First Look at the Physics Case of TLEP

The discovery by the ATLAS and CMS experiments of a new boson with mass around 125 GeV and with measured properties compatible with those of a Standard-Model Higgs boson, coupled with the absence of discoveries of phenomena beyond the Standard Model at the TeV scale, has triggered interest in ideas for future Higgs factories. A new circular e+e- collider hosted in a 80 to 100 km tunnel, TLEP, is among the most attractive solutions proposed so far. It has a clean experimental environment, produces high luminosity for top-quark, Higgs boson, W and Z studies, accommodates multiple detectors, and can reach energies up to the t-tbar threshold and beyond. It will enable measurements of the Higgs boson properties and of Electroweak Symmetry-Breaking (EWSB) parameters with unequalled precision, offering exploration of physics beyond the Standard Model in the multi-TeV range. Moreover, being the natural precursor of the VHE-LHC, a 100 TeV hadron machine in the same tunnel, it builds up a long-term vision for particle physics. Altogether, the combination of TLEP and the VHE-LHC offers, for a great cost effectiveness, the best precision and the best search reach of all options presently on the market. This paper presents a first appraisal of the salient features of the TLEP physics potential, to serve as a baseline for a more extensive design study.

Supersymmetry Parameter Analysis: SPA Convention and Project

High-precision analyses of supersymmetry parameters aim at reconstructing the fundamental supersymmetric theory and its breaking mechanism. A well defined theoretical framework is needed when higher-order corrections are included. We propose such a scheme, Supersymmetry Parameter Analysis SPA, based on a consistent set of conventions and input parameters. A repository for computer programs is provided which connect parameters in different schemes and relate the Lagrangian parameters to physical observables at LHC and high energy e+e- linear collider experiments, i.e., masses, mixings, decay widths and production cross sections for supersymmetric particles. In addition, programs for calculating high-precision low energy observables, the density of cold dark matter (CDM) in the universe as well as the cross sections for CDM search experiments are included. The SPA scheme still requires extended efforts on both the theoretical and experimental side before data can be evaluated in the future at the level of the desired precision. We take here an initial step of testing the SPA scheme by applying the techniques involved to a specific supersymmetry reference point.

The Higgs Working Group: Summary Report 2003

Theoretical progress in Higgs boson production and background processes is discussed with particular emphasis on QCD corrections at and beyond next-to-leading order as well as next-to-leading order electroweak corrections. The residual theoretical uncertainties of the investigated processes are estimated in detail. Moreover, recent investigations of the MSSM Higgs sector and other extensions of the SM Higgs sector are presented. The potential of the LHC and a high-energy linear e+e- collider for the measurement of Higgs couplings is analyzed.

W^+ W^+ Scattering as a Sensitive Test of the Anomalous Gauge Couplings of the Higgs Boson at the LHC

We propose a sensitive way to test the anomalous HVV couplings (V=W^\pm, Z^0) of the Higgs boson (H), which can arise from either the dimension-3 effective operator in a nonlinearly realized Higgs sector or the dimension-6 effective operators in a linearly realized Higgs sector, via studying the VV scattering processes at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). We show that, with an integrated luminosity of 300 fb^{-1} and sufficient kinematical cuts for suppressing the backgrounds, studying the process pp \to W^+ W^+ j j \to ł^+ νł^+ νj j can probe the anomalous HWW couplings at a few tens of percent level for the nonlinearly realized Higgs sector, and at the level of 0.01-0.08 TeV^{-1} for the linearly realized effective Lagrangian.

The structure of electroweak corrections due to extended gauge symmetries

This paper studies models with extended electroweak gauge sectors of the form SU(2) x SU(2) x U(1) x [SU(2) or U(1)]. We establish the general behavior of corrections to precision electroweak observables in this class of theories and connect our results to previous work on specific models whose electroweak sectors are special cases of our extended group.

Extra Families, Higgs Spectrum and Oblique Corrections

The standard model accommodates, but does not explain, three families of leptons and quarks, while various extensions suggest extra matter families. The oblique corrections from extra chiral families with relatively light (weak-scale) masses, $M_{f} \sim $, are analyzed and used to constrain the number of extra families and their spectrum. The analysis is motivated, in part, by recent N = 2 supersymmetry constructions, but is performed in a model-independent way. It is shown that the correlations among the contributions to the three oblique parameters, rather than the contribution to a particular one, provide the most significant bound. Nevertheless, a single extra chiral family with a constrained spectrum is found to be consistent with precision data without requiring any other new physics source. Models with three additional families may also be accommodated but only by invoking additional new physics, most notably, a two-Higgs-doublet extension. The interplay between the spectra of the extra fermions and the Higgs boson(s) is analyzed in the case of either one or two Higgs doublets, and its implications are explored. In particular, the precision bound on the SM-like Higgs boson mass is shown to be significantly relaxed in the presence of an extra relatively light chiral family.

New Topflavor Models with Seesaw Mechanism

New class of models are constructed in which the third family quarks, but not leptons, experience a new SU(2) or U(1) gauge force. Anomaly cancellation enforces the introduction of spectator quarks so that the top and bottom masses are naturally generated via a seesaw mechanism. We find the new contributions to the (S,T,U) parameters and Zbb vertex to be generically small. We further analyze how the reasonable flavor mixing pattern can be generated to ensure the top-seesaw mechanism and sufficiently suppress the flavor-changing effects for light quarks. Collider signatures for the light Higgs boson and top quark are also discussed.

Strongly Interacting Vector Bosons at TeV e+-e- Linear Colliders -Addendum-

Extending earlier investigations, we analyze the quasi-elastic scattering of strongly interacting electroweak bosons at high-energy e+-e- colliders. The three processes e+e- -> bar-nu nu W+W-, bar-nu nu ZZ, and e-e- -> W-W- are examined at a c.m. energy of 1 TeV for high-luminosity runs. The expected experimental error on the scattering amplitude, parameter-free to leading order in the chiral expansion of the WW interactions, is estimated for 1 TeV colliders at the level of ten percent, providing a stringent test of strong interaction mechanisms for breaking the electroweak symmetries.

New Method for Detecting Charged (Pseudo-)Scalars at Colliders

We propose a new method for detecting a charged (pseudo-)scalar at colliders, based upon the observation that its Yukawa coupling to charm and bottom quarks can be large due to a significant mixing of the top and charm quarks. After analyzing the typical flavor mixing allowed by low energy data in the topcolor and the generic two-Higgs doublet models, we study the physics potential of the Tevatron, LHC, and linear colliders for probing such an s-channel charged resonance via the single-top (as well as Wh^0) production. We show that studying its detection at colliders can also provide information on the dynamics of flavor-changing neutral current phenomena.

Collider Tests of Compact Space Dimensions Using Weak Gauge Bosons

We present collider tests of the recent proposal for weak-scale quantum gravity due to new large compact space dimensions in which only the graviton ($\G$) propagates. We show that the existing high precision LEP-I $Z$-pole data can impose non-trivial constraints on the scale of the new dimensions, via the decay mode $Z\to f\bar{f}+\G$ ($f=q,\ell$). These bounds are comparable to those obtained at high energy colliders and provide the first sensitive probe of the scalar graviton. We also study $W(Z)+\G$ production and the anomalous $WW(ZZ)$ signal from virtual $\G$-states at the Fermilab Tevatron, and compare them with the LEP-I bound and those from LEP-II and future linear colliders.

Probing Higgs Bosons with Large Bottom Yukawa Coupling at Hadron Colliders

The small mass of the bottom quark, relative to its weak isospin partner, the top quark, makes the bottom an effective probe of new physics in Higgs and top sectors. We study the Higgs boson production associated with bottom quarks, ppbar/pp to phi+b+bbar to 4b, at the Fermilab Tevatron and the CERN LHC. We find that strong and model-independent constraints on the size of the phi-b-bbar coupling can be obtained for a wide range of Higgs boson masses. Their implications for the composite Higgs models with strong dynamics associated with the third family quarks (such as the top-condensate/topcolor models with naturally large bottom Yukawa couplings), and for the supersymmetric models with large tan(beta), are analyzed. We conclude that the Tevatron and the LHC can put stringent bounds on these models, if the phi+b+bbar signal is not found.

Higgs Boson with Large Bottom Yukawa Coupling at Tevatron and LHC

We study the discovery reach of the Tevatron and the LHC for detecting a Higgs boson (h), predicted in composite models of the electroweak symmetry breaking or in supersymmetric theories, with an enhanced b-quark Yukawa coupling via p \bar{p} / p p \to b \bbar h (\to b \bbar) + X. Our analysis shows that studying this process at the Tevatron Run II or the LHC can provide strong constraints on these models.

Quartic Gauge Boson Couplings

We review the recent progress in studying the anomalous electroweak quartic gauge boson couplings (QGBCs) at the LHC and the next generation high energy e+-e- linear colliders (LCs). The main focus is put onto the strong electroweak symmetry breaking scenario in which the non-decoupling guarantees sizable new physics effects for the QGBCs. After commenting upon the current low energy indirect bounds and summarizing the theoretical patterns of QGBCs predicted by the typical resonance/non-resonance models, we review our systematic model-independent analysis on bounding them via WW-fusion and WWZ/ZZZ-production. The interplay of the two production mechanisms and the important role of the beam-polarization at the LCs are emphasized. The same physics may be similarly and better studied at a multi-TeV muon collider with high luminosity.

Quartic Gauge Boson Couplings at Linear Colliders ---Interplay of WWZ/ZZZ Production and WW-Fusion--

We study new physics effects to the quartic gauge boson couplings formulated by the electroweak chiral Lagrangian. Five next-to-leading order operators characterize the anomalous quartic gauge interactions which involve pure Goldstone boson dynamics for the electroweak symmetry breaking. We estimate the typical size of these couplings in different strongly-interacting models and examine the sensitivity to directly probing them via the WWZ/ZZZ triple gauge boson production at the high energy linear colliders. The important roles of polarized e- and e+ beams are stressed. We then compare the results with those from the W-pair production of the WW-fusion processes, and analyze the interplay of these two production mechanisms for an improved probe of the quartic gauge boson interactions.

Strongly Interacting Vector Bosons at TeV e+-e- Linear Colliders

In the absence of light Higgs bosons, the W and Z bosons become strongly interacting particles at energies of about 1 TeV. If the longitudinal W,Z components are generated by Goldstone modes associated with spontaneous symmetry breaking in a new strong interaction theory, the quasi-elastic W,Z scattering amplitudes can be predicted as a systematic chiral expansion in the energy. We study the potential of TeV e+e- and e-e- linear colliders in investigating these scattering processes. We estimate the accuracy with which the coefficients of the chiral expansion can be measured in a multi-parameter analysis. The measurements will provide us with a quantitative test of the dynamics underlying the W,Z interactions.

Probing Electroweak Symmetry Breaking via WW Interactions at High Energy Colliders

We classify the sensitivities of the future high energy hadron and electron colliders, such as the LHC and the future Linear Colliders, to probing all the next-to-leading order (NLO) bosonic operators for studying the electroweak symmetry breaking (EWSB) mechanism. We first develop a power counting rule (a generalization of Weinberg's counting method for the nonlinear sigma model) for the electroweak theories formulated by the chiral Lagrangian. Then, we formulate the Longitudinal-Goldstone Boson Equivalence Theorem as a physical criterion to discriminate the scattering processes that are not sensitive to the EWSB sector. The "complementarity" of different scattering processes via different colliders for a complete probe of all these NLO effective operators is demonstrated.

Global Analysis for Probing Electroweak Symmetry Breaking Mechanism at High Energy Colliders

We review our recent global analysis for probing the electroweak symmetry breaking (EWSB) mechanism by the universal effective Lagrangian description. After summarizing and commenting upon the current bounds for the EWSB parameters, we focus on testing them at the forthcoming high energy colliders such as the CERN LHC and the future linear colliders. We develop a precise electroweak power counting method (a la Weinberg) and formulate the longitudinal-Goldstone boson equivalence as a necessary criterion for sensitively probing the EWSB sector. Armed with these, we systematically estimate and classify the contributions of {all} next-to-leading order (NLO) bosonic operators to various scattering processes at the high energy colliders. The experimental signatures at these colliders are also analyzed. Furthermore, the {complementarity} of different scattering processes via different colliders for a complete probe of all these NLO effective operators is demonstrated.
