Correlation effects of exchange splitting and coexistence of spin-density-wave and superconductivity in single crystalline Sr1-xKxFe2As2

The nature of spin-density wave and its relation with superconductivity are crucial issues in the newly discovered Fe-based high temperature superconductors. Particularly it is unclear whether the superconducting phase and spin density wave (SDW) are truly exclusive from each other as suggested by certain experiments. With angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we here report exchange splittings of the band structures in Sr1-xKxFe2As2 (x=0,0.1,0.2), and the non-rigid-band behaviors of the splitting. Our data on single crystalline superconducting samples unambiguously prove that SDW and superconductivity could coexist in iron-pnictides.

Magnetic phase diagram in Eu$_{1-x}$La$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$ single crystals

We have systematically measured resistivity, susceptibility and specific heat under different magnetic fields (H) in Eu$_{1-x}$La$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$ single crystals. It is found that a metamagnetic transition from A-type antiferromagnetism to ferromagnetism occurs at a critical field for magnetic sublattice of $Eu^{2+}$. The jump of specific heat is suppressed and shifts to low temperature with increasing H up to the critical value, then shifts to high temperature with further increasing H. Such behavior supports the metamagnetic transition. Detailed H-T phase diagrams for x=0 and 0.15 crystals are given, and possible magnetic structure is proposed. Magnetoresistance measurements indicate that there exists a strong coupling between local moment of $Eu^{2+}$ and charge in Fe-As layer. These results are very significant to understand the underlying physics of FeAs superconductors.

Coexistence of the spin-density-wave and superconductivity in the (Ba,K)Fe2As2

The relation between the spin-density-wave (SDW) and superconducting order is a central topic in current research on the FeAs-based high Tc superconductors. Conflicting results exist in the LaFeAs(O,F)-class of materials, for which whether the SDW and superconductivity are mutually exclusive or they can coexist has not been settled. Here we show that for the (Ba,K)Fe2As2 system, the SDW and superconductivity can coexist in an extended range of compositions. The availability of single crystalline samples and high value of the energy gaps would make the materials a model system to investigate the high Tc ferropnictide superconductivity.

Superconductivity induced by cobalt doping in iron-based oxyarsenides

Chemical doping has recently become a very important strategy to induce superconductivity especially in complex compounds. Distinguished examples include Ba-doped La$_2$CuO$_4$ (the first high temperature superconductor), K-doped BaBiO$_3$, K-doped C$_{60}$ and Na$_{x}$CoO$_{2}\cdot y$H$_{2}$O. The most recent example is F-doped LaFeAsO, which leads to a new class of high temperature superconductors. One notes that all the above dopants are non-magnetic, because magnetic atoms generally break superconducting Cooper pairs. In addition, the doping site was out of the (super)conducting structural unit (layer or framework). Here we report that superconductivity was realized by doping magnetic element cobalt into the (super)conducting-active Fe$_2$As$_2$ layers in LaFe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$AsO. At surprisingly small Co-doping level of $x$=0.025, the antiferromagnetic spin-density-wave transition in the parent compound is completely suppressed, and superconductivity with $T_c\sim $ 10 K emerges. With increasing Co content, $T_c$ shows a maximum of 13 K at $x\sim 0.075$, and then drops to below 2 K at $x$=0.15. This result suggests essential differences between previous cuprate superconductor and the present iron-based arsenide one.

Different resistivity response to spin density wave and superconductivity at 20 K in $Ca_{1-x}Na_xFe_2As_2$

We report that intrinsic transport and magnetic properties, and their anisotropy from high quality single crystal $CaFe_2As_2$. The resistivity anisotropy ($ρ_c/ρ_{ab}$) is $\sim 50 $, and less than 150 of $BaFe_2As_2$, which arises from the strong coupling along c-axis due to an apparent contraction of about 0.13 nm compared to $BaFe_2As_2$. Temperature independent anisotropy indicates that the transport in ab plane and along c-axis direction shares the same scattering mechanism. In sharp contrast to the case of parent compounds $ROFeAs$ (R=rare earth) and $MFe_2As_2$ (M=Ba and Sr), spin-density-wave (SDW) ordering (or structural transition) leads to a steep increase of resistivity in $CaFe_2As_2$. Such different resistivity response to SDW ordering is helpful to understand the role played by SDW ordering in Fe-based high-$T_c$ superconductors. The susceptibility behavior is very similar to that observed in single crystal $BaFe_2As_2$. A linear temperature dependent susceptibility occurs above SDW transition of about 165 K. Partial substitution of Na for Ca suppresses the SWD ordering (anomaly in resistivity) and induces occurrence of superconductivity at $\sim 20$ K.

Log-T divergence and Insulator-to-Metal Crossover in the normal state resistivity of fluorine doped SmFeAsO1-xFx

We report the resistivity of a series of fluorine-doped SmFeAsO1-xFx polycrystalline superconductors in magnetic fields up to 60T. For underdoped samples (x < 0.15), the low temperature resistive state is characterized by pronounced magneto-resistance and a resistive upturn at low temperatures. The "insulating behavior" is characterized by a log-T divergence observed over a decade in temperature. In contrast, the normal state for samples with doping x > 0.15 display metallic behavior with little magnetoresistance, where intense magnetic fields broaden the superconducting transition rather than suppress Tc. The location of the insulator-to metal crossover coincides with the reported suppression of the structural phase transition (SPT)in the phase diagram for SmFeAsO1-xFx series.

Superconductivity induced by oxygen deficiency in Sr-doped LaOFeAs

We synthesized Sr-doped $La_{0.85}Sr_{0.15}OFeAs$ sample with single phase, and systematically studied the effect of oxygen deficiency in the Sr-doped LaOFeAs system. It is found that substitution of Sr for La indeed induces the hole carrier evidenced by positive thermoelectric power (TEP), but no bulk superconductivity is observed. The superconductivity can be realized by annealing the as-grown sample in vacuum to produce the oxygen deficiency. With increasing the oxygen deficiency, the superconducting transition temperature ($T_c$) increases and maximum $T_c$ reaches about 26 K the same as that in La(O,F)FeAs. TEP dramatically changes from positive to negative in the nonsuperconducting as-grown sample to the superconducting samples with oxygen deficiency. While $R_H$ is always negative for all samples (even for Sr-doped as grown sample). It suggests that the $La_{0.85}Sr_{0.15}O_{1-δ}FeAs$ is still electron-type superconductor.

Transport properties and superconductivity in $Ba_{1-x}M_xFe_2As_2$ (M=La and K) with double FeAs layers

We synthesized the samples $Ba_{1-x}M_xFe_2As_2$ (M=La and K) with $ThCr_2Si_2$-type structure. These samples were systematically characterized by resistivity, thermoelectic power (TEP) and Hall coefficient ($R_H$). $BaFe_2As_2$ shows an anomaly in resistivity at about 140 K. Substitution of La for Ba leads to a shift of the anomaly to low temperature, but no superconducting transition is observed. Potassium doping leads to suppression of the anomaly in resistivity and induces superconductivity at 38 K as reported by Rotter et al.\cite{rotter}. The Hall coefficient and TEP measurements indicate that the TEP is negative for $BaFe_2As_2$ and La-doped $BaFe_2As_2$, indicating n-type carrier; while potassium doping leads to change of the sign in $R_H$ and TEP. It definitely indicates p-type carrier in superconducting $Ba_{1-x}K_xFe_2As_2$ with double FeAs layers, being in contrast to the case of $LnO_{1-x}F_xFeAs$ with single FeAs layer. A similar superconductivity is also observed in the sample with nominal composition $Ba_{1-x}K_xOFe_2As_2$.

Phase Diagram and Quantum Critical Point in Newly Discovered Superconductors: SmO_{1-x}F_xFeAs

The magnetic fluctuations associated with a quantum critical point (QCP) are widely believed to cause the non-Fermi liquid behaviors and unconventional superconductivities, for example, in heavy fermion systems and high temperature cuprate superconductors. Recently, superconductivity has been discovered in iron-based layered compound $LaO_{1-x}F_xFeAs$ with $T_c$=26 K\cite{yoichi}, and it competes with spin-density-wave (SDW) order\cite{dong}. Neutron diffraction shows a long-rang SDW-type antiferromagnetic (AF) order at $\sim 134$ K in LaOFeAs\cite{cruz,mcguire}. Therefore, a possible QCP and its role in this system are of great interests. Here we report the detailed phase diagram and anomalous transport properties of the new high-Tc superconductors $SmO_{1-x}F_xFeAs$ discovered by us\cite{chenxh}. It is found that superconductivity emerges at $x\sim$0.07, and optimal doping takes place in the $x\sim$0.20 sample with highest $T_c \sim $54 K. While $T_c$ increases monotonically with doping, the SDW order is rapidly suppressed, suggesting a QCP around $x \sim$0.14. As manifestations, a linear temperature dependence of the resistivity shows up at high temperatures in the $x<0.14$ regime, but at low temperatures just above $T_c$ in the $x>0.14$ regime; a drop in carrier density evidenced by a pronounced rise in Hall coefficient are observed, which mimic the high-$T_c$ cuprates. The simultaneous occurrence of order, carrier density change and criticality makes a compelling case for a quantum critical point in this system.

Superconductivity at 43 K in Samarium-arsenide Oxides $SmFeAsO_{1-x}F_x$

Since the discovery of high-transition temperature ($T_c$) superconductivity in layered copper oxides, extensive efforts have been devoted to explore the higher $T_c$ superconductivity. However, the $T_c$ higher than 40 K can be obtained only in the copper oxide superconductors so far. The highest reported value of $T_c$ for non-copper-oxide bulk superconductivity is 39 K in $MgB_2$.\cite{jun} The $T_c$ of about 40 K is close to or above the theoretical value predicted from BCS theory.\cite{mcmillan} Therefore, it is very significant to search for non-copper oxide superconductor with the transition temperature higher than 40 K to understand the mechanism of high-$T_c$ superconductivity. Here we report the discovery of bulk superconductivity in samarium-arsenide oxides $SmFeAsO_{1-x}F_x$ with ZrCuAiAs type structure. Resistivity and magnetization measurements show strong evidences for transition temperature as high as 43 K. $SmFeAsO_{1-x}F_x$ is the first non-copper oxide superconductor with $T_c$ higher than 40 K. The $T_c$ higher than 40 K may be a strong argument to consider $SmFeAsO_{1-x}F_x$ as an unconventional superconductor.

A Novel VLSI Technology to Manufacture High-Density Thermoelectric Cooling Devices

This paper describes a novel integrated circuit technology to manufacture high-density thermoelectric devices on a semiconductor wafer. With no moving parts, a thermoelectric cooler operates quietly, allows cooling below ambient temperature, and may be used for temperature control or heating if the direction of current flow is reversed. By using a monolithic process to increase the number of thermoelectric couples, the proposed solid-state cooling technology can be combined with traditional air cooling, liquid cooling, and phase-change cooling to yield greater heat flux and provide better cooling capability.

Transport properties and magnetic field induced localization in the misfit cobaltite [Bi$_2$Ba$_{1.3}$K$_{0.6}$Co$_{0.1}$]$^{RS}$[CoO$_2$]$_{1.97}$ single crystal

Resistivity under magnetic field, thermopower and Hall coefficient are systematically studied for [Bi$_2$Ba$_{1.3}$K$_{0.6}$Co$_{0.1}$]$^{RS}$[CoO$_2$]$_{1.97}$ single crystal. In-plane resistivity ($ρ_{ab}$(T)) shows metallic behavior down to 2 K with a $T^2$ dependence below 30 K; while out-of-plane resistivity ($ρ_{c}(T)$) shows metallic behavior at high temperature and a thermal activation semiconducting behavior below about 12 K. Striking feature is that magnetic field induces a ln(1/$T$) diverging behavior in both $ρ_{ab}$ and $ρ_{c}(T)$ at low temperature. The positive magnetoresistance (MR) could be well fitted by the formula based on multi-band electronic structure. The ln(1/$T$) diverging behavior in $ρ_{ab}$ and $ρ_{c}(T)$ could arise from the magnetic-field-induced 2D weak localization or spin density wave.

Intergrowth and thermoelectric properties in the Bi-Ca-Co-O system

Single crystals of the Bi-Ca-Co-O system have been grown using the flux method with cooling from 900$\celsius$ and 950$\celsius$, respectively. The single crystals are characterized by transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The misfit cobaltite [Ca$_2$Bi$_{1.4}$Co$_{0.6}$O$_4$]$^{RS}$[CoO$_2$]$_{1.69}$ single crystals with quadruple ($n$=4) rocksalt (RS) layer are achieved with cooling from 900$\celsius$. Such crystal exhibits room-temperature thermoelectric power (TEP) of 180$μ$V/K, much larger than that in Sr-based misfit cobaltites with quadruple RS layer. However, intergrowth of single crystals of quadruple ($n$=4) and triple ($n$=3) RS-type layer-based misfit cobaltites is observed with cooling from 950$\celsius$. Both of TEP and resistivity were obviously enhanced by the intergrowth compared to [Ca$_2$Bi$_{1.4}$Co$_{0.6}$O$_4$]$^{RS}$[CoO$_2$]$_{1.69}$ single crystal, while the power factor at room temperature remains unchanged.

Time-odd triaxial relativistic mean field approach for nuclear magnetic moments

The time-odd triaxial relativistic mean field approach is developed and applied to the investigation of the ground-state properties of light odd-mass nuclei near the double-closed shells. The nuclear magnetic moments including the isoscalar and isovector ones are calculated and good agreement with Schmidt values is obtained. Taking $^{17}$F as an example, the splitting of the single particle levels (around $~0.7$ MeV near the Fermi level), the nuclear current, the core polarizations, and the nuclear magnetic potential, i.e., the spatial part of the vector potential, due to the violation of the time reversal invariance are investigated in detail.

Ab initio study of single molecular transistor modulated by gate-bias

We use a self-consistent method to study the current of the single molecular transistor modulated by the transverse gate-bias in the level of the first-principles calculations. The numerical results show that both the polyacene-dithiol molecules and the fused-ring oligothiophene molecules are the potential high-frequency molecular transistor controlled by the transverse field. The long molecules of the polyacene-dithiol or the fused-ring thiophene are in favor of realizing the gate-bias controlled molecular transistor. The theoretical results suggest the related experiments.

Unusual Length Dependence of Conductance of Some Oligomers

Recent experiment found a quantum length dependence of oligothiophene molecule conductance at low bias [Xu et al., nano Lett. \textbf{5}, 1491 (2005)], the long molecule has large conductance. By means of a first-principles method we obtain both the quantum length dependence of conductance at low bias and the classical length dependence of conductance at high bias region for oligothiophene. In between there is an oscillated conductance behavior. The transport behaviors are determined by the distinct electronic structures of the molecular compounds. The various conductance length dependence may appear for the organic compounds. Our further investigation finds that the classical conductance length dependence in polyphenanthrene dithiolates and another unusual conductance length dependence in polyacene ditholates: the quantum length dependence of conductance is at the high bias and the classical length dependence of conductance is at the low bias.

Laboratory simulation of cometary x rays using a high-resolution microcalorimeter

X-ray emission following charge exchange has been studied on the University of California Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory electron beam ion traps EBIT-I and EBIT-II using a high-resolution microcalorimeter. The measured spectra include the K-shell emission from hydrogenlike and heliumlike C, N, O, and Ne needed for simulations of cometary x-ray emission. A comparison of the spectra produced in the interaction of O8+ with N2 and CH4 is presented that illustrates the dependence of the observed spectrum on the interaction gas.

Fabrication and superconductivity of NaxTaS2 crystals

In this paper we report the growth and superconductivity of $Na_xTaS_2$ crystals. The structural data deduced from X-ray diffraction pattern shows that the sample has the same structure as $2H-TaS_2$. A series of crystals with different superconducting transition temperatures ($T_c$) ranging from 2.5 K to 4.4 K were obtained. It is found that the $T_c$ rises with the increase of $Na$ content determined by Energy-Dispersive x-ray microanalysis(EDX) of Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) on these crystals. Compared with the resistivity curve of un-intercalated sample $2H-TaS_2$ ($T_c$ = 0.8 K, $T_{CDW} \approx$ 70 K), no signal of charge density wave (CDW) was observed in samples $Na_{0.1}TaS_2$ and $Na_{0.05}TaS_2$. However, in some samples with lower $T_c$, the CDW appears again at about 65 K. Comparison between the anisotropic resistivity indicates that the anisotropy becomes smaller in samples with more $Na$ intercalation (albeit a weak semiconducting behavior along c-axis) and thus higher $T_c$. It is thus concluded that there is a competition between the superconductivity and the CDW. With the increase of sodium content, the rise of $T_c$ in $Na_xTaS_2$ is caused mainly by the suppression to the CDW in $2H-TaS_2$, and the conventional rigid band model for layered dichalcogenide may be inadequate to explain the changes induced by the slight intercalation of sodium in $2H-TaS_2$.
