Measuring a Dynamical Topological Order Parameter in Quantum Walks

Quantum processes of inherent dynamical nature, such as quantum walks (QWs), defy a description in terms of an equilibrium statistical physics ensemble. Up to now, it has remained a key challenge to identify general principles behind the underlying unitary quantum dynamics. Here, we show and experimentally observe that split-step QWs admit a characterization in terms of a dynamical topological order parameter (DTOP). This integer-quantized DTOP measures, at a given time, the winding of the geometric phase accumulated by the wave-function during the QW. We observe distinct dynamical regimes in our experimentally realized QWs each of which can be attributed to a qualitatively different temporal behavior of the DTOP. Upon identifying an equivalent many-body problem, we reveal an intriguing connection between the nonanalytic changes of the DTOP in QWs and the occurrence of dynamical quantum phase transitions.

Achieving Heisenberg-scaling precision with projective measurement on single photons

It has been suggested that both quantum superpositions and nonlinear interactions are important resources for quantum metrology. However, to date the different roles that these two resources play in the precision enhancement are not well understood. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a Heisenberg-scaling metrology to measure the parameter governing the nonlinear coupling between two different optical modes. The intense mode with n (more than 10^6 in our work) photons manifests its effect through the nonlinear interaction strength which is proportional to its average photon-number. The superposition state of the weak mode, which contains only a single photon, is responsible for both the linear Hamiltonian and the scaling of the measurement precision. By properly preparing the initial state of single photon and making projective photon-counting measurement, the extracted classical Fisher information (FI) can saturate the quantum FI embedded in the combined state after coupling, which is ~ n^2 and leads to a practical precision ~ 1.2/n. Free from the utilization of entanglement, our work paves a way to realize Heisenberg-scaling precision when only a linear Hamiltonian is involved.

"Möbius" Microring Resonator

A new category of optical microring resonator, which is analogous to the Möbius strip, is proposed. The "Möbius" microring resonator allows the conversion between modes with different polarizations in the ring and light must circulate two cycles to be converted back to the original polarization status, which is similar to a Möbius strip. This topology structure of polarization leads to the free spectral range be half of that corresponds to the cavity round trip. The eigenmodes of this microring are hybridizations of different polarizations and the breaking of the rotation invariance of the ring makes the transmission be related with the polarization of input light. Our work opens the door towards the photonic devices with nontrivial mode topology and provides a novel way to engineering photonic structures for fundamental studies.

Beating the channel capacity limit for superdense coding with entangled ququarts

Quantum superdense coding protocols enhance channel capacity by using shared quantum entanglement between two users. The channel capacity can be as high as 2 when one uses entangled qubits. However, this limit can be surpassed by using high-dimensional entanglement. We report an experiment that exceeds the limit using high-quality entangled ququarts with fidelities up to 0.98, demonstrating a channel capacity of $2.09\pm0.01$. The measured channel capacity is also higher than that obtained when transmitting only one ququart. We use the setup to transmit a five-color image with a fidelity of 0.952. Our experiment shows the great advantage of high-dimensional entanglement and will stimulate research on high-dimensional quantum information processes.

Experimental Implementation of Generalized Transitionless Quantum Driving

It is known that high intensity fields are usually required to implement shortcuts to adiabaticity via Transitionless Quantum Driving (TQD). Here, we show that this requirement can be relaxed by exploiting the gauge freedom of generalized TQD, which is expressed in terms of an arbitrary phase when mimicking the adiabatic evolution. We experimentally investigate the performance of generalized TQD in comparison with both traditional TQD and adiabatic dynamics. By using a $^{171}$Yb$^+$ trapped ion hyperfine qubit, we implement a Landau-Zener adiabatic Hamiltonian and its (traditional and generalized) TQD counterparts. We show that the generalized theory provides optimally implementable Hamiltonians for TQD, with no additional fields required. In addition, the energetically optimal TQD Hamiltonian for the Landau-Zener model is investigated under dephasing. Remarkably, even using less intense fields, optimal TQD exhibits fidelities that are more robust against a decohering environment, with performance superior than that provided by the adiabatic dynamics.

Doubly-resonant-cavity electromagnetically induced transparency

We present an experimental study on the cavity-atom ensemble system, and realize the doubly-resonant cavity enhanced electromagnetically induced transparency, where both the probe and control lasers are resonant with a Fabry-Perot cavity. We demonstrate the precise frequency manipulating of the hybrid optical-atomic resonances, through either temperature or cavity length tuning. In such a system, the control power can be greatly enhanced due to the cavity, and all-optical switching is achieved with a much lower control laser power compared to previous studies. A new theoretical model is developed to describe the effective three-wave mixing process between spin-wave and optical modes. Interesting non-Hermitian physics are predicted theoretically and demonstrated experimentally. Such a doubly-resonant cavity-atom ensemble system without a specially designed cavity can be used for future applications, such as optical signal storage and microwave-to-optical frequency conversion.

Cavity-mediated oscillating and trapping dynamics in a two-component condensate

Cold atoms in cavity provides a new platform for exploring exotic many-body phases. Here we explore the dynamics of a two-component condensate coupled to a finesse cavity, in which the Raman coupling is mediated by pumping laser and cavity mode. In this model, the energy scale of cavity mode is several order of magnitude bigger than that in the condensate, thus the small fluctuations in the cavity field may have important consequence in the dynamics of condensate. Beyond the steady-state approximaton, we show the cavity can play two different roles to this dynamics. In the first case, it imprints a gauge potential to the dynamics of condensate, giving rise to zero and $π$ Josephson dynamics. Nevertheless, in the other case, it plays the role of non-reciprocial transportation between the two hyperfine states, in which the stability of the fixed points are tuned from elliptic to stable spiral for one of the trapped phase and unstable spiral for the other trapped phase, thus the oscillating dynamics will finally ceased. The transition between these dynamics can be controlled by the parameters of the cavity field and the driving field. Our results demonstrate an novel way to engineer the dynamics of condensate by tuning the stability of the fixed points.

64-Qubit Quantum Circuit Simulation

Classical simulations of quantum circuits are limited in both space and time when the qubit count is above 50, the realm where quantum supremacy reigns. However, recently, for the low depth circuit with more than 50 qubits, there are several methods of simulation proposed by teams at Google and IBM. Here, we present a scheme of simulation which can extract a large amount of measurement outcomes within a short time, achieving a 64-qubit simulation of a universal random circuit of depth 22 using a 128-node cluster, and 56- and 42-qubit circuits on a single PC. We also estimate that a 72-qubit circuit of depth 23 can be simulated in about 16 h on a supercomputer identical to that used by the IBM team. Moreover, the simulation processes are exceedingly separable, hence parallelizable, involving just a few inter-process communications. Our work enables simulating more qubits with less hardware burden and provides a new perspective for classical simulations.

Enhanced absorption microscopy with correlated photon pairs

By harnessing the quantum states of light for illumination, precise phase and absorption estimations can be achieved with precision beyond the standard quantum limit. Despite their significance for precision measurements, quantum states are fragile in noisy environments which leads to difficulties in revealing the quantum advantage. In this work, we propose a scheme to improve optical absorption estimation precision by using the correlated photon pairs from spontaneous parametric down-conversion as the illumination. This scheme performs better than clasical illumination when the loss is below a critical value. Experimentally, the scheme is demonstrated by a scanning transmission type microscope that uses correlated photon illumination. As a result, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of a two-photon image shows a $1.36$-fold enhancement over that of single-photon image for a single-layer graphene with a $0.98$ transmittance. This enhancement factor will be larger when using multi-mode squeezed state as the illumination.

Topological photonic orbital angular momentum switch

The large number of available orbital angular momentum (OAM) states of photons provides a unique resource for many important applications in quantum information and optical communications. However, conventional OAM switching devices usually rely on precise parameter control and are limited by slow switching rate and low efficiency. Here we propose a robust, fast and efficient photonic OAM switch device based on a topological process, where photons are adiabatically pumped to a target OAM state on demand. Such topological OAM pumping can be realized through manipulating photons in a few degenerate main cavities and involves only a limited number of optical elements. A large change of OAM at $\sim 10^{q}$ can be realized with only $q$ degenerate main cavities and at most $5q$ pumping cycles. The topological photonic OAM switch may become a powerful device for broad applications in many different fields and motivate novel topological design of conventional optical devices.

Gapless spin liquid ground state of spin-1/2 $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg model on square lattices

The spin-1/2 $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg model on square lattices are investigated via the finite projected entangled pair states (PEPS) method. Using the recently developed gradient optimization method combining with Monte Carlo sampling techniques, we are able to obtain the ground states energies that are competitive to the best results. The calculations show that there is no Néel order, dimer order and plaquette order in the region of 0.42 $\lesssim J_2/J_1\lesssim$ 0.6, suggesting a single spin liquid phase in the intermediate region. Furthermore, the calculated staggered spin, dimer and plaquette correlation functions all have power law decay behaviours, which provide strong evidences that the intermediate nonmagnetic phase is a single gapless spin liquid state.

Dynamical topological invariants and reduced rate functions for dynamical quantum phase transitions in two dimensions

We show that dynamical quantum phase transitions (DQPTs) in the quench dynamics of two-dimensional topological systems can be characterized by a dynamical topological invariant defined along an appropriately chosen closed contour in momentum space. Such a dynamical topological invariant reflects the vorticity of dynamical vortices responsible for the DQPTs, and thus serves as a dynamical topological order parameter in two dimensions. We demonstrate that when the contour crosses topologically protected fixed points in the quench dynamics, an intimate connection can be established between the dynamical topological order parameter in two dimensions and those in one dimension. We further define a reduced rate function of the Loschmidt echo on the contour, which features non-analyticities at critical times and is sufficient to characterize DQPTs in two dimensions. We illustrate our results using the Haldane honeycomb model and the quantum anomalous Hall model as concrete examples, both of which have been experimentally realized using cold atoms.

Fulde-Ferrell superfluids in spinless ultracold Fermi gases

The Fulde-Ferrell (FF) superfluid phase, in which fermions form finite-momentum Cooper pairings, is well studied in spin-singlet superfluids in past decades. Different from previous works that engineer the FF state in spinful cold atoms, we show that the FF state can emerge in spinless Fermi gases confined in optical lattice associated with nearest-neighbor interactions. The mechanism of the spinless FF state relies on the split Fermi surfaces by tuning the chemistry potential, which naturally gives rise to finite-momentum Cooper pairings. The phase transition is accompanied by changed Chern numbers, in which, different from the conventional picture, the band gap does not close. By beyond-mean-field calculations, we find the finite-momentum pairing is more robust, yielding the system promising for maintaining the FF state at finite temperature. Finally we present the possible realization and detection scheme of the spinless FF state.

Revealing photons behaviors in a birefringent interferometer

The interferometer is one of the most important devices for revealing the nature of light and for precision optical metrology. Though lots of experiments were performed for probing photons behaviors in various configurations, a complete study of photons behavior in a birefringent interferometer has not ever been performed. Based on an environmental turbulence immune Mach-Zehnder interferometer, tunable photonic beatings by rotating a birefringent crystal versus the temperature of the crystal for both single-photon and two-photon are observed. Furthermore, the two-photon interference fringes beat two times faster than the single-photon interference fringes. This beating effect is used to determine the thermal dispersion coefficients of the two principal refractive axes with a single measurement, the two-photon interference shows super-resolution and high sensitivity. Obvious differences between two-photon and single photon interference are also revealed in an unbalanced situations. In addition, influences of the photon bandwidth to the beating behaviors that come from polarization-dependent decoherence are also investigated. Our findings will be important for better understanding the behavior of two-photon interference in a birefringent interferometer and for precision optical metrology with quantum enhancement.

Emergent Haldane phase in an alternating bond $\mathbb{Z}_3$ parafermion chain

The Haldane phase represents one of the most important symmetry protected states in modern physics. This state can be realized using spin-1 and spin-${1\over 2}$ Heisenberg models and bosonic particles. Here we explore the emergent Haldane phase in an alternating bond $\mathbb{Z}_3$ parafermion chain, which is different from the previous proposals from fundamental statistics and symmetries. We show that this emergent phase can also be characterized by a modified long-range string order, as well as four-fold degeneracy in the ground state energies and entanglement spectra. This phase is protected by both the charge conjugate and parity symmetry, and the edge modes are shown to satisfy parafermionic statistics, in which braiding of the two edge modes yields a ${2π\over 3}$ phase. This model also supports rich phases, including topological ferromagnetic parafermion (FP) phase, trivial paramagnetic parafermion phase, classical dimer phase and gapless phase. The boundaries of the FP phase are shown to be gapless and critical with central charge $c = 4/5$. Even in the topological FP phase, it is also characterized by the long-range string order, thus we observe a drop of string order across the phase boundary between the FP phase and Haldane phase. These phenomena are quite general and this work opens a new way for finding exotic topological phases in $\mathbb{Z}_k$ parafermion models.

Practical gigahertz quantum key distribution robust against channel disturbance

Quantum key distribution (QKD) provides an attractive solution for secure communication. However, channel disturbance severely limits its application when a QKD system is transfered from the laboratory to the field. Here, a high-speed Faraday-Sagnac-Michelson QKD system is proposed that can automatically compensate for the channel polarization disturbance, which largely avoids the intermittency limitations of environment mutation. Over a 50-km fiber channel with 30-Hz polarization scrambling, the practicality of this phase-coding QKD system was characterized with an interference fringe visibility of 99:35% over 24 hours, and a stable secure key rate of 306k bits/s over 7 days without active polarization alignment.

Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen Entanglement between Separated Atomic Ensembles

The Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) entanglement is of special importance not only for fundamental research in quantum mechanics, but also for quantum information processing. Establishing EPR entanglement between two memory systems, such as atomic ensembles, nitrogen-vacancy centers, and rare-earth-ion-doped solids is promising for realizing spatial-multimode based quantum communication, quantum computation, and quantum imaging. To date, there have been few reports on realizing EPR entanglement between physical systems in true position and momentum. Here we describe successfully establishing such entanglement between two separated atomic ensembles by using quantum storage. We clearly prove the existence of EPR entanglement in position and momentum between two memories by demonstrating the satisfying of the inseparability criterion with the aid of quantum ghost-imaging and ghost-interference experiments.

Heisenberg-scaling measurement of the single-photon Kerr non-linearity using mixed states

Improving the precision of measurements is a significant scientific challenge. The challenge is twofold: first, overcoming noise that limits the precision given a fixed amount of a resource, N, and second, improving the scaling of precision over the standard quantum limit (SQL), 1/\sqrt{N}, and ultimately reaching a Heisenberg scaling (HS), 1/N. Here we present and experimentally implement a new scheme for precision measurements. Our scheme is based on a probe in a mixed state with a large uncertainty, combined with a post-selection of an additional pure system, such that the precision of the estimated coupling strength between the probe and the system is enhanced. We performed a measurement of a single photon's Kerr non-linearity with an HS, where an ultra-small Kerr phase of around 6 *10^{-8} rad was observed with an unprecedented precision of around 3.6* 10^{-10} rad. Moreover, our scheme utilizes an imaginary weak-value, the Kerr non-linearity results in a shift of the mean photon number of the probe, and hence, the scheme is robust to noise originating from the self-phase modulation.
