Evidence for a full energy gap for nickel-pnictide LaNiAsO_{1-x}F_x superconductors by ^{75}As nuclear quadrupole resonance

We report systematic ^{75}As-NQR and ^{139}La-NMR studies on nickel-pnictide superconductors LaNiAsO_{1-x}F_x (x=0, 0.06, 0.10 and 0.12). The spin lattice relaxation rate 1/T_1 decreases below T_c with a well-defined coherence peak and follows an exponential decay at low temperatures. This result indicates that the superconducting gap is fully opened, and is strikingly different from that observed in iron-pnictide analogs. In the normal state, 1/T_1T is constant in the temperature range T_c \sim 4 K < T <10 K for all compounds and up to T=250 K for x=0 and 0.06, which indicates weak electron correlations and is also different from the iron analog. We argue that the differences between the iron and nickel pnictides arise from the different electronic band structure. Our results highlight the importance of the peculiar Fermi-surface topology in iron-pnictides.

Superconducting state in the non-centrosymmetric Mg_{9.3}Ir_{19}B_{16.7} and Mg_{10.5}Ir_{19}B_{17.1} revealed by NMR

We report ^{11}B NMR measurements in non-centrosymmetric superconductors Mg_{9.3}Ir_{19}B_{16.7} (T_c=5.8 K) and Mg_{10.5}Ir_{19}B_{17.1} (T_c=4.8 K). The spin lattice relaxation rate and the Knight shift indicate that the Cooper pairs are predominantly in the spin-singlet state with an isotropic gap. However, Mg_{10.5}Ir_{19}B_{17.1} is found to have more defects and the spin susceptibility remains finite even in the zero-temperature limit. We interpret this result as that the defects enhance the spin-orbit coupling and bring about more spin-triplet component.

Anisotropic spin fluctuations and multiple superconducting gaps in hole-doped Ba_0.7K_0.3Fe_2As_2: NMR in a single crystal

We report the first ^{75}As-NMR study on a single crystal of the hole-doped iron-pnictide superconductor Ba_{0.7}K_{0.3}Fe_2As_{2} (T_c = 31.5 K). We find that the Fe antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations are anisotropic and are weaker compared to underdoped copper-oxides or cobalt-oxide superconductors. The spin lattice relaxation rate 1/T_1 decreases below T_c with no coherence peak and shows a step-wise variation at low temperatures, which is indicative of multiple superconducting gaps, as in the electron-doped Pr(La)FeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$. Furthermore, no evidence was obtained for a microscopic coexistence of a long-range magnetic and superconductivity.

Measurement of electron correlations in LixCoO2 (x=0.0 - 0.35) using 59Co nuclear magnetic resonance and nuclear quadrupole resonance techniques

CoO2 is the parent compound for the superconductor NaxCoO2\cdot1.3H2O and was widely believed to be a Mott insulator. We performed 59Co nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) studies on LixCoO2 (x = 0.35, 0.25, 0.12, and 0.0) to uncover the electronic state and spin correlations in this series of compounds which was recently obtained through electrochemical de-intercalation of Li from pristine LiCoO2. We find that although the antiferromagnetic spin correlations systematically increase with decreasing Li-content (x), the end member, CoO2 is a non-correlated metal that well satisfies the Korringa relation for a Fermi liquid. Thus, CoO2 is not simply located at the limit of x->0 for AxCoO2 (A = Li, Na) compounds. The disappearance of the electron correlations in CoO2 is due to the three dimensionality of the compound which is in contrast to the highly two dimensional structure of AxCoO2.

Two superconducting gaps in LaFeAsO0.92F0.08 revealed by 75As nuclear quadrupole resonance

We report $^{75}$As nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) studies on superconducting oxypnictide LaFeAsO$_{0.92}$F$_{0.08}$ ($T_{\rm c}$ = 23 K). The temperature dependence of the spin lattice relaxation rate (1/$T_1$) decreases below $T_{\rm c}$ without a coherence (Hebel-Slichter) peak and shows a temperature dependence that is not simple power-law nor exponential. We show that the result can be understood in terms of two superconducting gaps of either $d$- or ${\pm}s$-wave symmetry, with the larger gap $Δ_1\sim 4 k_{\rm B}T_{\rm c}$ and the smaller one $Δ_2 \sim 1.5 k_{\rm B}T_{\rm c}$. Our result suggests that the multiple-gaps feature is universal in the oxypnictides superconductors, which is probably associated with the multiple electronic bands structure in this new class of materials. We also find that 1/$T_1T$ above $T_{\rm c}$ increases with decreasing temperature, which suggests weak magnetic fluctuations in the normal state.

Hydration-induced anisotropic spin fluctuations in Na_{x}CoO_{2}\cdot1.3H_{2}O superconductor

We report ^{59}Co NMR studies in single crystals of cobalt oxide superconductor Na_{0.42}CoO_{2}\cdot1.3H_{2}O (T_c=4.25K) and its parent compound Na_{0.42}CoO_{2}. We find that both the magnitude and the temperature (T) dependence of the Knight shifts are identical in the two compounds above T_c. The spin-lattice relaxation rate (1/T_1) is also identical above T_0 \sim60 K for both compounds. Below T_0, the unhydrated sample is found to be a non-correlated metal that well conforms to Fermi liquid theory, while spin fluctuations develop in the superconductor. These results indicate that water intercalation does not change the density of states but its primary role is to bring about spin fluctuations. Our result shows that, in the hydrated superconducting compound, the in-plane spin fluctuation around finite wave vector is much stronger than that along the c-axis, which indicates that the spin correlation is quasi-two-dimensional.

Spin-singlet superconductivity with multiple gaps in PrO0.89F0.11FeAs

Since the discovery of high transition-temperature (Tc) superconductivity in copper oxides two decades ago, continuous efforts have been devoted to searching for similar phenomenon in other compounds. With the exception of MgB2 (Tc =39 K), however, Tc is generally far lower than desired. Recently, breakthrough has been made in a new class of oxypnictide compounds. Following the initial discovery of superconductivity in LaO1-x FxFeAs (Tc =26 K), Tc onset has been raised to 55 K in ReO1-xFxFeAs (Re: Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm). Meanwhile, unravelling the nature of the energy associated with the formation of current-carrying pairs (Cooper pairs), referred to as the superconducting energy gap, is the first and vital step towards understanding why the superconductivity occurs at such high temperature and is also important for finding superconductors with still higher Tc. Here we show that, on the basis of the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements in PrO0.89F0.11FeAs (Tc =45 K), the Cooper pair is in the spin-singlet state (two spins are anti-paralleled), with two energy gaps opening below Tc. The results strongly suggest the existence of nodes (zeros) in the gap. None of superconductors known to date has such unique gap features, although copper-oxides and MgB2 share part of them.

Spin Triplet Superconducting State due to Broken Inversion Symmetry in Li_2Pt_3B

We report ^{11}B and ^{195}Pt NMR measurements in non-centrosymmetric superconductor Li_2Pt_3B. We find that the spin susceptibility measured by the Knight shift remains unchanged across the superconducting transition temperature T_c. With decreasing temperature (T) below T_c, the spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T_1 decreases with no coherence peak and is in proportion to T^3. These results indicate that the Cooper pair is in the spin-triplet state and that there exist line nodes in the superconducting gap function. They are in sharp contrast with those in the isostructural Li_2Pd_3B which is a spin-singlet, s-wave superconductor, and are ascribed to the enhanced spin-orbit coupling due to the lack of spatial inversion symmetry. Our finding points to a new paradigm where exotic superconductivity arises in the absence of strong electron-electron correlations.

Evidence for Point Nodes in the Superconducting Gap Function in the Filled Skutterudite Heavy-Fermion Compound PrOs4Sb12: 123Sb-NQR Study under Pressure

We report $^{123}$Sb nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) measurements of the filled skutterudite heavy-fermion superconductor PrOs$_4$Sb$_{12}$ under high pressures of 1.91 and 2.34 GPa. The temperature dependence of NQR frequency and the spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ indicate that the crystal-electric-field splitting $Δ_{\rm CEF}$ between the ground state $Γ_1$ singlet and the first excited state $Γ_4^{(2)}$ triplet decreases with increasing pressure. The 1/$T_1$ below $T_c$ = 1.55 K at $P$ = 1.91 GPa shows a power-law temperature variation and is proportional to $T^5$ at temperatures considerably below $T_c$, which indicates the existence of point nodes in the superconducting gap function. The data can be well fitted by the gap model $Δ(θ)=Δ_0\sinθ$ with $Δ_0$ = 3.08$k_{\rm B}T_{\rm c}$. The relation between the superconductivity and the quadrupole fluctuations associated with the $Γ_4^{(2)}$ state is discussed.

Impurity Effect as a Probe for the Gap Function in the Filled Skutterudite Compound Superconductor PrOs$_{4}$Sb$_{12}$: Sb-NQR Study

We have carried out nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) measurements in the filled skutterudite compounds Pr(Os$_{1-x}$Ru$_x$)$_4$Sb$_{12}$ ($x=0.1, 0.2$), in order to gain insights into the symmetry of the superconducting gap function. Upon replacing Os with Ru, the spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ becomes proportional to temperature ($T$) at low $T$ far below $T_c$, and the magnitude of $(1/T_1T)_{low-T}$ increases with increasing Ru content. These results indicate that a finite density of states is induced at the Fermi level by the impurity, and thus suggest that there exist nodes in the gap function of PrOs$_{4}$Sb$_{12}$.

Spin singlet pairing in the superconducting state of NaxCoO2\cdot1.3H2O: evidence from a ^{59}Co Knight shift in a single crystal

We report a ^{59}Co Knight shift measurement in a single crystal of the cobalt oxide superconductor Na_{x}CoO_2\cdot1.3H_2O (T_c=4.25 K). We find that the shift due to the spin susceptibility, K^s, is substantially large and anisotropic, with the spin shift along the a-axis K^s_a being two times that along the c-axis K^s_c. The shift decreases with decreasing temperature (T) down to T\sim100 K, then becomes a constant until superconductivity sets in. Both K^s_a and K^s_c decrease below T_c. Our results indicate unambiguously that the electron pairing in the superconducting state is in the spin singlet form.

Field-Induced Ferromagnetic Order and Colossal Magnetoresistance in La_{1.2}Sr_{1.8}Mn_2O_7: a ^{139}La NMR study

In order to gain insights into the origin of colossal magneto-resistance (CMR) in manganese oxides, we performed a ^{139}La NMR study in the double-layered compound La_{1.2}Sr_{1.8}Mn_2O_7. We find that above the Curie temperature T_C=126 K, applying a magnetic field induces a long-range ferromagnetic order that persists up to T=330 K. The critical field at which the induced magnetic moment is saturated coincides with the field at which the CMR effect reaches to a maximum. Our results therefore indicate that the CMR observed above T_C in this compound is due to the field-induced ferromagnetism that produces a metallic state via the double exchange interaction.

Na content dependence of superconductivity and the spin correlations in Na_{x}CoO_{2}\cdot 1.3H_{2}O

We report systematic measurements using the ^{59}Co nuclear quadrupole resonance(NQR) technique on the cobalt oxide superconductors Na_{x}CoO_{2}\cdot 1.3H_{2}O over a wide Na content range x=0.25\sim 0.34. We find that T_c increases with decreasing x but reaches to a plateau for x \leq0.28. In the sample with x \sim 0.26, the spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T_1 shows a T^3 variation below T_c and down to T\sim T_c/6, which unambiguously indicates the presence of line nodes in the superconducting (SC) gap function. However, for larger or smaller x, 1/T_1 deviates from the T^3 variation below T\sim 2 K even though the T_c (\sim 4.7 K) is similar, which suggests an unusual evolution of the SC state. In the normal state, the spin correlations at a finite wave vector become stronger upon decreasing x, and the density of states at the Fermi level increases with decreasing x, which can be understood in terms of a single-orbital picture suggested on the basis of LDA calculation.

Novel Phase Transition Near the Quantum Critical Point in the Filled-Skutterudite Compound CeOs4Sb12: an Sb-NQR Study

We report on a novel phase transition at $T$ = 0.9 K in the Ce-based filled-skutterudite compound CeOs$_{4}$Sb$_{12}$ via measurements of the nuclear-spin lattice relaxation rate $1/T_{1}$ and nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) spectrum of Sb nuclei. The temperature ($T$) dependence of $1/T_1$ behaves as if approaching closely an antiferromagnetic (AFM) quantum critical point (QCP), following the relation $1/T_{1}\propto T/(T-T_{\rm N})^{1/2}$ with $T_{\rm N} = 0.06$ K in the range of $T=1.3-25$ K. The onset of either the spin-density-wave (SDW) or charge-density-wave (CDW) order at $T_{\rm 0} = 0.9$ K, that is, of the first order, is evidenced by a broadening of the NQR spectrum and a marked reduction in $1/T_1$ just below $T_{\rm 0}$. The $f$-electron-derived correlated band realized in CeOs$_{4}$Sb$_{12}$ is demonstrated to give rise to the novel phase transition on the verge of AFM QCP.

Superconductivity of the Ternary Boride Li_2Pd_3B Probed by ^{11}B NMR

We report a ^{11}B NMR measurement on the recently discovered superconductor Li_2Pd_3B. The nuclear spin lattice relaxation rate 1/T_1 shows a well-defined coherence peak just below T_c (H=1.46 T)=5.7 K, and the spin susceptibility measured by the Knight shift also decreases below T_c. These results indicate that the superconductivity is of conventional nature, with an isotropic gap. Our results also suggest that the $p$-electrons of boron and the d-electrons of palladium that hybridize with boron $p$-electrons are primarily responsible for the superconductivity.

Critical point and the nature of the pseudogap of single-layered copper-oxide Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2-x}$La$_{x}$CuO$_{6+δ}$ superconductors

We apply strong magnetic fields of H=28.5 \sim 43 T to suppress superconductivity (SC) in the cuprates Bi_{2}Sr_{2-x}La_xCuO_{6+δ} (x=0.65, 0.40, 0.25, 0.15 and 0), and investigate the low temperature (T) normal state by ^{63}Cu nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate (1/T_1) measurements. We find that the pseudogap (PG) phase persists deep inside the overdoped region but terminates at x \sim 0.05 that corresponds to the hole doping concentration of approximately 0.21. Beyond this critical point, the normal state is a Fermi liquid characterized by the T_1T=const relation. A comparison of the superconducting state with the H-induced normal state in the x=0.40 (T_c = 32 K) sample indicates that there remains substantial part of the Fermi surface even in the fully-developed PG state, which suggests that the PG and SC are coexisting matters.

Enhancing the Superconducting Transition Temperature in the Absence of Spin Correlations in Heavy Fermion Compound CeIrIn$_5$

We report on a pressure($P$)-induced evolution of superconductivity and spin correlations in CeIrIn$_5$ via the $^{115}$In nuclear-spin-lattice-relaxation rate measurements. We find that applying pressure suppresses dramatically the antiferromagnetic fluctuations that are strong at ambient pressure. At $P$ = 2.1 GPa, $T_{\rm c}$ increases to $T_{\rm c}$ = 0.8 K that is twice $T_{\rm c}$($P$ = 0 GPa), in the background of Fermi liquid state. This is in sharp contrast with the previous case in which negative, chemical pressure (replacing Ir with Rh) enhances magnetic interaction and increases $T_{\rm c}$. Our results suggest that multiple mechanisms work to produce superconductivity in the same compound CeIrIn$_5$.

New Superconducting and Magnetic Phases Emerge on the Verge of Antiferromagnetism in CeIn$_3$

We report the discovery of new superconducting and novel magnetic phases in CeIn$_3$ on the verge of antiferromagnetism (AFM) under pressure ($P$) through the In-nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) measurements. We have found a $P$-induced phase separation of AFM and paramagnetism (PM) without any trace for a quantum phase transition in CeIn$_3$. A new type of superconductivity (SC) was found in $P=2.28-2.5$ GPa to coexist with AFM that is magnetically separated from PM where the heavy fermion SC takes place. We propose that the magnetic excitations such as spin-density fluctuations induced by the first-order magnetic phase transition might mediate attractive interaction to form Cooper pairs.
