Riccati nonhermiticity with application to the Morse potential

A supersymmetric one-dimensional matrix procedure similar to relationships of the same type between Dirac and Schrodinger equations in particle physics is described at the general level. By this means we are able to introduce a nonhermitic Hamiltonian having the imaginary part proportional to the solution of a Riccati equation of the Witten type. The procedure is applied to the exactly solvable Morse potential introducing in this way the corresponding nonhermitic Morse problem. A possible application is to molecular diffraction in evanescent waves over nanostructured surfaces

Nonlinear second order ODE's: Factorizations and particular solutions

We present particular solutions for the following important nonlinear second order differential equations: modified Emden, generalized Lienard, convective Fisher, and generalized Burgers-Huxley. For the latter two equations these solutions are obtained in the travelling frame. All these particular solutions are the result of extending a simple and efficient factorization method that we developed in Phys. Rev. E 71 (2005) 046607

Three-step master equation: class of parametric stationary solutions

We examine the three-step master equation from the standpoint of the general solution of the associated discrete Riccati equation. We report by this means stationary master solutions depending on a free constant parameter, denoted by D, that should be negative in order to assure the positivity of the solution. These solutions correspond to different discrete Markov processes characterized by the value of D, which is related to specific renormalizations of the transition rates of the chain of states

Supersymmetric pairing of kinks for polynomial nonlinearities

We show how one can obtain kink solutions of ordinary differential equations with polynomial nonlinearities by an efficient factorization procedure directly related to the factorization of their nonlinear polynomial part. We focus on reaction-diffusion equations in the travelling frame and damped-anharmonic-oscillator equations. We also report an interesting pairing of the kink solutions, a result obtained by reversing the factorization brackets in the supersymmetric quantum mechanical style. In this way, one gets ordinary differential equations with a different polynomial nonlinearity possessing kink solutions of different width but propagating at the same velocity as the kinks of the original equation. This pairing of kinks could have many applications. We illustrate the mathematical procedure with several important cases, among which the generalized Fisher equation, the FitzHugh-Nagumo equation, and the polymerization fronts of microtubules

Classical harmonic oscillator with Dirac-like parameters and possible applications

We obtain a class of parametric oscillation modes that we call K-modes with damping and absorption that are connected to the classical harmonic oscillator modes through the "supersymmetric" one-dimensional matrix procedure similar to relationships of the same type between Dirac and Schroedinger equations in particle physics. When a single coupling parameter, denoted by K, is used, it characterizes both the damping and the dissipative features of these modes. Generalizations to several K parameters are also possible and lead to analytical results. If the problem is passed to the physical optics (and/or acoustics) context by switching from the oscillator equation to the corresponding Helmholtz equation, one may hope to detect the K-modes as waveguide modes of specially designed waveguides and/or cavities

Barotropic FRW cosmologies with a Dirac-like parameter

Using the known connection between Schroedinger-like equations and Dirac-like equations in the supersymmetric context, we discuss an extension of FRW barotropic cosmologies in which a Dirac mass-like parameter is introduced. New Hubble cosmological parameters H_K(eta) depending on the Dirac-like parameter are plotted and compared with the standard Hubble case H_0(eta). The new H_K(eta) are complex quantities. The imaginary part is a supersymmetric way of introducing dissipation and instabilities in the barotropic FRW hydrodynamics

Cyclotomic quantum clock

In the wake of our recent work on cyclotomic effects in quantum phase locking [M. Planat and H. C. Rosu, Phys. Lett. A 315, 1 (2003)], we briefly discuss here a cyclotomic extension of the Salecker and Wigner quantum clock. We also hint on a possible cyclotomic structure of time at the Planck scales

Cyclotomy and Ramanujan sums in quantum phase locking

Phase-locking governs the phase noise in classical clocks through effects described in precise mathematical terms. We seek here a quantum counterpart of these effects by working in a finite Hilbert space. We use a coprimality condition to define phase-locked quantum states and the corresponding Pegg-Barnett type phase operator. Cyclotomic symmetries in matrix elements are revealed and related to Ramanujan sums in the theory of prime numbers. The employed mathematical procedures also emphasize the isomorphism between algebraic number theory and the theory of quantum entanglement

Quantum hamiltonians and prime numbers

A short review of Schroedinger hamiltonians for which the spectral problem has been related in the literature to the distribution of the prime numbers is presented here. We notice a possible connection between prime numbers and centrifugal inversions in black holes and suggest that this remarkable link could be directly studied within trapped Bose-Einstein condensates. In addition, when referring to the factorizing operators of Pitkanen and Castro and collaborators, we perform a mathematical extension allowing a more standard supersymmetric approach

Unruh effect as particular Frenet-Serret vacuum radiation and detection proposals

The paradigmatic Unruh radiation is an ideal and simple case of stationary scalar vacuum radiation patterns related to worldlines defined as Frenet-Serret curves. We briefly review the corresponding body of theoretical literature as well as the proposals that have been suggested to detect these types of quantum field radiation patterns

Transform of Riccati equation of constant coefficients through fractional procedure

We use a particular fractional generalization of the ordinary differential equations that we apply to the Riccati equation of constant coefficients. By this means the latter is transformed into a modified Riccati equation with the free term expressed as a power of the independent variable which is of the same order as the order of the applied fractional derivative. We provide the solutions of the modified equation and employ the results for the case of the cosmological Riccati equation of FRW barotropic cosmologies that has been recently introduced by Faraoni

One-parameter nonrelativistic supersymmetry for microtubules

The one-parameter nonrelativistic supersymmetry of Mielnik [J. Math. Phys. 25, 3387 (1984)] is applied to the simple supersymmetric model of Caticha [Phys. Rev. A 51, 4264 (1995)] in the form used by Rosu [Phys. Rev. E 55, 2038 (1997)] for microtubules. By this means, we introduce Montroll double-well potentials with singularities that move along the positive or negative traveling direction depending on the sign of the free parameter of Mielnik's method. Possible interpretations of the singularity are either microtubule associated proteins (motors) or structural discontinuities in the arrangement of the tubulin molecules

We review the corresponding body of literature as well as the experimental proposals that have been suggested to detect these types of quantum field radiation patterns. Finally, we comment on a few other topics related to the Unruh effect

One-parameter isospectral special functions

Using a combination of the ladder operators of Pina [Rev. Mex. Fis. 41 (1995) 913] and the parametric operators of Mielnik [J. Math. Phys. 25 (1984) 3387] we introduce second order linear differential equations whose eigenfunctions are isospectral to the special functions of the mathematical physics and illustrate the method with several key examples

Second-order linear differential equations associated to a Riccati equation of constant coefficients

We present several second-order linear differential equations that are associated to a particular Riccati equation with only one constant parameter in its coefficients through the technique of supersymmetric factorizations and through a Dirac-like procedure. The latter approach is a minimal extension of the results obtained with the first technique in the sense that it includes up to two more constant parameters

Linear second-order differential equations for barotropic FRW cosmologies

Simple linear second-order differential equations have been written down for FRW cosmologies with barotropic fluids by Faraoni. His results have been extended by Rosu, who employed techniques belonging to nonrelativistic supersymmetry to obtain time-dependent adiabatic indices. Further extensions are presented here using the known connection between the linear second-order differential equations and Dirac-like equations in the same supersymmetric context. These extensions are equivalent to adding an imaginary part to the adiabatic index which is proportional to the mass parameter of the Dirac spinor. The natural physical interpretation of the imaginary part is related to the particular dissipation and instabilities of the barotropic FRW hydrodynamics that are introduced by means of this supersymmetric scheme
