Probing Electroweak Symmetry Breaking Mechanism at the LHC: A Guideline from Power Counting Analysis

We formulate the equivalence theorem as a theoretical criterion for sensitively probing the electroweak symmetry breaking mechanism, and develop a precise power counting method for the chiral Lagrangian formulated electroweak theories. Armed with these, we perform a systematic analysis on the sensitivities of the scattering processes $W^\pm W^\pm \rightarrow W^\pm W^\pm$ and $q\bar{q}'\rightarrow W^\pm Z$ for testing all possible effective bosonic operators in the chiral Lagrangian formulated electroweak theories at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The analysis shows that these two kinds of processes are "complementary" in probing the electroweak symmetry breaking sector.

Estimating The Sensitivity Of The LHC To Electroweak Symmetry Breaking: Longitudinal-Goldstone Boson Equivalence As A Criterion

Based upon our recent study, we reveal the profound physical content of the longitudinal-Goldstone boson equivalence theorem as being able to discriminate physical processes which are sensitive/insensitive to probing the electroweak symmetry breaking (EWSB) sector. We then develop a precise electroweak power counting rule (a generalization from Weinberg's counting method) to `separately' count the power dependences on the energy E and all relevant mass scales. With these, we analyze the complete set of the bosonic operators in the electroweak chiral Lagrangian and systematically estimate and classify the sensitivities for testing all these effective operators at the CERN LHC via the weak-boson fusions and quark-anti-quark annihilations. These two kinds of processes are shown to be `complementary' in probing the EWSB mechanism.

Global Power Counting Analysis On Probing Electroweak Symmetry Breaking Mechanism At High Energy Colliders

We develop a precise power counting rule (a generalization of Weinberg's counting method for the nonlinear sigma model) for the electroweak theories formulated by chiral Lagrangians. Then we estimate the contributions of ``all'' next-to-leading order (NLO) bosonic operators to the amplitudes of the relevant scattering processes which can be measured at high energy colliders, such as the LHC and future Linear Colliders. Based upon these results, we globally classify the sensitivities of testing all NLO bosonic operators for probing the electroweak symmetry breaking mechanism at high energy colliders.

The Equivalence Theorem And Its Radiative-Correction-Free Formulation For All R_xi Gauges

The electroweak equivalence theorem quantitatively connects the physical amplitudes of longitudinal massive gauge bosons to those of the corresponding ``unphysical'' would-be Goldstone bosons. Its precise form depends on both the gauge fixing condition and the renormalization scheme. Our previous modification-free schemes have applied to a broad class of $R_ξ$ gauges including 't Hooft-Feynman gauge but excluding Landau gauge. In this paper we construct a new renormalization scheme in which the radiative modification factor, $C_{mod}^a$, is equal to unity for all $R_ξ$-gauges, including both 't Hooft-Feynman and Landau gauges. This scheme makes $C_{mod}^a$ equal to unity by specifying a convenient subtraction condition for the would-be Goldstone boson wavefunction renormalization constant $Z_{ϕ^a}$. We build the new scheme for both the standard model and the effective Lagrangian formulated electroweak theories (with either linearly or non-linearly realized symmetry breaking sector). Based upon these, a new prescription, called ``divided equivalence theorem'', is further proposed for extending the high energy region applicable to the equivalence theorem.

Equivalence Theorem as a Criterion for Probing the Electroweak Symmetry Breaking Mechanism

Based upon our recent study on the Lorentz non-invariance ambiguity in the longitudinal weak-boson scatterings and the precise conditions for the validity of the Equivalence Theorem (ET), we further examine the intrinsic connection between the longitudinal weak-boson scatterings and probing the electroweak symmetry breaking (EWSB) mechanism. We reveal the profound physical content of the ET as being able to discriminate processes which are insensitive to probing the EWSB sector. With this physical content as a criterion, we analyze the sensitivities to various effective operators for probing the mechanism of the EWSB.
