Singlet-doublet transitions and Josephson currents in a superconducting ring with a quantum dot

We investigate the ground state properties of a superconducting ring embedded with a quantum dot (QD) by using a variational wave-function approach. A theoretical formulation for the treatment of the finite-U Anderson impurity coupled with a superconducting ring are presented. We demonstrate singlet-doublet transitions of the ground state for this system with the QD in the mixed valence regime. It is shown that the supercurrent in the superconductor ring shows oscillations with the external enclosed magnetic flux and exhibits abrupt jumps at the singlet-doublet phase transition points.

On the competition between the Kondo effect and the exchange interaction in a parallel double quantum dot system

We study the competition between the Kondo effect and the exchange interaction in the parallel double quantum dot(DQDs) system within an effective action field theory. The strong on-site Coulomb interactions in DQDs are treated by using the Hubbard-Stratonovich transformation and the introduction of scalar potential fields. We show that a self-consistent perturbation approach, which takes into account the statistical properties of the potential fields acting on the electrons in DQDs, describes well the crossover from the Kondo regime to the spin-singlet state in this system. The linear conductance and the intradot/interdot spin excitation spectra of this system are obtain

Transient currents of a single molecular junction with a vibrational mode

By using a propagation scheme for current matrices and an auxiliary mode expansion method, we investigate the transient dynamics of a single molecular junction coupled with a vibrational mode. Our approach is based on the Anderson-Holstein model and the dressed tunneling approximation for the electronic self-energy in the polaronic regime. The time-dependent currents after a sudden switching on the tunneling to leads and an abrupt upward step bias pulse are calculated. We show that the strong electron-phonon interaction greatly influences the nonlinear response properties of the system, and gives rise to interesting characteristics on the time traces of transient currents.

Full Counting Statistics of Electron Tunneling through Coherently Coupled Quantum Dots: Exchange Interaction Effect on Shot Noise

We investigate the zero-frequency shot noise of electronic tunneling through a single quantum dot (SQD) and coherently coupled quantum dots (CQD) taking into account the Coulomb interaction. Within Hartree-Fock approximation, the analytical expressions of current and zero-frequency shot noise are self-consistently derived in the framework of full counting statistics for the both systems. We demonstrate that the correction term of zero-frequency shot noise induced by the intradot Coulomb interaction is almost negligible compared to the noninteracting shot noise in a SQD, while in a CQD the interplay of the interdot coherence fluctuations and strong interdot Coulomb interaction can induce a super-Poissonian noise even in the symmetric case.

Phonon effects on the current noise spectra and the ac conductance of a single molecular junction

By using nonequilibrium Green's functions and the equation of motion method, we formulate a self-consistent field theory for the electron transport through a single molecular junction (SMJ) coupled with a vibrational mode. We show that the nonequilibrium dynamics of the phonons in strong electron-phonon coupling regime can be taken into account appropriately in this self-consistent perturbation theory, and the self-energy of phonons is connected with the current fluctuations in the molecular junction. We calculate the finite-frequency nonsymmetrized noise spectra and the ac conductance, which reveal a wealth of inelastic electron tunneling characteristics on the absorption and emission properties of this SMJ. In the presence of a finite bias voltage and the electron tunneling current, the vibration mode of the molecular junction is heated and driven to an unequilibrated state. The influences of unequilibrated phonons on the current and the noise spectra are investigated.

Finite frequency current fluctuations and the self-consistent perturbation theory for electron transport through quantum dot

We have formulated the problem of electron transport through interacting quantum dot system in the framework of self-consistent perturbation theory, and show that the current conservation condition is guaranteed due to the gauge invariant properties of the Green's functions and the generalized Ward identity. By using a generating functional for the statistics of the nonequilibrium system, we have obtained general formulae for calculating the current and the current fluctuations in the presence of arbitrary time-dependent potentials. As demonstration of application, we have studied the interaction effects on the finite frequency noise for electron resonant tunneling through an Anderson impurity, and obtained an analytical equation for the interaction effect on the finite frequency current noise within the Hartree approximation, which is an extension of the previous results obtained by Hershfield on zero frequency shot noise.

Spin interference and Fano effect in electron transport through a mesoscopic ring side-coupled with a quantum dot

We investigate the electron transport through a mesoscopic ring side-coupled with a quantum dot(QD) in the presence of Rashba spin-orbit(SO) interaction. It is shown that both the Fano resonance and the spin interference effects play important roles in the electron transport properties. As the QD level is around the Fermi energy, the total conductance shows typical Fano resonance line shape. By applying an electrical gate voltage to the QD, the total transmission through the system can be strongly modulated. By threading the mesoscopic ring with a magnetic flux, the time-reversal symmetry of the system is broken, and a spin polarized current can be obtained even though the incident current is unpolarized.

Spin Helix of Magnetic Impurities in Two-dimensional Helical Metal

We analyze the Ruderman-Kettel-Kasuya-Yosida(RKKY) interaction between magnetic impurities embedded in the helical metal on the surface of three-dimensional topological insulators. Apart from the conventional RKKY terms, the spin-momentum locking of conduction electrons also leads to a significant Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction between impurity spins. For a chain of magnetic impurities, the DM term can result in single-handed spin helix on the surface. The handedness of spin helix is locked with the sign of Fermi velocity of the emergent Dirac fermions on the surface. We also show the polarization of impurity spins can be controlled via electric voltage for dilute magnetic impurity concentration.

Quantum phase transition and underscreened Kondo effect in electron transport through parallel double quantum dots

We investigate electronic transport through parallel double quantum dot(DQD) system with strong on-site Coulomb interaction and capacitive interdot coupling. By applying numerical renormalization group(NRG) method, the ground state of the system and the transmission probability at zero temperature have been obtained. For a system of quantum dots with degenerate energy levels and small interdot tunnel coupling, the spin correlations between the DQDs is ferromagnetic, and the ground state of the system is a spin 1 triplet state. The linear conductance will reach the unitary limit ($2e^2/h$) due to the underscreened Kondo effect at low temperature. As the interdot tunnel coupling increases, there is a quantum phase transition from ferromagnetic to anti-ferromagnetic spin correlation in DQDs and the linear conductance is strongly suppressed.

Modular co-evolution of metabolic networks

The architecture of biological networks has been reported to exhibit high level of modularity, and to some extent, topological modules of networks overlap with known functional modules. However, how the modular topology of the molecular network affects the evolution of its member proteins remains unclear. In this work, the functional and evolutionary modularity of Homo sapiens (H. sapiens) metabolic network were investigated from a topological point of view. Network decomposition shows that the metabolic network is organized in a highly modular core-periphery way, in which the core modules are tightly linked together and perform basic metabolism functions, whereas the periphery modules only interact with few modules and accomplish relatively independent and specialized functions. Moreover, over half of the modules exhibit co-evolutionary feature and belong to specific evolutionary ages. Peripheral modules tend to evolve more cohesively and faster than core modules do. The correlation between functional, evolutionary and topological modularity suggests that the evolutionary history and functional requirements of metabolic systems have been imprinted in the architecture of metabolic networks. Such systems level analysis could demonstrate how the evolution of genes may be placed in a genome-scale network context, giving a novel perspective on molecular evolution.

Spin-orbit coupling effect on the persistent currents in mesoscopic ring with an Anderson impurity

Based on the finite $U$ slave boson method, we have investigated the effect of Rashba spin-orbit(SO) coupling on the persistent charge and spin currents in mesoscopic ring with an Anderson impurity. It is shown that the Kondo effect will decrease the magnitude of the persistent charge and spin currents in this side-coupled Anderson impurity case. In the presence of SO coupling, the persistent currents change drastically and oscillate with the strength of SO coupling. The SO coupling will suppress the Kondo effect and restore the abrupt jumps of the persistent currents. It is also found that a persistent spin current circulating the ring can exist even without the charge current in this system.

Fano resonance in electron transport through parallel double quantum dots in the Kondo regime

Electron transport through parallel double quantum dot system with interdot tunneling and strong on-site Coulomb interaction is studied in the Kondo regime by using the finite-$U$ slave boson technique. For a system of quantum dots with degenerate energy levels, the linear conductance reaches the unitary limit ($2e^2/h$) due to the Kondo effect at low temperature when the interdot tunneling is absent. As the interdot tunneling amplitude increases, the conductance decreases in the singly occupied regime and a conductance plateau structure appears. In the crossover to the doubly occupied regime, the conductance increases to reach the maximum value of $G=2e^2/h$. For parallel double dots with different energy levels, we show that the interference effect plays an important role in the electron transport. The linear conductance is shown to have an asymmetric line shape of the Fano resonance as a function of gate voltage.

Ising transition in dimerized XY quantum spin chain

In the present paper, we proposed a simple spin-1/2 model which provides a exactly solvable example to study the Ising criticality with central charge c=1/2. By mapping it onto the real Majorana fermions, the Ising critical behavior is explored explicitly, although its bosonized form is not the double frequency sine-Gordon model.

The Ising Transition in the double-frequency sine-Gordon model

In the present paper we utilize the renormalization group(RG) technique to analyse the Ising critical behavior in the double frequency sine-Gordon model. The one-loop RG equations obtained show unambiguously that there exist two Ising critical points besides the trivial Gaussian fixed point. The topology of the RG flows is obtained as well.
