Particles as probes for complex plasmas in front of biased surfaces

An interesting aspect in the research of complex (dusty) plasmas is the experimental study of the interaction of micro-particles with the surrounding plasma for diagnostic purposes. Local electric fields can be determined from the behaviour of particles in the plasma, e.g. particles may serve as electrostatic probes. Since in many cases of applications in plasma technology it is of great interest to describe the electric field conditions in front of floating or biased surfaces, the confinement and behaviour of test particles is studied in front of floating walls inserted into a plasma as well as in front of additionally biased surfaces. For the latter case, the behaviour of particles in front of an adaptive electrode, which allows for an efficient confinement and manipulation of the grains, has been experimentally studied in dependence on the discharge parameters and on different bias conditions of the electrode. The effect of the partially biased surface (dc, rf) on the charged micro-particles has been investigated by particle falling experiments. In addition to the experiments we also investigate the particle behaviour numerically by molecular dynamics, in combination with a fluid and particle-in-cell description of the plasma.

Structures of quantum 2D electron-hole plasmas

We investigate structures of 2D quantum electron-hole (e-h) plasmas by the direct path integral Monte Carlo method (PIMC) in a wide range of temperature, density and hole-to-electron mass ratio. Our simulation includes a region of appearance and decay of the bound states (excitons and biexcitons), the Mott transition from the neutral e-h plasma to metallic-like clusters, formation from clusters the hexatic-like liquid and formation of the crystal-like lattice.

Elementary processes in gas discharges

This chapter presents, from a quantum-mechanical point of view, a tutorial discussion of elementary collision processes in the bulk of a gas discharge. Instead of merely listing kitchen-made cross section formulae and unrelated cross section data, emphasis has been given on an unified description of elementary processes based on general principles of quantum-mechanical multi-channel scattering theory. By necessity, the presentation is rather dense. Technical details left out, as well as cross section data, can be found, respectively, in the quoted original papers and the review articles, monographs, and web-sites mentioned in the introductory remarks to this chapter.

Bound state formation and nature of the excitonic insulator phase in the extended Falicov-Kimball model

Motivated by the possibility of pressure-induced exciton condensation in intermediate-valence Tm[Se,Te] compounds we study the Falicov-Kimball model extended by a finite f-hole valence bandwidth. Calculating the Frenkel-type exciton propagator we obtain excitonic bound states above a characteristic value of the local interband Coulomb attraction. Depending on the system parameters coherence between c- and f-states may be established at low temperatures, leading to an excitonic insulator phase. We find strong evidence that the excitonic insulator typifies either a BCS condensate of electron-hole pairs (weak-coupling regime) or a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of preformed excitons (strong-coupling regime), which points towards a BCS-BEC transition scenario as Coulomb correlations increase.

Correlation-induced metal insulator transition in a two-channel fermion-boson model

We investigate charge transport within some background medium by means of an effective lattice model with a novel form of fermion-boson coupling. The bosons describe fluctuations of a correlated background. By analyzing groundstate and spectral properties of this transport model, we show how a metal-insulator quantum phase transition can occur for the half-filled band case. We discuss the evolution of a mass-asymmetric band structure in the insulating phase and establish connections to the Mott and Peierls transition scenarios.

Functionalizing graphene by embedded boron clusters

We present a model system that might serve as a blueprint for the controlled layout of graphene based nanodevices. The systems consists of chains of B7 clusters implanted in a graphene matrix, where the boron clusters are not directly connected. We show that the graphene matrix easily accepts these alternating boron chains, and that the implanted boron components may dramatically modify the electronic properties of graphene based nanomaterials. This suggests a functionalization of graphene nanomaterials, where the semiconducting properties might be supplemented by parts of the graphene matrix itself, but the basic wiring will be provided by alternating chains of implanted boron clusters that connect these areas.

Localization-delocalization transition of a polaron near an impurity

We solve the problem of polaron localization on an attractive impurity by means of direct-space Diagrammatic Monte Carlo implemented for the system in the thermodynamic limit. In particular we determine the ground state phase diagram in dependence on the electron-phonon coupling and impurity potential strength for the whole phonon frequency range. Including the quantum phonon dynamics we find and characterize a new phase which is missing in the zero phonon-frequency limit (adiabatic approximation), where self-trapped polarons are not localized at shallow impurities. We predict and show that in the vicinity of the localization transition a region with a mixture of weak- and strong-coupling spectral response is realized.

Surface states and the charge of a dust particle in a plasma

We investigate electron and ion surface states of a negatively charged dust particle in a gas discharge and identify the charge of the particle with the electron surface density bound in the polarization-induced short-range part of the particle potential. On that scale, ions do not affect the charge. They are trapped in the shallow states of the Coulomb tail of the potential and act only as screening charges. Using orbital-motion limited electron charging fluxes and the particle temperature as an adjustable parameter, we obtain excellent agreement with experimental data.

Localized polarons and doorway vibrons in finite quantum structures

We consider transport through finite quantum systems such as quantum barriers, wells, dots or junctions, coupled to local vibrational modes in the quantal regime. As a generic model we study the Holstein-Hubbard Hamiltonian with site-dependent potentials and interactions. Depending on the barrier height to electron-phonon coupling strength ratio and the phonon frequency we find distinct opposed behaviors: Vibration-mediated tunneling or intrinsic localization of (bi)polarons. These regimes are strongly manifested in the density correlations, mobility, and optical response calculated by exact numerical techniques.

Classical and quantum Coulomb crystals

Strong correlation effects in classical and quantum plasmas are discussed. In particular, Coulomb (Wigner) crystallization phenomena are reviewed focusing on one-component non-neutral plasmas in traps and on macroscopic two-component neutral plasmas. The conditions for crystal formation in terms of critical values of the coupling parameters and the distance fluctuations and the phase diagram of Coulomb crystals are discussed.

Numerical solution of the Holstein polaron problem

We performed an extensive numerical analysis of the Holstein model. Combining variational Lanczos diagonalisation, density matrix renormalisation group, kernel polynomial expansion, and cluster perturbation theory techniques we solved for properties of the Holstein polaron and bipolaron problems. Numerical solution of the Holstein model means that we determined the ground-state and low-lying excited states with arbitrary precision in the thermodynamic limit for any dimension. Moreover, we calculated the spectral properties (e.g. photoemission and phonon spectra), optical response and thermal transport, as well as the dynamics of polaron formation. Our approach takes into account the full quantum dynamics of the electrons and phonons and yields unbiased results for all electron-phonon interaction strengths and phonon frequencies, but is of particular value in the intermediate-coupling regime, where perturbation theories and other analytical techniques fail.

Radio-frequency discharges in Oxygen. Part 1: Modeling

In this series of three papers we present results from a combined experimental and theoretical effort to quantitatively describe capacitively coupled radio-frequency discharges in oxygen. The particle-in-cell Monte-Carlo model on which the theoretical description is based will be described in the present paper. It treats space charge fields and transport processes on an equal footing with the most important plasma-chemical reactions. For given external voltage and pressure, the model determines the electric potential within the discharge and the distribution functions for electrons, negatively charged atomic oxygen, and positively charged molecular oxygen. Previously used scattering and reaction cross section data are critically assessed and in some cases modified. To validate our model, we compare the densities in the bulk of the discharge with experimental data and find good agreement, indicating that essential aspects of an oxygen discharge are captured.

Correlation effects in partially ionized mass asymmetric electron-hole plasmas

The effects of strong Coulomb correlations in dense three-dimensional electron-hole plasmas are studied by means of unbiased direct path integral Monte Carlo simulations. The formation and dissociation of bound states, such as excitons and bi-excitons is analyzed and the density-temperature region of their appearance is identified. At high density, the Mott transition to the fully ionized metallic state (electron-hole liquid) is detected. Particular attention is paid to the influence of the hole to electron mass ratio $M$ on the properties of the plasma. Above a critical value of about M=80 formation of a hole Coulomb crystal was recently verified [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 95}, 235006 (2005)] which is supported by additional results. Results are related to the excitonic phase diagram of intermediate valent Tm[Se,Te], where large values of $M$ have been observed experimentally.

Boson-controlled quantum transport

We study the interplay of collective dynamics and damping in the presence of correlations and bosonic fluctuations within the framework of a newly proposed model, which captures the principal transport mechanisms that apply to a variety of physical systems. We establish close connections to the transport of lattice and spin polarons, or the dynamics of a particle coupled to a bath. We analyse the model by exactly calculating the optical conductivity, Drude weight, spectral functions, groundstate dispersion and particle-boson correlation functions for a 1D infinite system.

Stochastic Green's function approach to disordered systems

Based on distributions of local Green's functions we present a stochastic approach to disordered systems. Specifically we address Anderson localisation and cluster effects in binary alloys. Taking Anderson localisation of Holstein polarons as an example we discuss how this stochastic approach can be used for the investigation of interacting disordered systems.

Spectral signatures of the Luttinger liquid to charge-density-wave transition

Electron- and phonon spectral functions of the one-dimensional, spinless-fermion Holstein model at half filling are calculated in the four distinct regimes of the phase diagram, corresponding to an attractive or repulsive Luttinger liquid at weak electron-phonon coupling, and a band- or polaronic insulator at strong coupling. The results obtained by means of kernel polynomial and systematic cluster approaches reveal substantially different physics in these regimes and further indicate that the size of the phonon frequency significantly affects the nature of the quantum Peierls phase transition.

Spectral functions of the spinless Holstein model

An analytical approach to the one-dimensional spinless Holstein model is proposed, which is valid at finite charge-carrier concentrations. Spectral functions of charge carriers are computed on the basis of self-energy calculations. A generalization of the Lang-Firsov canonical transformation method is shown to provide an interpolation scheme between the extreme weak- and strong-coupling cases. The transformation depends on a variationally determined parameterthat characterizes the charge distribution across the polaron volume. The relation between the spectral functions of polarons and electrons, the latter corresponding to the photoemission spectrum, is derived. Particular attention is paid to the distinction between the coherent and incoherent parts of the spectra, and their evolution as a function of band filling and model parameters. Results are discussed and compared with recent numerical calculations for the many-polaron problem.

Hole crystallization in semiconductors

When electrons in a solid are excited to a higher energy band they leave behind a vacancy (hole) in the original band which behaves like a positively charged particle. Here we predict that holes can spontaneously order into a regular lattice in semiconductors with sufficiently flat valence bands. The critical hole to electron effective mass ratio required for this phase transition is found to be of the order of 80.
