Non-relativistic bound states in a finite volume

We derive general results for the mass shift of bound states with angular momentum l >= 1 in a periodic cubic box in two and three spatial dimensions. Our results have applications to lattice simulations of hadronic molecules, halo nuclei, and Feshbach molecules. The sign of the mass shift can be related to the symmetry properties of the state under consideration. We verify our analytical results with explicit numerical calculations. Moreover, we comment on the relations connecting the effective range parameter, the binding momentum of a given state and the asymptotic normalization coefficient of the corresponding wave function. We give explicit expressions for this relation in the shallow binding limit.

Volume Dependence of Bound States with Angular Momentum

We derive general results for the mass shift of bound states with angular momentum l >= 1 in a finite periodic volume. Our results have direct applications to lattice simulations of hadronic molecules as well as atomic nuclei. While the binding of S-wave bound states increases at finite volume, we show that the binding of P-wave bound states decreases. The mass shift for D-wave bound states as well as higher partial waves depends on the representation of the cubic rotation group. Nevertheless, the multiplet-averaged mass shift for any angular momentum l can be expressed in a simple form, and the sign of the shift alternates for even and odd l. We verify our analytical results with explicit numerical calculations. We also show numerically that similar volume corrections appear in three-body bound states.

Neutral pion photoproduction off 3H and 3He in chiral perturbation theory

We calculate electromagnetic neutral pion production off three-nucleon bound states (3H, 3He) at threshold to leading one-loop order in the framework of chiral nuclear effective field theory. In addition, we analyze the dependence of the nuclear S-wave amplitude E_{0+} on the elementary neutron amplitude E_{0+}^{pi0 n} which in the case of 3He provides a stringent test of the prediction based on chiral perturbation theory. Uncertainties from higher order corrections are estimated.

Resonant three-body physics in two spatial dimensions

We discuss the three-body properties of identical bosons exhibiting large scattering length in two spatial dimensions. Within an effective field theory for resonant interactions, we calculate the leading non-universal corrections from the two-body effective range to bound-state and scattering observables. In particular, we compute the three-body binding energies, the boson-dimer scattering properties, and the three-body recombination rate for finite energies. We find significant effective range effects in the vicinity of the unitary limit. The implications of this result for future experiments are briefly discussed.

Efimov Physics in Atom-Dimer Scattering of Lithium-6 Atoms

Lithium-6 atoms in the three lowest hyperfine states display universal properties when the S-wave scattering length between each pair of states is large. Recent experiments reported four pronounced features arising from Efimov physics in the atom-dimer relaxation rate, namely two resonances and two local minima. We use the universal effective field theory to calculate the atom-dimer relaxation rate at zero temperature. Our results describe the four features qualitatively and imply there is a hidden local minimum. In the vicinity of the resonance at 685 G, we perform a finite temperature calculation which improves the agreement of theory and experiment. We conclude that finite temperature effects cannot be neglected in the analysis of the experimental data.

The triton in a finite volume

Understanding the volume dependence of the triton binding energy is an important step towards lattice simulations of light nuclei. We calculate the triton binding energy in a finite cubic box with periodic boundary conditions to leading order in the pionless effective field theory. Higher order corrections are estimated and the proper renormalization of our results is verified explicitly. We present results for the physical triton as well as for the pion-mass dependence of the triton spectrum near the ``critical'' pion mass, Mpi_c ~ 197 MeV, where chiral effective field theory suggests that the nucleon-nucleon scattering lengths in the singlet- and triplet-channels diverge simultaneously. An extension of the Luescher formula to the three-body system is implicit in our results.

Causality and the effective range expansion

We derive the generalization of Wigner's causality bounds and Bethe's integral formula for the effective range parameter to arbitrary dimension and arbitrary angular momentum. We also discuss the impact of these constraints on the separation of low- and high-momentum scales and universality in low-energy scattering. Some of our results were summarized earlier in a letter publication. In this work, we present full derivations and several detailed examples.

Efimov Physics in 6Li Atoms

A new narrow 3-atom loss resonance associated with an Efimov trimer crossing the 3-atom threshold has recently been discovered in a many-body system of ultracold 6Li atoms in the three lowest hyperfine spin states at a magnetic field near 895 G. O'Hara and coworkers have used measurements of the 3-body recombination rate in this region to determine the complex 3-body parameter associated with Efimov physics. Using this parameter as the input, we calculate the universal predictions for the spectrum of Efimov states and for the 3-body recombination rate in the universal region above 600 G where all three scattering lengths are large. We predict an atom-dimer loss resonance at (672 +/- 2) G associated with an Efimov trimer disappearing through an atom-dimer threshold. We also predict an interference minimum in the 3-body recombination rate at (759 +/- 1) G where the 3-spin mixture may be sufficiently stable to allow experimental study of the many-body system.

On the modification of the Efimov spectrum in a finite cubic box

Three particles with large scattering length display a universal spectrum of three-body bound states called "Efimov trimers''. We calculate the modification of the Efimov trimers of three identical bosons in a finite cubic box and compute the dependence of their energies on the box size using effective field theory. Previous calculations for positive scattering length that were perturbative in the finite volume energy shift are extended to arbitrarily large shifts and negative scattering lengths. The renormalization of the effective field theory in the finite volume is explicitly verified. Moreover, we investigate the effects of partial wave mixing and study the behavior of shallow trimers near the dimer energy. Finally, we provide numerical evidence for universal scaling of the finite volume corrections.

Proton-proton scattering above 3 GeV/c

A large set of data on proton-proton differential cross sections, analyzing powers and the double polarization parameter A_NN is analyzed employing the Regge formalism. We find that the data available at proton beam momenta from 3 GeV/c to 50 GeV/c exhibit features that are very well in line with the general characteristics of Regge phenomenology and can be described with a model that includes the rho, omega, f_2, and a_2 trajectories and single Pomeron exchange. Additional data, specifically for spin-dependent observables at forward angles, would be very helpful for testing and refining our Regge model.

Three-body problem in heteronuclear mixtures with resonant interspecies interaction

We use the zero-range approximation to study a system of two identical bosons interacting resonantly with a third particle. The method is derived from effective field theory. It reduces the three-body problem to an integral equation which we then solve numerically. We also develop an alternative approach which gives analytic solutions of the integral equation in coordinate representation in the limit of vanishing total energy. The atom-dimer scattering length, the rates of atom-dimer relaxation and three-body recombination to shallow and to deep molecular states are calculated either analytically or numerically with a well controlled accuracy for various energies as functions of the mass ratio, scattering length, and three-body parameter. We discuss in detail the relative positions of the recombination loss peaks, which in the universal limit depend only on the mass ratio. Our results have implications for ongoing and future experiments on Bose-Bose and Bose-Fermi atomic mixtures.

Scattering of an Ultrasoft Pion and the X(3872)

The identification of the X(3872) as a loosely-bound charm-meson molecule allows it to be described by an effective field theory, called XEFT, for the D^* Dbar, D Dbar^* and D Dbar pi sector of QCD at energies small compared to the pion mass. We point out that this effective field theory can be extended to the sector that includes an additional pion and used to calculate cross sections for the scattering of a pion and the X(3872). If the collision energy is much smaller than the pion mass, the cross sections are completely calculable at leading order in terms of the masses and widths of the charm mesons, pion masses, and the binding energy of the X(3872). We carry out an explicit calculation of the cross section for the breakup of the X(3872) into D^{*+} Dbar^{*0} by the scattering of a very low energy pi^+.

Range corrections for two-neutron halo nuclei in effective theory

The range corrections to the universal properties and structure of two-neutron halo nuclei are investigated within an effective quantum mechanics framework. Treating the nucleus as an effective three-body system, we make a systematic improvement upon previous calculations by calculating the linear range corrections at next-to-leading order. Since the effective ranges for the neutron-core interactions are not known, we estimate the effective range to be set by the inverse of the pion mass. We investigate the possibility of excited Efimov states in two-neutron halo nuclei and calculate their mean square radii to next-to-leading order. We find that the effective range corrections are generally small and the leading order predictions are very robust.

Electromagnetic properties of the Be-11 nucleus in Halo EFT

We compute electromagnetic properties of the Be-11 nucleus using an effective field theory that exploits the separation of scales in this halo system. We fix the parameters of the EFT from measured data on levels and scattering lengths in the Be-10 plus neutron system. We then obtain predictions for the B(E1) strength of the 1/2^+ to 1/2^- transition in the Be-11 nucleus. We also compute the charge radius of the ground state of Be-11. Agreement with experiment within the expected accuracy of a leading-order computation in this EFT is obtained. We also indicate how higher-order corrections that affect both s-wave and p-wave Be-10-neutron interactions will affect our results.

Efimov States in Nuclear and Particle Physics

Particles with resonant short-range interactions have universal properties that do not depend on the details of their structure or their interactions at short distances. In the three-body system, these properties include the existence of a geometric spectrum of three-body Efimov states and a discrete scaling symmetry leading to log-periodic dependence of observables on the scattering length. Similar universal properties appear in the four-body system and possibly higher-body systems as well. For example, universal four-body states have recently been predicted and observed in experiment. These phenomena are often referred to as "Efimov Physics". We review their theoretical description and discuss applications in different areas of physics with a special emphasis on nuclear and particle physics.

Three-body Recombination of Lithium-6 Atoms with Large Negative Scattering Lengths

The 3-body recombination rate at threshold for distinguishable atoms with large negative pair scattering lengths is calculated in the zero-range approximation. The only parameters in this limit are the 3 scattering lengths and the Efimov parameter, which can be complex valued. We provide semi-analytic expressions for the cases of 2 or 3 equal scattering lengths and we obtain numerical results for the general case of 3 different scattering lengths. Our general result is applied to the three lowest hyperfine states of Lithium-6 atoms. Comparisons with recent experiments provide indications of loss features associated with Efimov trimers near the 3-atom threshold.
