An Efficient Steady-State Solver for Microflows with High-Order Moment Model

In [Z. Hu, R. Li, and Z. Qiao. Acceleration for microflow simulations of high-order moment models by using lower-order model correction. J. Comput. Phys., 327:225-244, 2016], it has been successfully demonstrated that using lower-order moment model correction is a promising idea to accelerate the steady-state computation of high-order moment models of the Boltzmann equation. To develop the existing solver, the following aspects are studied in this paper. First, the finite volume method with linear reconstruction is employed for high-resolution spatial discretization so that the degrees of freedom in spatial space could be reduced remarkably without loss of accuracy. Second, by introducing an appropriate parameter $τ$ in the correction step, it is found that the performance of the solver can be improved significantly, i.e., more levels would be involved in the solver, which further accelerates the convergence of the method. Third, Heun's method is employed as the smoother in each level to enhance the robustness of the solver. Numerical experiments in microflows are carried out to demonstrate the efficiency and to investigate the behavior of the new solver. In addition, several order reduction strategies for the choice of the order sequence of the solver are tested, and the strategy $m_{l-1} = \lceil m_{l} / 2 \rceil$ is found to be most efficient.

Integrated Linear Reconstruction for Finite Volume Scheme on Arbitrary Unstructured Grids

In [L. Chen and R. Li, Journal of Scientific Computing, Vol. 68, pp. 1172--1197, (2016)], an integrated linear reconstruction was proposed for finite volume methods on unstructured grids. However, the geometric hypothesis of the mesh to enforce a local maximum principle is too restrictive to be satisfied by, for example, locally refined meshes or distorted meshes generated by arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian methods in practical applications. In this paper, we propose an improved integrated linear reconstruction approach to get rid of the geometric hypothesis. The resulting optimization problem is a convex quadratic programming problem, and hence can be solved efficiently by classical active-set methods. The features of the improved integrated linear reconstruction include that i). the local maximum principle is fulfilled on arbitrary unstructured grids, ii). the reconstruction is parameter-free, and iii). the finite volume scheme is positivity-preserving when the reconstruction is generalized to the Euler equations. A variety of numerical experiments are presented to demonstrate the performance of this method.

A direct imaging method for inverse elastic scattering by unbounded rigid rough surfaces

This paper is concerned with the inverse time-harmonic elastic scattering problem of recovering unbounded rough surfaces in two dimensions. We assume that elastic plane waves with different directions are incident onto a rigid rough surface in a half plane. The elastic scattered field is measured on a horizontal straight line segment within a finite distance above the rough surface. A direct imaging algorithm is proposed to recover the unbounded rough surface from the scattered near-field data, which involves only inner products between the data. Numerical experiments are presented to show that the inversion scheme is not only efficient but also accurate and robust with respect to noise.

Weakly singular corners always scatter

Assume that a bounded scatterer is embedded into an infinite homogeneous isotropic background medium in two dimensions. The refractive index function is supposed to be piecewise constant. If the scattering interface contains a weakly or strongly singular point, we prove that the scattered field cannot vanish identically. This particularly leads to the absence of non-scattering energies for piecewise analytic interfaces with a weakly singular point. Local uniqueness is obtained for shape identification problems in inverse medium scattering with a single far-field pattern.

Fast acoustic source imaging using multi-frequency sparse data

We consider the acoustic source imaging problems using multiple frequency data. Using the data of one observation direction/point, we prove that some information (size and location) of the source support can be recovered. A non-iterative method is then proposed to image the source for the Helmholtz equation using multiple frequency far field data of one or several observation directions. The method is simple to implement and extremely fast since it only computes an indicator function on the interested domain using only matrix vector multiplications. Numerical examples are presented to validate the effectiveness of the method.

Inverse source problems in elastodynamics

We are concerned with time-dependent inverse source problems in elastodynamics. The source term is supposed to be the product of a spatial function and a temporal function with compact support. We present frequency-domain and time-domain approaches to show uniqueness in determining the spatial function from wave fields on a large sphere over a finite interval. Stability estimate of the temporal function from the data of one receiver and uniqueness result using partial boundary data are proved. Our arguments rely heavily on the use of the Fourier transform, which motivated inversion schemes that can be easily implemented. A Landweber iterative algorithm for recovering the spatial function and a non-iterative inversion scheme based on the uniqueness proof for recovering the temporal function are proposed. Numerical examples are demonstrated in both two and three dimensions.

Determination of singular time-dependent coefficients for wave equations from full and partial data

We study the problem of determining uniquely a time-dependent singular potential $q$, appearing in the wave equation $\partial_t^2u-Δ_x u+q(t,x)u=0$ in $Q=(0,T)\timesΩ$ with $T>0$ and $Ω$ a $ \mathcal C^2$ bounded domain of $\mathbb R^n$, $n\geq2$. We start by considering the unique determination of some singular time-dependent coefficients from observations on $\partial Q$. Then, by weakening the singularities of the set of admissible coefficients, we manage to reduce the set of data that still guaranties unique recovery of such a coefficient. To our best knowledge, this paper is the first claiming unique determination of unbounded time-dependent coefficients, which is motivated by the problem of determining general nonlinear terms appearing in nonlinear wave equations.

Two-Dimensional Elastic Scattering Coefficients and Enhancement of Nearly Elastic Cloaking

The concept of scattering coefficients has played a pivotal role in a broad range of inverse scattering and imaging problems in acoustic, and electromagnetic media. In view of their promising applications in inverse problems related to mathematical imaging and elastic cloaking, the notion of elastic scattering coefficients of an inclusion is presented from the perspective of boundary layer potentials and a few properties are discussed. A reconstruction algorithm is developed and analyzed for extracting the elastic scattering coefficients from multi-static response measurements of the scattered field in order to cater to inverse scattering problems. The decay rate, stability and error analyses, and the estimate of maximal resolving order in terms of the signal-to-noise ratio are discussed. Moreover, scattering-coefficients-vanishing structures are designed and their utility for enhancement of nearly elastic cloaking is elucidated.

Direct and Inverse Elastic Scattering From Anisotropic Media

Assume a time-harmonic elastic wave is incident onto a penetrable anisotropic body embedded into a homogeneous isotropic background medium. We propose an equivalent variational formulation in a truncated bounded domain and show the uniqueness and existence of weak solutions by applying the Fredholm alternative and using properties of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map in both two and three dimensions. The Fréchet derivative of the near-field solution operator with respect to the boundary of the scatterer is derived. As an application, we design a descent algorithm for recovering the interface from the near-field data of one or several incident directions and frequencies. Numerical examples in 2D are presented to show the validity and accuracy of our methods.

Acoustic Scattering from Corners, Edges and Circular Cones

Consider the time-harmonic acoustic scattering from a bounded penetrable obstacle imbedded in an isotropic homogeneous medium. The obstacle is supposed to possess a circular conic point or an edge point on the boundary in three dimensions and a planar corner point in two dimensions. The opening angles of cones and edges are allowed to be any number in $(0,2π)\backslash\{π\}$. We prove that such an obstacle scatters any incoming wave non-trivially (i.e., the far field patterns cannot vanish identically), leading to the absence of real non-scattering wavenumbers. Local and global uniqueness results for the inverse problem of recovering the shape of a penetrable scatterers are also obtained using a single incoming wave. Our approach relies on the singularity analysis of the inhomogeneous Laplace equation in a cone.

Shape identification in inverse medium scattering problems with a single far-field pattern

Consider time-harmonic acoustic scattering from a bounded penetrable obstacle $D\subset \mathbb R^N$ embedded in a homogeneous background medium. The index of refraction characterizing the material inside $D$ is supposed to be Hölder continuous near the corners. If $D\subset \mathbb R^2$ is a convex polygon, we prove that its shape and location can be uniquely determined by the far-field pattern incited by a single incident wave at a fixed frequency. In dimensions $N \geq 3$, the uniqueness applies to penetrable scatterers of rectangular type with additional assumptions on the smoothness of the contrast. Our arguments are motivated by recent studies on the absence of non-scattering wavenumbers in domains with corners. As a byproduct, we show that the smoothness conditions in previous corner scattering results are only required near the corners.

Nearly cloaking the elastic wave fields

In this work, we develop a general mathematical framework on regularized approximate cloaking of elastic waves governed by the Lamé system via the approach of transformation elastodynamics. Our study is rather comprehensive. We first provide a rigorous justification of the transformation elastodynamics. Based on the blow-up-a-point construction, elastic material tensors for a perfect cloak are derived and shown to possess singularities. In order to avoid the singular structure, we propose to regularize the blow-up-a-point construction to be the blow-up-a-small-region construction. However, it is shown that without incorporating a suitable lossy layer, the regularized construction would fail due to resonant inclusions. In order to defeat the failure of the lossless construction, a properly designed lossy layer is introduced into the regularized cloaking construction . We derive sharp asymptotic estimates in assessing the cloaking performance. The proposed cloaking scheme is capable of nearly cloaking an arbitrary content with a high accuracy.

Inverse Elastic Scattering for Multiscale Rigid Bodies with A Single Far-field Pattern

We develop three inverse elastic scattering schemes for locating multiple small, extended and multiscale rigid bodies, respectively. There are some salient and promising features of the proposed methods. The cores of those schemes are certain indicator functions, which are obtained by using only a single far-field pattern of the pressure (longitudinal) wave, or the shear (transversal) wave, or the total wave field. Though the inverse scattering problem is known to be nonlinear and ill-posed, the proposed reconstruction methods are totally "direct" and there are no inversions involved. Hence, the methods are very efficient and robust against noisy data. Both rigorous mathematical justifications and numerical simulations are presented in our study.

Uniqueness in Determining Refractive Indices by Formally-determined Far-field Data

We present two uniqueness results for the inverse problem of determining an index of refraction by the corresponding acoustic far-field measurement encoded into the scattering amplitude. The first one is a local uniqueness in determining a variable index of refraction by the fixed incident-direction scattering amplitude. The inverse problem is formally posed with such measurement data. The second one is a global uniqueness in determining a constant refractive index by a single far-field measurement. The arguments are based on the study of certain nonlinear and non-selfadjoint interior transmission eigenvalue problems.

An inverse electromagnetic scattering problem for a bi-periodic inhomogeneous layer on a perfectly conducting plate

This paper is concerned with uniqueness for reconstructing a periodic inhomogeneous medium covered on a perfectly conducting plate. We deal with the problem in the frame of time-harmonic Maxwell systems without TE or TM polarization. An orthogonal relation for two refractive indices is obtained, and then inspired by Kirsch's idea, the refractive index can be identified by utilizing the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of a quasi-periodic Sturm-Liouville eigenvalue problem.

The linear sampling method for the inverse electromagnetic scattering by a partially coated bi-periodic structure

In this paper, we consider the inverse problem of recovering a doubly periodic Lipschitz structure through the measurement of the scattered field above the structure produced by point sources lying above the structure. The medium above the structure is assumed to be homogenous and lossless with a positive dielectric coefficient. Below the structure is a perfect conductor partially coated with a dielectric. A periodic version of the linear sampling method is developed to reconstruct the doubly periodic structure using the near field data. In this case, the far field equation defined on the unit ball of R^3 is replaced by the near field equation which is a linear integral equation of the first kind defined on a plane above the periodic surface.
