Factorization method with one plane wave: from model-driven and data-driven perspectives

The factorization method by Kirsch (1998) provides a necessary and sufficient condition for characterizing the shape and position of an unknown scatterer by using far-field patterns of infinitely many time-harmonic plane waves at a fixed frequency. This paper is concerned with the factorization method with a single far-field pattern to recover a convex polygonal scatterer/source. Its one-wave version relies on the absence of analytical continuation of the scattered/radiated wave-fields in corner domains. It can be regarded as a domain-defined sampling method and does not require forward solvers. In this paper we provide a rigorous mathematical justification of the one-wave factorization method and present some preliminary numerical examples. In particular, the proposed scheme can be interpreted as a model-driven and data-driven method, because it essentially depends on the scattering model and a priori given \emph{sample data}.

Stability inequality for a semilinear elliptic inverse problem

We establish a logarithmic stability inequality for the inverse problem of determining the non linear term, appearing in a semilinear BVP, from the corresponding Dirichlet-to-Neumann map (abbreviated to DtN map in the rest of this text). Our result can be seen as a stability inequality for an earlier uniqueness result by Isakov and Sylvester [Commun. Pure Appl. Math. 47 (1994), 1403-1410].

An orthogonalization-free parallelizable framework for all-electron calculations in density functional theory

All-electron calculations play an important role in density functional theory, in which improving computational efficiency is one of the most needed and challenging tasks. In the model formulations, both nonlinear eigenvalue problem and total energy minimization problem pursue orthogonal solutions. Most existing algorithms for solving these two models invoke orthogonalization process either explicitly or implicitly in each iteration. Their efficiency suffers from this process in view of its cubic complexity and low parallel scalability in terms of the number of electrons for large scale systems. To break through this bottleneck, we propose an orthogonalization-free algorithm framework based on the total energy minimization problem. It is shown that the desired orthogonality can be gradually achieved without invoking orthogonalization in each iteration. Moreover, this framework fully consists of Basic Linear Algebra Subprograms (BLAS) operations and thus can be naturally parallelized. The global convergence of the proposed algorithm is established. We also present a precondition technique which can dramatically accelerate the convergence of the algorithm. The numerical experiments on all-electron calculations show the efficiency and high scalability of the proposed algorithm.

Bayesian Approach to Inverse Time-harmonic Acoustic Scattering from Sound-soft Obstacles with Phaseless Data

This paper concerns the Bayesian approach to inverse acoustic scattering problems of inferring the position and shape of a sound-soft obstacle from phaseless far-field data generated by point source waves. To improve the convergence rate, we use the Gibbs sampling and preconditioned Crank-Nicolson (pCN) algorithm with random proposal variance to implement the Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method. This usually leads to heavy computational cost, since the unknown obstacle is parameterized in high dimensions. To overcome this challenge, we examine a surrogate model constructed by the generalized polynomial chaos (gPC) method to reduce the computational cost. Numerical examples are provided to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Uniqueness for time-dependent inverse problems with single dynamical data

In this work, we investigate the shape identification and coefficient determination associated with two time-dependent partial differential equations in two dimensions. We consider the inverse problems of determining a convex polygonal obstacle and the coefficient appearing in the wave and Schrödinger equations from a single dynamical data along with the time. With the far field data, we first prove that the sound speed of the wave equation together with its contrast support of convex-polygon type can be uniquely determined, then establish a uniqueness result for recovering an electric potential as well as its support appearing in the Schrödinger equation. As a consequence of these results, we demonstrate a uniqueness result for recovering the refractive index of a medium from a single far field pattern at a fixed frequency in the time-harmonic regime.

Inverse source problems in an inhomogeneous medium with a single far-field pattern

This paper concerns time-harmonic inverse source problems with a single far-field pattern in two dimensions, where the source term is compactly supported in an a priori given inhomogeneous background medium. For convex-polygonal source terms, we prove that the source support together with the zeroth and first order derivatives of the source function at corner points can be uniquely determined. Further, we prove that an admissible set of source functions (including harmonic functions) having a convex-polygonal support can be uniquely identified by a single far-field pattern. A class of radiating sources is characterized and the extension of the radiated field across a corner point is proven impossible. The corner scattering theory leads to a data-driven inversion scheme for imaging an arbitrarily convex-polygonal source support.

Bayesian Approach to Inverse Time-harmonic Acoustic Scattering with Phaseless Far-field Data

This paper is concerned with inverse acoustic scattering problem of inferring the position and shape of a sound-soft obstacle from phaseless far-field data. We propose the Bayesian approach to recover sound-soft disks, line cracks and kite-shaped obstacles through properly chosen incoming waves in two dimensions. Given the Gaussian prior measure, the well-posedness of the posterior measure in the Bayesian approach is discussed. The Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method is adopted in the numerical approximation and the preconditioned Crank-Nicolson (pCN) algorithm with random proposal variance is utilized to improve the convergence rate. Numerical examples are provided to illustrate effectiveness of the proposed method.

Inverse moving source problem for fractional diffusion(-wave) equations: Determination of orbits

This paper is concerned with the inverse problem on determining an orbit of the moving source in a fractional diffusion(-wave) equations in a connected bounded domain of $\mathbb R^d$ or in the whole space $\mathbb R^d$. Based on a newly established fractional Duhamel's principle, we derive a Lipschitz stability estimate in the case of a localized moving source by the observation data at $d$ interior points. The uniqueness for the general non-localized moving source is verified with additional data of more interior observations.

Inverse scattering for the one-dimensional Helmholtz equation with piecewise constant wave speed

This paper analyzes inverse scattering for the one-dimensional Helmholtz equation in the case where the wave speed is piecewise constant. Scattering data recorded for an arbitrarily small interval of frequencies is shown to determine the wave speed uniquely, and a direct reconstruction algorithm is presented. The algorithm is exact provided data is recorded for a sufficiently wide range of frequencies and the jump points of the wave speed are equally spaced with respect to travel time. Numerical examples show that the algorithm works also in the general case of arbitrary wave speed (either with jumps or continuously varying etc.) giving progressively more accurate approximations as the range of recorded frequencies increases. A key underlying theoretical insight is to associate scattering data to compositions of automorphisms of the unit disk, which are in turn related to orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle. The algorithm exploits the three-term recurrence of orthogonal polynomials to reduce the required computation.

Direct and inverse time-harmonic elastic scattering from point-like and extended obstacles

This paper concerns the time-harmonic direct and inverse elastic scattering by an extended rigid elastic body surrounded by a finite number of point-like obstacles. We first justify the point-interaction model for the Lamé operator within the singular perturbation approach. For a general family of pointwise-supported singular perturbations, including anisotropic and non-local interactions, we derive an explicit representation of the scattered field. In the case of isotropic and local point-interactions, our result is consistent with the ones previously obtained by Foldy's formal method as well as by the renormalization technique. In the case of multiple scattering with pointwise and extended obstacles, we show that the scattered field consists of two parts: one is due to the diffusion by the extended scatterer and the other one is a linear combination of the interactions between the point-like obstacles and the interaction between the point-like obstacles with the extended one. As to the inverse problem, the factorization method by Kirsch is adapted to recover simultaneously the shape of an extended elastic body and the location of point-like scatterers in the case of isotropic and local interactions. The inverse problems using only one type of elastic waves (i.e. pressure or shear waves) are also investigated and numerical examples are present to confirm the inversion schemes.

Elastic scattering from rough surfaces in three dimensions

Consider the elastic scattering of a plane or point incident wave by an unbounded and rigid rough surface. The angular spectrum representation (ASR) for the time-harmonic Navier equation is derived in three dimensions. The ASR is utilized as a radiation condition to the elastic rough surface scattering problem. The uniqueness is proved through a Rellich-type identity for surfaces given by uniformly Lipschitz functions. In the case of flat surfaces with a local perturbation, we deduce an equivalent variational formulation in a truncated bounded domain and show the existence results for general incoming waves. The main ingredient of the proof is the radiating behavior of the Green tensor to the first boundary value problem of the Navier equation in a half space.

Uniqueness to some inverse source problems for the wave equation in unbounded domains

This paper is concerned with inverse acoustic source problems in an unbounded domain with dynamical boundary surface data of Dirichlet kind. The measurement data are taken at a surface far away from the source support. We prove uniqueness in recovering source terms of the form $f(x)g(t)$ and $f(x_1,x_2,t) h(x_3)$, where $g(t)$ and $h(x_3)$ are given and $x=(x_1, x_2, x_3)$ is the spatial variable in three dimensions. Without these a priori information, we prove that the boundary data of a family of solutions can be used to recover general source terms depending on both time and spatial variables. For moving point sources radiating periodic signals, the data recorded at four receivers are proven sufficient to uniquely recover the orbit function. Simultaneous determination of embedded obstacles and source terms was verified in an inhomogeneous background medium using the observation data of infinite time period. Our approach depends heavily on the Laplace transform.

Uniqueness and stability for the recovery of a time-dependent source in elastodynamics

This paper is concerned with inverse source problems for the time-dependent Lamé system in an unbounded domain corresponding to the exterior of a bounded cavity or the full space $\R^3$. If the time and spatial variables of the source term can be separated with compact support, we prove that the vector valued spatial source term can be uniquely determined by boundary Dirichlet data in the exterior of a given cavity. Uniqueness and stability for recovering some class of time-dependent source terms are also obtained using partial boundary data.

Uniqueness and factorization method for inverse elastic scattering with a single incoming wave

The first part of this paper is concerned with the uniqueness to inverse time-harmonic elastic scattering from bounded rigid obstacles in two dimensions. It is proved that a connected polygonal obstacle can be uniquely identified by the far-field pattern over all observation directions corresponding to a single incident plane wave. Our approach is based on a new reflection principle for the first boundary value problem of the Navier equation. In the second part, we propose a revisited factorization method to recover a rigid elastic body with a single far-field pattern.

Time-harmonic acoustic scattering from a non-locally perturbed trapezoidal surface

This paper is concerned with acoustic scattering from a sound-soft trapezoidal surface in two dimensions. The trapezoidal surface is supposed to consist of two horizontal half-lines pointing oppositely, and a single finite vertical line segment connecting their endpoints, which can be regarded as a non-local perturbation of a straight line. For incident plane waves, we enforce that the scattered wave, post-subtracting reflected plane waves by the two half lines of the scattering surface in certain two regions respectively, satisfies an integral form of Sommerfeld radiation condition at infinity. With this new radiation condition, we prove uniqueness and existence of weak solutions by a coupling scheme between finite element and integral equation methods. This consequently indicates that our new radiation condition is sharper than the Angular Spectrum Representation, and has generalized the radiation condition for scattering problems in a locally perturbed half-plane. Furthermore, we develop a numerical mode matching method based on this new radiation condition. A perfectly matched layer is setup to absorb outgoing waves at infinity. Since the medium composes of two horizontally uniform regions, we expand, in either uniform region, the scattered wave in terms of eigenmodes and match the mode expansions on the common interface between the two uniform regions, which in turn gives rise to numerical solutions to our problem. Numerical experiments are carried out to validate the new radiation condition and to show the performance of our numerical method.

Uniqueness to Inverse Acoustic and Electromagnetic Scattering From Locally Perturbed Rough Surfaces

In this paper, we consider inverse time-harmonic acoustic and electromagnetic scattering from locally perturbed rough surfaces in three dimensions. The scattering interface is supposed to be the graph of a Lipschitz continuous function with compact support. It is proved that an acoustically sound-soft or sound-hard surface can be uniquely determined by the far-field pattern of infinite number of incident plane waves with distinct directions. Moreover, a single point source or plane wave can be used to uniquely determine a scattering surface of polyhedral type. These uniqueness results apply to Maxwell equations with the perfectly conducting boundary condition. Our arguments rely on the mixed reciprocity relation in a half space and the reflection principle for Helmholtz and Maxwell equations.

Inverse moving source problems in electrodynamics

This paper is concerned with the uniqueness on two inverse moving source problems in electrodynamics with partial boundary data. We show that (1) if the temporal source function is compactly supported, then the spatial source profile function or the orbit function can be uniquely determined by the tangential trace of the electric field measured on part of a sphere, (2) if the temporal function is given by a Dirac distribution, then the impulsive time point and the source location can be uniquely determined at four receivers on a sphere.

Unique determination of a penetrable scatterer of rectangular type for inverse Maxwell equations by a single incoming wave

This work is concerned with an inverse electromagnetic scattering problem in two dimensions. We prove that in the TE polarization case, the knowledge of the electric far-field pattern incited by a single incoming wave is sufficient to uniquely determine the shape of a penetrable scatterer of rectangular type. As a by-product, the uniqueness is also confirmed to inverse transmission problems modelled by scalar Helmholtz equations with discontinuous normal derivatives at the scattering interface.
