. A moderate amount of four-spin ring exchange couplings stabilizes the ordered antiferromagnetic Neel state while a large amount renders it unstable. Comparison with inelastic neutron scattering data points toward a moderate ring exchange coupling of 27% to 29% of the nearest-neighbor exchange coupling.

Spin-wave velocities, density of magnetic excitations, and NMR relaxation in ferro-pnictides

We perform an analysis of the experimentally known temperature dependence of the staggered magnetization in the antiferromagnetic phase. This analysis allows us to put an upper limit on the unknown value of the spin wave velocity along the stripes of equal spin direction (spin stripes). The velocity is about ten times smaller than the velocity perpendicular to the spin stripes. The strongly anisotropic spin-wave dispersion implies a high density of low energy magnetic excitations. We demonstrate that this high density strongly enhances the $^{75}$As NMR spin-lattice relaxation via the Raman scattering of magnons. We derive the polarization dependence of this relaxation channel and find very good agreement with experimental data. The high density of low energy magnetic excitations deduced from our phenomenological analysis supports the scenario that ferro-pnictides are close to a quantum phase transition.

Pnictides as frustrated quantum antiferromagnet close to a quantum phase transition

We present a detailed description of the dynamics of the magnetic modes in the recently discovered superconducting pnictides using reliable self-consistent spin-wave theory and series expansion. Contrary to linear spin-wave theory, no gapless mode occurs at the Néel wave vector. We discuss the scenario that the static magnetic moment is strongly reduced by magnetic fluctuations arising from the vicinity to a quantum phase transition. Smoking gun experiments to verify this scenario are proposed and possible results are predicted. Intriguingly in this scenario, the structural transition at finite temperature would be driven by an Ising transition in directional degrees of freedom.

Spectral Properties of Magnetic Excitations in Cuprate Two-Leg Ladder Systems

This article summarizes and extends the recent developments in the microscopic modeling of the magnetic excitations in cuprate two-leg ladder systems. The microscopic Hamiltonian comprises dominant Heisenberg exchange terms plus an additional four-spin interaction which is about five times smaller. We give an overview over the relevant energies like the one-triplon dispersion, the energies of two-triplon bound states and the positions of multi-triplon continua and over relevant spectral properties like spectral weights and spectral densities in the parameter regime appropriate for cuprate systems. It is concluded that an almost complete understanding of the magnetic excitations in undoped cuprate ladders has been obtained as measured by inelastic neutron scattering, inelastic light (Raman) scattering and infrared absorption.

The Quartic Oscillator: a Non-Perturbative Study by Continuous Unitary Transformations

The quantum quartic oscillator is investigated in order to test the many-body technique of the continuous unitary transformations. The quartic oscillator is sufficiently simple to allow a detailed study and comparison of various approximation schemes. Due to its simplicity, it can be used as pedagogical introduction in the unitary transformations. Both the spectrum and the spectral weights are discussed.

Dynamic Structure Factor of the Two-Dimensional Shastry-Sutherland Model

We calculate the 2-triplon contribution to the dynamic structure factor of the 2-dimensional Shastry-Sutherland model, realized in SrCu2(BO3)2, by means of perturbative continuous unitary transformations. For realistic parameters we find flat bound 2-triplon bands. These bands show large weight in the structure factor depending strongly on momentum. So our findings permit a quantitative understanding of high precision inelastic neutron scattering experiments.

The Structure of Operators in Effective Particle-Conserving Models

For many-particle systems defined on lattices we investigate the global structure of effective Hamiltonians and observables obtained by means of a suitable basis transformation. We study transformations which lead to effective Hamiltonians conserving the number of excitations. The same transformation must be used to obtain effective observables. The analysis of the structure shows that effective operators give rise to a simple and intuitive perspective on the initial problem. The systematic calculation of n-particle irreducible quantities becomes possible constituting a significant progress. Details how to implement the approach perturbatively for a large class of systems are presented.

Thermodynamic Properties of Spin Ladders with Cyclic Exchange

By high temperature series expansion and exact complete diagonalization the magnetic susceptibility chi(T) and the specific heat C(T) of a two-leg S=1/2 ladder with cyclic (4-spin) exchange are computed. Both methods yield convincing results for not too small temperatures. We find that a small amount of cyclic exchange influences the thermodynamical properties significantly. Our results can serve as reliable basis for an efficient analysis of experimental data

Symmetries and Triplet Dispersion in a Modified Shastry-Sutherland Model for SrCu_2(BO_3)_2

We investigate the one-triplet dispersion in a modified Shastry-Sutherland Model for SrCu_2(BO_3)_2 by means of a series expansion about the limit of strong dimerization. Our perturbative method is based on a continuous unitary transformation that maps the original Hamiltonian to an effective, energy quanta conserving block diagonal Hamiltonian H_{eff}. The dispersion splits into two branches which are nearly degenerated. We analyse the symmetries of the model and show that space group operations are necessary to explain the degeneracy of the dispersion at k=0 and at the border of the magnetic Brillouin zone. Moreover, we investigate the behaviour of the dispersion for small |k| and compare our results to INS data.

SrCu_2(BO_3)_2 - a Two Dimensional Spin Liquid

We study an extended Shastry-Sutherland model for SrCu_2(BO_3)_2 and analyze the low lying parts of the energy spectrum by means of a perturbative unitary transformation based on flow equations. The derivation of the 1-magnon dispersion (elementary triplets) is discussed. Additionally, we give a quantitative description (symmetries and energies) of bound states made from two elementary triplets. Our high order results allow to fix the model parameters for SrCu_2(BO_3)_2 precisely: J_1=6.16(10)meV, x:=J_2/J_1=0.603(3), J_\perp=1.3(2)meV. To our knowledge this is the first quantitative treatment of bound states in a true 2d model.

Dispersion and Symmetry of Bound States in the Shastry-Sutherland Model

Bound states made from two triplet excitations on the Shastry-Sutherland (ShaSu) lattice are investigated. Based on the perturbative unitary transformation by flow equations quantitative properties like dispersions and qualitative properties like symmetries are determined. The high order results (up to (J_2/J_1)^{14}) permit to fix the parameters of SrCu_2(BO_3)_2 precisely: J_1=6.16(10)meV, x:=J_2/J_1=0.603(3), J_\perp=1.3(2)meV. At the border of the magnetic Brillouin zone (MBZ) a general double degeneracy is derived. An unexpected instability in the triplet channel at x=0.63 indicates a first order transition towards a triplet condensate, related to classical helical order.

Triplet Dispersion in CuGeO_3: Perturbative Analysis

We reconsider the 2d model for CuGeO_3 introduced previously (Phys. Rev. Lett. 79, 163 (1997)). Using a computer aided perturbation method based on flow equations we expand the 1-triplet dispersion up to 10th order. The expansion is provided as a polynom in the model parameters. The latter are fixed by fitting the theoretical result to experimental data obtained by INS. For a dimerization delta = 0.08(1) we find an excellent agreement with experiment. This value is at least 2 to 3 times higher than values deduced previously from 1d chain approaches. For the intrachain frustration alpha_0 we find a smaller value of 0.25(3). The existence of interchain frustration conjectured previously is confirmed by the analysis of temperature dependent susceptibility.

High Temperature Expansion for Frustrated and Unfrustrated S=1/2 Spin Chains

A computer aided high temperature expansion of the magnetic susceptibility and the magnetic specific heat is presented and demonstrated for frustrated and unfrustrated spin chains. The results are analytic in nature since the calculations are performed in the integer domain. They are provided in the form of polynomials allowing quick and easy fits. Various representations of the results are discussed. Combining high temperature expansion coefficients and dispersion data yields very good agreement already in low order of the expansion which makes this approach very promising for the application to other problems, for instance in higher dimensions.

Perturbation Theory by Flow Equations: Dimerized and Frustrated S=1/2 Chain

The flow equation method (Wegner 1994) is used as continuous unitary transformation to construct perturbatively effective Hamiltonians. The method is illustrated in detail for dimerized and frustrated antiferromagnetic S=1/2 chains. The effective Hamiltonians conserve the number of elementary excitations which are S=1 magnons for the dimerized chains. The sectors of different number of excitations are clearly separated. Easy-to-use results for the gap, the dispersion and the ground state energies of the chains are provided.
