Multiparticle azimuthal cumulants in p+Pb collisions from a multiphase transport model

A new subevent cumulant method was recently developed, which can significantly reduce the non-flow contributions in long-range correlations for small systems compared to the standard cumulant method. In this work, we study multi-particle cumulants in $p$+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} = 5.02$ TeV with a multiphase transport model (AMPT), including two- and four-particle cumulants ($c_{2}\{2\}$ and $c_{2}\{4\}$) and symmetric cumulants [SC(2, 3) and SC(2, 4)]. Our numerical results show that $v_{2}\{2\}$ is consistent with the experimental data, while the magnitude of $c_{2}\{4\}$ is smaller than the experimental data, which may indicate either the collectivity is underestimated or some dynamical fluctuations are absent in the AMPT model. For the symmetric cumulants, we find that the results from the standard cumulant method are consistent with the experimental data, but those from the subevent cumulant method show different behaviors. The results indicate that the measurements from the standard cumulant method are contaminated by non-flow effects, especially when the number of produced particles is small. The subevent cumulant method is a better tool to explore the $real$ collectivity in small systems.

Overall momentum balance and redistribution of the lost energy in asymmetric dijet events in 2.76~ATeV Pb-Pb collisions with a multi-phase transport model

The overall transverse momentum balance and the redistribution of the lost energy from hard jets for asymmetric dijet events in PbPb collisions at 2.76~ATeV at the LHC is studied within A Multi-Phase Transport (AMPT) model. A detailed analysis is performed for the projected transverse momentum $\langle \slashed{p}_{T}^{||} \rangle$ contributed from the final charged hadrons carrying different transverse momenta and emitted from different angular directions. We find that the transverse momentum projection $\langle \slashed{p}_{T}^{||} \rangle $ in the leading jet direction is mainly contributed by hard hadrons ($p_T > 8.0$~GeV/$c$) in both peripheral and central PbPb collisions, while the opposite direction in central collisions is dominated by soft hadrons ($p_T = 0.5$-$2.0$~GeV/$c$). The study of in-cone and out-of-cone contributions to $\langle \slashed{p}_{T}^{||} \rangle$ shows that these soft hadrons are mostly emitted at large angles away from the dijet axis. Our AMPT calculation is in qualitative agreement with the CMS measurements and the primary mechanism for the energy transported to large angles in the AMPT model is the elastic scattering at the partonic stage. Future studies including also inelastic processes should be helpful in understanding the overestimation of the magnitudes of in-cone and out-of-cone imbalances from our AMPT calculations, and shed light on different roles played by radiative and collisional processes in the redistribution of the lost energy from hard jets.

A remark on the sign change of the four-particle azimuthal cumulant in small systems

The azimuthal cumulants, $c_2\{2\}$ and $c_2\{4\}$, originating from the global conservation of transverse momentum in the presence of hydro-like elliptic flow are calculated. We observe the sign change of $c_2\{4\}$ for small number of produced particles. This is in a qualitative agreement with the recent ATLAS measurement of multi-particle azimuthal correlations with the subevent cumulant method.

Predictions for isobaric collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{\rm NN}}}$ = 200 GeV from a multiphase transport model

The isobaric collisions of $^{96}_{44}$Ru + $^{96}_{44}$Ru and $^{96}_{40}$Zr + $^{96}_{40}$Zr have recently been proposed to discern the charge separation signal of the chiral magnetic effect (CME). In this article, we employ the string melting version of a multiphase transport model to predict various charged-particle observables, including $dN/dη$, $p_T$ spectra, elliptic flow ($v_2$), and particularly possible CME signals in Ru + Ru and Zr + Zr collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{\rm NN}}}$ = 200 GeV. Two sets of the nuclear structure parametrization have been explored, and the difference between the two isobaric collisions appears to be small, in terms of $dN/dη$, $p_T$ spectra, and $v_2$ for charged particles. We mimic the CME by introducing an initial charge separation that is proportional to the magnetic field produced in the collision, and study how the final-state interactions affect the CME observables. The relative difference in the CME signal between the two isobaric collisions is found to be robust, insensitive to the final-state interactions.

Investigating the quark flavor dependence of the chiral magnetic effect with a multiphase transport model

Because the properties of the QCD phase transition and the chiral magnetic effect (CME) depend on the number of quark flavors ($N_{f}$) and quark mass, relativistic heavy-ion collisions provide a natural environment to investigate the flavor features if quark deconfinement occurs. We introduce an initial two-flavor or three-flavor dipole charge separation into a multiphase transport (AMPT) model to investigate the flavor dependence of the CME. By taking advantage of the recent ALICE data of charge azimuthal correlations with identified hadrons, we attempt to disentangle two-flavor and three-flavor CME scenarios in Pb+Pb collisions at 2.76 TeV. We find that the experimental data show a certain potential to distinguish the two scenarios, therefore we further suggest to collect more data to clarify the possible flavor dependence in future experiments.

Electromagnetic fields in small systems from a multiphase transport model

We calculate the electromagnetic fields generated in small systems by using a multiphase transport (AMPT) model. Compared to $A+A$ collisions, we find that the absolute electric and magnetic fields are not small in $p$+Au and $d$+Au collisions at energies available at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider and in $p$+Pb collisions at energies available at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. We study the centrality dependencies and the spatial distributions of electromagnetic fields. We further investigate the azimuthal fluctuations of the magnetic field and its correlation with the fluctuating geometry using event-by-event simulations. We find that the azimuthal correlation $\left\langle \cos2(Ψ_B - Ψ_{2}) \right\rangle$ between the magnetic field direction and the second harmonic participant plane is almost zero in small systems with high multiplicities, but not in those with low multiplicities. This indicates that the charge azimuthal correlation, $\left\langle \cos(ϕ_α+ϕ_β - 2Ψ_{RP}) \right\rangle$, is not a valid probe to study the chiral magnetic effect (CME) in small systems with high multiplicities. However, we suggest searching for possible CME effects in small systems with low multiplicities.

Elliptic flow coefficients from transverse momentum conservation

We calculate the $k$-particle ($k=2,4,6,8$) azimuthal cumulants resulting from the conservation of transverse momentum. We find that $c_2\{k\}>0$ and depending on the transverse momenta, $c_2\{k\}$ can reach substantial values even for a relatively large number of particles. The impact of our results on the understanding of the onset of collectivity in small systems is emphasized.

Chiral magnetic effect in isobaric collisions

We give a numerical simulation of the generation of the magnetic field and the charge-separation signal due to the chiral magnetic effect (CME) --- the induction of an electric current by the magnetic field in a parity-odd matter --- in the collisions of isobaric nuclei, $^{96}_{44}$Ru + $^{96}_{44}$Ru and $^{96}_{40}$Zr + $^{96}_{40}$Zr, at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=200$ GeV. We show that such collisions provide an ideal tool to disentangle the CME signal from the possible elliptic-flow driven background effects. We also discuss some other effects that can be tested by using the isobaric collisions.

Test the chiral magnetic effect with isobaric collisions

The quark-gluon matter produced in relativistic heavy-ion collisions may contain local domains in which P and CP symmetries are not preserved. When coupled with an external magnetic field, such P- and CP-odd domains will generate electric currents along the magnetic field --- a phenomenon called the chiral magnetic effect (CME). Recently, the STAR Collaboration at RHIC and the ALICE Collaboration at the LHC released data of charge-dependent azimuthal-angle correlators with features consistent with the CME expectation. However, the experimental observable is contaminated with significant background contributions from elliptic-flow-driven effects, which makes the interpretation of the data ambiguous. In this Letter, we show that the collisions of isobaric nuclei, $^{96}_{44}$Ru + $^{96}_{44}$Ru and $^{96}_{40}$Zr + $^{96}_{40}$Zr, provide an ideal tool to disentangle the CME signal from the background effects. Our simulation demonstrates that the two collision types at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=200$ GeV have more than $10\%$ difference in the CME signal and less than $2\%$ difference in the elliptic-flow-driven backgrounds for the centrality range of $20-60\%$.

Predictions for $\sqrt {s_{NN}}=5.02$ TeV Pb+Pb Collisions from a Multi-Phase Transport Model

We present predictions from the string melting version of a multi-phase transport model on various observables in Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt {s_{NN}}=5.02$ TeV. We use the same version of the model as an earlier study that reasonably reproduced dN/dy, $p_{\rm T}$-spectra and elliptic flow of charged pions and kaons at low-$p_{\rm T}$ for central and semi-central heavy ion collisions at 200 GeV and 2.76 TeV. While we compare with the already-available centrality dependence data on charged particle $dN/dη$ at mid-pseudorapidity in Pb+Pb collisions at 5.02 TeV, we make predictions on identified particle dN/dy, $p_{\rm T}$-spectra, azimuthal anisotropies $v_n (n=2,3,4)$, and factorization ratios $r_{n}(η^{a},η^{b}) (n=2,3)$ for longitudinal correlations.

Rapidity bin multiplicity correlations from a multi-phase transport model

The central-arbitrary bin and forward-backward bin multiplicity correlation patterns for Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} $= $7.7-62.4$ GeV are investigated within a multi-phase transport (AMPT) model. An interesting observation is that for $\sqrt{s_{NN}} <19.6$ GeV Au+Au collisions, these two correlation patterns both have an increase with the pseudorapidity gap, while for $\sqrt{s_{NN}} >19.6$ GeV Au+Au collisions, they decrease. We mainly discuss the influence of different evolution stages of collision system on the central-arbitrary bin correlations, such as the initial conditions, partonic scatterings, hadronization scheme and hadronic scatterings. Our results show that the central-arbitrary bin multiplicity correlations have different responses to partonic phase and hadronic phase, which can be suggested as a good probe to explore the dynamical evolution mechanism of the hot dense matter in high-energy heavy-ion collisions.

Possible observables for the chiral electric separation effect in Cu + Au collisions

The quark-gluon plasma (QGP) generated in relativistic heavy-ion collisions could be locally parity-odd. In parity-odd QGP, the electric field may induce a chiral current which is called the chiral electric separation effect (CESE). We propose two possible observables for CESE in Cu + Au collisions: The first one is the correlation $ζ_{αβ}=\langle \cos[2(ϕ_α+ϕ_β-2Ψ_{\rm RP})]\rangle$; the second one is the charge-dependent event-plane angle $Ψ^{q}_2$ with $q=\pm$ being charge. Nonzero $Δζ=ζ_{opp}-ζ_{same}$ and $ΔΨ=\langle|Ψ_2^+-Ψ_2^-|\rangle$ may signal the CESE in Cu + Au collisions. Within a multiphase transport model, we study how the final state interaction affects these observables. We find that the correlation $γ_{αβ}=\langle\cos(ϕ_α+ϕ_β-Ψ_{\rm RP})\rangle$ is sensitive to the out-of-plane charge separation caused by the chiral magnetic effect and to the in-plane charge separation caused by the in-plane electric field, but it is not sensitive to the CESE. On the other hand, $Δζ$ and $ΔΨ$ are sensitive to the CESE. Therefore, we suggest that the future experiments measure the above observables in Cu+Au collisions in order to disentangle different chiral and charge separation mechanisms.

Longitudinal Decorrelation of Anisotropic Flows in Heavy-ion Collisions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider

Fluctuations in the initial transverse energy-density distribution lead to anisotropic flows as observed in central high-energy heavy-ion collisions. Studies of longitudinal fluctuations of the anisotropic flows can shed further light on the initial conditions and dynamical evolution of the hot quark-gluon matter in these collisions. Correlations between anisotropic flows with varying pseudorapidity gaps in Pb+Pb collisions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider are investigated using both an event-by-event (3+1)-D ideal hydrodynamical model with fluctuating initial conditions and the a multiphase transport (AMPT) Monte Carlo model for high-energy heavy-ion collisions. Anisotropic flows at different pseudorapidities are found to become significantly decorrelated with increasing pseudo-rapidity gaps due to longitudinal fluctuations in the initial states of heavy-ion collisions. The longitudinal correlation of the elliptic flow shows a strong centrality dependence while the correlation of the triangular flow is independent of the centrality. Longitudinal fluctuations as a source of the decorrelation are further shown to consist of a twist or gradual rotation in flow angles between the forward and backward direction and additional fluctuations on top of the twist. Within the AMPT model, longitudinal correlations of anisotropic flows are also found to depend on the value of partonic cross sections. The implicatiosn of constraining the initial conditions and shear viscosity to entropy density ratio of the partonic matter in high-energy heavy-ion collisions are also discussed.

Rapidity dependence of elliptic and triangular flow in proton-nucleus collisions from collective dynamics

The rapidity dependence of elliptic, $v_2$, and triangular, $v_3$, flow coefficients in proton-nucleus (p+A) collisions is predicted in hydrodynamics and in a multi-phase transport model (AMPT). We find that $v_n$ ($n=2,3$) on a nucleus side is significantly larger than on a proton side and the ratio between the two, $v_n^{\rm Pb}/v_n^{\rm p}$, weekly depends on the transverse momentum of produced particles.

Elliptic and triangular flow in p+Pb and peripheral Pb+Pb collisions from parton scatterings

Using a multiphase transport model (AMPT) we calculate the elliptic, $v_2$, and triangular, $v_3$, Fourier coefficients of the two-particle azimuthal correlation function in proton-nucleus (p+Pb) and peripheral nucleus-nucleus (Pb+Pb) collisions. Our results for $v_3$ are in a good agreement with the CMS data collected at the Large Hadron Collider. The $v_2$ coefficient is very well described in p+Pb collisions and is underestimated for higher transverse momenta in Pb+Pb interactions. The characteristic mass ordering of $v_2$ in p+Pb is reproduced whereas for $v_3$ this effect is not observed. We further predict the pseudorapidity dependence of $v_2$ and $v_3$ in p+Pb and observe that both are increasing when going from a proton side to a Pb-nucleus side. Predictions for the higher order Fourier coefficients, $v_4$ and $v_5$, in p+Pb are also presented.

Charge separation with fluctuating domains in relativistic heavy-ion collisions

Charge separation induced by the chiral magnetic effect suggested that some ${\cal P}$- or ${\cal CP}$-odd metastable domains could be produced in a QCD vacuum in the early stage of relativistic heavy-ion collisions. Based on a multi-phase transport model, our results suggest that a domain-based scenario with final state interactions can describe the solenoidal tracker at RHIC detector (STAR) measurements of both same- and opposite-charge azimuthal angle correlations, $<\cos(ϕ_α+ϕ_β)>$, in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{\rm NN}}}=200$ GeV. The occupancy factor of the total volume of domains over the fireball volume is small, which indicates that the size and number of metastable domains should be relatively small in the early stage of a quark-gluon plasma.

Azimuthal anisotropies of reconstructed jets in Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{\rm NN}}}$ = 2.76 TeV in a multiphase transport model

Azimuthal anisotropies of reconstructed jets [$v_{n}^{jet} (n=2, 3)$] have been investigated in Pb+Pb collisions at the center of mass energy $\sqrt{s_{_{\rm NN}}}$ = 2.76 TeV within a framework of a multiphase transport (AMPT) model. The $v_{2}^{jet}$ is in good agreement with the recent ATLAS data. However, the $v_{3}^{jet}$ shows a smaller magnitude than $v_{2}^{jet}$, and approaches zero at a larger transverse momentum. It is attributed to the path-length dependence in which the jet energy loss fraction depends on the azimuthal angles with respect to different orders of event planes. The ratio $v_{n}^{jet}/\varepsilon_{n}$ increases from peripheral to noncentral collisions, and $v_{n}^{jet}$ increases with the initial spatial asymmetry ($\varepsilon_{n}$) for a given centrality bin. These behaviors indicate that the $v_{n}^{jet}$ is produced by the strong interactions between jet and the partonic medium with different initial geometry shapes. Therefore, azimuthal anisotropies of reconstructed jet are proposed as a good probe to study the initial spatial fluctuations, which are expected to provide constraints on the path-length dependence of jet quenching models.
