Learning to Assist Different Wearers in Multitasks: Efficient and Individualized Human-In-the-Loop Adaption Framework for Exoskeleton Robots

One of the typical purposes of using lower-limb exoskeleton robots is to provide assistance to the wearer by supporting their weight and augmenting their physical capabilities according to a given task and human motion intentions. The generalizability of robots across different wearers in multiple tasks is important to ensure that the robot can provide correct and effective assistance in actual implementation. However, most lower-limb exoskeleton robots exhibit only limited generalizability. Therefore, this paper proposes a human-in-the-loop learning and adaptation framework for exoskeleton robots to improve their performance in various tasks and for different wearers. To suit different wearers, an individualized walking trajectory is generated online using dynamic movement primitives and Bayes optimization. To accommodate various tasks, a task translator is constructed using a neural network to generalize a trajectory to more complex scenarios. These generalization techniques are integrated into a unified variable impedance model, which regulates the exoskeleton to provide assistance while ensuring safety. In addition, an anomaly detection network is developed to quantitatively evaluate the wearer's comfort, which is considered in the trajectory learning procedure and contributes to the relaxation of conflicts in impedance control. The proposed framework is easy to implement, because it requires proprioceptive sensors only to perform and deploy data-efficient learning schemes. This makes the exoskeleton practical for deployment in complex scenarios, accommodating different walking patterns, habits, tasks, and conflicts. Experiments and comparative studies on a lower-limb exoskeleton robot are performed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed framework.

Safe and Individualized Motion Planning for Upper-limb Exoskeleton Robots Using Human Demonstration and Interactive Learning

A typical application of upper-limb exoskeleton robots is deployment in rehabilitation training, helping patients to regain manipulative abilities. However, as the patient is not always capable of following the robot, safety issues may arise during the training. Due to the bias in different patients, an individualized scheme is also important to ensure that the robot suits the specific conditions (e.g., movement habits) of a patient, hence guaranteeing effectiveness. To fulfill this requirement, this paper proposes a new motion planning scheme for upper-limb exoskeleton robots, which drives the robot to provide customized, safe, and individualized assistance using both human demonstration and interactive learning. Specifically, the robot first learns from a group of healthy subjects to generate a reference motion trajectory via probabilistic movement primitives (ProMP). It then learns from the patient during the training process to further shape the trajectory inside a moving safe region. The interactive data is fed back into the ProMP iteratively to enhance the individualized features for as long as the training process continues. The robot tracks the individualized trajectory under a variable impedance model to realize the assistance. Finally, the experimental results are presented in this paper to validate the proposed control scheme.

Physical-layer Adversarial Robustness for Deep Learning-based Semantic Communications

End-to-end semantic communications (ESC) rely on deep neural networks (DNN) to boost communication efficiency by only transmitting the semantics of data, showing great potential for high-demand mobile applications. We argue that central to the success of ESC is the robust interpretation of conveyed semantics at the receiver side, especially for security-critical applications such as automatic driving and smart healthcare. However, robustifying semantic interpretation is challenging as ESC is extremely vulnerable to physical-layer adversarial attacks due to the openness of wireless channels and the fragileness of neural models. Toward ESC robustness in practice, we ask the following two questions: Q1: For attacks, is it possible to generate semantic-oriented physical-layer adversarial attacks that are imperceptible, input-agnostic and controllable? Q2: Can we develop a defense strategy against such semantic distortions and previously proposed adversaries? To this end, we first present MobileSC, a novel semantic communication framework that considers the computation and memory efficiency in wireless environments. Equipped with this framework, we propose SemAdv, a physical-layer adversarial perturbation generator that aims to craft semantic adversaries over the air with the abovementioned criteria, thus answering the Q1. To better characterize the realworld effects for robust training and evaluation, we further introduce a novel adversarial training method SemMixed to harden the ESC against SemAdv attacks and existing strong threats, thus answering the Q2. Extensive experiments on three public benchmarks verify the effectiveness of our proposed methods against various physical adversarial attacks. We also show some interesting findings, e.g., our MobileSC can even be more robust than classical block-wise communication systems in the low SNR regime.

SSN: Stockwell Scattering Network for SAR Image Change Detection

Recently, synthetic aperture radar (SAR) image change detection has become an interesting yet challenging direction due to the presence of speckle noise. Although both traditional and modern learning-driven methods attempted to overcome this challenge, deep convolutional neural networks (DCNNs)-based methods are still hindered by the lack of interpretability and the requirement of large computation power. To overcome this drawback, wavelet scattering network (WSN) and Fourier scattering network (FSN) are proposed. Combining respective merits of WSN and FSN, we propose Stockwell scattering network (SSN) based on Stockwell transform which is widely applied against noisy signals and shows advantageous characteristics in speckle reduction. The proposed SSN provides noise-resilient feature representation and obtains state-of-art performance in SAR image change detection as well as high computational efficiency. Experimental results on three real SAR image datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Recovery of the nonlinearity from the modified scattering map

We consider a class of one-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equations of the form \[ (i\partial_t+Δ)u = [1+a]|u|^2 u. \] For suitable localized functions $a$, such equations admit a small-data modified scattering theory, which incorporates the standard logarithmic phase correction. In this work, we prove that the small-data modified scattering behavior uniquely determines the inhomogeneity $a$.

Asymptotic stability and classification of multi-solitons for Klein-Gordon equations

Focusing on multi-solitons for the Klein-Gordon equations, in first part of this paper, we establish their conditional asymptotic stability. In the second part of this paper, we classify pure multi-solitons which are solutions converging to multi-solitons in the energy space as $t\rightarrow\infty$. Using Strichartz estimates developed in our earlier work \cite{CJ2} and the modulation techniques, we show that if a solution stays close to the multi-soliton family, then it scatters to the multi-soliton family in the sense that the solution will converge in large time to a superposition of Lorentz-transformed solitons (with slightly modified velocities), and a radiation term which is at main order a free wave. Moreover, we construct a finite-codimension centre-stable manifold around the well-separated multi-soliton family. Finally, given different Lorentz parameters and arbitrary centers, we show that all the corresponding pure multi-solitons form a finite-dimension manifold.

Strichartz estimates for Klein-Gordon equations with moving potentials

We study linear Klein-Gordon equations with moving potentials motivated by the stability analysis of traveling waves and multi-solitons. In this paper, Strichartz estimates, local energy decay and the scattering theory for these models are established. The results and estimates obtained in this paper will be used to study the interaction of solitons and the stability of multisolitons of nonlinear Klein-Gordon equations.

Ultrasensitive Sub-monolayer Palladium Induced Chirality Switching and Topological Evolution of Skyrmions

Chiral spin textures are fundamentally interesting, with promise for device applications. Stabilizing chirality is conventionally achieved by introducing Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) in asymmetric multilayers where the thickness of each layer is at least a few monolayers. Here we report an ultrasensitive chirality switching in (Ni/Co)n multilayer induced by capping with only 0.22 monolayer of Pd. Using spin-polarized low-energy electron microscopy, we monitor the gradual evolution of domain walls from left-handed to right-handed Neel walls and quantify the DMI induced by the Pd capping layer. We also observe the chiral evolution of a skyrmion during the DMI switching, where no significant topological protection is found as the skyrmion winding number varies. This corresponds to a minimum energy cost of < 1 attojoule during the skyrmion chirality switching. Our results demonstrate the detailed chirality evolution within skyrmions during the DMI sign switching, which is relevant to practical applications of skyrmionic devices.

On the $1$d cubic NLS with a non-generic potential

We consider the $1d$ cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation with an external potential $V$ that is non-generic. Without making any parity assumption on the data, but assuming that the zero energy resonance of the associated Schrödinger operator is either odd or even, we prove global-in-time quantitative bounds and asymptotics for small solutions. First, we use a simple modification of the basis for the distorted Fourier transform (dFT) to resolve the (possible) discontinuity at zero energy due to the presence of a resonance and the absence of symmetry of the solution. We then use a refined analysis of the low frequency structure of the (modified) nonlinear spectral distribution, and employ smoothing estimates in the setting of non-generic potentials.

Lieb lattices formed by real atoms on Ag(111) and their lattice constant dependent electronic properties

Scanning tunneling microscopy is a powerful tool to build artificial atomic structures even not exist in nature but possess exotic properties. We here constructed Lieb lattices with different lattice constants by real atoms, i.e., Fe atoms on Ag(111) and probed their electronic properties. We find a surprising long-range effective electron wavefunction overlap between Fe adatoms as it exhibits a 1/r2-dependence with the interatomic distance r instead of the theoretically predicted exponential one. Combining control experiments, tight-binding and Green's function calculations, we attribute the observed long-range overlap to be enabled by the surface state. Our findings not only enrich the understanding of the electron wavefunction overlap, but also provide a convenient platform to design and explore the artificial structures and future devices with real atoms.

The $1$d nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a weighted $L^1$ potential

We consider the $1d$ cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a large external potential $V$ with no bound states. We prove global regularity and quantitative bounds for small solutions under mild assumptions on $V$. In particular, we do not require any differentiability of $V$, and make spatial decay assumptions that are weaker than those found in the literature (see for example \cite{Del,N,GPR}). We treat both the case of generic and non-generic potentials, with some additional symmetry assumptions in the latter case. Our approach is based on the combination of three main ingredients: the Fourier transform adapted to the Schrödinger operator, basic bounds on pseudo-differential operators that exploit the structure of the Jost function, and improved local decay and smoothing-type estimates. An interesting aspect of the proof is an "approximate commutation" identity for a suitable notion of a vectorfield, which allows us to simplify the previous approaches and extend the known results to a larger class of potentials. Finally, under our weak assumptions we can include the interesting physical case of a barrier potential as well as recover the result of \cite{MMS} for a delta potential.

Long-time asymptotics of the modified KdV equation in weighted Sobolev spaces

The long time behavior of solutions to the defocusing modified Korteweg-de vries (MKdV) equation is established for initial conditions in some weighted Sobolev spaces. Our approach is based on the nonlinear steepest descent method of Deift and Zhou and its reformulation by Dieng and McLaughlin through $\overline{\partial}$-derivatives. To extend the asymptotics to solutions with initial data in lower regularity spaces, we apply a global approximation via PDE techniques.

Long-time asymptotics and stability for the sine-Gordon equation

In this paper, we study the long-time dynamics and stability properties of the sine-Gordon equation $$f_{tt}-f_{xx}+\sin f=0.$$ Firstly, we use the nonlinear steepest descent for Riemann-Hilbert problems to compute the long-time asymptotics of the solutions to the sine-Gordon equation whose initial condition belongs to some weighted Sobolev spaces. Secondly, we study the asymptotic stability of the sine-Gordon equation. It is known that the obstruction to the asymptotic stability of the sine-Gordon equation in the energy space is the existence of small breathers which is also closely related to the emergence of wobbling kinks. Combining the long-time asymptotics and a refined approximation argument, we analyze the asymptotic stability properties of the sine-Gordon equation in weighted energy spaces. Our stability analysis gives a criterion for the weight which is sharp up to the endpoint so that the asymptotic stability holds.

Kink networks for scalar fields in dimension 1+1

We consider a scalar field equation in dimension $1+1$ with a positive external potential having non-degenerate isolated zeros. We construct weakly interacting pure multi-solitons, that is solutions converging exponentially in time to a superposition of Lorentz-transformed kinks, in the case of distinct velocities. We find that these solutions form a $2K$-dimensional smooth manifold in the space of solutions, where $K$ is the number of the kinks. We prove that this manifold is invariant under the transformations corresponding to the invariances of the equation, that is space-time translations and Lorentz boosts.

Chirality-induced zigzag domain wall in in-plane magnetized ultrathin films

The domain structure in in-plane magnetized Fe/Ni/W(110) films is investigated using spin-polarized low-energy electron microscopy. A novel transition of the domain wall shape from a zigzag-like pattern to straight is observed as a function of the film thickness, which is triggered by the transition of the domain wall type from out-of-plane chiral wall to in-plane Néel wall. The contribution of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction to the wall energy is proposed to explain the transition of the domain wall shape, which is supported by Monte-Carlo simulations.
