Strichartz estimates for the Klein--Gordon equation in $\mathbb{R}^{3+1}$

In this paper we prove standard and reversed Strichartz estimates for the Klein--Gordon equation in $\mathbb{R}^{3+1}$. Instead of the Fourier theory, our analysis is based on fundamental solutions of the free equations and fractional integrations. In the final part of this paper, we apply Strichartz estimates in the study of a semilinear Klein--Gordon equation.

Observation of hydrogen-induced Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and reversible switching of magnetic chirality

The Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) has drawn great attention as it stabilizes magnetic chirality, with important implications in fundamental and applied research. This antisymmetric exchange interaction is induced by the broken inversion symmetry at interfaces or in non-centrosymmetric lattices. Significant interfacial DMI was found often at magnetic / heavy-metal interfaces with large spin-orbit coupling. Recent studies have shown promise of induced DMI at interfaces involving light elements such as carbon (graphene) or oxygen. Here we report direct observation of induced DMI by chemisorption of the lightest element, hydrogen, on a ferromagnetic layer at room temperature, which is supported by density functional theory calculations. We further demonstrate a reversible chirality transition of the magnetic domain walls due to the induced DMI via hydrogen chemisorption/desorption. These results shed new light on the understanding of DMI in low atomic number materials and design of novel chiral spintronics and magneto-ionic devices.

Nonlinear modulational instabililty of the Stokes waves in 2d full water waves

The well-known Stokes waves refer to periodic traveling waves under the gravity at the free surface of a two dimensional full water wave system. In this paper, we prove that small-amplitude Stokes waves with infinite depth are nonlinearly unstable under long-wave perturbations. Our approach is based on the modulational approximation of the water wave system and the instability mechanism of the focusing cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation.

Orbital stability and instability of periodic wave solutions for $ϕ^{4n}$-models

In this work we study the orbital stability/instability in the energy space of a specific family of periodic wave solutions of the general $ϕ^{4n}$-model for all $n\in\mathbb{N}$. This family of periodic solutions are orbiting around the origin in the corresponding phase portrait and, in the standing case, are related (in a proper sense) with the aperiodic Kink solution that connect the states $-\tfrac{1}{2}$ with $\tfrac{1}{2}$. In the traveling case, we prove the orbital instability in the whole energy space for all $n\in\mathbb{N}$, while in the standing case we prove that, under some additional parity assumptions, these solutions are orbitally stable for all $n\in\mathbb{N}$.

In-plane Néel wall chirality and orientation of interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya vector in magnetic films

The interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) is of great interest as it can stabilize chiral spin structures in thin films. Experiments verifying the orientation of the interfacial DMI vector remain rare, in part due to the difficulty of separating vector components of DMI. In this study, Fe/Ni bilayers and Co/Ni multilayers were deposited epitaxially onto Cu(001) and Pt(111) substrates, respectively. By tailoring the effective anisotropy, spin reorientation transitions (SRTs) are employed to probe the orientation of the DMI vector by measuring the spin structure of domain walls on both sides of the SRTs. The interfacial DMI is found to be sufficiently strong to stabilize chiral Néel walls in the out-of-plane magnetized regimes, while achiral Néel walls are observed in the in-plane magnetized regimes. These findings experimentally confirm that the out-of-plane component of the DMI vector is insignificant in these fcc(001) and fcc(111) oriented interfaces, even in the presence of atomic steps.

Optical imaging of antiferromagnetic domains in ultrathin CoO(001) films

Antiferromagnetic (AFM) domains in ultrathin CoO(001) films are imaged by a wide-field optical microscopy using magneto-optical birefringence effect. The magnetic origin of observed optical contrast is confirmed by the spin orientation manipulation through exchange coupling in Fe/CoO(001) bilayer. The finite size effect of ordering temperature for ultrathin single crystal CoO film is revealed by the thickness and temperature dependent measurement of birefringence contrast. The magneto-optical birefringence effect is found to strongly depend on the photon energy of incident light, and a surprising large polarization rotation angle up to 168.5 mdeg is obtained from a 4.6 nm CoO film with a blue light source, making it possible to further investigate the evolution of AFM domains in AFM ultrathin film under external field.

Self-decoupled tetrapodal perylene molecules for luminescence studies of isolated emitters on Au(111)

Self-decoupled tetrapodal perylene molecules were designed, synthesized, and deposited on the Au(111) surface through the electrosprayionization technique. Photoluminescence and lifetime measurements show that the chromophore groups of the designed molecules are welldecoupled from the gold substrate. Preliminary scanning tunneling microscopy induced luminescence measurements indicate theobservation of molecule-specific emissions from isolated single tetrapodal perylene molecules adsorbed directly on Au(111). The emergenceof significant emission when the tip is positioned at the molecular center suggests that there is a considerable vertical component of the transitiondipole of the designed molecule along the tip axial direction. Our results may open up a route for the realization of nanolight sourcesand plasmonic devices based on organic molecules.

Soliton resolution for the modified KdV equation

The soliton resolution for the focusing modified Korteweg-de vries (mKdV) equation is established for initial conditions in some weighted Sobolev spaces. Our approach is based on the nonlinear steepest descent method and its reformulation through $\bar{\partial}$-derivatives. From the view of stationary points, we give precise asymptotic formulas along trajectory $x=\textrm{v}t$ for any fixed $ \textrm{v} $. To extend the asymptotics to solutions with initial data in low regularity spaces, we apply a global approximation via PDE techniques. As byproducts of our long-time asymptotics, we also obtain the asymptotic stability of nonlinear structures involving solitons and breathers.

Wave equations with moving potentials

In this paper, we study the endpoint reversed Strichartz estimates along general time-like trajectories for wave equations in $\mathbb{R}^{3}$. We also discuss some applications of the reversed Strichartz estimates and the structure of wave operators to the wave equation with one potential. These techniques are useful to analyze the stability problem of traveling solitons.

Imaging Antiferromagnetic Domains in Nickel-oxide Thin Films by Magneto-optical Voigt Effect

Recent demonstrations of electrical detection and manipulation of antiferromagnets (AFMs) have opened new opportunities towards robust and ultrafast spintronics devices. However, it is difficult to establish the connection between the spin-transport behavior and the microscopic AFM domain states due to the lack of the real-time AFM domain imaging technique under the electric field. Here we report a significant Voigt rotation up to 60 mdeg in thin NiO(001) films at room temperature. Such large Voigt rotation allows us to directly observe AFM domains in thin-film NiO by utilizing a wide-field optical microscope. Further complementary XMLD-PEEM measurement confirms that the Voigt contrast originates from the NiO AFM order. We examine the domain pattern evolution at a wide range of temperature and with the application of external magnetic field. Comparing to large-scale-facility techniques such as the X-ray photoemission electron microscopy, the use with a wide-field, tabletop optical imaging method enables straightforward access to domain configurations of single-layer AFMs.

Long-time dynamics of small solutions to the Manakov system with initial data in the weighted $L^{2}$ space

In this paper, we compute the long-time asymptotics for small solutions of the Manakov system which is a coupled system of nonlinear Schrödinger equations just under the assumption that the initial data lies in the weighted $L^{2}$ space. This will be our first step to understand the long-time asymptotics of higher order AKNS systems in low regularity spaces and analyze the interaction of modified scatterings. In the last section, we also discuss on the interaction of the linear and the modified scattering. Our techniques are relied on the idea of the space-time resonance.

Ferroelectricity with Asymmetric Hysteresis in Metallic LiOsO3 Ultrathin Films

Bulk LiOsO3 was experimentally identified as a "ferroelectric" metal where polar distortions coexist with metallicity [Shi et al., Nature Materials 12, 1024 (2013)]. It is generally believed that polar displacements in a "ferroelectric" metal cannot be switched by an external electric field. Here, via comprehensive density functional theory calculations, we demonstrate that a two-unit-cell-thick LiOsO3 thin film exhibits a ferroelectric ground state having an out-of-plane electric dipole moment that can be switched by an external electric field. Moreover, its dipole moment-versus-electric-field hysteresis loop is asymmetric because only surface Li ions'displacements are reversed by external electric field whereas the field-induced force on inner Li atoms are nearly fully screened by itinerant electrons. As a relevant by-product of our study, we also extend the concept of "Born effective charge" to finite metallic systems, and show its usefulness to rationalize the observed effects.

Lyapunov-type characterisation of exponential dichotomies with applications to the heat and Klein-Gordon equations

We give a sufficient condition for existence of an exponential dichotomy for a general linear dynamical system (not necessarily invertible) in a Banach space, in discrete or continuous time. We provide applications to the backward heat equation with a potential varying in time and to the heat equation with a finite number of slowly moving potentials. We also consider the Klein-Gordon equation with a finite number of potentials whose centres move at sub-light speed with small accelerations.

Strichartz Estimates for Wave equations with Charge Transfer Hamiltonian

We prove Strichartz estimates (both regular and reversed) for a scattering state to the wave equation with a charge transfer Hamiltonian in $\mathbb{R}^{3}$: \[ \partial_{tt}u-Δu+\sum_{j=1}^{m}V_{j}\left(x-\vec{v}_{j}t\right)u=0. \] The energy estimate and the local energy decay of a scattering state are also established. In order to study nonlinear multisoltion systems, we will present the inhomogeneous generalizations of Strichartz estimates. As an application of our results, we show that scattering states indeed scatter to solutions to the free wave equation.

Work Function Characterization of the Directionally Solidified LaB6 VB2 Eutectic

With its low work function and high mechanical strength, the LaB6/VB2 eutectic system is an interesting candidate for high performance thermionic emitters. For the development of device applications, it is important to understand the origin, value, and spatial distribution of the work function in this system. Here we combine thermal emission electron microscopy and low energy electron microscopy with Auger electron spectroscopy and physical vapour deposition of the constituent elements to explore physical and chemical conditions governing the work function of these surfaces. Our results include the observation that work function is lower (and emission intensity is higher) on VB2 inclusions than on the LaB6 matrix. We also observe that the deposition of atomic monolayer doses of vanadium results in surprisingly significant lowering of the work function with values as low as 1.1 eV.

Stabilization and current-induced motion of antiskyrmion in the presence of anisotropic Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction

Topological defects in magnetism have attracted great attention due to fundamental research interests and potential novel spintronics applications. Rich examples of topological defects can be found in nanoscale non-uniform spin textures, such as monopoles, domain walls, vortices, and skyrmions. Recently, skyrmions stabilized by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction have been studied extensively. However, the stabilization of antiskyrmions is less straightforward. Here, using numerical simulations we demonstrate that antiskyrmions can be a stable spin configuration in the presence of anisotropic Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. We find current-driven antiskyrmion motion that has a transverse component, namely antiskyrmion Hall effect. The antiskyrmion gyroconstant is opposite to that for skyrmion, which allows the current-driven propagation of coupled skyrmion-antiskyrmion pairs without apparent skyrmion Hall effect. The antiskyrmion Hall angle strongly depends on the current direction, and a zero antiskyrmion Hall angle can be achieved at a critic current direction. These results open up possibilities to tailor the spin topology in nanoscale magnetism, which may be useful in the emerging field of skyrmionics.

A Simple Two-stage Equalizer With Simplified Orthogonal Time Frequency Space Modulation Over Rapidly Time-varying Channels

In this work, we derive a equivalent delay-Doppler channel matrix of the Orthogonal Time Frequency Space (OTFS) modulation that has not been studied in previous literature. It has the similar structure as the banded channel matrix of OFDM systems over rapidly time-varying channels. However, the band in the equivalent channel matrix will no longer spread with the increase of the Doppler spread once the length of maximum channel delay spread and the OTFS frame duration are deter- mined. Furthermore, the equivalent channel matrix can simplify the OTFS modulation in the transmitter side. Incorporating the equivalent channel matrix, we propose a simple two-stage equal- izer in 1 dimensional operations for OTFS modulation. First, the receive signal is equalized using the conventional OFDM single- tap equalizer in the frequency domain. The multipath effects can be removed. In the second stage, another low complexity delay- Doppler domain equalizer is employed to eliminate the effects of the residual interference caused by the Doppler spread with the equivalent channel matrix. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method is superior to the conventional single- tap equalizer and full minimum mean squared error (MMSE) equalizer of OFDM systems in terms of BER in high Doppler spread scenarios.

Skyrmions in Magnetic Multilayers

Symmetry breaking together with strong spin-orbit interaction give rise to many exciting phenomena within condensed matter physics. A recent example is the existence of chiral spin textures, which are observed in magnetic systems lacking inversion symmetry. These chiral spin textures, including domain walls and magnetic skyrmions, are both fundamentally interesting and technologically promising. For example, they can be driven very efficiently by electrical currents, and exhibit many new physical properties determined by their real-space topological characteristics. Depending on the details of the competing interactions, these spin textures exist in different parameter spaces. However, the governing mechanism underlying their physical behaviors remain essentially the same. In this review article, the fundamental topological physics underlying these chiral spin textures, the key factors for materials optimization, and current developments and future challenges will be discussed. In the end, a few promising directions that will advance the development of skyrmion based spintronics will be highlighted.
