$Fe_{0.5}Cu_{0.5}(Ba_{1-x}Sr_{x})_2YCu_2O_{7+δ}$ ($x$ = 0, 0.5 and 1) superconductors prepared by high pressure synthesis

In this paper, the $Fe$-containing superconductors $Fe_{0.5}Cu_{0.5}Ba_2YCu_2O_{7+δ}$, $Fe_{0.5}Cu_{0.5}BaSrYCu_2O_{7+δ}$ and $Fe_{0.5}Cu_{0.5}Sr_2YCu_2O_{7+δ}$ were successfully prepared by common solid-state reaction followed with a procedure of high pressure synthesis. The structural change and superconducting properties in $(Fe_xCu_{1-x})BaSrYCu_2O_{7+δ}$ ($x$ = 0 $\sim$ 1.0) systems were also investigated. Annealing experiments indicate that the occurrence of superconductivity in $Fe_{0.5}Cu_{0.5}(Ba_{1-x}Sr_{x})_2YCu_2O_{7+δ}$ ($x$ = 0, 0.5 and 1) systems is mainly induced by the procedure of high pressure synthesis, which causes the increase of oxygen content and the redistribution of $Fe$ atoms between $Cu(1)$ and $Cu(2)$ sites, but not from possible secondary phase of $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-δ}$, $YBaSrCu_3O_{7-δ}$ or $YSr_2Cu_3O_{7-δ}$ superconductors.

HST NICMOS Images of the HH 7/11 Outflow in NGC1333

We present near infrared images in H2 at 2.12um of the HH 7/11 outflow and its driving source SVS 13 taken with HST NICMOS 2 camera, as well as archival Ha and [SII] optical images obtained with the WFPC2 camera. The NICMOS high angular resolution observations confirm the nature of a small scale jet arising from SVS 13, and resolve a structure in the HH 7 working surface that could correspond to Mach disk H2 emission. The H2 jet has a length of 430 AU (at a distance of 350 pc), an aspect ratio of 2.2 and morphologically resembles the well known DG Tau optical micro-jet. The kinematical age of the jet (approx. 10 yr) coincides with the time since the last outburst from SVS 13. If we interpret the observed H2 flux density with molecular shock models of 20-30 km/s, then the jet has a density as high as 1.e+5 cc. The presence of this small jet warns that contamination by H2 emission from an outflow in studies searching for H2 in circumstellar disks is possible. At the working surface, the smooth H2 morphology of the HH 7 bowshock indicates that the magnetic field is strong, playing a major role in stabilizing this structure. The H2 flux density of the Mach disk, when compared with that of the bowshock, suggests that its emission is produced by molecular shocks of less than 20 km/s. The WFPC2 optical images display several of the global features already inferred from groundbased observations, like the filamentary structure in HH 8 and HH 10, which suggests a strong interaction of the outflow with its cavity. The H2 jet is not detected in {SII] or Ha, however, there is a small clump at approx. 5'' NE of SVS 13 that could be depicting the presence either of a different outburst event or the north edge of the outflow cavity.

Raman scattering, X-ray photoemission spectra and superconductivity of a tiny Ag diffusion to MgCNi3

The tiny Ag diffusion to MgCNi3 has been prepared by solid states reaction. Its structure was characterized by X-ray diffractometer (XRD). The results show that a small mount of Ag substitute for Ni sites, and much of Ag are in vacancy sites of the MgCNi3. We have further studied the surface properties of Ag-MgCNi3 using Raman scattering spectra, and X-ray photoemission spectra (XPS). Raman spectroscopy shows that the Ag-MgCNi3 has a special Raman peak around 842.1 cm-1 compared to that of C. The superconductor transition temperature (about 6.6 K) of Ag-MgCNi3 was lower than that of pure MgCNi3. It was interpreted properly by the conventional BCS phonon mechanism.

Superconducting properties and c-axis superstructure of Mg1-xAlxB2

The superconducting and structural properties of a series of Mg1-xAlxB2 samples have been investigated. X-ray diffraction results confirmed the existence of a structural transition associated with the significant change in inter-boron layer distance as reported previously by Slusky et al. Moreover,transmission-electron-microscopy observations revealed the existence of a superstructure with doubled lattice constant along the c-axis direction. We propose that this superstructure is essentially related to the structural transition. The modifications of superconducting transition temperature Tc, the normal state resistivity, and the upper critical field Bc2 by Al doping are discussed in terms of Al-substitution induced changes in the electronic structure at the Fermi energy.

Irreversibility line of the MgB$_{2}$ superconductor

Magneto-resistivity of a c-axis oriented MgB$_{2}$ thin film was studied in perpendicular and parallel magnetic fields up to $\sim $23 T with temperatures down to 0.38 K. Resistive critical magnetic fields were determined. Large separations between irreversibility lines and upper critical magnetic fields are observed. An effective quantum parameter as a function of temperature is proposed to explain the separations under the theoretical framework of quantum fluctuations, in good agreement with our experimental and previously published experimental data.

Effect of Mg and C contents in MgCNi3, and structure and superconductivity of MgCNi3-xCox

The effect of Mg and C contents on TC in MgCNi3, and structure and superconductivity of MgCNi3-xCox were studied. It is found that the excess of Mg and C in initial material mixture is favorable to improve TC and obtain single-phase samples. For preparing MgCNi3 superconductor, the optimum composition of starting materials is MgC1.45Ni3 with 20wt.% excess of Mg of the stoichiometric composition. In MgCNi3-xCox system, a continuous solid solution is formed, lattice parameter decreases slightly and TC decreases obviously with increasing x. A suppression of superconductivity is observed due to the substitution of Co (Mn) for Ni. The suppression effect is smaller for the substitution of Co than that of Mn.

Preparation and Superconductivity of a MgB2 Superconducting Tape

A MgB2 superconducting tape has been successfully prepared by a new way of boron diffusion into Mg tape. This tape superconductor has a Tc of 39 K with a sharp transition width of 0.4 K, high bulk critical current density jc of 6.7*10^5 A/cm^2 in zero field at 6 K, higher irreversibility line comparing to that of a high pressure synthesized bulk sample and very small crystalline grain with size in the scale of 10-200 nm.

The Initial Mass Function of Low-Mass Stars and Brown Dwarfs in Young Clusters

We have obtained images of the Trapezium Cluster (140" x 140"; 0.3 pc x 0.3 pc) with the Hubble Space Telescope Near-Infrared Camera and Multi-Object Spectrometer (NICMOS). Combining these data with new ground-based K-band spectra (R=800) and existing spectral types and photometry and the models of D'Antona & Mazzitelli, we find that the distributions of ages of comparable samples of stars in the Trapezium, rho Oph, and IC 348 indicate median ages of \~0.4 Myr for the first two regions and ~1-2 Myr for the latter. The low-mass IMFs in these sites of clustered star formation are similar over a wide range of stellar densities and other environmental conditions. With current data, we cannot rule out modest variations in the substellar mass functions among these clusters. We then make the best estimate of the true form of the IMF in the Trapezium by using the evolutionary models of Baraffe et al. and an empirically adjusted temperature scale and compare this mass function to recent results for the Pleiades and the field. All of these data are consistent with an IMF that is flat or rises slowly from the substellar regime to about 0.6 Msun, and then rolls over into a power law that continues from about 1 Msun to higher masses with a slope similar to or somewhat larger than the Salpeter value of 1.35. For the Trapezium, this behavior holds from our completeness limit of ~0.02 Msun and probably, after a modest completeness correction, even from 0.01-0.02 Msun. These data include ~50 likely brown dwarfs. We test the predictions of theories of the IMF against various properties of the observed IMF.

Hadron Masses from the Valence Approximation to Lattice QCD

We evaluate pseudoscalar, vector, spin 1/2 and spin 3/2 baryon masses predicted by lattice QCD with Wilson quarks in the valence (quenched) approximation for a range of different values of lattice spacing, lattice volume and quark mass. Extrapolating these results to physical quark mass, then to zero lattice spacing and infinite volume we obtain values for eight mass ratios. We also determine the zero lattice spacing, infinite volume limit of an alternate set of five quantities found without extrapolation in quark mass. Both sets of predictions differ from the corresponding observed values by amounts consistent with the predicted quantities' statistical uncertainties.

The scalar and tensor glueballs in the valence approximation

We evaluate the infinite volume, continuum limit of $0^{++}$ and $2^{++}$ glueball masses in the valence approximation. We find $m_{0^{++}} = 1740 \pm 71 $~MeV and $m_{2^{++}} = 2359 \pm 128 $~MeV, consistent with the interpretation of $f_0 ( 1710 )$ as the lightest scalar glueball.

Meson Decay Constants from the Valence Approximation to Lattice QCD

We evaluate $f_π/ m_ρ$, $f_K/ m_ρ$, $1/f_ρ$, and $ m_ϕ/(f_ϕ m_ρ)$, extrapolated to physical quark mass, zero lattice spacing and infinite volume, for lattice QCD with Wilson quarks in the valence (quenched) approximation. The predicted ratios differ from experiment by amounts ranging from 12\% to 17\% equivalent to between 0.9 and 2.8 times the corresponding statistical uncertainties.

Meson Decay Constant Predictions of the Valence Approximation to Lattice QCD

We evaluate $f_π/ m_ρ$, $f_K/ m_ρ$, $1/f_ρ$, and $ m_ϕ/(f_ϕ m_ρ)$, extrapolated to physical quark mass, zero lattice spacing and infinite volume, for lattice QCD with Wilson quarks in the valence (quenched) approximation. The predicted $m_ϕ/(f_ϕ m_ρ)$ differs from experiment by less than its statistical uncertainty of approximately 15\%. The other three constants are 10\% to 20\% below experiment, equivalent to between one and two times the corresponding statistical uncertainties.
