Soliton Lattices in the Incommensurate Spin-Peierls Phase: Local Distortions and Magnetizations

It is shown that nonadiabatic fluctuations of the soliton lattice in the spin-Peierls system CuGeO_3 lead to an important reduction of the NMR line widths. These fluctuations are the zero-point motion of the massless phasonic excitations. Furthermore, we show that the discrepancy of X-ray and NMR soliton widths can be understood as the difference between a distortive and a magnetic width. Their ratio is controlled by the frustration of the spin system. By this work, theoretical and experimental results can be reconciled in two important points.

Unified Quantum Mechanical Picture for Confined Spinons in Dimerized and Frustrated Spin S=1/2 Chains

A quantum mechanical picture is presented to describe the behavior of confined spinons in a variety of S=1/2 chains. The confinement is due to dimerization and frustration and it manifests itselfas a nonlinear potential V(x)~ |x|^b, centered at chain ends (b <= 1) or produced by modulation kinks (b > 1). The calculation extends to weak or zero frustration some previous ideas valid for spinons in strongly frustrated spin chains. The local magnetization patterns of the confined spinons are calculated. A (minimum) enhancement of the local moments of about 11/3 over a single S=1/2 is found. Estimates for excitation energies and binding lengths are obtained.

Nonadiabatic Approach to Spin-Peierls Transitions via Flow Equations

The validity of the adiabatic approach to spin-Peierls transitions is assessed. An alternative approach is developed which maps the initial magneto-elastic problem to an effective magnetic problem only. Thus the equivalence of magneto-elastic solitons and magnetic spinons is shown. No soft phonon is required for the transition. Temperature dependent couplings are predicted in accordance with the analysis of experimental data.

Lattice dependence of saturated ferromagnetism in the Hubbard model

We investigate the instability of the saturated ferromagnetic ground state (Nagaoka state) in the Hubbard model on various lattices in dimensions d=2 and d=3. A variational resolvent approach is developed for the Nagaoka instability both for U = infinity and for U < infinity which can easily be evaluated in the thermodynamic limit on all common lattices. Our results significantly improve former variational bounds for a possible Nagaoka regime in the ground state phase diagram of the Hubbard model. We show that a pronounced particle-hole asymmetry in the density of states and a diverging density of states at the lower band edge are the most important features in order to stabilize Nagaoka ferromagnetism, particularly in the low density limit.

Symmetry and dimension of the magnon dispersion of inorganic spin-Peierls systems

The data on the dispersion of the magnetic excitations of CuGeO_3 in the spin-Peierls dimerized phase are analyzed. On the basis of the lattice structure it is shown that even along the chains the $d=2$ character cannot be neglected. The symmetry of the dispersion differs from the one assumed so far. The magnetic resonance data is reinterpreted. The possibility of interchain rather than intrachain frustration is discussed.

Conductivity in a symmetry broken phase: Spinless fermions with $1/d$ corrections

The dynamic conductivity $σ(ω)$ of strongly correlated electrons in a symmetry broken phase is investigated in the present work. The model considered consists of spinless fermions with repulsive interaction on a simple cubic lattice. The investigated symmetry broken phase is the charge density wave (CDW) with wave vector $Q=(π,π,π)^\dagger$ which occurs at half-filling. The calculations are based on the high dimensional approach, i.e. an expansion in the inverse dimension $1/d$ is used. The finite dimensionality is accounted for by the inclusion of linear terms in $1/d$ and the true finite dimensional DOS. Special care is paid to the setup of a conserving approximation in the sense of Baym/Kadanoff without inconsistencies. The resulting Bethe-Salpeter equation is solved for the dynamic conductivity in the non symmetry broken and in the symmetry broken phase (AB-CDW). The dc-conductivity is reduced drastically in the CDW. Yet it does not vanish in the limit $T \to 0$ due to a subtle cancellation of diverging mobility and vanishing DOS. In the dynamic conductivity $σ(ω)$ the energy gap induced by the symmetry breaking is clearly discernible. In addition, the vertex corrections of order $1/d$ lead to an excitonic resonance lying within the gap.

Exact single spin flip for the Hubbard model in $d=\infty$

It is shown that the dynamics of a single $\downarrow$-electron interacting with a band of $\uparrow$-electrons can be calculated exactly in the limit of infinite dimension. The corresponding Green function is determined as a continued fraction. It is used to investigate the stability of saturated ferromagnetism and the nature of the ground state for two generic non-bipartite infinite dimensional lattices. Non Fermi liquid behavior is found. For certain dopings the $\downarrow$-electron is bound to the $\uparrow$-holes.
