Competing chiral and multipolar electric phases in the extended Falicov-Kimball model

We study the effects of interband hybridization within the framework of an extended Falicov-Kimball model with itinerant $c$ and $f$ electrons. An explicit interband hybridization breaks the U(1) symmetry associated with the conservation of the difference between the total number of particles in each band. As a result, the degeneracy between multipolar electric and chiral orderings is lifted. We analyze the weak- and strong-coupling limits of the $c$-$f$ electron Coulomb interaction at zero temperature, and derive the corresponding mean-field quantum phase diagrams at half-filling for a model defined on a square lattice.

Interacting multi-component exciton gases in a potential trap: phase separation and Bose-Einstein condensation

The system under consideration is a multi-component gas of interacting para- and orthoexcitons confined in a three dimensional potential trap. We calculate the spatially resolved optical emission spectrum due to interband transitions involving weak direct and phonon mediated exciton-photon interactions. For each component, the occurrence of a Bose-Einstein condensate changes the spectrum in a characteristic way so that it directly reflects the constant chemical potential of the excitons and the renormalization of the quasiparticle excitation spectrum. Moreover, the interaction between the components leads, in dependence on temperature and particle number, to modifications of the spectra indicating phase separation of the subsystems. Typical examples of density profiles and luminescence spectra of ground-state para- and orthoexcitons in cuprous oxide are given.

Phonon-mediated sticking of electrons at dielectric surfaces

We study phonon-mediated temporary trapping of an electron in polarization-induced external surface states (image states) of a dielectric surface. Our approach is based on a quantum-kinetic equation for the occupancy of the image states. It allows us to distinguish between prompt and kinetic sticking. Because the depth of the image potential is much larger than the Debye energy multi-phonon processes are important. Taking two-phonon processes into account in cases where one-phonon processes yield a vanishing transition probability, as it is applicable, for instance, to graphite, we analyze the adsorption scenario as a function of potential depth and surface temperature and calculate prompt and kinetic sticking coefficients. We find rather small sticking coefficients, at most of the order of $10^{-3}$, and a significant suppression of the kinetic sticking coefficient due to a relaxation bottleneck inhibiting thermalization of the electron with the surface at short timescales.

Transport through a vibrating quantum dot: Polaronic effects

We present a Green's function based treatment of the effects of electron-phonon coupling on transport through a molecular quantum dot in the quantum limit. Thereby we combine an incomplete variational Lang-Firsov approach with a perturbative calculation of the electron-phonon self energy in the framework of generalised Matsubara Green functions and a Landauer-type transport description. Calculating the ground-state energy, the dot single-particle spectral function and the linear conductance at finite carrier density, we study the low-temperature transport properties of the vibrating quantum dot sandwiched between metallic leads in the whole electron-phonon coupling strength regime. We discuss corrections to the concept of an anti-adiabatic dot polaron and show how a deformable quantum dot can act as a molecular switch.

Charge-density-wave formation in a half-filled fermion-boson transport model: A projective renormalization approach

We study the metal-insulator transition in a very general two-channel transport model, where charge carriers are coupled to a correlated background medium. The fluctuations of the background were described as bosonic excitations, having the ability to relax. Employing an analytical projector-based renormalization technique, we calculate the ground-state and spectral properties of this fermion-boson model and corroborate recent numerical results, which indicate---in dependence on the `stiffness' of the background medium---a Luttinger-liquid to charge-density-wave transition for the one-dimensional half-filled band case. In particular, we determine the renormalized electron and boson dispersion relations and show that the quantum phase transition is not triggered by a softening of the boson modes. Thus the charge density wave is different in nature from an usual Peierls distorted state.

On the existence of the excitonic insulator phase in the extended Falicov-Kimball model: an SO(2)-invariant slave-boson approach

We re-examine the three-dimensional spinless Falicov-Kimball model with dispersive $f$ electrons at half-filling, addressing the dispute about the formation of an excitonic condensate, which is closely related to the problem of electronic ferroelectricity. To this end, we work out a slave-boson functional integral representation of the suchlike extended Falicov-Kimball model that preserves the $SO(2)\otimes U(1)^{\otimes 2}$ invariance of the action. We find a spontaneous pairing of $c$ electrons with $f$ holes, building an excitonic insulator state at low temperatures, also for the case of initially non-degenerate orbitals. This is in contrast to recent predictions of scalar slave-boson mean-field theory but corroborates previous Hartree-Fock and RPA results. Our more precise treatment of correlation effects, however, leads to a substantial reduction of the critical temperature. The different behavior of the partial densities of states in the weak and strong inter-orbital Coulomb interaction regimes supports a BCS-BEC transition scenario.

DMRG analysis of the SDW-CDW crossover region in the 1D half-filled Hubbard-Holstein model

In order to clarify the physics of the crossover from a spin-density-wave (SDW) Mott insulator to a charge-density-wave (CDW) Peierls insulator in one-dimensional (1D) systems, we investigate the Hubbard-Holstein Hamiltonian at half filling within a density matrix renormalisation group (DMRG) approach. Determining the spin and charge correlation exponents, the momentum distribution function, and various excitation gaps, we confirm that an intervening metallic phase expands the SDW-CDW transition in the weak-coupling regime.

Phonon-mediated desorption of image-bound electrons from dielectric surfaces

A complete kinetic modeling of an ionized gas in contact with a surface requires the knowledge of the electron desorption time and the electron sticking coefficient. We calculate the desorption time for phonon-mediated desorption of an image-bound electron, as it occurs, for instance, on dielectric surfaces where desorption channels involving internal electronic degrees of freedom are closed. Because of the large depth of the polarization-induced surface potential with respect to the Debye energy multi-phonon processes are important. To obtain the desorption time, we use a quantum-kinetic rate equation for the occupancies of the bound surface states, taking two-phonon processes into account in cases where one-phonon processes yield a vanishing transition probability, as it is sufficient, for instance, for graphite. Besides producing an estimate for the desorption time of an electron image-bound to a graphite surface, we investigate the desorption scenario and show that desorption via cascades over bound states dominates unless direct one-phonon transitions from the lowest bound state to the continuum are possible.

One-Dimensional Quantum Transport Affected by a Background Medium: Fluctuations versus Correlations

We analyze the spectral properties of a very general two-channel fermion-boson transport model in the insulating and metallic regimes, and the signatures of the metal-insulator quantum phase transition in between. To this end we determine the single particle spectral function related to angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, the momentum distribution function, the Drude weight and the optical response by means of a dynamical (pseudo-site) density-matrix renormalization group technique for the one-dimensional half-filled band case. We show how the interplay of correlations and fluctuations in the background medium controls the charge dynamics of the system, which is a fundamental problem in a great variety of advanced materials.

Luttinger parameters and momentum distribution function for the half-filled spinless fermion Holstein model: A DMRG approach

We reexamine the nature of the metallic phase of the one-dimensional half-filled Holstein model of spinless fermions. To this end we determine the Tomonaga-Luttinger-liquid correlation parameter $K_ρ$ by large-scale density-matrix renormalisation-group (DMRG) calculations, exploiting (i) the leading-order scaling relations between the ground-state energy and the single-particle excitation gap and (ii) the static charge structure factor in the long-wavelength limit. While both approaches give almost identical results for intermediate-to-large phonon frequencies, we find contrasting behaviour in the adiabatic regime: (i) $K_ρ>1$ (attractive) versus (ii) $K_ρ<1$ (repulsive). The latter result for the correlation exponent is corroborated by data obtained for the momentum distribution function $n(k)$, which puts the existence of an attractive metallic state in the spinless fermion Holstein model into question. We conclude that the scaling relation must be modified in the presence of electron-phonon interactions with noticeable retardation.

Comparative study of semiclassical approaches to quantum dynamics

Quantum states can be described equivalently by density matrices, Wigner functions or quantum tomograms. We analyze the accuracy and performance of three related semiclassical approaches to quantum dynamics, in particular with respect to their numerical implementation. As test cases, we consider the time evolution of Gaussian wave packets in different one-dimensional geometries, whereby tunneling, resonance and anharmonicity effects are taken into account. The results and methods are benchmarked against an exact quantum mechanical treatment of the system, which is based on a highly efficient Chebyshev expansion technique of the time evolution operator.

Non-equilibrium current and electron pumping in nanostructures

We discuss a numerical method to study electron transport in mesoscopic devices out of equilibrium. The method is based on the solution of operator equations of motion, using efficient Chebyshev time propagation techniques. Its peculiar feature is the propagation of operators backwards in time. In this way the resource consumption scales linearly with the number of states used to represent the system. This allows us to calculate the current for non-interacting electrons in large one-, two- and three-dimensional lead-device configurations with time-dependent voltages or potentials. We discuss the technical aspects of the method and present results for an electron pump device and a disordered system, where we find transient behaviour that exists for a very long time and may be accessible to experiments.

Physisorption kinetics of electrons at plasma boundaries

Plasma-boundaries floating in an ionized gas are usually negatively charged. They accumulate electrons more efficiently than ions which leads to the formation of a quasi-stationary electron film at the boundaries. We propose, in a colloquial manner, a physisorption-inspired quantum-kinetic description of the build-up of surface charges at inert plasma boundaries and calculate the electron sticking coefficient and the electron desorption time, which play an important role in determining the quasi-stationary surface charge, and about which little is empirically and theoretically known, from a microscopic model for the electron-wall interaction. In an exploratory calculation we specifically consider a metallic boundary. But thereby we identify quite generally what we believe are the key issues of the electronic microphysics at inert plasma boundaries in the hope to inspire other groups to join us on our journey.

Towards a microscopic theory of particle charging

We recently questioned the treatment of a dust particle as a perfect absorber for electrons and ions and proposed a surface model for the charge of a dust particle in a quiescent plasma which combines the microscopic physics at the grain boundary (sticking into and desorption from external surface states) with the macrophysics of the discharge (plasma collection fluxes). Within this model the charge and partial screening of the particle can be calculated without relying on the condition that the total electron collection flux balances on the grain surface the total ion collection flux. Grain charges obtained from our approach compared favorably with experimental data. The purpose of this paper is to describe our model in more detail, in particular, the hypotheses on which it is built, contrast it with the standard charging models based on flux balancing on the grain surface, and to analyze additional experimental data.

Sparse polynomial space approach to dissipative quantum systems: Application to the sub-ohmic spin-boson model

We propose a general numerical approach to open quantum systems with a coupling to bath degrees of freedom. The technique combines the methodology of polynomial expansions of spectral functions with the sparse grid concept from interpolation theory. Thereby we construct a Hilbert space of moderate dimension to represent the bath degrees of freedom, which allows us to perform highly accurate and efficient calculations of static, spectral and dynamic quantities using standard exact diagonalization algorithms. The strength of the approach is demonstrated for the phase transition, critical behaviour, and dissipative spin dynamics in the spin boson model

Quantum phase transition in a 1D transport model with boson affected hopping: Luttinger liquid versus charge-density-wave behavior

We solve a very general two-channel fermion-boson model describing charge transport within some background medium by means of a refined pseudo-site density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) technique. Performing a careful finite-size scaling analysis, we determine the ground-state phase diagram and convincingly prove that the model exhibits a metal-insulator quantum phase transition for the half-filled band case. In order to characterize the metallic and insulating regimes we calculate besides the local particle densities and fermion-boson correlation functions, the kinetic energy, the charge structure factor, the Luttinger liquid charge exponent and the single-particle excitation gap for a one-dimensional infinite system.

Metallicity in the half-filled Holstein-Hubbard model

We re-examine the Peierls insulator to Mott insulator transition scenario in the one-dimensional Holstein-Hubbard model where, at half-filling, electron-phonon and electron-electron interactions compete for establishing charge- and spin-density-wave states, respectively. By means of large-scale density-matrix renormalization group calculations we determine the spin, single-particle and two-particle excitation gaps and prove--in the course of a careful finite-size scaling analysis--recent claims for an intervening metallic phase in the weak-coupling regime. We show that for large phonon frequencies the metallic region is even more extended than previously expected, and subdivided into ordinary Luttinger liquid and bipolaronic liquid phases.
