Plume motion and large-scale circulation in a cylindrical Rayleigh-Bénard cell

We used the time correlation of shadowgraph images to determine the angle $Θ$ of the horizontal component of the plume velocity above (below) the center of the bottom (top) plate of a cylindrical Rayleigh-Bénard cell of aspect ratio $Γ\equiv D/L = 1$ ($D$ is the diameter and $L \simeq 87$ mm the height) in the Rayleigh-number range $7\times 10^7 \leq R \leq 3\times 10^{9}$ for a Prandtl number $σ= 6$. We expect that $Θ$ gives the direction of the large-scale circulation. It oscillates time-periodically. Near the top and bottom plates $Θ(t)$ has the same frequency but is anti-correlated.

Dynamics of fluctuations in a fluid below the onset of Rayleigh-Bénard convection

We present experimental data and their theoretical interpretation for the decay rates of temperature fluctuations in a thin layer of a fluid heated from below and confined between parallel horizontal plates. The measurements were made with the mean temperature of the layer corresponding to the critical isochore of sulfur hexafluoride above but near the critical point where fluctuations are exceptionally strong. They cover a wide range of temperature gradients below the onset of Rayleigh-Bénard convection, and span wave numbers on both sides of the critical value for this onset. The decay rates were determined from experimental shadowgraph images of the fluctuations at several camera exposure times. We present a theoretical expression for an exposure-time-dependent structure factor which is needed for the data analysis. As the onset of convection is approached, the data reveal the critical slowing-down associated with the bifurcation. Theoretical predictions for the decay rates as a function of the wave number and temperature gradient are presented and compared with the experimental data. Quantitative agreement is obtained if allowance is made for some uncertainty in the small spacing between the plates, and when an empirical estimate is employed for the influence of symmetric deviations from the Oberbeck-Boussinesq approximation which are to be expected in a fluid with its density at the mean temperature located on the critical isochore.

Finite-Size Scaling and Universality of the Thermal Resistivity of Liquid $^4$He near $T_λ$

We present measurements of the thermal resistivity $ρ(t,P,L)$ near the superfluid transition of $^4$He at saturated vapor pressure and confined in cylindrical geometries with radii $L=0.5$ and 1.0 $μ$m ($t\equiv T/T_λ(P) - 1$). For $L = 1.0 μ$m measurements at six pressures $P$ are presented. At and above $T_λ$ the data are consistent with a universal scaling function $F=(L/ξ_0)^{x/ν}(R/R_0)$, $X= (L/ξ_0)^{1/ν}t$ valid for all $P$ ($R_0$ and $x$ are the pressure-dependent amplitude and effective exponent of the bulk resistivity $R$ and $ξ= ξ_0 t^{-ν}$ is the correlation length).

Fluctuations in a fluid with a thermal gradient

We report measurements of the temperature fluctuations in a horizontal layer of a pure fluid confined between parallel plates and heated from below. Consistent with earlier work we found that the structure factor $S_T(q)$ (the square of the modulus of the Fourier transform of the temperature field) was consistent with $S_T(q) \sim q^{-4}$ for large horizontal wavenumbers $q$. As $q$ decreased, $S(q)$ increased less rapidly, passed through a maximum, and then approached zero. The results agree qualitatively, but not quantitatively, with the predictions of Ortiz de Zárate and Sengers.

Singularity in the boundary resistance between superfluid $^4$He and a solid surface

We report new measurements in four cells of the thermal boundary resistance $R$ between copper and $^4$He below but near the superfluid-transition temperature $T_λ$. For $10^{-7} \leq t \equiv 1 - T/T_λ\leq 10^{-4}$ fits of $R = R_0 t^{x_b} + B_0$ to the data yielded $x_b \simeq 0.18$, whereas a fit to theoretical values based on the renormalization-group theory yielded $x_b = 0.23$. Alternatively, a good fit of the theory to the data could be obtained if the {\it amplitude} of the prediction was reduced by a factor close to two. The results raise the question whether the boundary conditions used in the theory should be modified.

Deviations from linear theory for fluctuations below the supercritical primary bifurcation to electroconvection

We report measurements of thermally-induced mean-square director-angle fluctuations below primary supercritical bifurcations to electroconvection of the nematic liquid crystals I52 and "Merck Phase V". For epsilon_mf = V^2/V_c,mf^2 - 1 < -0.1 (V is the amplitude of the applied alternating voltage) we find proportional to epsilon_mf^(-gamma) with gamma given by linear theory (LT). Closer to the bifurcation there are deviations from LT with a smaller gamma and with V_c^2 > V_c,mf^2. For I52 measurements as a function of the conductivity sigma of above V_c^2 suggest a tricritical bifurcation at sigma_t = 4.0 x 10^(-9) Omega^(-1)m^(-1), and (V_c^2 - V_c,mf^2)/V_c^2 increases strongly as sigma_t is approached from above.

Heat Transport in Turbulent Rayleigh-Benard Convection

We present measurements of the Nusselt number $\cal N$ as a function of the Rayleigh number $R$ in cylindrical cells with aspect ratios $0.5 \leq Γ\equiv D/d \leq 12.8$ ($D$ is the diameter and $d$ the height). We used acetone with a Prandtl number $σ= 4.0$ for $10^5 \alt R \alt 4\times10^{10}$. A fit of a powerlaw ${\cal N} = {\cal N}_0 R^{γ_{eff}}$ over limited ranges of $R$ yielded values of $γ_{eff}$ from 0.275 near $R = 10^7$ to 0.300 near $R = 10^{10}$. The data are inconsistent with a single powerlaw for ${\cal N}(R)$. For $R > 10^7$ they are consistent with ${\cal N} = a σ^{-1/12} R^{1/4} + b σ^{-1/7} R^{3/7}$ as proposed by Grossmann and Lohse for $σ\agt 2$.

Extensive Scaling and Nonuniformity of the Karhunen-Loève Decomposition for the Spiral-Defect Chaos State

By analyzing large-aspect-ratio spiral-defect-chaos (SDC) convection images, we show that the Karhunen-Loève decomposition (KLD) scales extensively for subsystem-sizes larger than 4d (d is the fluid depth), which strongly suggests that SDC is extensively chaotic. From this extensive scaling, the intensive length ξ_KLD is computed and found to have a different dependence on the Rayleigh number than the two-point correlation length ξ_2. Local computations of ξ_KLD reveal a substantial spatial nonuniformity of SDC that extends over radii 18d< r < 45d in a Γ=109 aspect-ratio cell.

Boundary Limitation of Wavenumbers in Taylor-Vortex Flow

We report experimental results for a boundary-mediated wavenumber-adjustment mechanism and for a boundary-limited wavenumber-band of Taylor-vortex flow (TVF). The system consists of fluid contained between two concentric cylinders with the inner one rotating at an angular frequency $Ω$. As observed previously, the Eckhaus instability (a bulk instability) is observed and limits the stable wavenumber band when the system is terminated axially by two rigid, non-rotating plates. The band width is then of order $ε^{1/2}$ at small $ε$ ($ε\equiv Ω/Ω_c - 1$) and agrees well with calculations based on the equations of motion over a wide $ε$-range. When the cylinder axis is vertical and the upper liquid surface is free (i.e. an air-liquid interface), vortices can be generated or expelled at the free surface because there the phase of the structure is only weakly pinned. The band of wavenumbers over which Taylor-vortex flow exists is then more narrow than the stable band limited by the Eckhaus instability. At small $ε$ the boundary-mediated band-width is linear in $ε$. These results are qualitatively consistent with theoretical predictions, but to our knowledge a quantitative calculation for TVF with a free surface does not exist.

Rayleigh-Bénard convection in a homeotropically aligned nematic liquid crystal

We report experimental results for convection near onset in a thin layer of a homeotropically aligned nematic liquid crystal heated from below as a function of the temperature difference $ΔT$ and the applied vertical magnetic field $H$ and compare them with theoretical calculations. The experiments cover the field range $8 \alt h \equiv H/ H_{F} \alt 80$ ($H_F =$ is the Fréedericksz field). For $h$ less than a codimension-two field $h_{ct} \simeq 46$ the bifurcation is subcritical and oscillatory, with travelling- and standing-wave transients. Beyond $h_{ct}$ the bifurcation is stationary and subcritical until a tricritical field $h_t= 57.2$ is reached, beyond which it is supercritical. The bifurcation sequence as a function of $h$ found in the experiment confirms the qualitative aspects of the theoretical predictions. However, the value of $h_{ct}$ is about 10% higher than the predicted value and the results for $k_c$ are systematically below the theory by about 2% at small $h$ and by as much as 7% near $h_{ct}$. At $h_{ct}$, $k_c$ is continuous within the experimental resolution whereas the theory indicates a 7% discontinuity. The theoretical tricritical field $h_t^{th} = 51$ is somewhat below the experimental one. The fully developed flow above $R_c$ for $h < h_{ct}$ is chaotic. For $h_{ct} < h < h_t$ the subcritical stationary bifurcation also leads to a chaotic state. The chaotic states persist upon reducing the Rayleigh number below $R_c$, i.e. the bifurcation is hysteretic. Above the tricritical field $h_t$, we find a bifurcation to a time independent pattern which within our resolution is non-hysteretic.

Square patterns in Rayleigh-Benard convection with rotation about a vertical axis

We present experimental results for Rayleigh-Benard convection with rotation about a vertical axis at dimensionless rotation rates in the range 0 to 250 and upto 20% above the onset. Critical Rayleigh numbers and wavenumbers agree with predictions of linear stability analysis. For rotation rates greater than 70 and close to onset, the patterns are cellular with local four-fold coordination and differ from the theoretically expected Kuppers-Lortz unstable state. Stable as well as intermittent defect-free square lattices exist over certain parameter ranges. Over other ranges defects dynamically disrupt the lattice but cellular flow and local four-fold coordination is maintained.

Thermal Fluctuations, Subcritical Bifurcation, and Nucleation of Localized States in Electroconvection

Measurements of the mean-square amplitude of thermally-induced fluctuations of a thin layer of the nematic liquid crystal I52 subjected to a voltage V < Vc are reported. They yield the limit of stability Vc of the spatially uniform conduction state to infinitesimal perturbations. Localized long-lived convecting structures known as worms form spontaneously from the fluctuations for V well below Vc. This, as well as measurements of the lifetime of the conduction state for V < Vc, suggests a thermally-activated mechanism of worm formation; but a theory for this non-potential system is lacking.

Competition between Spiral-Defect Chaos and Rolls in Rayleigh-Benard Convection

We present experimental results for pattern formation in Rayleigh-Benard convection of a fluid with a Prandtl number, Pr~ 4. We find that the spiral-defect-chaos (SDC) attractor which exists for Pr~1 has become unstable. Gradually increasing the temperature difference from below to well above its critical value no longer leads to SDC. A sudden jump of temperature difference from below to above onset causes convection to grow from thermal fluctuations and does yield SDC. However, the SDC is a transient; it coarsens and forms a single cell-filling spiral which then drifts toward the cell wall and disappears.

The Spatio-Temporal Structure of Spiral-Defect Chaos

We present a study of the recently discovered spatially-extended chaotic state known as spiral-defect chaos, which occurs in low-Prandtl-number, large-aspect-ratio Rayleigh-Benard convection. We employ the modulus squared of the space-time Fourier transform of time series of two-dimensional shadowgraph images to construct the structure factor ${S}({\vec k},ω)$. This analysis is used to characterize the average spatial and temporal scales of the chaotic state. We find that the correlation length and time can be described by power-law dependences on the reduced Rayleigh number $ε$. These power laws have as yet no theoretical explanation.

Thermally Induced Fluctuations Below the Onset of Rayleigh-Bénard Convection

We report quantitative experimental results for the intensity of noise-induced fluctuations below the critical temperature difference $ΔT_c$ for Rayleigh-Bénard convection. The structure factor of the fluctuating convection rolls is consistent with the expected rotational invariance of the system. In agreement with predictions based on stochastic hydrodynamic equations, the fluctuation intensity is found to be proportional to $1/\sqrt{-ε}$ where $ε\equiv ΔT / ΔT_c -1$. The noise power necessary to explain the measurements agrees with the prediction for thermal noise. (WAC95-1)

Spiral Defect Chaos in Large Aspect Ratio Rayleigh-Benard Convection

We report experiments on convection patterns in a cylindrical cell with a large aspect ratio. The fluid had a Prandtl number of approximately 1. We observed a chaotic pattern consisting of many rotating spirals and other defects in the parameter range where theory predicts that steady straight rolls should be stable. The correlation length of the pattern decreased rapidly with increasing control parameter so that the size of a correlated area became much smaller than the area of the cell. This suggests that the chaotic behavior is intrinsic to large aspect ratio geometries.
