Trace class Toeplitz operators with singular symbols

We characterize the trace class membership of Toeplitz operators with distributional symbols acting on the Bergman space on the unit disk. The Berezin transform of distributions, introduced in the paper, yields a formula for the trace. Several instructive examples are also given.

Eigenvalues of the Neumann-Poincare operator in dimension 3: Weyl's law and geometry

We consider the asymptotic properties of the eigenvalues of the Neumann-Poincare (NP) operator in three dimensions. The region $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^3$ is bounded by a compact surface $Γ=\partial Ω$, with certain smoothness conditions imposed. The NP operator is defined by $ \mathcal{K}_Γ[ψ](\mathbf{x}):=\frac{1}{4π}\int_Γ\frac{\langle \mathbf{y}-\mathbf{x},\mathbf{n}(\mathbf{y})\rangle}{|\mathbf{x}-\mathbf{y}|^3}ψ(\mathbf{y})dS_{\mathbf{y}},$ where $dS_{\mathbf{y}}$ is the surface element and $\mathbf{n}(\mathbf{y})$ is the outer unit normal vector on $Γ$. The first-named author established earlier that the singular numbers $s_j(\mathcal{K}_Γ)$ of $\mathcal{K}_Γ$ and the ordered moduli of its eigenvalues $λ_j(\mathcal{K}_Γ)$ satisfy the Weyl law with coefficient expressed in geometric terms. Our main purpose here is to investigate the asymptotic behavior of positive and negative eigenvalues separately under the condition of infinite smoothness of the boundary $Γ$. These formulas are used, in particular, to obtain certain answers to the long-standing problem of the existence or finiteness of negative eigenvalues of $\mathcal{K}_Γ$.

$\mathcal{L}$-invariant Fock-Carleson type measures for derivatives of order $k$ and the corresponding Toeplitz operators

Our purpose is to characterize the so-called horizontal Fock-Carleson type measures for derivatives of order $k$ (we write it $k$-hFC for short) for the Fock space as well as the Toeplitz operators generated by sesquilinear forms given by them. The boundedness conditions for such operators are found. We introduce real coderivatives of $k$-hFC type measures and show that the C*-algebra generated by Toeplitz operators with the corresponding class of symbols is commutative and isometrically isomorphic to certain $C^*$-subalgebra of $L_{\infty}(\mathbb{R}^{n})$. The above results are extended to measures that are invariant under translations along Lagrangian planes.

Toeplitz operators with singular symbols in polyanalytic Bergman spaces on the half-plane

Using the approach based on sesquilinear forms, we introduce Toeplitz operator in the analytic Bergman space on the upper half-plane with strongly singular symbols, derivatives of measures. Conditions for boundedness and compactness of such operators are found. A procedure of reduction of Toeplitz operators in Bergman spaces of polyanalytic functions to operators with singular symbols in the analytic Bergman space by means of the creation-annihilation structure is elaborated, which leads to the description of the properties of the former operators

Spectral properties of the Neumann-Poincaré operator in 3D elasticity

We consider the double layer potential (Neumann-Poincaré) operator appearing in 3-dimensional elasticity. We show that the recent result about the polynomial compactness of this operator for the case of a homogeneous media follows without additional calculations from previous considerations by Agranovich et.al., based upon pseudodifferential operators. Further on, we define the NP operator for the case of a nonhomogeneous isotropic media and show that its properties depend crucially on the character of non-homogeneity. If the Lamé parameters are constant along the boundary, the NP operator is still polynomially compact. On the other hand, if these parameters are not constant, two or more intervals of continuous spectrum may appear, so the NP operator ceases to be polynomially compact. However, after a certain modification, it becomes polynomially compact again. Finally, we evaluate the rate of convergence of discrete eigenvalues of the NP operator to the tips of the essential spectrum.

Toeplitz operators in polyanalytic Bergman type spaces

We consider Toeplitz operators in Bergman and Fock type spaces of polyanalytic $L^2\textup{-}$functions on the disk or on the half-plane with respect to the Lebesgue measure (resp., on $\mathbb{C}$ with the plane Gaussian measure). The structure involving creation and annihilation operators, similar to the classical one present for the Landau Hamiltonian, enables us to reduce Toeplitz operators in true polyanalytic spaces to the ones in the usual Bergman type spaces, however with distributional symbols. This reduction leads to describing a number of properties of the operators in the title, which may differ from the properties of the usual Bergman-Toeplitz operators.

Toeplitz operators in the Herglotz space

We define and study Toeplitz operators in the space of Herglotz solutions of the Helmholtz equation in $R^d$. As the most traditional definition of Toeplitz operators via Bergman-type projection is not available here, we use an approach based upon the reproducing kernel nature of the Herglotz space and sesquilinear forms, which results in a meaningful theory. For two important patterns of sesquilinear forms we discuss a number of properties, including the uniqueness of determining the symbols from the operator, the finite rank property, the conditions for boundedness and compactness, spectral properties, certain algebraic relations.

Toeplitz operators defined by sesquilinear forms: Bergman space case

The definition of Toeplitz operators in the Bergman space $A^2(D)$ of square integrable analytic functions in the unit disk in the complex plane is extended in such way that it covers many cases where the traditional definition does not work. This includes, in particular, highly singular symbols such as measures, distributions, and certain hyper-functions.

Isoperimetric inequalities for Schatten norms of Riesz potentials

In this note we prove that the ball is a maximiser of some Schatten $p$-norms of the Riesz potential operators among all domains of a given measure in $\mathbb R^{d}$. In particular, the result is valid for the polyharmonic Newton potential operator, which is related to a nonlocal boundary value problem for the poly-Laplacian extending the one considered by M. Kac in the case of the Laplacian, so we obtain and isoperimetric inequalities for its eigenvalues as well, namely, analogues of Rayleigh-Faber-Krahn and Hong-Krahn-Szegö inequalities.

Toeplitz operators defined by sesquilinear forms: Fock space case

The classical theory of Toeplitz operators in spaces of analytic functions deals usually with symbols that are bounded measurable functions on the domain in question. A further extension of the theory was made for symbols being unbounded functions, measures, and compactly supported distributions, all of them subject to some restrictions. In the context of a reproducing kernel Hilbert space we propose a certain framework for a `maximally possible' extension of the notion of Toeplitz operators for a `maximally wide' class of `highly singular' symbols. Using the language of sesquilinear forms we describe a certain common pattern for a variety of analytically defined forms which, besides covering all previously considered cases, permits us to introduce a further substantial extension of a class of admissible symbols that generate bounded Toeplitz operators. Although our approach is unified for all reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces, for concrete operator consideration in this paper we restrict ourselves to Toeplitz operators acting on the standard Fock (or Segal-Bargmann) space.

Some weighted estimates for the dbar- equation and a finite rank theorem for Toeplitz operators in the Fock space

We consider the $\dbar-$ equation in $\C^1$ in classes of functions with Gaussian decay at infinity. We prove that if the right-hand side of the equation is majorated by $\exp(-q|z|^2)$, with some positive $q$, together with derivatives up to some order, and is orthogonal, as a distribution, to all analytical polynomials, then there exists a solution with decays, together with derivatives, as $\exp(-q'|z|^2)$, for any $q'<q/e$. This result carries over to the $\dbar$-equation in classes of distributions, again, with Gaussian decay at infinity, in some precisely defined sense. The properties of the solution are used further on to prove the finite rank theorem for Toeplitz operators with distributional symbols in the Fock space: the symbol of such operator must be a combination of finitely many $δ$-distributions and their derivatives. The latter result generalizes the recent theorem on finite rank Toeplitz operators with symbols-functions.

The finite rank theorem for Toeplitz operators in the Fock space

We consider Toeplitz operators in the Fock space, under rather general conditions imposed on the symbols. It is proved that if the operator has finite rank and the symbol is a function then the operator and the symbol should be zero. The method of proving is different from the one used previously for finite rank theorems, and it enables one to get rid of the compact support condition for symbols imposed previously.

On spectral estimates for the Schrödinger operators in global dimension 2

The problem of finding eigenvalue estimates for the Schrödinger operator turns out to be most complicated for the dimension 2. Some important results for this case have been obtained recently. We discuss these results and establish their counterparts for the operators on the combinatorial and metric graphs corresponding to the lattice Z^2.

Finite Rank Bargmann-Toeplitz Operators with Non-Compactly Supported Symbols

Theorems about characterization of finite rank Toeplitz operators in Fock-Segal-Bargmann spaces, known previously only for symbols with compact support, are carried over to symbols without that restriction, however with a rather rapid decay at infinity. The proof is based upon a new version of the Stone-Weierstrass approximation theorem.

Spectral estimates for the Schrödinger operators with sparse potentials on graphs

The construction of "sparse potentials", suggested in \cite{RS09} for the lattice $\Z^d,\ d>2$, is extended to a wide class of combinatorial and metric graphs whose global dimension is a number $D>2$. For the Schrödinger operator $-\D-\a V$ on such graphs, with a sparse potential $V$, we study the behavior (as $\a\to\infty$) of the number $N_-(-\D-\a V)$ of negative eigenvalues of $-\D-\a V$. We show that by means of sparse potentials one can realize any prescribed asymptotic behavior of $N_-(-\D-\a V)$ under very mild regularity assumptions. A similar construction works also for the lattice $\Z^2$, where D=2.

On lower eigenvalue estimates for Toeplitz operators with radial symbols in Bergman spaces

We consider Toeplitz operators in different Bergman type spaces, having radial symbols with variable sign. We show that if the symbol has compact support or decays rapidly, the eigenvalues of such operators cannot decay too fast, essentially faster than for a sign-definite symbol with the same kind. On the other hand, if the symbol decays not sufficiently rapidly, the eigenvalues of the corresponding operator may decay faster than for the operator corresponding to the absolute value of the symbol.

On the spectral estimates for Schrödinger type operators. The case of small local dimension

The behavior of the discrete spectrum of the Schrödinger operator $-\D - V$, in quite a general setting, up to a large extent is determined by the behavior of the corresponding heat kernel $P(t;x,y)$ as $t\to 0$ and $t\to\infty$. If this behavior is powerlike, i.e., \[\|P(t;\cdot,\cdot)\|_{L^\infty}=O(t^{-δ/2}),\ t\to 0;\qquad \|P(t;\cdot,\cdot)\|_{L^\infty}=O(t^{-D/2}),\ t\to\infty,\] then it is natural to call the exponents $δ,D$ "{\it the local dimension}" and "{\it the dimension at infinity}" respectively. The character of spectral estimates depends on the relation between these dimensions. In the paper we analyze the case where $δ<D$ that was insufficiently studied before. Our applications concern the combinatorial and the metric graphs.

On the spectrum of Bargmann-Toeplitz operators with symbols of a variable sign

The paper discusses the spectrum of Toeplitz operators in Bargmann spaces. Our Toeplitz operators have real symbols with a variable sign and a compact support. A class of examples is considered where the asymptotics of the eigenvalues of such operators can be computed. These examples show that this asymptotics depends on the geometry of the supports of the positive and negative parts of the symbol. Applications to the perturbed Landau Hamiltonian are given.
