On-chip transverse-mode entangled photon pair source

Integrated entangled photon pair source is an essential resource for both fundamental investigations and practical applications of quantum information science. Currently there have been several types of entanglement, among which the transverse-mode entanglement is becoming attractive because of its unique advantages. Here, we report an on-chip transverse-mode entangled photon pair source via the spontaneous four-wave mixing processes in a multimode silicon waveguide. Transverse-mode photon pairs are verified over multiple frequency channels within a bandwidth of $\sim$2~THz, and a maximally entangled Bell state is also produced with a net fidelity of $0.96\pm0.01$. Our entangled photon pair source is the key element for quantum photonics based on transverse-mode, and also has the possibility to extend to higher-dimensional Hilbert space. Furthermore, the transverse-mode entanglement can be converted coherently to path and polarization entanglement, which paves the way to realizing highly complex quantum photonic circuits with multiple degrees of freedom.

Realization of the tradeoff between internal and external entanglement

We experimentally realize the internal and external entanglement tradeoff, which is a new kind of entanglement monogamy relation different from that usually discussed. Using a source of twin photons, we find that the external entanglement in polarization of twin photons, and the path-polarization internal entanglement of one photon, limit each other. In the extreme case, when the internal state is maximally entangled, the external entanglement must be vanishing, that illustrate entanglement monogamy. Our results of the experiment coincide with the theoretical predictions, and therefore provide a direct experimental observation of the internal and external entanglement monogamy relation.

An arbitrary two-particle high-dimensional Bell state measurement by auxiliary entanglement

Bell state measurement (BSM) plays a vital role in quantum information. There are many researches on BSM of qubit Bell state, however, there is no definite solution of how to realize high-dimensional Bell state measurement (HDBSM). In this paper, We present a scheme for realizing arbitrary high-dimensional two-particle Bell state measurement by auxiliary entanglement. In our scheme, the maximal entangled states with different degrees of freedom (DOF) are used as auxiliary states, and then the HDBSM can be achieved by implementing Bell measurement with different degrees of freedom. We present the detailed HDBSM scheme for three and four-dimensional Bell state, and the general formula for arbitrary high-dimensional Bell state. Furthermore, We have designed the experimental scheme for three-dimensional BSM, and given the method of arbitrary dimension. This method can promote the high-dimensional quantum information task.

Experimental investigation of majorization uncertainty relations in the high-dimensional systems

Uncertainty relation is not only of fundamental importance to quantum mechanics, but also crucial to the quantum information technology. Recently, majorization formulation of uncertainty relations (MURs) have been widely studied, ranging from two measurements to multiple measurements. Here, for the first time, we experimentally investigate MURs for two measurements and multiple measurements in the high-dimensional systems, and study the intrinsic distinction between direct-product MURs and direct-sum MURs. The experimental results reveal that by taking different nonnegative Schur-concave functions as uncertainty measure, the two types of MURs have their own particular advantages, and also verify that there exists certain case where three-measurement majorization uncertainty relation is much stronger than the one obtained by summing pairwise two-measurement uncertainty relations. Our work not only fills the gap of experimental studies of majorization uncertainty relations, but also represents an advance in quantitatively understanding and experimental verification of majorization uncertainty relations which are universal and capture the essence of uncertainty in quantum theory.

Infrared Laser Locking to Rubidium Saturated Absorption Spectrum via a Photonic Chip Frequency Doubler

Photonic integrated resonators stand out as reliable frequency converters due to their compactness and stability, with second-harmonic generation (SHG) efficiencies of up to 17000%/W reported recently in aluminum nitride microrings. In this work, a sufficiently strong second-harmonic (SH) signal up to microwatts was generated by a photonic integrated frequency doubler using a milliwatt infrared (IR) laser source. Furthermore, increased SHG bandwidth covering $^{85}$Rb and $^{87}$Rb D$_2$ transition lines as well as saturated absorption spectroscopy (SAS) were demonstrated by tuning the pump power and chip temperature. Here, we present, to the best of our knowledge, the first successful locking of an IR laser to Rb saturated absorption lines via a photonic chip frequency doubler.

Parameters optimization and real-time calibration of Measurement-Device-Independent Quantum Key Distribution Network based on Back Propagation Artificial Neural Network

The parameters choosing (such as probabilities of choosing X-basis or Z-basis, intensity of signal state and decoy state, etc.) and system calibrating will be more challenging when the number of users of a measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution(MDI-QKD) network becomes larger. At present, people usually use optimization algorithms to search the best parameters. This method can find the optimized parameters accurately but may cost lots of time and hardware resources. It's a big problem in large scale MDI-QKD network. Here, we present a new method, using Back Propagation Artificial Neural Network(BPNN) to predict, rather than searching the optimized parameters. Compared with optimization algorithms, our BPNN is faster and more lightweight, it can save system resources. Another big problem brought by large scale MDI-QKD network is system recalibration. BPNN can support this work in real time, and it only needs to use some discarded data generated from communication process, rather than require us to add additional devices or scan the system

Coherent manipulation of a three-dimensional maximally entangled state

Maximally entangled photon pairs with a spatial degree of freedom is a potential way for realizing high-capacity quantum computing and communication. However, methods to generate such entangled states with high quality, high brightness, and good controllability are needed. Here, a scheme is experimentally demonstrated that generates spatially maximally entangled photon pairs with an orbital angular momentum degree of freedom via spontaneous parametric down-conversion in a nonlinear crystal. Compared with existing methods using post-selection, the technique can directly modulate the spatial spectrum of down-converted photon pairs by engineering the input pump beam. In addition, the relative phase between spatially entangled photon pairs can be easily manipulated by preparing the relative phase of input pump states.

Efficient Machine Learning Representations of Surface Code with Boundaries, Defects, Domain Walls and Twists

Machine learning representations of many-body quantum states have recently been introduced as an ansatz to describe the ground states and unitary evolutions of many-body quantum systems. We explore one of the most important representations, restricted Boltzmann machine (RBM) representation, in stabilizer formalism. We give the general method of constructing RBM representation for stabilizer code states and find the exact RBM representation for several types of stabilizer groups with the number of hidden neurons equal or less than the number of visible neurons, which indicates that the representation is extremely efficient. Then we analyze the surface code with boundaries, defects, domain walls and twists in full detail and find that all the models can be efficiently represented via RBM ansatz states. Besides, the case for Kitaev's $D(\Zb_d)$ model, which is a generalized model of surface code, is also investigated.

Entanglement detection by violations of noisy uncertainty relations: A proof of principle

It is well-known that the violation of a local uncertainty relation can be used as an indicator for the presence of entanglement. Unfortunately, the practical use of these non-linear witnesses has been limited to few special cases in the past. However, new methods for computing uncertainty bounds became available. Here we report on an experimental implementation of uncertainty-based entanglement witnesses, benchmarked in a regime dominated by strong local noise. We combine the new computational method with a local noise tomography in order to design noise-adapted entanglement witnesses. This proof-of-principle experiment shows that quantum noise can be successfully handled by a fully quantum model in order to enhance entanglement detection efficiencies.

Experimental Verification of Anisotropic Invariance for Three-Qubit States

We experimentally test the recently predicted anisotropic invariance properties of pure three-qubit states, via generation and measurement of polarisation-path entangled three-qubit states. These properties do not require aligned reference frames and can be determined from measurements on any two of the qubits. They have several applications, such as a universal ordering of pairwise quantum correlations, strong monogamy relations for Bell inequalities and quantum steering, and a complementarity relation for Bell nonlocality versus 3-tangle, some of which we also test. The results indicate that anisotropic invariance, together with the three qubit Bloch vector lengths, can provide a robust and complete set of invariants for such states under local unitary transformations.

High contrast quantum imaging with time-gated fluorescence detection

Optical detection of spin state has been widely used for the solid state spin qubit in the application of quantum information processing. The signal contrast determines the accuracy of quantum state manipulation, sensitivity of quantum sensing and resolution of quantum imaging. Here, we demonstrated a time-gated fluorescence detection method for enhancing the spin state signal contrast of nitrogen vacancy (NV) center in diamond. By adjusting the delay between time gate and the excitation laser pulse, we improved both the signal contrast and signal-to-noise ratio for NV spin detection. An enhancement ratio of 1.86 times was reached for the signal contrast. Utilizing the time-gated fluorescence detection, we further demonstrated a high contrast quantum imaging of nanoparticle's stray magnetic field. Without any additional manipulation of the quantum state, we expect that this method can be used to improve the performance of various applications with NV center.

Geometric Steering Criterion for Two-qubit States

According to the geometric characterization of measurement assemblages and local hidden state (LHS) models, we propose a steering criterion which is both necessary and sufficient for two-qubit states under arbitrary measurement sets. A quantity is introduced to describe the required local resources to reconstruct a measurement assemblage for two-qubit states. We show that the quantity can be regarded as a quantification of steerability and be used to find out optimal LHS models. Finally we propose a method to generate unsteerable states, and construct some two-qubit states which are entangled but unsteerable under all projective measurements.

Geometric Local Hidden State Model for Some Two-qubit States

Adopting the geometric description of steering assemblages and local hidden states (LHS) model, we construct the optimal LHS model for some two-qubit states under continuous projective measurements, and obtain a sufficient steering criterion for all two-qubit states. Using the criterion, we show more two-qubit states that are asymmetric in steering scenario under projective measurements. Then we generalize the geometric description into higher dimensional bipartite cases, calculate the steering bound of two-qutrit isotropic states and make discussion on more general cases.

Observation of Nonlocality Sharing among Three Observers with One Entangled Pair via Optimal Weak Measurement

Bell nonlocality plays a fundamental role in quantum theory. Numerous tests of the Bell inequality have been reported since the ground-breaking discovery of the Bell theorem.Up to now, however, most discussions of the Bell scenario have focused on a single pair of entangled particles distributed to only two separated observers. Recently, it has been shown surprisingly that multiple observers can share the nonlocality present in a single particle from an entangled pair using the method of weak measurements [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 114}, 250401 (2015)]. Here we report an observation of double CHSH-Bell inequality violations for a single pair of entangled photons with strength continuous-tunable optimal weak measurements in photonic system for the first time. Our results not only shed new light on the interplay between nonlocality and quantum measurements but may also be significant for important applications such as unbounded randomness certification and quantum steering.

Direct Measurement of the Two-dimensional Spatial Quantum Wavefunction via Strong Measurements

Wavefunction is the foundation of quantum theory, which is assumed to give a complete description of a quantum system. For a long time, wavefunction is introduced as an abstract element of the theory and there lacks effective ways to measure it directly. The situation, however, is somewhat changed when Lundeen et al. reported the direct measurement of the quantum wavefunction via weak measurements, which gives the wavefunction a clearly operational definition [Nature 474, 188 (2011)]. The weak measurement method requires sequential measurements of conjugate observables position and momentum with the position measurement is weak enough. Surprisingly, the recent research by Vallone and Dequal shows that performing sequential strong measurements realizes the same target, in which case no approximation has to be made compared to the case of weak measurements[Phys. Rev. Lett. 116, 040502 (2016)]. Here we experimentally report the direct measurement of the two-dimensional transverse wavefunction of photons via strong measurements for the first time, which implies that an accurate and clear operational definition can be given to wavefunction. We have measured the Gaussian and Laguerre-Gaussian of l = 1 spatial wavefunctions of photons with R-square are 0.97 and 0.93 respectively. As a potentially important application, we show that the direct measurement of two-dimensional wavefunction provides an alternative way to realize digital holography of three-dimensional objects. The results presented here will not only deepen our understanding of abstract wavefunction but also have significant applications in quantum information processing and quantum imaging.

Room-temperature Composite-pulses for Robust Diamond Magnetometry

The sensitivity of a practical quantum magnetometer is challenged by both inhomogeneous coupling between sensors and environment and errors in quantum control. Based on the physical criteria of modern quantum sensing, we present a robust and effective composite-pulse for high fidelity operation against inhomogeneous broadening of sensor and control errors via optimized modulation of control field. Such a technique is verified on nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in diamond to keep almost perfect operation up to a detuning as larger as $110\%$. The sensitivity of the magnetometer with NV center ensemble is experimentally improved by a factor of $4$, comparing to dynamical decoupling with normal rectangular pulse. Our work marks an important step towards high trustworthy ultra-sensitive quantum sensing with imperfect quantum control in realistic systems. The used principle however, is universal and not restricted to NV center ensemble magnetometer.

On-demand generation of shallow silicon vacancy in silicon carbide

Defects in silicon carbide have been explored as promising spin systems in quantum technologies. However, for practical quantum metrology and quantum communication, it is critical to achieve the on-demand shallow spin-defect generation. In this work, we present the generation and characterization of shallow silicon vacancies in silicon carbide by using different implanted ions and annealing conditions. The conversion efficiency of silicon vacancy of helium ions is shown to be higher than that by carbon and hydrogen ions in a wide implanted fluence range. Furthermore, after optimizing annealing conditions, the conversion efficiency can be increased more than 2 times. Due to the high density of the generated ensemble defects, the sensitivity to sense a static magnetic field can be research as high as , which is about 15 times higher than previous results. By carefully optimizing implanted conditions, we further show that a single silicon vacancy array can be generated with about 80 % conversion efficiency, which reaches the highest conversion yield in solid state systems. The results pave the way for using on-demand generated shallow silicon vacancy for quantum information processing and quantum photonics.

Fast and High-Fidelity Readout of Single Trapped-Ion Qubit via Machine Learning Methods

In this work, we introduce machine learning methods to implement readout of a single qubit on $^{171}\mathrm{Yb^{+}}$ trapped-ion system. Different machine learning methods including convolutional neural networks and fully-connected neural networks are compared with traditional methods in the tests. The results show that machine learning methods have higher fidelity, more robust readout results in relatively short time. To obtain a 99% readout fidelity, neural networks only take half of the detection time needed by traditional threshold or maximum likelihood methods. Furthermore, we implement the machine learning algorithms on hardware-based field-programmable gate arrays and an ARM processor. An average readout fidelity of 99.5% (with $10^5$ magnitude trials) within 171 $μ$s is demonstrated on the embedded hardware system for $^{171}\mathrm{Yb^{+}}$ ion trap.
