Defects in Jackiw-Teitelboim Quantum Gravity

We classify and study defects in 2d Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity. We show these are holographically described by a deformation of the Schwarzian theory where the reparametrization mode is integrated over different coadjoint orbits of the Virasoro group. We show that the quantization of each coadjoint orbit is connected to 2d Liouville CFT between branes with insertions of Verlinde loop operators. We also propose an interpretation for the exceptional orbits. We use this perspective to solve these deformations of the Schwarzian theory, computing their partition function and correlators. In the process, we define two geometric observables: the horizon area operator $Φ_h$ and the geodesic length operator $L(γ)$. We show this procedure is structurally related to the deformation of the particle-on-a-group quantum mechanics by the addition of a chemical potential. As an example, we solve the low-energy theory of complex SYK with a U(1) symmetry and generalize to the non-abelian case.

An Inelastic Bound on Chaos

We study a generalization of the chaos bound that applies to out-of-time-ordered correlators between four different operators. We prove this bound under the same assumptions that apply for the usual chaos bound and extend it to non-hermitian operators. In a holographic theory, these correlators are controlled by inelastic scattering in the bulk and we comment on implications. In particular, for holographic theories the bound together with the equivalence principle suggests that gravity is the highest spin force, and the strongest one with that spin.

Expanding the Black Hole Interior: Partially Entangled Thermal States in SYK

We introduce a family of partially entangled thermal states in the SYK model that interpolates between the thermo-field double state and a pure (product) state. The states are prepared by a euclidean path integral describing the evolution over two euclidean time segments separated by a local scaling operator $\mathcal{O}$. We argue that the holographic dual of this class of states consists of two black holes with their interior regions connected via a domain wall, described by the worldline of a massive particle. We compute the size of the interior region and the entanglement entropy as a function of the scale dimension of $\mathcal{O}$ and the temperature of each black hole. We argue that the one-sided bulk reconstruction can access the interior region of the black hole.

Shockwave S-matrix from Schwarzian Quantum Mechanics

Schwarzian quantum mechanics describes the collective IR mode of the SYK model and captures key features of 2D black hole dynamics. Exact results for its correlation functions were obtained in JHEP {\bf 1708}, 136 (2017) [arXiv:1705.08408]. We compare these results with bulk gravity expectations. We find that the semi-classical limit of the out-of-time-order (OTO) four-point function exactly matches with the scattering amplitude obtained from the Dray-'t Hooft shockwave $\mathcal{S}$-matrix. We show that the two point function of heavy operators reduces to the semi-classical saddle-point of the Schwarzian action. We also explain a previously noted match between the OTO four point functions and 2D conformal blocks. Generalizations to higher-point functions, and applications, are discussed.

AGT/Z$_2$

We relate Liouville/Toda CFT correlators on Riemann surfaces with boundaries and cross-cap states to supersymmetric observables in four-dimensional N=2 gauge theories. Our construction naturally involves four-dimensional theories with fields defined on different Z$_2$ quotients of the sphere (hemisphere and projective space) but nevertheless interacting with each other. The six-dimensional origin is a Z$_2$ quotient of the setup giving rise to the usual AGT correspondence. To test the correspondence, we work out the RP$^4$ partition function of four-dimensional N=2 theories by combining a 3d lens space and a 4d hemisphere partition functions. The same technique reproduces known RP$^2$ partition functions in a form that lets us easily check two-dimensional Seiberg-like dualities on this nonorientable space. As a bonus we work out boundary and cross-cap wavefunctions in Toda CFT.

Veneziano Amplitude of Vasiliev Theory

We compute the four-point function of scalar operators in CFTs with weakly broken higher spin symmetry at arbitrary 't Hooft coupling. We use the known three-point functions in these theories, the Lorentzian OPE inversion formula and crossing to fix the result up to the addition of three functions of the cross ratios. These are given by contact Witten diagrams in AdS and manifest non-analyticity of the OPE data in spin. We use Schwinger-Dyson equations to show that such terms are absent in the large $N$ Chern-Simons matter theories. The result is that the OPE data is analytic in spin up to $J=0$.

Bounds on OPE Coefficients from Interference Effects in the Conformal Collider

We apply the average null energy condition to obtain upper bounds on the three-point function coefficients of stress tensors and a scalar operator, $\langle TT {\cal O } \rangle,$ in general CFTs. We also constrain the gravitational anomaly of $U(1)$ currents in four-dimensional CFTs, which are encoded in three-point functions of the form $\langle TT J \rangle$. In theories with a large $N$ AdS dual we translate these bounds into constraints on the coefficient of a higher derivative bulk term of the form $\int ϕ\hspace{.5mm} W^2 $. We speculate that these bounds also apply in de-Sitter. In this case our results constrain inflationary observables, such as the amplitude for chiral gravity waves that originate from higher derivative terms in the Lagrangian of the form $ϕ\hspace{.5mm}W W^*$.

Solving the Schwarzian via the Conformal Bootstrap

We obtain exact expressions for a general class of correlation functions in the 1D quantum mechanical model described by the Schwarzian action, that arises as the low energy limit of the SYK model. The answer takes the form of an integral of a momentum space amplitude obtained via a simple set of diagrammatic rules. The derivation relies on the precise equivalence between the 1D Schwarzian theory and a suitable large $c$ limit of 2D Virasoro CFT. The mapping from the 1D to the 2D theory is similar to the construction of kinematic space. We also compute the out-of-time ordered four point function. The momentum space amplitude in this case contains an extra factor in the form of a crossing kernel, or R-matrix, given by a 6j-symbol of SU(1,1). We argue that the R-matrix describes the gravitational scattering amplitude near the horizon of an AdS${}_2$ black hole. Finally, we discuss the generalization of some of our results to ${\cal N}=1$ and ${\cal N}=2$ supersymmetric Schwarzian QM.

A CFT Perspective on Gravitational Dressing and Bulk Locality

We revisit the construction of local bulk operators in AdS/CFT with special focus on gravitational dressing and its consequences for bulk locality. Specializing to 2+1-dimensions, we investigate these issues via the proposed identification between bulk operators and cross-cap boundary states. We obtain explicit expressions for correlation functions of bulk fields with boundary stress tensor insertions, and find that they are free of non-local branch cuts but do have non-local poles. We recover the HKLL recipe for restoring bulk locality for interacting fields as the outcome of a natural CFT crossing condition. We show that, in a suitable gauge, the cross-cap states solve the bulk wave equation for general background geometries, and satisfy a conformal Ward identity analogous to a soft graviton theorem, Virasoro symmetry, the large N conformal bootstrap and the uniformization theorem all play a key role in our derivations.

Non-equilibrium Lifshitz theory as a steady state of a full dynamical quantum system

In this work we analyze the validity of Lifshitz's theory for the case of non-equilibrium scenarios from a full quantum dynamical approach. We show that Lifshitz's framework for the study of the Casimir pressure is the result of considering the long-time regime (or steady state) of a well-defined fully quantized problem, subjected to initial conditions for the electromagnetic field interacting with real materials. For this, we implement the closed time path formalism developed in previous works to study the case of two half spaces (modeled as composite environments, consisting in quantum degrees of freedom plus thermal baths) interacting with the electromagnetic field. Starting from initial uncorrelated free subsystems, we solve the full time evolution, obtaining general expressions for the different contributions to the pressure that take part on the transient stage. Using the analytic properties of the retarded Green functions, we obtain the long-time limit of these contributions to the total Casimir pressure. We show that, in the steady state, only the baths' contribute, in agreement with the results of previous works, where this was assumed without justification. We also study in detail the physics of the initial conditions' contribution and the concept of modified vacuum modes, giving insights about in which situations one would expect a non vanishing contribution at the steady state of a non-equilibrium scenario. This would be the case when considering finite width slabs instead of half-spaces.

Dynamics of an Acoustic Black Hole as an Open Quantum System

We studied the process of decoherence induced by the presence of an environment in acoustic black holes, using the open quantum system approach, thus extending previous work. We focused on the ion trap model but the formalism is general to any experimental implementation. We computed the decoherence time for that setup. We found that a quantum to classical transition occurs during the measurement and we proposed improved parameters to avoid such a feature. We provide analytic estimations for both zero and finite temperature. We also studied the entanglement between the Hawking-pair phonons for an acoustic black hole while in contact with a reservoir, through the quantum correlations, showing that they remain strongly correlated for small enough times and temperatures. We used the stochastic formalism and the method of characteristic to solve the field wave equation.

Decoherence and Loss of Entanglement in Acoustic Black Holes

We studied the process of decoherence in acoustic black holes. We focused on the ion trap model proposed by Horstmann et al. (Phys. Rev. Lett. 104, 250403 (2010)) but the formalism is general to any experimental implementation. For that particular setup, we computed the decoherence time for the experimental parameters that they proposed. We found that a quantum to classical transition occurs during the measurement and we proposed improved parameters to avoid such a feature. We also studied the entanglement between the Hawking-pair phonons for an acoustic black hole while in contact with a reservoir, through the quantum correlations, showing that they remain strongly correlated for small enough times and temperatures.
