Bloch Solutions of Periodic Dirac Equations in SPPS Form

We provide the representation of quasi-periodic solutions of periodic Dirac equations in terms of the spectral parameter power series (SPPS) recently introduced by V.V. Kravchenko (2008,2009). We also give the SPPS form of the Dirac Hill discriminant under the Darboux nodeless transformation using the SPPS form of the discriminant and apply the results to one of Razavy's quasi-exactly solvable periodic potentials

Parametric oscillators from factorizations employing a constant-shifted Riccati solution of the harmonic oscillator

We determine the kind of parametric oscillators that are generated in the usual factorization procedure of second-order linear differential equations when one introduces a constant shift of the Riccati solution of the classical harmonic oscillator. The mathematical results show that some of these oscillators could be of physical nature. We give the solutions of the obtained second-order differential equations and the values of the shift parameter providing strictly periodic and antiperiodic solutions. We also notice that this simple problem presents parity-time (PT) symmetry. Possible applications are mentioned

Improvement and analysis of a pseudo random bit generator by means of cellular automata

In this paper, we implement a revised pseudo random bit generator based on a rule-90 cellular automaton. For this purpose, we introduce a sequence matrix H_N with the aim of calculating the pseudo random sequences of N bits employing the algorithm related to the automaton backward evolution. In addition, a multifractal structure of the matrix H_N is revealed and quantified according to the multifractal formalism. The latter analysis could help to disentangle what kind of automaton rule is used in the randomization process and therefore it could be useful in cryptanalysis. Moreover, the conditions are found under which this pseudo random generator passes all the statistical tests provided by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)

A simple circuit with dynamic logic architecture of basic logic gates

We report experimental results obtained with a circuit possessing dynamic logic architecture based on one of the theoretical schemes proposed by H. Peng and collaborators in 2008. The schematic diagram of the electronic circuit and its implementation to get different basic logic gates are displayed and discussed. In particular, we show explicitly how to get the electronic NOR, NAND, and XOR gates. The proposed electronic circuit is easy to build because it employs only resistors, operational amplifiers and comparators

Including transcription factor information in the superparamagnetic clustering of microarray data

In this work, we modify the superparamagnetic clustering algorithm (SPC) by adding an extra weight to the interaction formula that considers which genes are regulated by the same transcription factor. With this modified algorithm that we call SPCTF, we analyze Spellman et al. microarray data for cell cycle genes in yeast, and find clusters with a higher number of elements compared with those obtained with the SPC algorithm. Some of the incorporated genes by using SPCFT were not detected at first by Spellman et al. but were later identified by other studies, whereas several genes still remain unclassified. The clusters composed by unidentified genes were analyzed with MUSA, the motif finding using an unsupervised approach algorithm, and this allow us to select the clusters whose elements contain cell cycle transcription factor binding sites as clusters worth of further experimental studies because they would probably lead to new cell cycle genes. Finally, our idea of introducing available information about transcription factors to optimize the gene classification could be implemented for other distance-based clustering algorithms

Adsorption of molecular gases on porous materials in the SAFT-VR approximation

A simple molecular thermodynamic approach is applied to the study of the adsorption of gases of chain molecules on solid surfaces. We use a model based on the Statistical Associating Fluid Theory for Variable Range (SAFT-VR) potentials [A. Gil-Villegas, A. Galindo, P. J. Whitehead, S. J. Mills, G. Jackson, A. N. Burgess, J. Chem. Phys. 106 (1997) 4168] that we extend by including a quasi-two-dimensional approximation to describe the adsorption properties of this type of real gases [A. Martinez, M. Castro, C. McCabe, A. Gil-Villegas, J. Chem. Phys. 126 (2007) 074707]. The model is applied to ethane, ethylene, propane, and carbon dioxide adsorbed on activated carbon and silica gel, which are porous media of significant industrial interest. We show that the adsorption isotherms obtained by means of the present SAFT-VR modeling are in fair agreement with the experimental results provided in the literature

Detection of mixed-culture growth in the total biomass data by wavelet transforms

We have shown elsewhere that the presence of mixed-culture growth of microbial species in fermentation processes can be detected with high accuracy by employing the wavelet transform. This is achieved because the crosses in the different growth processes contributing to the total biomass signal appear as singularities that are very well evidenced through their singularity cones in the wavelet transform. However, we used very simple two-species cases. In this work, we extend the wavelet method to a more complicated illustrative fermentation case of three microbial species for which we employ several wavelets of different number of vanishing moments in order to eliminate possible numerical artifacts. Working in this way allows to filter in a more precise way the numerical values of the Hölder exponents. Therefore, we were able to determine the characteristic Hölder exponents for the corresponding crossing singularities of the microbial growth processes and their stability logarithmic scale ranges up to the first decimal in the value of the characteristic exponents. Since calibrating the mixed microbial growth by means of their Hölder exponents could have potential industrial applications, the dependence of the Hölder exponents on the kinetic and physical parameters of the growth models remains as a future experimental task

Spectral parameter power series representation for Hill's discriminant

We establish a series representation of the Hill discriminant based on the spectral parameter power series (SPPS) recently introduced by V. Kravchenko. We also show the invariance of the Hill discriminant under a Darboux transformation and employing the Mathieu case the feasibility of this type of series for numerical calculations of the eigenspectrum

A note on Verhulst's logistic equation and related logistic maps

We consider the Verhulst logistic equation and a couple of forms of the corresponding logistic maps. For the case of the logistic equation we show that using the general Riccati solution only changes the initial conditions of the equation. Next, we consider two forms of corresponding logistic maps reporting the following results. For the map x_{n+1} = rx_n(1 - x_n) we propose a new way to write the solution for r = -2 which allows better precision of the iterative terms, while for the map x_{n+1}-x_n = rx_n(1 - x_{n+1}) we show that it behaves identically to the logistic equation from the standpoint of the general Riccati solution, which is also provided herein for any value of the parameter r.

Periodic Sturm-Liouville problems related to two Riccati equations of constant coefficients

We consider two closely related Riccati equations of constant parameters whose particular solutions are used to construct the corresponding class of supersymmetrically-coupled second-order differential equations. We solve analytically these parametric periodic problems along the positive real axis. Next, the analytically solved model is used as a case study for a powerful numerical approach that is employed here for the first time in the investigation of the energy band structure of periodic not necessarily regular potentials. The approach is based on the well-known self-matching procedure of James (1949) and implements the spectral parameter power series solutions introduced by Kravchenko (2008). We obtain additionally an efficient series representation of the Hill discriminant based on Kravchenko's series

A simple circuit realization of the tent map

We present a very simple electronic implementation of the tent map, one of the best-known discrete dynamical systems. This is achieved by using integrated circuits and passive elements only. The experimental behavior of the tent map electronic circuit is compared with its numerical simulation counterpart. We find that the electronic circuit presents fixed points, periodicity, period doubling, chaos and intermittency that match with high accuracy the corresponding theoretical values

Multifractal properties of elementary cellular automata in a discrete wavelet approach of MF-DFA

In 2005, Nagler and Claussen (Phys. Rev. E 71 (2005) 067103) investigated the time series of the elementary cellular automata (ECA) for possible (multi)fractal behavior. They eliminated the polynomial background at^b through the direct fitting of the polynomial coefficients a and b. We here reconsider their work eliminating the polynomial trend by means of the multifractal-based detrended fluctuation analysis (MF-DFA) in which the wavelet multiresolution property is employed to filter out the trend in a more speedy way than the direct polynomial fitting and also with respect to the wavelet transform modulus maxima (WTMM) procedure. In the algorithm, the discrete fast wavelet transform is used to calculate the trend as a local feature that enters the so-called details signal. We illustrate our result for three representative ECA rules: 90, 105, and 150. We confirm their multifractal behavior and provide our results for the scaling parameters

Solutions of the Perturbed KDV Equation for Convecting Fluids by Factorizations

In this paper, we obtain some new explicit travelling wave solutions of the perturbed KdV equation through recent factorization techniques that can be performed when the coefficients of the equation fulfill a certain condition. The solutions are obtained by using a two-step factorization procedure through which the perturbed KdV equation is reduced to a nonlinear second order differential equation, and to some Bernoulli and Abel type differential equations whose solutions are expressed in terms of the exponential and Weierstrass functions

An amplitude-phase (Ermakov-Lewis) approach for the Jackiw-Pi model of bilayer graphene

In the context of bilayer graphene we use the simple gauge model of Jackiw and Pi to construct its numerical solutions in powers of the bias potential V according to a general scheme due to Kravchenko. Next, using this numerical solutions, we develop the Ermakov-Lewis approach for the same model. This leads us to numerical calculations of the Lewis-Riesenfeld phases that could be of forthcoming experimental interest for bilayer graphene. We also present a generalization of the Ioffe-Korsch nonlinear Darboux transformation

Riccati-parameter solutions of nonlinear second-order ODEs

It has been proven by Rosu and Cornejo-Perez in 2005 that for some nonlinear second-order ODEs it is a very simple task to find one particular solution once the nonlinear equation is factorized with the use of two first-order differential operators. Here, it is shown that an interesting class of parametric solutions is easy to obtain if the proposed factorization has a particular form, which happily turns out to be the case in many problems of physical interest. The method that we exemplify with a few explicitly solved cases consists in using the general solution of the Riccati equation, which contributes with one parameter to this class of parametric solutions. For these nonlinear cases, the Riccati parameter serves as a `growth' parameter from the trivial null solution up to the particular solution found through the factorization procedure

Application of multifractal wavelet analysis to spontaneous fermentation processes

An algorithm is presented here to get more detailed information, of mixed culture type, based exclusively on the biomass concentration data for fermentation processes. The analysis is performed with only the on-line measurements of the redox potential being available. It is a two-step procedure which includes an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) that relates the redox potential to the biomass concentrations in the first step. Next, a multifractal wavelet analysis is performed using the biomass estimates of the process. In this context, our results show that the redox potential is a valuable indicator of microorganism metabolic activity during the spontaneous fermentation. In this paper, the detailed design of the multifractal wavelet analysis is presented, as well as its direct experimental application at the laboratory level

An algorithm for real-time estimation of Mezcal fermentation parameters based on redox potential measurements

We present an algorithm for the continuous monitoring of the biomass and ethanol concentrations and moreover the kinetic rate in the Mezcal fermentation process. This algorithm performs its task having only available the on-line measurements of the redox potential. The procedure includes an artificial neural network (ANN) that relates the redox potential to the ethanol and biomass concentrations. Then a nonlinear-observer-based algorithm uses the biomass estimations to infer the kinetic rate of this fermentation process. The method shows that the redox potential is a valuable indicator of microorganism metabolic activity during the Mezcal fermentation. In addition, the estimated kinetic rate can be considered as a direct evidence of the presence of mixed culture growth in the process. In this work, the detailed design of the software-sensor is presented, as well as its experimental application at the laboratory level

Supersymmetric free-damped oscillators: Adaptive observer estimation of the Riccati parameter

A supersymmetric class of free damped oscillators with three parameters has been obtained in 1998 by Rosu and Reyes through the factorization of the Newton equation. The supplementary parameter is the integration constant of the general Riccati solution. The estimation of the latter parameter is performed here by employing the recent adaptive observer scheme of Besancon et al., but applied in a nonstandard form in which a time-varying quantity containing the unknown Riccati parameter is estimated first. Results of computer simulations are presented to illustrate the good feasibility of this approach for a case in which the estimation is not easily accomplished by other means
