Structural, magnetic, and transport properties of Co$_2$FeSi Heusler films

We report the deposition of thin Co$_2$FeSi films by RF magnetron sputtering. Epitaxial (100)-oriented and L2$_1$ ordered growth is observed for films grown on MgO(100) substrates. (110)-oriented films on Al$_2$O$_3$(110) show several epitaxial domains in the film plane. Investigation of the magnetic properties reveals a saturation magnetization of 5.0 $mu_B/f.u.$ at low temperatures. The temperature dependence of the resistivity $rho_{xx}(T)$ exhibits a crossover from a T^3.5 law at T<50K to a T^1.65 behaviour at elevated temperatures. $rho_{xx}(H)$ shows a small anisotropic magnetoresistive effect. A weak dependence of the normal Hall effect on the external magnetic field indicates the compensation of electron and hole like contributions at the Fermi surface.

Epitaxy of thin films of the Heusler compound Co2Cr0.6Fe0.4Al

Epitaxial thin films of the highly spin polarized Heusler compound Co2Cr0.6Fe0.4Al are deposited by dc magnetron sputtering. It is shown by XRD and TEM investigations how the use of an Fe buffer layer on MgO(100) substrates supports the growth of highly ordered Co2Cr0.6Fe0.4Al at low deposition temperatures. The as grown samples show a relatively large ordered magnetic moment of mu = 3.0mu_B/f.u. providing evidence for a low level of disorder.

Epitaxial Co2Cr0.6Fe0.4Al thin films and magnetic tunneling junctions

Epitaxial thin films of the theoretically predicted half metal Co2Cr0.6Fe0.4Al were deposited by dc magnetron sputtering on different substrates and buffer layers. The samples were characterized by x-ray and electron beam diffraction (RHEED) demonstrating the B2 order of the Heusler compound with only a small partition of disorder on the Co sites. Magnetic tunneling junctions with Co2Cr0.6Fe0.4Al electrode, AlOx barrier and Co counter electrode were prepared. From the Julliere model a spin polarisation of Co2Cr0.6Fe0.4Al of 54% at T=4K is deduced. The relation between the annealing temperature of the Heusler electrodes and the magnitude of the tunneling magnetoresistance effect was investigated and the results are discussed in the framework of morphology and surface order based of in situ STM and RHEED investigations.

Epitaxial film growth and magnetic properties of Co_2FeSi

We have grown thin films of the Heusler compound Co_2FeSi by RF magnetron sputtering. On (100)-oriented MgO substrates we find fully epitaxial (100)-oriented and L2_1 ordered growth. On Al_2O_3 (11-20) substrates, the film growth is (110)-oriented, and several in-plane epitaxial domains are observed. The temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity shows a power law with an exponent of 7/2 at low temperatures. Investigation of the bulk magnetic properties reveals an extrapolated saturation magnetization of 5.0 mu_B/fu at 0 K. The films on Al_2O_3 show an in-plane uniaxial anisotropy, while the epitaxial films are magnetically isotropic in the plane. Measurements of the X-ray magnetic circular dichroism of the films allowed us to determine element specific magnetic moments. Finally we have measured the spin polarization at the surface region by spin-resolved near-threshold photoemission and found it strongly reduced in contrast to the expected bulk value of 100%. Possible reasons for the reduced magnetization are discussed.

Evidence for multiband superconductivity in the heavy fermion compound UNi2Al3

Epitaxial thin films of the heavy fermion superconductor UNi2Al3 with Tc{max}=0.98K were investigated. The transition temperature Tc depends on the current direction which can be related to superconducting gaps opening at different temperatures. Also the influence of the magnetic ordering at TN=5K on R(T) is strongly anisotropic indicating different coupling between the magnetic moments and itinerant charge carriers on the multi-sheeted Fermi surface. The upper critical field Hc2(T) suggests an unconventional spin-singlet superconducting state.

Magnetic tunneling junctions with the Heusler compound Co_2Cr_{0.6}Fe_{0.4}Al

The Heusler alloy is used as an electrode of magnetic tunneling junctions. The junctions are deposited by magnetron dc sputtering using shadow mask techniques with AlO_{x} as a barrier and cobalt as counter electrode. Measurements of the magnetoresistive differential conductivity in a temperature range between 4K and 300K are shown. An analysis of the barrier properties applying the Simmons model to the bias dependent junction conductivity is performed. VSM measurements were carried out to examine the magnetic properties of the samples.

Shift of the surface-barrier part of the irreversibility line due to columnar defects in Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_8 thin films

We report the results of studying the influence of the uranium-ion irradiation of the Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_8 thin films on the high-temperature part (close to critical temperature) of their irreversibility line. We studied irreversible properties of the films by measuring the hysteresis of nonresonant microwave absorption. The results have revealed the shift of irreversibility line towards low temperatures and magnetic fields. The effect is most significant for the films irradiated with large doses, more than 1T. This fact is in good agreement with the theoretical prediction by Koshelev and Vinokur of suppression of surface barrier by columnar defects.

Superconductivity of SrTiO_{3-δ}

Superconducting SrTiO_{3-δ} was obtained by annealing single crystalline SrTiO_3 samples in ultra high vacuum. An analysis of the V(I) characteristics revealed very small critical currents I_c which can be traced back to a unavoidable doping inhomogeneity. R(T) curves were measured for a range of magnetic fields B at I<<I_c, thereby probing only the sample regions with the highest doping level. The resulting curves B_{c2}(T) show upward curvature, both at small and strong doping. These results are discussed in the context of bipolaronic and conventional superconductivity with Fermi surface anisotropy. We conclude that the special superconducting properties of SrTiO_{3-δ} can be related to its Fermi surface and compare this finding with properties of the recently discovered superconductor MgB_2.

Correlation gap in the heavy-fermion antiferromagnet UPd_2Al_3

The optical properties of the heavy-fermion compound UPd$_2$Al$_3$ have been measured in the frequency range from 0.04 meV to 5 meV (0.3 to 40 cm$^{-1}$) at temperatures $2 {\rm K}<T< 300$ K. Below the coherence temperature $T^*\approx 50$ K, the hybridization gap opens around 10 meV. As the temperature decreases further ($T\leq 20$ K), a well pronounced pseudogap of approximately 0.2 meV develops in the optical response; we relate this to the antiferromagnetic ordering which occurs below $T_N\approx 14$ K. The frequency dependent mass and scattering rate give evidence that the enhancement of the effective mass mainly occurs below the energy which is associated to the magnetic correlations between the itinerant and localized 5f electrons. In addition to this correlation gap, we observe a narrow zero-frequency conductivity peak which at 2 K is less than 0.1 meV wide, and which contains only a fraction of the delocalized carriers. The analysis of the spectral weight infers a loss of kinetic energy associated with the superconducting transition.

The Nature of Heavy Quasiparticles in Magnetically Ordered Heavy Fermions

The optical conductivity of the heavy fermions UPd2Al3 and UPt3 has been measured in the frequency range from 10 GHz to 1.2 THz (0.04 meV to 5 meV) at temperatures 1 K < T < 300 K. In both compounds a well pronounced pseudogap of less than a meV develops in the optical response at low temperatures; we relate this to the antiferromagnetic ordering. From the energy dependence of the effective electronic mass and scattering rate we derive the energies essential for the heavy quasiparticle. We find that the enhancement of the mass mainly occurs below the energy which is related to magnetic correlations between the local magnetic moments and the itinerant electrons. This implies that the magnetic order in these compounds is the pre-requisite to the formation of the heavy quasiparticle and eventually of superconductivity.

Patterned Irradiation of YBa_2Cu_3O_(7-x) Thin Films

We present a new experiment on YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-x} (YBCO) thin films using spatially resolved heavy ion irradiation. Structures consisting of a periodic array of strong and weak pinning channels were created with the help of metal masks. The channels formed an angle of +/-45 Deg with respect to the symmetry axis of the photolithographically patterned structures. Investigations of the anisotropic transport properties of these structures were performed. We found striking resemblance to guided vortex motion as it was observed in YBCO single crystals containing an array of unidirected twin boundaries. The use of two additional test bridges allowed to determine in parallel the resistivities of the irradiated and unirradiated parts as well as the respective current-voltage characteristics. These measurements provided the input parameters for a numerical simulation of the potential distribution of the Hall patterning. In contrast to the unidirected twin boundaries in our experiment both strong and weak pinning regions are spatially extended. The interfaces between unirradiated and irradiated regions therefore form a Bose-glass contact. The experimentally observed magnetic field dependence of the transverse voltage vanishes faster than expected from the numerical simulation and we interpret this as a hydrodynamical interaction between a Bose-glass phase and a vortex liquid.

Pseudogap in the Optical Spectra of UPd_2Al_3

The in-plane optical conductivity of UPd_2Al_3 was measured at temperatures $2 {\rm K}<T<300$ K in the spectral range from 1 cm^{-1} to 40 cm^{-1} (0.14 meV to 5 meV). As the temperature decreases below 25 K a well pronounced pseudogap of 0.2 meV develops in the optical response. In addition we observe a narrow conductivity peak at zero frequency which at 2 K is less than 1 cm^{-1} wide but which contains only a fraction of the delocalized carriers. The gap in the electronic excitations might be an inherent feature of the heavy fermioin ground state.

Alternative Buffer-Layers for the Growth of SrBi2Ta2O9 on Silicon

In this work we investigate the influence of the use of YSZ and CeO2/YSZ as insulators for Metal- Ferroelectric-Insulator-Semiconductor (MFIS) structures made with SrBi2Ta2O9 (SBT). We show that by using YSZ only the a-axis oriented Pyrochlore phase could be obtained. On the other hand the use of a CeO2/YSZ double-buffer layer gave a c-axis oriented SBT with no amorphous SiO2 inter- diffusion layer. The characteristics of MFIS diodes were greatly improved by the use of the double buffer. Using the same deposition conditions the memory window could be increased from 0.3 V to 0.9 V. From the piezoelectric response, nano-meter scale ferroelectric domains could be clearly identified in SBT thin films.

Ferroelectricity and structure of BaTiO3 grown on YBa2Cu3O7-d thin films

We have investigated the crystal structure and the ferroelectric properties of BaTiO3 thin films with YBa2Cu3O7-d as the bottom and Au as the top electrode. Epitaxial heterostructures of YBa2Cu3O7-d and BaTiO3 were prepared by dc and rf sputtering, respectively. The crystal structure of the films was characterised by x-ray diffraction. The ferroelectric behaviour of the BaTiO3 films was confirmed by hysteresis loop measurements using a Sawyer Tower circuit. We obtain a coercive field of 30 kV/cm and a remanent polarisation of 1.25 \muC/cm. At sub-switching fields the capacitance of the films obeys a relation analogous to the Rayleigh law. This behaviour indicates an interaction of domain walls with randomly distributed pinning centres. At a field of 5 MV/m we calculate 3% contribution of irreversible domain wall motion to the total dielectric constant.

Perpendicular transport properties of YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-δ}/PrBa_2Cu_3O_{7-δ} superlattices

The coupling between the superconducting planes of YBa2Cu3O{7-δ}/ PrBa2Cu3O{7-δ} superlattices has been measured by c-axis transport. We show that only by changing the thickness of the superconducting YBa2Cu3O{7-δ} layers, it is possible to switch between quasi-particle and Josephson tunneling. From our data we deduce a low temperature c-axis coherence length of 0.27 nm.

c-Axis tunneling in YBa2Cu3O7-δ/PrBa2Cu3O7-δsuperlattices

In this work we report c-axis conductance measurements done on a superlattice based on a stack of 2 layers YBa2Cu3O{7-δ} and 7 layers PrBa2Cu3O{7-δ} (2:7). We find that these quasi-2D structures show no clear superconducting coupling along the c-axis. Instead, we observe tunneling with a gap of Δ_c=5.0\pm 0.5 meV for the direction perpendicular to the superconducting planes. The conductance spectrum show well defined quasi-periodic structures which are attributed to the superlattice structure. From this data we deduce a low temperature c-axis coherence length of ξ_c=0.24\pm 0.03 nm.

Universal relationship between the penetration depth and the normal-state conductivity in YBaCuO

The absolute values of the conductivity in the normal state sigma_n and of the low temperature penetration depths lambda(0) were measured for a number of different samples of the YBaCuO family. We found a striking correlation between sigma_n and 1/lambda^2, regardless of doping, oxygen reduction or defects, thus providing a simple method to predict the superconducting penetration depth and to have an estimate of the sample quality by measuring the normal-state conductivity.

Frequency dependent relaxation rate in the superconducting YBa2Cu3O{6+delta}

The submillimeter-wave 3 cm{-1} < nu < 35 cm{-1} complex conductivity of the reduced YBa2Cu3O{6+delta} film (Tc=56.5 K) was investigated for temperatures 4 K < T < 300 K and compared to the properties of the same film in the optimally doped state. The frequency dependence of the effective quasiparticle scattering rate 1/tau*(nu) was extracted from the spectra. 1/tau*(nu) is shown to be frequency independent at low frequencies and high temperatures. A gradual change to 1/tau*~nu^{1.5} law is observed as temperature decreases. In order to explain the observed temperature dependence of the low frequency spectral weight above Tc, the quasiparticle effective mass is supposed to be temperature dependent for T>Tc.
