Toroidal solitons in 3+1 dimensional integrable theories

We analyze the integrability properties of models defined on the symmetric space SU(2)/U(1) in 3+1 dimensions, using a recently proposed approach for integrable theories in any dimension. We point out the key ingredients for a theory to possess an infinite number of local conservation laws, and discuss classes of models with such property. We propose a 3+1-dimensional, relativistic invariant field theory possessing a toroidal soliton solution carrying a unit of topological charge given by the Hopf map. Construction of the action is guided by the requirement that the energy of static configuration should be scale invariant. The solution is constructed exactly. The model possesses an infinite number of local conserved currents. The method is also applied to the Skyrme-Faddeev model, and integrable submodels are proposed.

Berezinian Construction of Super-Solitons in Supersymmetric Constrained KP Hierarchies

We consider a broad class of consistently reduced Manin-Radul supersymmetric KP hierarchies (MR-SKP) which are supersymmetric analogs of the ordinary bosonic constrained KP models. Compatibility of these reductions with the MR fermionic isospectral flows is achieved via appropriate modification of the latter preserving their (anti-)commutation algebra. Unlike the general unconstrained MR-SKP case, Darboux-Backlund transformations do preserve the fermionic isospectral flows of the reduced MR-SKP hierarchies. This allows for a systematic derivation of explicit Berezinian solutions for the super-tau-functions (super-solitons) for these models.

On Grassmannian Description of the Constrained KP Hierarchy

This note develops an explicit construction of the constrained KP hierarchy within the Sato Grassmannian framework. Useful relations are established between the kernel elements of the underlying ordinary differential operator and the eigenfunctions of the associated KP hierarchy as well as between the related bilinear concomitant and the squared eigenfunction potential.

Supersymmetric KP Hierarchy: ``Ghost'' Symmetry Structure, Reductions and Darboux-Backlund Solutions

This paper studies Manin-Radul supersymmetric KP hierarchy (MR-SKP) in three related aspects: (i) We find an infinite set of additional (``ghost'') symmetry flows spanning the same (anti-)commutation algebra as the ordinary MR-SKP flows; (ii) The latter are used to construct consistent reductions of the initial unconstrained MR-SKP hierarchy which involves a nontrivial modification for the fermionic flows; (iii) For the simplest constrained MR-SKP hierarchy we show that the orbit of Darboux-Backlund transformations lies on a supersymmetric Toda lattice being a square-root of the standard one-dimensional Toda lattice, and also we find explicit Wronskian-ratio solutions for the super-tau function.

A New ``Dual'' Symmetry Structure of the KP Hierarchy

A new infinite set of commuting additional (``ghost'') symmetries is proposed for the KP-type integrable hierarchy. These symmetries allow for a Lax representation in which they are realized as standard isospectral flows. This gives rise to a new double-KP hierarchy embedding ``ghost'' and original KP-type Lax hierarchies connected to each other via a ``duality'' mapping exchanging the isospectral and ``ghost'' ``times''. A new representation of 2D Toda lattice hierarchy as a special Darboux-Backlund orbit of the double-KP hierarchy is found and parametrized entirely in terms of (adjoint) eigenfunctions of the original KP subsystem.

Vertex Operators and Solitons of Constrained KP Hierarchies

We construct the vertex operator representation for the Affine Kac-Moody $SL(M+K+1)$ algebra, which is relevant for the construction of the soliton solutions of the constrained KP hierarchies. The oscillators involved in the vertex operator construction are provided by the Heisenberg subalgebras of $SL(M+K+1)$ realized in the unconventional gradations. The well-known limiting cases are the homogeneous Heisenberg subalgebra of $SL(M+1)$ and the principal Heisenberg subalgebra of ${\hat{sl}}(K+1)$. The explicit example of $M=K=1$ is discussed in detail and the corresponding soliton solutions and tau-functions are given.

Solitons from Dressing in an Algebraic Approach to the Constrained KP Hierarchy

The algebraic matrix hierarchy approach based on affine Lie $sl (n)$ algebras leads to a variety of 1+1 soliton equations. By varying the rank of the underlying $sl (n)$ algebra as well as its gradation in the affine setting, one encompasses the set of the soliton equations of the constrained KP hierarchy. The soliton solutions are then obtained as elements of the orbits of the dressing transformations constructed in terms of representations of the vertex operators of the affine $sl (n)$ algebras realized in the unconventional gradations. Such soliton solutions exhibit non-trivial dependence on the KdV (odd) time flows and KP (odd and even) time flows which distinguishes them from the conventional structure of the Darboux-Bäcklund Wronskian solutions of the constrained KP hierarchy.

Zero Curvature Formalism for Supersymmetric Integrable Hierarchies in Superspace

We generalize the Drinfeld-Sokolov formalism of bosonic integrable hierarchies to superspace, in a way which systematically leads to the zero curvature formulation for the supersymmetric integrable systems starting from the Lax equation in superspace. We use the method of symmetric space as well as the non-Abelian gauge technique to obtain the supersymmetric integrable hierarchies of the AKNS type from the zero curvature condition in superspace with the graded algebras, sl(n+1,n), providing the Hermitian symmetric space structure.

Method of Squared Eigenfunction Potentials in Integrable Hierarchies of KP Type

The method of squared eigenfunction potentials (SEP) is developed systematically to describe and gain new information about Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) hierarchy and its reductions. Interrelation to the tau-function method is discussed in detail. The principal result, which forms the basis of our SEP method, is the proof that any eigenfunction of the general KP hierarchy can be represented as a spectral integral over the Baker-Akhiezer (BA) wave function with a spectral density expressed in terms of SEP. In fact, the spectral representations of the (adjoint) BA functions can, in turn, be considered as defining equations for the KP hierarchy. The SEP method is subsequently used to show how the reduction of the full KP hierarchy to the constrained KP hierarchies can be given entirely in terms of linear constraint equations on the pertinent tau-functions. The concept of SEP turns out to be crucial in providing a description of constrained KP hierarchies in the language of universal Sato Grassmannian and finding the non-isospectral Virasoro symmetry generators acting on the underlying tau-functions. The SEP method is used to write down generalized binary Darboux-Backlund transformations for constrained KP hierarchies whose orbits are shown to correspond to a new Toda model on a square lattice. As a result, we obtain a series of new determinant solutions for the tau-functions generalizing the known Wronskian (multi-soliton) solutions. Finally, applications to random matrix models in condensed matter physics are briefly discussed.

Manifestly Supersymmetric Lax Integrable Hierarchies

A systematic method of constructing manifestly supersymmetric $1+1$-dimensional KP Lax hierarchies is presented. Closed expressions for the Lax operators in terms of superfield eigenfunctions are obtained. All hierarchy equations being eigenfunction equations are shown to be automatically invariant under the (extended) supersymmetry. The supersymmetric Lax models existing in the literature are found to be contained (up to a gauge equivalence) in our formalism.

Constrained KP Hierarchies: Additional Symmetries, Darboux-Bäcklund Solutions and Relations to Multi-Matrix Models

This paper provides a systematic description of the interplay between a specific class of reductions denoted as \cKPrm ($r,m \geq 1$) of the primary continuum integrable system -- the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili ({\sf KP}) hierarchy and discrete multi-matrix models. The relevant integrable \cKPrm structure is a generalization of the familiar $r$-reduction of the full {\sf KP} hierarchy to the $SL(r)$ generalized KdV hierarchy ${\sf cKP}_{r,0}$. The important feature of \cKPrm hierarchies is the presence of a discrete symmetry structure generated by successive Darboux-Bäcklund (DB) transformations. This symmetry allows for expressing the relevant tau-functions as Wronskians within a formalism which realizes the tau-functions as DB orbits of simple initial solutions. In particular, it is shown that any DB orbit of a ${\sf cKP}_{r,1}$ defines a generalized 2-dimensional Toda lattice structure. Furthermore, we consider the class of truncated {\sf KP} hierarchies ({\sl i.e.}, those defined via Wilson-Sato dressing operator with a finite truncated pseudo-differential series) and establish explicitly their close relationship with DB orbits of \cKPrm hierarchies. This construction is relevant for finding partition functions of the discrete multi-matrix models. The next important step involves the reformulation of the familiar non-isospectral additional symmetries of the full {\sf KP} hierarchy so that their action on \cKPrm hierarchies becomes consistent with the constraints of the reduction. Moreover, we show that the correct modified additional symmetries are compatible with the discrete DB symmetry on the \cKPrm DB orbits. The above technical arsenal is subsequently applied to obtain complete

Virasoro Symmetry of Constrained KP Hierarchies

Additional non-isospectral symmetries are formulated for the constrained Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (\cKP) integrable hierarchies. The problem of compatibility of additional symmetries with the underlying constraints is solved explicitly for the Virasoro part of the additional symmetry through appropriate modification of the standard additional-symmetry flows for the general (unconstrained) KP hierarchy. We also discuss the special case of \cKP --truncated KP hierarchies, obtained as Darboux-Bäcklund orbits of initial purely differential Lax operators. The latter give rise to Toda-lattice-like structures relevant for discrete (multi-)matrix models. Our construction establishes the condition for commutativity of the additional-symmetry flows with the discrete Darboux-Bäcklund transformations of \cKP hierarchies leading to a new derivation of the string-equation constraint in matrix models.

Constrained KP Hierarchies: Darboux-Bäcklund Solutions and Additional Symmetries

We illustrate the basic notions of {\em additional non-isospectral symmetries} and their interplay with the discrete {\em \DB transformations} of integrable systems at the instance of {\em constrained Kadomtsev-Petviashvili} (\cKP) integrable hierarchies. As a main application we present the solution of discrete multi-matrix string models in terms of Wronskian $\t$-functions of graded $SL(m,1)$ \cKP hierarchies.

On Integrable Models and their Interrelations

We present an elementary discussion of the Calogero-Moser model. This gives us an opportunity to illustrate basic concepts of the dynamical integrable models. Some ideas are also presented regarding interconnections between integrable models based on the relation established between the Calogero-Moser model and the truncated KP hierarchy of Burgers-Hopf type.

Integrable Lax Hierarchies, their Symmetry Reductions and Multi-Matrix Models

Some new developments in constrained Lax integrable systems and their applications to physics are reviewed. After summarizing the tau function construction of the KP hierarchy and the basic concepts of the symmetry of nonlinear equations, more recent ideas dealing with constrained KP models are described. A unifying approach to constrained KP hierarchy based on graded $SL(r+n,n)$ algebra is presented and equivalence formulas are obtained for various pseudo-differential Lax operators appearing in this context. It is then shown how the Toda lattice structure emerges from constrained KP models via canonical Darboux-Bäcklund transformations. These transformations enable us to find simple Wronskian solutions for the underlying tau-functions. We also establish a relation between two-matrix models and constrained Toda lattice systems and derive from this relation expressions for the corresponding partition function.

Constrained KP Models as Integrable Matrix Hierarchies

We formulate the constrained KP hierarchy (denoted by \cKP$_{K+1,M}$) as an affine ${\widehat {sl}} (M+K+1)$ matrix integrable hierarchy generalizing the Drinfeld-Sokolov hierarchy. Using an algebraic approach, including the graded structure of the generalized Drinfeld-Sokolov hierarchy, we are able to find several new universal results valid for the \cKP hierarchy. In particular, our method yields a closed expression for the second bracket obtained through Dirac reduction of any untwisted affine Kac-Moody current algebra. An explicit example is given for the case ${\widehat {sl}} (M+K+1)$, for which a closed expression for the general recursion operator is also obtained. We show how isospectral flows are characterized and grouped according to the semisimple {\em non-regular} element $E$ of $sl (M+K+1)$ and the content of the center of the kernel of $E$.

Darboux-Backlund Solutions of SL(p,q) KP-KdV Hierarchies, Constrained Generalized Toda Lattices, and Two-Matrix String Model

We present an unifying description of the graded $SL(p,q)$ KP-KdV hierarchies, including the Wronskian construction of their tau-functions as well as the coefficients of the pertinent Lax operators, obtained via successive applications of special Darboux-Bäcklund transformations. The emerging Darboux-Bäcklund structure is identified as a constrained generalized Toda lattice system relevant for the two-matrix string model. Also, the exact Wronskian solution for the two-matrix model partition function is found.
