Two Cold Atoms in a Time-Dependent Harmonic Trap in One Dimension

We analyze the dynamics of two atoms with a short-ranged pair interaction in a one-dimensional harmonic trap with time-dependent frequency. Our analysis is focused on two representative cases: (i) a sudden change of the trapping frequency from one value to another, and (ii) a periodic trapping frequency. In case (i), the dynamics of the interacting and the corresponding non-interacting systems turn out to be similar. In the second case, however, the interacting system can behave quite differently, especially close to parametric resonance. For instance, in the regions where such resonance occurs we find that the interaction can significantly reduce the rate of energy increase. The implications for applications of our findings to cool or heat the system are also dicussed.

Effective Theory of 3H and 3He

We present a new perturbative expansion for pionless effective field theory with Coulomb interactions in which at leading order the spin-singlet nucleon-nucleon channels are taken in the unitarity limit. Presenting results up to next-to-leading order for the Phillips line and the neutron-deuteron doublet-channel phase shift, we find that a perturbative expansion in the inverse 1S0 scattering lengths converges rapidly. Using a new systematic treatment of the proton-proton sector that isolates the divergence due to one-photon exchange, we renormalize the corresponding contribution to the 3H-3He binding energy splitting and demonstrate that the Coulomb force in pionless EFT is a completely perturbative effect in the trinucleon bound-state regime. In our new expansion, the leading order is exactly isospin-symmetric. At next-to-leading order, we include isospin breaking via the Coulomb force and two-body scattering lengths, and find for the energy splitting (E_B(3He)-E_B(3H))^NLO = (-0.86 +/- 0.17) MeV.

Simulation of Time-dependent Heisenberg Models in 1D

In this paper, we provide a theoretical analysis of strongly interacting quantum systems confined by a time-dependent external potential in one spatial dimension. We show that such systems can be used to simulate spin chains described by Heisenberg Hamiltonians in which the exchange coupling constants can be manipulated by time-dependent driving of the shape of the external confinement. As illustrative examples, we consider a harmonic trapping potential with a variable frequency and an infinite square well potential with a time-dependent barrier in the middle.

Ab initio lattice results for Fermi polarons in two dimensions

We investigate the attractive Fermi polaron problem in two dimensions using non-perturbative Monte Carlo simulations. We introduce a new Monte Carlo algorithm called the impurity lattice Monte Carlo method. This algorithm samples the path integral in a computationally efficient manner and has only small sign oscillations for systems with a single impurity. As a benchmark of the method, we calculate the universal polaron energy in three dimensions in the scale-invariant unitarity limit and find agreement with published results. We then present the first fully non-perturbative calculations of the polaron energy in two dimensions and density correlations between the impurity and majority particles in the limit of zero range interactions. We find evidence for a smooth crossover transition from fermionic quasiparticle to molecular state as a function of interaction strength.

Real-Time Dynamics of an Impurity in an Ideal Bose Gas in a Trap

We investigate the behavior of a harmonically trapped system consisting of an impurity in a dilute ideal Bose gas after the boson-impurity interaction is suddenly switched on. As theoretical framework, we use a field theory approach in the space-time domain within the T-matrix approximation. We establish the form of the corresponding T-matrix and address the dynamical properties of the system. As a numerical application, we consider a simple system of a weakly interacting impurity in one dimension where the interaction leads to oscillations of the impurity density. Moreover, we show that the amplitude of the oscillations can be driven by periodically switching the interaction on and off.

Range corrections in Proton Halo Nuclei

We analyze the effects of finite-range corrections in halo effective field theory for S-wave proton halo nuclei. We calculate the charge radius to next-to-leading order and the astrophysical S-factor for low-energy proton capture to fifth order in the low-energy expansion. As an application, we confront our results with experimental data for the S-factor for proton capture on Oxygen-16 into the excited $1/2^+$ state of Fluorine-17. Our low-energy theory is characterized by a systematic low-energy expansion, which can be used to quantify an energy-dependent model error to be utilized in data fitting. Finally, we show that the existence of proton halos is suppressed by the need for two fine tunings in the underlying theory.

New structures in the proton-antiproton system

In the most recent measurements of the reaction $e^+e^- \rightarrow p\bar{p}$ by the BABAR collaboration, new structures have been found with unknown origin. We examine a possible relation of the most distinct peak to the recently observed $Φ(2170)$. Alternatively, we analyse possible explanations due to the nucleon$\,\barΔ$ and $Δ\barΔ$ thresholds. The latter could explain a periodicity found in the data.

Finite volume corrections to the binding energy of the X(3872)

The quark mass dependence of hadrons is an important input for lattice calculations. We investigate the light quark mass dependence of the binding energy of the X(3872) in a finite box to next-to-leading order in an effective field theory for the X(3872) with perturbative pions (XEFT). At this order, the quark mass dependence is determined by a quark mass-dependent contact interaction in addition to the one-pion exchange. While there is only a moderate sensitivity to the light quark masses in the region up to twice their physical value, the finite volume effects are significant already at box length as large as 20 fm.

Limit Cycles from the Similarity Renormalization Group

We investigate renormalization group limit cycles within the similarity renormalization group (SRG) and discuss their signatures in the evolved interaction. A quantitative method to detect limit cycles in the interaction and to extract their period is proposed. Several SRG generators are compared regarding their suitability for this purpose. As a test case, we consider the limit cycle of the inverse square potential.

The proton-deuteron system in pionless EFT revisited

We provide a detailed discussion of the low-energy proton-deuteron system in pionless effective field theory, considering both the spin-quartet and doublet S-wave channels. Extending and amending our previous work on the subject, we calculate the 3He-3H binding energy difference both perturbatively (using properly normalized trinucleon wave functions) and non-perturbatively by resumming all O(alpha) Coulomb diagrams in the doublet channel. Our nonperturbative result agrees well with a calculation that involves the full off-shell Coulomb T-matrix. Carefully examining the cutoff-dependence in the doublet channel, we present numerical evidence for a new three-nucleon counterterm being necessary at next-to-leading order if Coulomb effects are included. Indeed, such a term has recently been identified analytically. We furthermore make a case for a simplified Coulomb power counting that is consistent throughout the bound-state and scattering regimes. Finally, using a "partially screened" full off-shell Coulomb T-matrix, we investigate the importance of higher-order Coulomb corrections in low-energy quartet-channel scattering.

Theoretical Constraints and Systematic Effects in the Determination of the Proton Form Factors

We calculate the two-photon exchange corrections to electron-proton scattering with nucleon and $Δ$ intermediate states. The results show a dependence on the elastic nucleon and nucleon-$Δ$-transition form factors used as input which leads to significant changes compared to previous calculations. We discuss the relevance of these corrections and apply them to the most recent and precise data set and world data from electron-proton scattering. Using this, we show how the form factor extraction from these data is influenced by the subsequent inclusion of physical constraints. The determination of the proton charge radius from scattering data is shown to be dominated by the enforcement of a realistic spectral function. Additionally, the third Zemach moment from the resulting form factors is calculated. The obtained radius and Zemach moment are shown to be consistent with Lamb shift measurements in muonic hydrogen.

Remarks on the study of the X(3872) from Effective Field Theory with Pion-Exchange Interaction

In a recent paper Phys.Rev.Lett. 111, 042002 (2013) (arXiv:1304.0846), the charmonium state X(3872) is studied in the framework of an effective field theory. In that work it is claimed that (i) the one-pion exchange (OPE) alone provides sufficient binding to produce the X as a shallow bound state at the $D^0\bar{D}^{*0}$ threshold, (ii) short-range dynamics (described by a contact interaction) provides only moderate corrections to the OPE, and (iii) the X-pole disappears as the pion mass is increased slightly and therefore the X should not be seen on the lattice, away from the pion physical mass point, if it were a molecular state. In this paper we demonstrate that the results of Phys.Rev.Lett. 111, 042002 (2013) (arXiv:1304.0846) suffer from technical as well as conceptual problems and therefore do not support the conclusions drawn by the authors.

Constraining Low-Energy Proton Capture on Beryllium-7 through Charge Radius Measurements

In this paper, we point out that a measurement of the charge radius of Boron-8 provides indirect access to the S-factor for radiative proton capture on Beryllium-7 at low energies. We use leading-order halo effective field theory to explore this correlation and we give a relation between the charge radius and the S-factor. Furthermore, we present important technical aspects relevant to the renormalization of pointlike P-wave interactions in the presence of a repulsive Coulomb interaction.

Precision calculation of the quartet-channel p-d scattering length

We present a fully perturbative calculation of the quartet-channel proton--deuteron scattering length up to next-to-next-to-leading order in pionless effective field theory. We use a framework that consistently extracts the Coulomb-modified effective range function for a screened Coulomb potential in momentum space and allows for a clear linear extrapolation back to the physical limit without screening. Our result of (10.9 +/- 0.4) fm agrees with older experimental determinations of this quantity but deviates from potential-model calculations and a more recent result from Black et al., which find larger values around 14 fm. As a possible resolution to this discrepancy, we discuss the scheme dependence of Coulomb subtractions in a three-body system.

Efimov Physics around the neutron rich Calcium-60 isotope

We calculate the neutron-Calcium-60 S-wave scattering phase shifts using state of the art coupled-cluster theory combined with modern ab initio interactions derived from chiral effective theory. Effects of three-nucleon forces are included schematically as density dependent nucleon-nucleon interactions. This information is combined with halo effective field theory in order to investigate the Calcium-60-neutron-neutron system. We predict correlations between different three-body observables and the two-neutron separation energy of Calcium-62. This provides evidence of Efimov physics along the Calcium isotope chain. Experimental key observables that facilitate a test of our findings are discussed.

Universal Relation for the Inelastic Two-Body Loss Rate

Strongly-interacting systems consisting of particles that interact through a large scattering length satisfy universal relations that relate many of their central properties to the contact, which measures the number of pairs with small separations. We use the operator product expansion of quantum field theory to derive the universal relation for the inelastic 2-body loss rate. A simple universal relation between the loss rate and the contact is obtained by truncating the expansion after the lowest dimension operator. We verify the universal relation explicitly by direct calculations in the low-density limit at nonzero temperature. This universal relation can be tested experimentally using ultracold quantum gases of atoms in hyperfine states that have an inelastic spin-relaxation channel.

Light quark mass dependence of the X(3872) in XEFT

The quark mass dependence of hadrons is an important input for lattice calculations. We investigate the light quark mass dependence of the binding energy of the X(3872) and the Dbar0-D*0 scattering length in the C=+1 channel to next-to-leading order in XEFT where pion interactions are perturbative. At this order, the quark mass dependence is determined by a quark mass-dependent contact interaction in addition to the one-pion exchange. Using naturalness arguments to constrain unknown parameters, we find a moderate sensitivity of the binding energy for quark masses up to twice the physical value while the scattering length is more sensitive. The occurrence of infrared divergences due to on-shell pions in XEFT and their treatment is discussed in detail.

Electromagnetic Structure of the Z_c(3900)

The observation of the exotic quarkonium state Z_c(3900) by the BESIII and Belle collaborations supports the concept of hadronic molecules. Charmonium states interpreted as such molecules would be bound states of heavy particles with small binding energies. This motivates their description using an effective theory with contact interactions. In particular, we focus on the electromagnetic structure of the charged state Z_c(3900). Using first experimental results concerning spin and parity, we interpret it as an S-wave molecule and calculate the form factors as well as charge and magnetic radii up to next-to-leading order. We also present first numerical estimations of some of these observables at leading order.
