Universal Two-body Physics in Dark Matter near an S-wave Resonance

The dark matter annihilation rate at small relative velocities can be amplified by a large boost factor using various mechanisms, including Sommerfeld enhancement, resonance enhancement, and Breit-Wigner enhancement. These mechanisms all involve a resonance near the threshold for a pair of dark matter particles. We point out that if the resonance is in the S-wave channel, the mechanisms are equivalent sufficiently near the resonance and they are constrained by universal two-body physics. The amplified annihilation rate requires a corresponding amplification of the elastic scattering cross section. If the resonance is a bound state below the threshold, it has an increased lifetime that is inversely proportional to the square root of the binding energy. Its spatial structure is that of two dark matter particles whose mean separation is also inversely proportional to the square root of the binding energy.

Charge form factors of two-neutron halo nuclei in halo EFT

We set up a formalism to calculate the charge form factors of two-neutron halo nuclei with S-wave neutron-core interactions in the framework of the halo effective field theory. The method is applied to some known and suspected halo nuclei. In particular, we calculate the form factors and charge radii relative to the core to leading order in the halo EFT and compare to experiments where they are available. Moreover, we investigate the general dependence of the charge radius on the core mass and the one- and two-neutron separation energies.

Effective field theory for proton halo nuclei

We use halo effective field theory to analyze the universal features of proton halo nuclei bound due to a large S-wave scattering length. With a Lagrangian built from effective core and valence-proton fields, we derive a leading-order expression for the charge form factor. Within the same framework we also calculate the radiative proton capture cross section. Our general results at leading order are applied to study the excited 1/2+ state of Fluorine-17, and we give results for the charge radius and the astrophysical S-factor.

Causality, universality, and effective field theory for van der Waals interactions

We analyze low-energy scattering for arbitrary short-range interactions plus an attractive 1/r^6 tail. We derive the constraints of causality and unitarity and find that the van der Waals length scale dominates over parameters characterizing the short-distance physics of the interaction. This separation of scales suggests a separate universality class for physics characterizing interactions with an attractive 1/r^6 tail. We argue that a similar universality class exists for any attractive potential 1/r^{alpha} for alpha >= 2. We also discuss the extension to multi-channel systems near a magnetic Feshbach resonance. We discuss the implications for effective field theory with attractive singular power law tails.

Causality constraints for charged particles

In quantum systems with short-range interactions, causality imposes nontrivial constraints on low-energy scattering parameters. We investigate these causality constraints for systems where a long-range Coulomb potential is present in addition to a short-range interaction. The main result is an upper bound for the Coulomb-modified effective range parameter. We discuss the implications of this bound to the effective field theory for nuclear halo systems. In particular, we consider several examples of proton--nucleus and nucleus--nucleus scattering. For the bound-state regime, we find relations for the asymptotic normalization coefficients (ANCs) of nuclear halo states. As an application of these relations, we extract the ANCs of the excited 2+ and 1- states in O-16 from alpha--C-12 scattering data.

Three-body forces: From cold atoms to nuclei

It is often assumed that few- and many-body systems can be accurately described by considering only pairwise two-body interactions of the constituents. We illustrate that three- and higher-body forces enter naturally in effective field theories and are especially prominent in strongly interacting quantum systems. We focus on three-body forces and discuss examples from atomic and nuclear physics. In particular, we highlight the importance and the challenges of three-nucleon forces for nuclear structure and reactions, including applications to astrophysics and fundamental symmetries.

Threshold neutral pion photoproduction off the tri-nucleon to O(q^4)

We calculate electromagnetic neutral pion production off tri-nucleon bound states (3H, 3He) at threshold in chiral nuclear effective field theory to fourth order in the standard heavy baryon counting. We show that the fourth order two-nucleon corrections to the S-wave multipoles at threshold are very small. This implies that a precise measurement of the S-wave cross section for neutral pion production off 3He allows for a stringent test of the chiral perturbation theory prediction for the S-wave electric multipole E_{0+}^{pi0 n}.

Convergence Properties of the Effective Theory for Trapped Bosons

We investigate few-boson systems with resonant interactions in a narrow harmonic trap within an effective theory framework. The size of the model space is identified with the effective theory cutoff. In the universal regime, the interactions of the bosons can be approximated by contact interactions. We investigate the convergence properties of genuine and smeared contact interactions as the size of the model space is increased and present a detailed error analysis. The spectra for few-boson systems with up to 6 identical particles are calculated by combining extrapolations in the cutoff and in the smearing parameter.

The size of the proton - closing in on the radius puzzle

We analyze the recent electron-proton scattering data from Mainz using a dispersive framework that respects the constraints from analyticity and unitarity on the nucleon structure. We also perform a continued fraction analysis of these data. We find a small electric proton charge radius, r_E^p = 0.84_{-0.01}^{+0.01} fm, consistent with the recent determination from muonic hydrogen measurements and earlier dispersive analyses. We also extract the proton magnetic radius, r_M^p = 0.86_{-0.03}^{+0.02} fm, consistent with earlier determinations based on dispersion relations.

Renormalization in the Three-body Problem with Resonant P-wave Interactions

Resonant P-wave interactions can be described by a minimal zero-range model defined by a truncated effective range expansion, so that the only 2-body interaction parameters are the inverse scattering volume 1/a_P and the P-wave effective range r_P. This minimal model can be formulated as a local quantum field theory with a P-wave interaction between atom fields and a molecular field. In the two-atom sector, the model is renormalizable, but it has unphysical behavior at high energies, because there are negative-probability states with momentum scale r_P. In the sector with three atoms, two of which are identical, renormalization in some parity and angular-momentum channels involves an ultraviolet limit cycle, indicating asymptotic discrete scale invariance. The Efimov effect occurs in the unitary limit a_P^(-1/3), r_P \to 0, but this limit is unphysical because there are low-energy states with negative probability. The minimal model can be of physical relevance only at energies small compared to the energy scale set by r_P, where the effects of negative-probability states are suppressed.

Universal few-body physics in a harmonic trap

Few-body systems with resonant short-range interactions display universal properties that do not depend on the details of their structure or their interactions at short distances. In the three-body system, these properties include the existence of a geometric spectrum of three-body Efimov states and a discrete scaling symmetry. Similar universal properties appear in 4-body and possibly higher-body systems as well. We set up an effective theory for few-body systems in a harmonic trap and study the modification of universal physics for 3- and 4-particle systems in external confinement. In particular, we focus on systems where the Efimov effect can occur and investigate the dependence of the 4-body spectrum on the experimental tuning parameters.

Electric properties of the Beryllium-11 system in Halo EFT

We compute E1 transitions and electric radii in the Beryllium-11 nucleus using an effective field theory that exploits the separation of scales in this halo system. We fix the leading-order parameters of the EFT from measured data on the 1/2+ and 1/2- levels in Be-11 and the B(E1) strength for the transition between them. We then obtain predictions for the B(E1) strength for Coulomb dissociation of the Be-11 nucleus to the continuum. We also compute the charge radii of the 1/2+ and 1/2- states. Agreement with experiment within the expected accuracy of a leading-order computation in this EFT is obtained. We also discuss how next-to-leading-order (NLO) corrections involving both s-wave and p-wave neutron-Be-10 interactions affect our results, and display the NLO predictions for quantities which are free of additional short-distance operators at this order. Information on neutron-Be-10 scattering in the relevant channels is inferred.

Two- and three-body structure of the Y(4660)

We study general features of three-meson bound states using the Y(4660) as an example. Here the Y(4660) is assumed to be either a two-body bound state of the f_0(980), itself a bound state of K and Kbar, and the psi'= psi(2s), or a three-body bound state of psi', K, and Kbar. In particular, we investigate in detail the interplay of the various scales inherent in the problem, namely the f_0 binding energy, the Y binding energy, and the K-psi' scattering length. This allows us to understand under which circumstances the substructure of the f_0(980) can be neglected in the description of the Y(4660).

Pauli blocking effects and Cooper triples in three-component Fermi gases

We investigate the effect of Pauli blocking on universal two- and three-body states in the medium. Their corresponding energies are extracted from the poles of two- and three-body in-medium scattering amplitudes. Compared to the vacuum, the binding of dimer and trimer states is reduced by the medium effects. In two-body scattering, the well-known physics of Cooper pairs is recovered. In the three-body sector, we find a new class of positive energy poles which can be interpreted as Cooper triples.

Benchmark calculations for elastic fermion-dimer scattering

We present continuum and lattice calculations for elastic scattering between a fermion and a bound dimer in the shallow binding limit. For the continuum calculation we use the Skorniakov-Ter-Martirosian (STM) integral equation to determine the scattering length and effective range parameter to high precision. For the lattice calculation we use the finite-volume method of Lüscher. We take into account topological finite-volume corrections to the dimer binding energy which depend on the momentum of the dimer. After subtracting these effects, we find from the lattice calculation kappa a_fd = 1.174(9) and kappa r_fd = -0.029(13). These results agree well with the continuum values kappa a_fd = 1.17907(1) and kappa r_fd = -0.0383(3) obtained from the STM equation. We discuss applications to cold atomic Fermi gases, deuteron-neutron scattering in the spin-quartet channel, and lattice calculations of scattering for nuclei and hadronic molecules at finite volume.

Topological phases for bound states moving in a finite volume

We show that bound states moving in a finite periodic volume have an energy correction which is topological in origin and universal in character. The topological volume corrections contain information about the number and mass of the constituents of the bound states. These results have broad applications to lattice calculations involving nucleons, nuclei, hadronic molecules, and cold atoms. We illustrate and verify the analytical results with several numerical lattice calculations.

Low-energy p-d scattering and He-3 in pionless EFT

We calculate low-energy proton--deuteron scattering in the framework of pionless effective field theory. In the quartet channel, we calculate the elastic scattering phase shift up to next-to-next-to-leading order in the power counting. In the doublet channel, we perform a next-to-leading order calculation. We obtain good agreement with the available phase shift analyses down to the scattering threshold. The phase shifts in the region of non-perturbative Coulomb interactions are calculated by using an optimised integration mesh. Moreover, the Coulomb contribution to the 3He-3H binding energy difference is evaluated in first order perturbation theory. We comment on the implications of our results for the power counting of subleading three-body forces.

On the Efimov Effect in Higher Partial Waves

Using the framework of effective field theory, we present a detailed study of the Efimov effect in higher partial waves for systems of two identical particles and a third distinguishable particle. Depending on the total angular momentum $L$, the two identical particles must be bosons or fermions. We derive analytical expressions for the elastic and inelastic atom-dimer scattering cross sections as well as the atom-dimer relaxation rate at the dimer breakup threshold. For the experimentally most relevant case of P-waves, we numerically calculate the atom-dimer scattering cross sections and relaxation rates as a function of the scattering length, three-body parameter, and mass ratio for energies away from the breakup threshold.
