New forms of attraction: Attractor saddles for the black hole index

The count of microstates for supersymmetric black holes is typically obtained from a supersymmetric index in weakly-coupled string theory. We find the saddles in the gravitational path integral corresponding to this index in a general theory of $N=2$ supergravity in asymptotically flat space. This saddle exhibits a new attractor mechanism which explains the agreement between the string theory index and the macroscopic entropy. These saddles are smooth, complex Euclidean spinning black holes that are supersymmetric but not extremal, i.e., they are formally finite-temperature solutions. With this new mechanism, the scalars and the electromagnetic fields get attracted to temperature- and moduli-independent values at the north and south poles of the rotating black hole, although they vary along the Euclidean horizon in a non-universal way. Further, although the area and the spin of the black hole depend non-trivially on the temperature and on the moduli, the free energy is essentially a function only of the black hole charges (apart from a trivial dependence on the temperature and the moduli through the BPS mass), and agrees with the string theory index.

Spin-Statistics for Black Hole Microstates

The gravitational path integral can be used to compute the number of black hole states for a given energy window, or the free energy in a thermal ensemble. In this article we explain how to use the gravitational path integral to compute the separate number of bosonic and fermionic black hole microstates. We do this by comparing the partition function with and without the insertion of $(-1)^{\sf F}$. In particular we introduce a universal rotating black hole that contributes to the partition function in the presence of $(-1)^{\sf F}$. We study this problem for black holes in asymptotically flat space and in AdS, putting constraints on the high energy spectrum of holographic CFTs (not necessarily supersymmetric). Finally, we analyze wormhole contributions to related quantities.

New insights on near-extremal black holes

We describe two puzzles that arise from a semiclassical treatment of near-extremal black hole thermodynamics. Both puzzles are resolved by realizing that quantum corrections become arbitrarily large at low temperatures, and we explain how the spectrum and dynamics of near-extremal black holes are modified. This analysis also implies that without low energy supersymmetry, such as in the real world, extremal black holes at exactly zero temperature do not exist since the classical picture breaks down completely. In the context of supergravity the analysis is modified; supersymmetric extremal black holes do exist and they are separated from the non-extremal spectrum by a gap power-law suppressed in the entropy. This justifies black hole microstate counting performed in the 90's using string theory.

Solvable Models of Quantum Black Holes: A Review on Jackiw-Teitelboim Gravity

We review recent developments in Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) gravity. This is a simple solvable model of quantum gravity in two dimensions (that arises e.g. from the s-wave sector of higher dimensional gravity systems with spherical symmetry). Due to its solvability, it has proven to be a fruitful toy model to analyze important questions such as the relation between black holes and chaos, the role of wormholes in black hole physics and holography, and the way in which information that falls into a black hole can be recovered.

2D dilaton gravity and the Weil-Petersson volumes with conical defects

We derive the Weil-Petersson measure on the moduli space of hyperbolic surfaces with defects of arbitrary opening angles and use this to compute its volume. We conjecture a matrix integral computing the corresponding volumes and confirm agreement in simple cases. We combine this mathematical result with the equivariant localization approach to Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity to justify a proposed exact solution of pure 2d dilaton gravity for a large class of dilaton potentials.

Liouville quantum gravity -- holography, JT and matrices

We study two-dimensional Liouville gravity and minimal string theory on spaces with fixed length boundaries. We find explicit formulas describing the gravitational dressing of bulk and boundary correlators in the disk. Their structure has a striking resemblance with observables in 2d BF (plus a boundary term), associated to a quantum deformation of $SL(2,\mathbb{R})$, a connection we develop in some detail. For the case of the $(2,p)$ minimal string theory, we compare and match the results from the continuum approach with a matrix model calculation, and verify that in the large $p$ limit the correlators match with Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity. We consider multi-boundary amplitudes that we write in terms of gluing bulk one-point functions using a quantum deformation of the Weil-Petersson volumes and gluing measures. Generating functions for genus zero Weil-Petersson volumes are derived, taking the large $p$ limit. Finally, we present preliminary evidence that the bulk theory can be interpreted as a 2d dilaton gravity model with a $\sinh Φ$ dilaton potential.

Phases of $\mathcal{N}=2$ Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev models

We study $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) models with complex fermions at non-zero background charge. Motivated by multi-charge supersymmetric black holes, we propose a new $\mathcal{N}=2$ SYK model with multiple $U(1)$ symmetries, integer charges, and a non-vanishing supersymmetric index, realizing features not present in known SYK models. In both models, a conformal solution with a super-Schwarzian mode emerges at low temperatures, signalling the appearance of nearly AdS$_2$/BPS physics. However, in contrast to complex SYK, the fermion scaling dimension depends on the background charge in the conformal limit. For a critical charge, we find a high to low entropy phase transition in which the conformal solution ceases to be valid. This transition has a simple interpretation: the fermion scaling dimension violates the unitarity bound. We offer some comments on a holographic interpretation for supersymmetric black holes.

Supersymmetric indices factorize

The extent to which quantum mechanical features of black holes can be understood from the Euclidean gravity path integral has recently received significant attention. In this paper, we examine this question for the calculation of the supersymmetric index. For concreteness, we focus on the case of charged black holes in asymptotically flat four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ ungauged supergravity. We show that the gravity path integral with supersymmetric boundary conditions has an infinite family of Kerr-Newman classical saddles with different angular velocities. We argue that fermionic zero-mode fluctuations are present around each of these solutions making their contribution vanish, except for a single saddle that is BPS and gives the expected value of the index. We then turn to non-perturbative corrections involving spacetime wormholes and show that a fermionic zero mode is present in all these geometries, making their contribution vanish once again. This mechanism works for both single- and multi-boundary path integrals. In particular, only disconnected geometries without wormholes contribute to the gravitational path integral which computes the index, and the factorization puzzle that plagues the black hole partition function is resolved for the supersymmetric index. Finally, we classify all other single-centered geometries that yield non-perturbative contributions to the gravitational index of each boundary.

Black hole microstate counting from the gravitational path integral

Reproducing the integer count of black hole micro-states from the gravitational path integral is an important problem in quantum gravity. In this paper, we show that, by using supersymmetric localization, the gravitational path integral for $\frac{1}8$-BPS black holes in $\mathcal{N}=8$ supergravity reproduces the index obtained in the string theory construction of such black holes, including all non-perturbatively suppressed geometries. A more refined argument then shows that, not only the black hole index, but also the total number of black hole microstates within an energy window above extremality that is polynomially suppressed in the charges, also matches this string theory index. To achieve such a match we compute the one-loop determinant arising in the localization calculation for all $\mathcal{N}=2$ supergravity supermultiplets in the $\mathcal{N}=8$ gravity supermultiplet. Furthermore, we carefully account for the contribution of boundary zero-modes, that can be seen as arising from the zero-temperature limit of the $\mathcal{N}=4$ super-Schwarzian, and show that performing the exact path integral over such modes provides a critical contribution needed for the match to be achieved. A discussion about the importance of such zero-modes in the wider context of all extremal black holes is presented in a companion paper.

Revisiting the Logarithmic Corrections to the Black Hole Entropy

Logarithmic corrections to the entropy of extremal black holes have been successfully used to accurately match degeneracies from microscopic constructions to calculations of the gravitational path integral. In this paper, we revisit the problem of deriving such corrections for the case of extremal black holes, either non-supersymmetric or supersymmetric, and for near-extremal black holes. The zero-modes that are present at extremality are crucial, since their path integral cannot be treated quadratically and needs to be regulated. We show how the regulated result can be obtained by taking the zero-temperature limit of either the $4d$ Einstein-Maxwell or $4d$ supergravity path integral to find the Schwarzian or super-Schwarzian theories. This leads to drastically different estimates for the degeneracy of non-supersymmetric and supersymmetric extremal black holes. In a companion paper, we discuss how such zero-modes affect the calculation of BPS black holes degeneracies, using supersymmetric localization for an exact computation of the gravitational path integral.

BPS and near-BPS black holes in $AdS_5$ and their spectrum in $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM

We study quantum corrections in the gravitational path integral around nearly $1/16$-BPS black holes in asymptotically $AdS_5 \times S^5$ space, dual to heavy states in 4D $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills. The analysis provides a gravitational explanation of why $1/16$-BPS black holes exhibit an exact degeneracy at large $N$ and why all such states have the same charges, confirming the belief that the superconformal index precisely counts the entropy of extremal black holes. We show the presence of a gap of order $N^{-2}$ between the $1/16$-BPS black holes and the lightest near-BPS black holes within the same charge sector. This is the first example of such a gap for black holes states within the context of $AdS_5$ holography. We also derive the spectrum of near-BPS states that lie above this gap. Our computation relies on finding the correct version of the $\mathcal{N}=2$ super-Schwarzian theory which captures the breaking of the $SU(1, 1|1)$ symmetry when the black hole has finite temperature and non-zero chemical potential. Finally, we comment on possible stringy and non-perturbative corrections that can affect the black hole spectrum.

Phase transitions for deformations of JT supergravity and matrix models

We analyze deformations of $\mathcal{N}=1$ Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) supergravity by adding a gas of defects, equivalent to changing the dilaton potential. We compute the Euclidean partition function in a topological expansion and find that it matches the perturbative expansion of a random matrix model to all orders. The matrix model implements an average over the Hamiltonian of a dual holographic description and provides a stable non-perturbative completion of these theories of $\mathcal{N}=1$ dilaton-supergravity. For some range of deformations, the supergravity spectral density becomes negative, yielding an ill-defined topological expansion. To solve this problem, we use the matrix model description and show the negative spectrum is resolved via a phase transition analogous to the Gross-Witten-Wadia transition. The matrix model contains a rich and novel phase structure that we explore in detail, using both perturbative and non-perturbative techniques.

The statistical mechanics of near-BPS black holes

Due to the failure of thermodynamics for low temperature near-extremal black holes, it has long been conjectured that a "thermodynamic mass gap" exists between an extremal black hole and the lightest near-extremal state. For non-supersymmetric near-extremal black holes in Einstein gravity, with an AdS$_2$ throat, no such gap was found. Rather, at that energy scale, the spectrum exhibits a continuum of states, up to non-perturbative corrections. In this paper, we compute the partition function of near-BPS black holes in supergravity where the emergent, broken, symmetry is $PSU(1,1|2)$. To reliably compute this partition function, we show that the gravitational path integral can be reduced to that of a $\mathcal N=4$ supersymmetric extension of the Schwarzian theory, which we define and exactly quantize. In contrast to the non-supersymmetric case, we find that black holes in supergravity have a mass gap and a large extremal black hole degeneracy consistent with the Bekenstein-Hawking area. Our results verify several string theory conjectures, concerning the scale of the mass gap and the counting of extremal micro-states.

Dilaton-gravity, deformations of the minimal string, and matrix models

A large class of two-dimensional dilaton-gravity theories in asymptotically AdS$_2$ spacetimes are holographically dual to a matrix integral, interpreted as an ensemble average over Hamiltonians. Viewing these theories as Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity with a gas of defects, we extend this duality to a broader class of dilaton potentials compared to previous work by including conical defects with small deficit angles. In order to do this we show that these theories are equal to the large $p$ limit of a natural deformation of the $(2,p)$ minimal string theory.

The path integral of 3D gravity near extremality; or, JT gravity with defects as a matrix integral

We propose that a class of new topologies, for which there is no classical solution, should be included in the path integral of three-dimensional pure gravity, and that their inclusion solves pathological negativities in the spectrum, replacing them with a nonperturbative shift of the BTZ extremality bound. We argue that a two-dimensional calculation using a dimensionally reduced theory captures the leading effects in the near extremal limit. To make this argument, we study a closely related two-dimensional theory of Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity with dynamical defects. We show that this theory is equivalent to a matrix integral.

Wormhole calculus, replicas, and entropies

We investigate contributions of spacetime wormholes, describing baby universe emission and absorption, to calculations of entropies and correlation functions, for example those based on the replica method. We find that the rules of the "wormhole calculus," developed in the 1980s, together with standard quantum mechanical prescriptions for computing entropies and correlators, imply definite rules for $\textit{limited}$ patterns of connection between replica factors in simple calculations. These results stand in contrast with assumptions that all topologies connecting replicas should be summed over, and call into question the explanation for the latter. In a "free" approximation baby universes introduce probability distributions for coupling constants, and we review and extend arguments that successive experiments in a "parent" universe increasingly precisely fix such couplings, resulting in ultimately pure evolution. Once this has happened, the nontrivial question remains of how topology-changing effects can modify the standard description of black hole information loss.

JT gravity at finite cutoff

We compute the partition function of $2D$ Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) gravity at finite cutoff in two ways: (i) via an exact evaluation of the Wheeler-DeWitt wave-functional in radial quantization and (ii) through a direct computation of the Euclidean path integral. Both methods deal with Dirichlet boundary conditions for the metric and the dilaton. In the first approach, the radial wavefunctionals are found by reducing the constraint equations to two first order functional derivative equations that can be solved exactly, including factor ordering. In the second approach we perform the path integral exactly when summing over surfaces with disk topology, to all orders in perturbation theory in the cutoff. Both results precisely match the recently derived partition function in the Schwarzian theory deformed by an operator analogous to the $T\bar{T}$ deformation in $2D$ CFTs. This equality can be seen as concrete evidence for the proposed holographic interpretation of the $T\bar{T}$ deformation as the movement of the AdS boundary to a finite radial distance in the bulk.

A universal Schwarzian sector in two-dimensional conformal field theories

We show that an extremely generic class of two-dimensional conformal field theories (CFTs) contains a sector described by the Schwarzian theory. This applies to theories with no additional symmetries and large central charge, but does not require a holographic dual. Specifically, we use bootstrap methods to show that in the grand canonical ensemble, at low temperature with a chemical potential sourcing large angular momentum, the density of states and correlation functions are determined by the Schwarzian theory, up to parametrically small corrections. In particular, we compute out-of-time-order correlators in a controlled approximation. For holographic theories, these results have a gravitational interpretation in terms of large, near-extremal rotating BTZ black holes, which have a near horizon throat with nearly AdS$_2 \times S^1$ geometry. The Schwarzian describes strongly coupled gravitational dynamics in the throat, which can be reduced to Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) gravity interacting with a $U(1)$ field associated to transverse rotations, coupled to matter. We match the physics in the throat to observables at the AdS$_3$ boundary, reproducing the CFT results.
