Nonlinear frequency conversion and manipulation of vector beams in a Sagnac loop

Vector beams (VBs) are widely investigated for its special intensity and polarization distributions, which is useful for optical micromanipulation, optical micro-fabrication, optical communication, and single molecule imaging. To date, it is still a challenge to realize nonlinear frequency conversion (NFC) and manipulation of such VBs because of the polarization sensitivity in most of nonlinear processes. Here, we report an experimental realization of NFC and manipulation of VBs which can be used to expand the available frequency band. The main idea of our scheme is to introduce a Sagnac loop to solve the polarization dependence of NFC in nonlinear crystals. Furthermore, we find that a linearly polarized vector beam should be transformed to an exponential form before performing the NFC. The experimental results are well agree with our theoretical model. The present method is also applicable to other wave bands and second order nonlinear processes, and may also be generalized to the quantum regime for single photons.

Coherent control of defect spins in silicon carbide above 550 K

Great efforts have been made to the investigation of defects in silicon carbide for their attractive optical and spin properties. However, most of the researches are implemented at low and room temperature. Little is known about the spin coherent property at high temperature. Here, we experimentally demonstrate coherent control of divacancy defect spins in silicon carbide above 550 K. The spin properties of defects ranging from room temperature to 600 K are investigated, in which the zero-field-splitting is found to have a polynomial temperature dependence and the spin coherence time decreases as the temperature increases. Moreover, as an example of application, we demonstrate a thermal sensing using the Ramsey method at about 450 K. Our experimental results would be useful for the investigation of high temperature properties of defect spins and silicon carbide-based broad-temperature range quantum sensing.

Topological charge independent frequency conversion of twisted light

Light with orbital angular momentum (OAM), or twisted light, is widely investigated in the fields of optical communications, quantum information science and nonlinear optics by harnessing its unbounded dimension. For light-matter interacting with twisted light like quantum memory and nonlinear frequency conversion, efficiencies in these processes are usually decreasing exponentially with topological charges, which severely degrades the fidelity of the output states. Here we conceive and develop a method to eliminate the dependence of conversion efficiency on topological charges in second harmonic generation (SHG) process by utilizing a special designed image technique. The independence of SHG conversion efficiency on topological charge is verified for different topological charges, this independence is valid for various pump power. This method can be generalized to other light matter interaction processes and will revolute the field of light matter interaction with twisted light to achieve higher efficiency and higher fidelity.

Up-conversion imaging processing with field-of-view and edge enhancement

Spiral phase contrast is an important and convenient imaging processing technology in edge detection, and a broader field-of-view (FOV) of imaging is a long-pursuing aim to see more regions of the illumination objects. Compared with near-infrared (NIR) spectrum, the up-conversion imaging in visible spectrum benefits from the advantages of higher efficiency detection and lower potential speckle. FOV enhanced and spiral phase contrast up-conversion imaging processing methods by using second order nonlinear frequency up-conversion from NIR spectrum to visible spectrum in two different configurations are presented in this work. By changing the temperature of crystal, controllable spatial patterns of imaging with more than 4.5 times enhancement of FOV is realized in both configurations. Additionally, we present numerical simulations of the phenomenon, which agree well with the experimental observations. Our results provide a very promising way in imaging processing, which may be widely used in biomedicine, remote sensing and up-conversion monitoring.

Validation of Quantum Adiabaticity through Non-Inertial Frames and Its Trapped-Ion Realization

Validity conditions for the adiabatic approximation are useful tools to understand and predict the quantum dynamics. Remarkably, the resonance phenomenon in oscillating quantum systems has challenged the adiabatic theorem. In this scenario, inconsistencies in the application of quantitative adiabatic conditions have led to a sequence of new approaches for adiabaticity. Here, by adopting a different strategy, we introduce a validation mechanism for the adiabatic approximation by driving the quantum system to a non-inertial reference frame. More specifically, we begin by considering several relevant adiabatic approximation conditions previously derived and show that all of them fail by introducing a suitable oscillating Hamiltonian for a single quantum bit (qubit). Then, by evaluating the adiabatic condition in a rotated non-inertial frame, we show that all of these conditions, including the standard adiabatic condition, can correctly describe the adiabatic dynamics in the original frame, either far from resonance or at a resonant point. Moreover, we prove that this validation mechanism can be extended for general multi-particle quantum systems, establishing the conditions for the equivalence of the adiabatic behavior as described in inertial or non-inertial frames. In order to experimentally investigate our method, we consider a hyperfine qubit through a single trapped Ytterbium ion $^{171}$Yb$^{+}$, where the ion hyperfine energy levels are used as degrees of freedom of a two-level system. By monitoring the quantum evolution, we explicitly show the consistency of the adiabatic conditions in the non-inertial frame.

Three-Leaf Dart-Shaped Single-Crystal BN Formation Promoted by Surface Oxygen

Two-dimensional hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) single crystals with various shapes have been synthesized by chemical vapor deposition over the past several years. Here we report the formation of three-leaf dart (3LD)-shaped single crystals of h-BN on Cu foil by atmospheric-pressure chemical vapor deposition. The leaves of the 3LD-shaped h-BN are as long as 18 μm and their edges are smooth armchair on one side and stepped armchair on the other. Careful analysis revealed that surface oxygen plays an important role in the formation of the 3LD shape. Oxygen suppressed h-BN nucleation by passivating Cu surface active sites and lowered the edge attachment energy, which caused the growth kinetics to change to a diffusion-controlled mode.

Free-space continuous-variable quantum key distribution of unidimensional Gaussian modulation using polarized coherent-states in urban environment

We use single homodyne detector to accomplish Continuous-Variable quantum key distribution(CV QKD) in a laboratory and urban environment free-space channel. This is based on Gaussian modulation with coherent-states in the polarization degree of freedom. We achieved a QKD distance at 460m, at the repetition rate of 10 kHz. We give the security of this protocol against collective attack in the asymptotic regime. The secure key rate is 0.152 kbps at the typical reconciliation efficiency of 0.95. The experiment setup of this scheme is simplified and the difficulty to realize has been remarkably reduced compared to traditional symmetric modulation ones, for example, GG02 protocol. The influence of security key rate brought by asymmetric modulation is small in a relative low channel loss condition in the free-space environment. This scheme is expected to be significance meaning to the future practically utilize.

Solving frustrated quantum many-particle models with convolutional neural networks

Recently, there has been significant progress in solving quantum many-particle problem via machine learning based on the restricted Boltzmann machine. However, it is still highly challenging to solve frustrated models via machine learning, which has not been demonstrated so far. In this work, we design a brand new convolutional neural network (CNN) to solve such quantum many-particle problems. We demonstrate, for the first time, of solving the highly frustrated spin-1/2 J$_1$-J$_2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on square lattices via CNN. The energy per site achieved by the CNN is even better than previous string-bond-state calculations. Our work therefore opens up a new routine to solve challenging frustrated quantum many-particle problems using machine learning.

Deep Hybrid Scattering Image Learning

A well-trained deep neural network is shown to gain capability of simultaneously restoring two kinds of images, which are completely destroyed by two distinct scattering medias respectively. The network, based on the U-net architecture, can be trained by blended dataset of speckles-reference images pairs. We experimentally demonstrate the power of the network in reconstructing images which are strongly diffused by glass diffuser or multi-mode fiber. The learning model further shows good generalization ability to reconstruct images that are distinguished from the training dataset. Our work facilitates the study of optical transmission and expands machine learning's application in optics.

Repetition rate tuning of soliton in microrod resonators

The coherent temporal soliton in optical microresonators has attracted great attention recently. Here, we demonstrate the dissipative Kerr soliton generation in a microrod resonator, by utilizing an auxiliary-laser-assisted thermal response control. By external stress tuning, the repetition rate of the soliton has been controlled over a large range of 30 MHz. Our platform promises precise tuning and locking of the repetition frequency of coherent mode-locked comb in the microresonator, and holds great potential for applications in spectroscopy and precision measurements.

Quantum states preparation of an atomic ensemble via cavity-assisted homodyne measurement

The quantum spin states of atomic ensemble are of special interesting for both fundamental studies and precision measurement applications. Here, we propose a scheme to prepare collective quantum states of an atomic ensemble placed in an optical cavity via homodyne measurement of probing light field. The effective interactions of atoms mediated by photons are enhanced by the optical cavity, and the output probe light could also be entangled with the collective spin states. By selectively measuring the quadrature of output light, we can prepare various quantum states, including superposition states of Dicke states and Dicke squeezed states. It is also demonstrated that the fidelity of prepared quantum state can be enhanced by repetitive homodyne detection and using longer probe laser pulses. Our scheme is feasible for experimental realization with current technologies, which may be used in future study of quantum mechanics and quantum metrology.

General Hardy-Type Paradox Based on Bell inequality and its Experimental Test

Local realistic models cannot completely describe all predictions of quantum mechanics. This is known as Bell's theorem that can be revealed either by violations of Bell inequality, or all-versus-nothing proof of nonlocality. Hardy's paradox is an important all-versus-nothing proof and is considered as "the simplest form of Bell's theorem". In this work, we theoretically build the general framework of Hardy-type paradox based on Bell inequality. Previous Hardy's paradoxes have been found to be special cases within the framework. Stronger Hardy-type paradox has been found even for the two-qubit two-setting case, and the corresponding successful probability is about four times larger than the original one, thus providing a more friendly test for experiment. We also find that GHZ paradox can be viewed as a perfect Hardy-type paradox. Meanwhile, we experimentally test the stronger Hardy-type paradoxes in a two-qubit system. Within the experimental errors, the experimental results coincide with the theoretical predictions.

Anomalous isothermal compressibility in spin-orbit coupled degenerate Fermi gases

The spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in degenerate Fermi gases can fundamentally change the fate of $s$-wave superfluids with strong Zeeman field and give rise to topological superfluids and associated Majorana zero modes. It also dramatically changes the thermodynamic properties of the superfluids. Here we report the anomalous isothermal compressibility $κ_T$ in this superfluids with both SOC and Zeeman field. We formulate this quantity from the Gibbs-Duhem equation and show that the contribution of $κ_T$ comes from the explicit contribution of chemical potential and implicit contribution of order parameter. In the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) limit, this compressibility is determined by the density of state near the Fermi surface; while in the Bose Einstein condensate (BEC) regime it is determined by the scattering length. Between these two limits, we find that the anomalous peaks can only be found in the gapless Weyl phase regime. This anomalous behavior can be regarded as a remanent effect of phase separation. The similar physics can also be found in the lattice model away from half filling. These predictions can be measured from the anomalous response of sound velocity and fluctuation of carrier density.

Multiplexed storage and real-time manipulation based on a multiple-degree-of-freedom quantum memory

The faithful storage and coherent manipulation of quantum states with matter-systems enable the construction of large-scale quantum networks based on quantum repeater. To achieve useful communication rates, highly multimode quantum memories will be required to construct a multiplexed quantum repeater. Here, we present the first demonstration of the on-demand storage of orbital-angular-momentum states with weak coherent pulses at the single-photon-level in a rare-earth-ion doped crystal. Through the combination of this spatial degree-of-freedom with temporal and spectral degrees of freedom, we create a multiple-degree-of-freedom memory with high multimode capacity. This device can serve as a quantum mode converter with high fidelity, which is the fundamental requirements for the construction of a multiplexed quantum repeater. This device further enables essentially arbitrary spectral and temporal manipulations of spatial-qutrit-encoded photonic pulses in real-time. Therefore, the developed quantum memory can serve as a building block for scalable photonic quantum information processing architectures.

Field-induced topological pair-density wave states in a multilayer optical lattice

We study the superfluid phases of a Fermi gas in a multilayer optical lattice system in the presence of out-of-plane Zeeman field, as well as spin-orbit (SO) coupling. We show that the Zeeman field combined with the SO coupling leads to exotic topological pair-density wave (PDW) phases in which different layers possess different superfluid order parameters, even though each layer experiences the same Zeeman field and the SO coupling. We elucidate the mechanism of the emerging PDW phases, and characterize their topological properties by calculating the associated Chern numbers.

Experimental implementation of fully controlled dephasing dynamics and synthetic spectral densities

Engineering, controlling, and simulating quantum dynamics is a strenuous task. However, these techniques are crucial to develop quantum technologies, preserve quantum properties, and engineer decoherence. Earlier results have demonstrated reservoir engineering, construction of a quantum simulator for Markovian open systems, and controlled transition from Markovian to non-Markovian regime. Dephasing is an ubiquitous mechanism to degrade the performance of quantum computers. However, a fully controllable all-purpose quantum simulator for generic dephasing is still missing. Here we demonstrate full experimental control of dephasing allowing us to implement arbitrary decoherence dynamics of a qubit. As examples, we use a photon to simulate the dynamics of a qubit coupled to an Ising chain in a transverse field and also demonstrate a simulation of non-positive dynamical map. Our platform opens the possibility to simulate dephasing of any physical system and study fundamental questions on open quantum systems.

Measuring the winding number in a large-scale chiral quantum walk

We report the experimental measurement of the winding number in an unitary chiral quantum walk. Fundamentally, the spin-orbit coupling in discrete time quantum walks is implemented via birefringent crystal collinearly cut based on time-multiplexing scheme. Our protocol is compact and avoids extra loss, making it suitable for realizing genuine single-photon quantum walks at a large-scale. By adopting heralded single-photon as the walker and with a high time resolution technology in single-photon detection, we carry out a 50-step Hadamard discrete-time quantum walk with high fidelity up to 0.948$\pm$0.007. Particularly, we can reconstruct the complete wave-function of the walker that starts the walk in a single lattice site through local tomography of each site. Through a Fourier transform, the wave-function in quasi-momentum space can be obtained. With this ability, we propose and report a method to reconstruct the eigenvectors of the system Hamiltonian in quasi-momentum space and directly read out the winding numbers in different topological phases (trivial and non-trivial) in the presence of chiral symmetry. By introducing nonequivalent time-frames, we show that the whole topological phases in periodically driven system can also be characterized by two different winding numbers. Our method can also be extended to the high winding number situation.

Dynamic-Disorder-Induced Enhancement of Entanglement in Photonic Quantum Walks

Entanglement generation in discrete time quantum walks is deemed to be another key property beyond the transport behaviors. The latter has been widely used in investigating the localization or topology in quantum walks. However, there are few experiments involving the former for the challenges in full reconstruction of the final wave function. Here, we report an experiment demonstrating the enhancement of the entanglement in quantum walks using dynamic disorder. Through reconstructing the local spinor state for each site, von Neumann entropy can be obtained and used to quantify the coin-position entanglement. We find that the enhanced entanglement in the dynamically disordered quantum walks is independent of the initial state, which is different from the entanglement generation in the Hadamard quantum walks. Our results are inspirational for achieving quantum computing based on quantum walks.
