Two integrable classes of Emden-Fowler equations with applications in astrophysics and cosmology

We show that some Emden-Fowler (EF) equations encountered in astrophysics and cosmology belong to two EF integrable classes of the type d^2z/dχ^2=A χ^{-λ-2}z^n for λ=(n-1)/2 (class one), and λ=n+1 (class two). We find their corresponding invariants which reduce them to first order nonlinear ordinary differential equations. Using particular solutions of such EF equations, the two classes are set in the autonomous nonlinear oscillator form d^2ν/dt^2 +ad ν/dt +b(ν-ν^n)=0, where the coefficients a,b depend only on λ, n. For both classes, we write closed-form solutions in parametric form. The illustrative examples from astrophysics and general relativity correspond to two n=2 cases from class one and two, and one n=5 case from class one, all of them yielding Weierstrass elliptic solutions. It is also noticed that when n=2, EF equations can be studied using the Painlevé reduction method, since they are a particular case of equations of the type d^2z/dχ^2=F(χ)z^2, where F(χ) is the Kustaanheimo-Qvist function

Electromagnetic transmittance in alternating material-metamaterial layered structures

Using the transfer matrix method we examine the parametric behavior of the transmittance of TE and TM electromagnetic plane waves propagating in frequency range which are far from the absorption bands of a periodic multilayered system. We focus on the dependence of the transmittance on the frequency and angle of incidence of the electromagnetic wave for the case in which the periodic structure comprises alternating material-metamaterial layers of various permittivities and permeabilities. A specific example of high transmittance at any angle of incidence in the visible region of the spectrum is identified

Evolution of spherical cavitation bubbles: parametric and closed-form solutions

We present an analysis of the Rayleigh-Plesset equation for a three dimensional vacuous bubble in water. In the simplest case when the effects of surface tension are neglected, the known parametric solutions for the radius and time evolution of the bubble in terms of a hypergeometric function are briefly reviewed. By including the surface tension, we show the connection between the Rayleigh-Plesset equation and Abel's equation, and obtain the parametric rational Weierstrass periodic solutions following the Abel route. In the same Abel approach, we also provide a discussion of the nonintegrable case of nonzero viscosity for which we perform a numerical integration

Nongauge bright soliton of the nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS) equation and a family of generalized NLS equations

We present an approach to the bright soliton solution of the NLS equation from the standpoint of introducing a constant potential term in the equation. We discuss a `nongauge' bright soliton for which both the envelope and the phase depend only on the traveling variable. We also construct a family of generalized NLS equations with solitonic sech^p solutions in the traveling variable and find an exact equivalence with other nonlinear equations, such as the Korteveg-de Vries and Benjamin-Bona-Mahony equations when p=2

Existence of periodic orbits in nonlinear oscillators of Emden-Fowler form

The nonlinear pseudo-oscillator recently tackled by Gadella and Lara is mapped to an Emden-Fowler (EF) equation that is written as an autonomous two-dimensional ODE system for which we provide the phase-space analysis and the parametric solution. Through an invariant transformation we find periodic solutions to a certain class of EF equations that pass an integrability condition. We show that this condition is necessary to have periodic solutions and via the ODE analysis we also find the sufficient condition for periodic orbits. EF equations that do not pass integrability conditions can be made integrable via an invariant transformation which also allows us to construct periodic solutions to them. Two other nonlinear equations, a zero-frequency Ermakov equation and a positive power Emden-Fowler equation are discussed in the same context

The Hurst exponents of Nitzschia sp. diatom trajectories observed by light microscopy

We present the results of an experiment with light microscopy performed to capture the trajectories of live Nitzschia sp. diatoms. The time series corresponding to the motility of this kind of cells along ninety-five circular-like trajectories have been obtained and analyzed with the scaling statistical method of detrended fluctuation analysis optimized via a wavelet transform. In this way, we determined the Hurst parameters, in two orthogonal directions, which characterize the nature of the motion of live diatoms in light microscopy experiments. We have found mean values of these directional Hurst parameters between 0.70 and 0.63 with overall standard errors below 0.15. These numerical values give evidence that the motion of Nitzschia sp. diatoms is of persistent type and suggest an active cell motility with a kind of memory associated with long-range correlations on the path of their trajectories. For the collected statistics, we also find that the values of the Hurst exponents depend on the number of abrupt turns that occur in the diatom trajectory and on the type of wavelet, although their mean values do not change much

Shifted one-parameter supersymmetric family of quartic asymmetric double-well potentials

Extending our previous work (Rosu, Mancas, Chen, Ann.Phys. 343 (2014) 87-102), we define supersymmetric partner potentials through a particular Riccati solution of the form F(x)=(x-c)^2-1, where c is a real shift parameter, and work out the quartic double-well family of one-parameter isospectral potentials obtained by using the corresponding general Riccati solution. For these parametric double well potentials, we study how the localization properties of the two wells depend on the parameter of the potentials for various values of the shifting parameter. We also consider the supersymmetric parametric family of the first double-well potential in the Razavy chain of double well potentials corresponding to F(x)=(1/2)sinh 2x-2(1+sqrt 2)sinh 2x/[(1+sqrt 2) cosh 2x+1], both unshifted and shifted, to test and compare the localization properties

Ermakov Systems with Multiplicative Noise

Using the Euler-Maruyama numerical method, we present calculations of the Ermakov-Lewis invariant and the dynamic, geometric, and total phases for several cases of stochastic parametric oscillators, including the simplest case of the stochastic harmonic oscillator. The results are compared with the corresponding numerical noiseless cases to evaluate the effect of the noise. Besides, the noiseless cases are analytic and their analytic solutions are briefly presented. The Ermakov-Lewis invariant is not affected by the multiplicative noise in the three particular examples presented in this work, whereas there is a shift effect in the case of the phases

Scaling analyses based on wavelet transforms for the Talbot effect

The fractal properties of the transverse Talbot images are analysed with two well-known scaling methods, the wavelet transform modulus maxima (WTMM) and the wavelet transform multifractal detrended fluctuation analysis (WT-MFDFA). We use the widths of the singularity spectra, Delta alpha=alpha_H-alpha_min, as a characteristic feature of these Talbot images. The tau scaling exponents of the q moments are linear in q within the two methods, which proves the monofractality of the transverse diffractive paraxial field in the case of these images

Nonsingular parametric oscillators Darboux-related to the classical harmonic oscillator

Interesting nonsingular parametric oscillators which are Darboux related to the classical harmonic oscillator and have periodic dissipative/gain features are identified through a modified factorization method. The same method is applied to the upside-down (hyperbolic) `oscillator' for which the obtained Darboux partners show transient underdamped features

Note on Hawking-Unruh effects in graphene

Beltrami-shaped graphene sheets have been recently proposed as analogs of curved spacetimes with Hawking-Unruh effects detected through typical condensed matter measurements involving scanning tunneling microscopes and spectroscopy. However, such deformed sheets, if ever fabricated, will contain large strain-induced pseudomagnetic fields with important guiding effects on the motion of the electrons in the conduction band. Besides, possible surface polariton and plasmon modes are known to be important players in the radiative heat transfer which takes place in the natural near-field nanoscale experimental conditions. Therefore, we suggest here that the latter class of experiments could shed light on phenomena related to the black hole membrane paradigm instead

An alternative factorization of the quantum harmonic oscillator and two-parameter family of self-adjoint operators

We introduce an alternative factorization of the Hamiltonian of the quantum harmonic oscillator which leads to a two-parameter self-adjoint operator from which the standard harmonic oscillator, the one-parameter oscillators introduced by Mielnik, and the Hermite operator are obtained in certain limits of the parameters. In addition, a single Bernoulli-type parameter factorization which is different of the one introduced by M. A. Reyes, H. C. Rosu, and M. R. Gutierrez, Phys. Lett. A 375 (2011) 2145 is briefly discussed in the final part of this work

Eigenvalue problems, spectral parameter power series, and modern applications

In the present review we deal with the recently introduced method of spectral parameter power series (SPPS) and show how its application leads to an explicit form of the characteristic equation for different eigenvalue problems involving Sturm-Liouville equations with variable coefficients. We consider Sturm-Liouville problems on finite intervals; problems with periodic potentials involving the construction of Hill's discriminant and Floquet-Bloch solutions; quantum-mechanical spectral and transmission problems as well as the eigenvalue problems for the Zakharov-Shabat system. In all these cases we obtain a characteristic equation of the problem which in fact reduces to finding zeros of an analytic function given by its Taylor series. We illustrate the application of the method with several numerical examples which show that at present the SPPS method is the easiest in the implementation, the most accurate and efficient. We emphasize that the SPPS method is not a purely numerical technique. It gives an analytical representation both for the solution and for the characteristic equation of the problem. This representation can be approximated by different numerical techniques and for practical purposes constitutes a powerful numerical method but most important it offers additional insight into the spectral and transmission problems.

Traveling kinks in cubic nonlinear Ginzburg-Landau equations

Nonlinear cubic Euler-Lagrange equations of motion in the traveling variable are usually derived from Ginzburg-Landau free energy functionals frequently encountered in several fields of physics. Many authors considered in the past damped versions of such equations with the damping term added by hand simulating the friction due to the environment. It is known that even in this damped case kink solutions can exist. By means of a factorization method, we provide analytic formulas for several possible kink solutions of such equations of motion in the undriven and constant field driven cases, including the recently introduced Riccati parameter kinks which were not considered previously in such a context. The latter parameter controls the delay of the switching stage of the kinks

Multifractal analyses of row sum signals of elementary cellular automata

We first apply the WT-MFDFA, MFDFA, and WTMM multifractal methods to binomial multifractal time series of three different binomial parameters and find that the WTMM method indicates an enhanced difference between the fractal components than the known theoretical result. Next, we make use of the same methods for the time series of the row sum signals of the two complementary ECA pairs of rules (90,165) and (150,105) for ten initial conditions going from a single 1 in the central position up to a set of ten 1's covering the ten central positions in the first row. Since the members of the pairs are actually similar from the statistical point of view, we can check which method is the most stable numerically by recording the differences provided by the methods between the two members of the pairs for various important quantities of the scaling analyses, such as the multifractal support, the most frequent Holder exponent, and the Hurst exponent and considering as the better one the method that provides the minimum differences. According to this criterion, our results show that the MFDFA performs better than WT-MFDFA and WTMM in the case of the multifractal support, while for the other two scaling parameters the WT-MFDFA is the best. The employed set of initial conditions does not generate any specific trend in the values of the multifractal parameters

A note on the FKPP equation approached with the hyperbolic scaling

We consider the hyperbolic scaling of the FKPP equation and introduce two solutions of the action functional type in the limit of zero hyperbolic parameter. Furthermore, we show that the action functional of the Ablowitz-Zepetella kink is a special case of one of those solutions
