Excitation Spectra of the ${}^{12}{\rm C}(p,d)$ Reaction near the $\eta'$-Meson Emission Threshold Measured in Coincidence with High-Momentum Protons

The missing mass of the ${}^{12}{\rm C}(p,d)$ reaction has been measured near the $\eta'$-meson emission threshold in coincidence with a high-momentum proton to selectively collect $\eta'$-${}^{11}{\rm C}$ mesic nucleus formation events at GSI, Germany. A 2.5 GeV proton excites a carbon nucleus to form an $\eta'$-mesic nucleus emitting a deuteron forward with an energy of $\sim 1.6$ GeV. The deuteron is momentum-analyzed by the Fragment Separator used as a high-resolution spectrometer to deduce the excitation energy of the residual system. The large-acceptance detector WASA surrounding the target identifies high-momentum protons emitted in the decay of the $\eta'$-mesic nucleus. The measured semi-exclusive spectrum exhibits structures below the threshold though the statistical significance is limited. The spectrum is fitted by theoretically calculated spectra varying optical-potential parameters of the $\eta'$-nucleus interaction. The analysis results indicate $\eta'$-mesic nuclei formation for the real potential depth of $\sim -61$ MeV with a local statistical significance of $3.5 \sigma$ and, taking into account the look-elsewhere effect, a global significance of $2.1 \sigma$.

Observation of Tensor-Driven High-Momentum Neutrons in ${}^{16}$O via ($p,d$) Reactions and Zero-Degree Deuteron Momentum Spectroscopy

The $^{16}\mathrm{O}(p,d)^{15}\mathrm{O}$ reaction has been studied at $0^{\circ}$ using 403-, 604-, 907- and 1209-MeV protons, comparing cross sections populating positive- and negative-parity states in $^{15}\mathrm{O}$. Transitions to positive-parity states exhibit strong sensitivity to high-momentum neutrons, while negative-parity transitions show much smaller effects. The cross-section ratio between positive- and negative-parity states rises sharply with momentum transfer, matching theoretical predictions that include tensor interactions, particularly the peak near $2~\mathrm{fm}^{-1}$ for the $5/2^{+}$ to ground-state ratio. These results highlight $0^{\circ}$ neutron-pickup reactions as a sensitive probe for tensor-driven high-momentum components, paving the way for studies in exotic nuclei via radioactive beams.

Performance of newly constructed plastic scintillator barrel in the WASA-FRS experiments and evaluation of radiation damage effects on multi-pixel photon counter

A barrel-shaped plastic scintillation counter with Multi-Pixel Photon Counter (MPPC) readout has been developed and operated in the first WASA-FRS experimental campaign at GSI. The detector was used to measure charged particles emitted from reactions induced by a 2.5 GeV proton beam incident on a carbon target, providing particle identification in combination with momentum reconstruction in a 1 T magnetic field. The performance of this detector, particularly its response to energy deposition and time resolution, was systematically investigated as a function of count rate and total number of irradiating protons. A time resolution of 45-75 ps ($\sigma$), depending on the energy deposition, was achieved. Stable performance was maintained under high-rate conditions up to 1.35 MHz per single counter, with no significant degradation in either signal amplitude or timing response. Radiation-induced damage to the MPPCs was observed primarily as a reduction in signal amplitude, with approximately $35\%$ decrease at an estimated 1 MeV neutron-equivalent fluence of $2.4 \times 10^{10}$ cm$^{-2}$.

Measurement of the mesonic decay branch of the $\bar{K}\!N\!N$ quasi-bound state

We conducted measurements of $K^- + {^3{\rm He}} \to π\!Y \!N + N'$ reactions using a $1~{\rm GeV}/c$ $K^-$-beam, with the objective of understanding the broad decay width of $\bar{K} \!N \!N$ (approximately twice as broad as that of $Λ(1405)$ considered to be the $\bar{K} \!N$ quasi-bound state). We successfully reproduced distributions of the $π\! Y \! N$ invariant mass and momentum transfer for $π\! Y \! N$ using model fitting functions for $\bar{K} \!N \!N$ formation and quasi-free $\bar{K}$ absorption (${\rm QF}_{\bar{K}-{\rm abs}}$) processes. The model can describe the experimental data quite well, and four $\bar{K} \! N \! N \to π\! Y \! N $ cross-sections were obtained. The results indicate that mesonic decay is the dominant decay branch of $\bar{K} \! N \! N$. The results also suggest that $Γ_{πΛN} \sim Γ_{πΣN}$, which indicates that the $I_{\bar{K} \! N}=1$ absorption channel, in addition to the $I_{\bar{K} \! N}=0$ absorption channel, substantially contribute to the $\bar{K} \! N \! N$ decay, making the $\bar{K} \! N \! N$ state approximately twice as unstable as $Λ$(1405).

Circular polarization measurement for individual gamma rays in capture reactions with intense pulsed neutrons

Measurements of circular polarization of $\gamma$-ray emitted from neutron capture reactions provide valuable information for nuclear physics studies. The spin and parity of excited states can be determined by measuring the circular polarization from polarized neutron capture reactions. Furthermore, the $\gamma$-ray circular polarization in a neutron capture resonance is crucial for studying the enhancement effect of parity nonconservation in compound nuclei. The $\gamma$-ray circular polarization can be measured using a polarimeter based on magnetic Compton scattering. A polarimeter was constructed, and its performance indicators were evaluated using a circularly polarized $\gamma$-ray beam. Furthermore, as a demonstration, the $\gamma$-ray circular polarization was measured in $^{32}$S($\vec{\textrm{n}}$,$\gamma$)$^{33}$S reactions with polarized neutrons.

Transverse asymmetry of individual $γ$-rays in the $^{139}$La($\vec{n}$, $γ$)$^{140}$La reaction

The enhancement of the parity-violating asymmetry in the vicinity of $p$-wave compound nuclear resonances was observed for a variety of medium-heavy nuclei. The enhanced parity-violating asymmetry can be understood using the $s$-$p$ mixing model. The $s$-$p$ mixing model predicts several neutron energy-dependent angular correlations between the neutron momentum $\vec k_n$, neutron spin $\vecσ_n$, $γ$-ray momentum $\vec k_γ$, and $γ$-ray polarization $\vecσ_γ$ in the $(n,γ)$ reaction. In this paper, the improved value of the transverse asymmetry of $γ$-ray emissions, corresponding to a correlation term $\vecσ_n\cdot(\vec k_n\times\vec k_γ)$ in the $^{139}\mathrm{La}(\vec n,γ)^{140}\mathrm{La}$ reaction, and the transverse asymmetries in the transitions to several low excited states of $^{140}\mathrm{La}$ are reported.

High sensitivity of a future search for P-odd/T-odd interactions on the 0.75 eV $p$-wave resonance in $\vec{n}+^{139}\vec{\rm La}$ forward transmission determined using pulsed neutron beam

Neutron transmission experiments can offer a new type of highly sensitive search for time-reversal invariance violating (TRIV) effects in nucleon-nucleon interactions via the same enhancement mechanism observed for large parity violating (PV) effects in neutron-induced compound nuclear processes. In these compound processes, the TRIV cross-section is given as the product of the PV cross-section, a spin-factor $\kappa$, and a ratio of TRIV and PV matrix elements. We determined $\kappa$ to be $0.59\pm0.05$ for $^{139}$La+$n$ using both $(n, \gamma)$ spectroscopy and ($\vec{n}+^{139}\vec{\rm La}$) transmission. This result quantifies for the first time the high sensitivity of the $^{139}$La 0.75~eV $p$-wave resonance in a future search for P-odd/T-odd interactions in ($\vec{n}+^{139}\vec{\rm La}$) forward transmission.

Spin dependence in the $p$-wave resonance of ${^{139}\vec{\rm{La}}+\vec{n}}$

We measured the spin dependence in a neutron-induced $p$-wave resonance by using a polarized epithermal neutron beam and a polarized nuclear target. Our study focuses on the 0.75~eV $p$-wave resonance state of $^{139}$La+$n$, where largely enhanced parity violation has been observed. We determined the partial neutron width of the $p$-wave resonance by measuring the spin dependence of the neutron absorption cross section between polarized $^{139}\rm{La}$ and polarized neutrons. Our findings serve as a foundation for the quantitative study of the enhancement effect of the discrete symmetry violations caused by mixing between partial amplitudes in the compound nuclei.

Angular distribution of $γ$-rays from a neutron-induced $p$-wave resonance of $^{132}$Xe

A neutron-energy dependent angular distribution was measured for individual $γ$-rays from the 3.2 eV $p$-wave resonance of $^{131}$Xe+$n$, that shows enhanced parity violation owing to a mixing between $s$- and $p$-wave amplitudes. The $γ$-ray transitions from the $p$-wave resonance were identified, and the angular distribution with respect to the neutron momentum was evaluated as a function of the neutron energy for 7132 keV $γ$-rays, which correspond to a transition to the 1807 keV excited state of $^{132}$Xe. The angular distribution is considered to originate from the interference between $s$- and $p$-wave amplitudes, and will provide a basis for a quantitative understanding of the enhancement mechanism of the fundamental parity violation in compound nuclei.

Measurement of the transverse asymmetry of $γ$-rays in the $^{117}$Sn(n,$γ$)$^{118}$Sn reaction

Largely enhanced parity-violating effects observed in compound resonances induced by epithermal neutrons are currently attributed to the mixing of parity-unfavored partial amplitudes in the entrance channel of the compound states. Furthermore, it is proposed that the same mechanism that enhances the parity-violation also enhances the breaking of time-reversal-invariance in the compound nucleus. The entrance-channel mixing induces energy-dependent spin-angular correlations of individual $γ$-rays emitted from the compound nuclear state. For a detailed study of the mixing model, a $γ$-ray yield in the reaction of $^{117}$Sn(n,$γ$)$^{118}$Sn was measured using the pulsed beam of polarized epithermal neutrons and Ge detectors. An angular dependence of asymmetric $γ$-ray yields for the orientation of the neutron polarization was observed.

Pole position of $Λ(1405)$ measured in $d(K^-,n)πΣ$ reactions

We measured a set of $π^\pmΣ^\mp$, $π^0Σ^0$, and $π^-Σ^0$ invariant mass spectra below and above the $\bar{K}N$ mass threshold in $K^-$-induced reactions on deuteron. We deduced the $S$-wave $\bar{K}N\rightarrowπΣ$ and $\bar{K}N\rightarrow\bar{K}N$ scattering amplitudes in the isospin 0 channel in the framework of a $\bar{K}N$ and $πΣ$ coupled channel. We find that a resonance pole corresponding to $Λ(1405)$ is located at 1417.7$^{+6.0}_{-7.4}$(fitting errors)$^{+1.1}_{-1.0}$(systematic errors) + $[-26.1^{+6.0}_{-7.9}$(fitting errors)$^{+1.7}_{-2.0}$(systematic errors)]$i$ MeV/$c^2$, closer to the $\bar{K}N$ mass threshold than the value determined by the Particle Data Group.

Angular distribution of $γ$ rays from the p-wave resonance of $^{118}$Sn

The neutron energy-dependent angular distribution of $γ$ rays from $^{117}{\rm Sn}(n,γ)$ reaction was measured with germanium detectors and a pulsed neutron beam. The angular distribution was clearly observed in $γ$-ray emissions with an energy of 9327 keV which corresponds to the transition from a neutron resonance of $^{117}{\rm Sn}+n$ to the ground state of $^{118}{\rm Sn}$. The angular distribution causes an angular-dependent asymmetric resonance shape. An asymmetry $A_{\rm LH}$ was defined as $(N_{\rm L}-N_{\rm H})/(N_{\rm L}+N_{\rm H})$, where $N_{\rm L}$ and $N_{\rm H}$ are integrated values for lower- and higher-energy regions of a neutron resonance, respectively. We found that the $A_{\rm LH}$ has the angular dependence of $(A \cos θ_γ+B)$, where $θ_γ$ is the $γ$-ray emission angle with respect to the incident neutron momentum, with $A=0.394 \pm 0.073$ and $B = 0.118 \pm 0.029$ in the 1.33 eV p-wave resonance.

Recent results and future prospects of kaonic nuclei at J-PARC

$\bar K$-nuclear bound systems, kaonic nuclei, have been widely discussed as products of the strongly attractive $\bar K N$ interaction in $I = 0$ channels. Recently, we demonstrated that kaonic nuclei can be produced via in-flight $(K^-,N)$ reactions using the low-momentum DC kaon beam at the J-PARC E15 experiment. We observed the simplest kaonic nuclei, $K^-pp$, having a much deeper binding energy than normal nuclei. For further studies, we have proposed a series of experimental programs for the systematic investigation of light kaonic nuclei, from $\bar K N$ ($Λ(1405)$) to $\bar K NNNN$. In the new experiment approved as J-PARC E80, we will measure the $\bar K NNN$ ($A=3$) system as a first step toward a comprehensive study.

Energy dependent angular distribution of individual $γ$-rays in the $^{139}$La($n$, $γ$)$^{140}$La* reaction

Neutron energy-dependent angular distributions were observed for individual $γ$-rays from the 0.74 eV p-wave resonance of $^{139}$La+$n$ to several lower excited states of $^{140}$La. The $γ$-ray signals were analyzed in a two dimensional histogram of the $γ$-ray energy, measured with distributed germanium detectors, and neutron energy, determined with the time-of-flight of pulsed neutrons, to identify the neutron energy dependence of the angular distribution for each individual $γ$-rays. The angular distribution was also found for a photopeak accompanied with a faint p-wave resonance component in the neutron energy spectrum. Our results can be interpreted as interference between s- and p-wave amplitudes which may be used to study discrete symmetries of fundamental interactions.

Evolution of the dipole polarizability in the stable tin isotope chain

The dipole polarizability of stable even-mass tin isotopes 112,114,116,118,120,124 was extracted from inelastic proton scattering experiments at 295 MeV under very forward angles performed at RCNP. Predictions from energy density functionals cannot account for the present data and the polarizability of 208Pb simultaneously. The evolution of the polarizabilities in neighboring isotopes indicates a kink at 120Sn while all model results show a nearly linear increase with mass number after inclusion of pairing corrections.

Electric and magnetic dipole strength in 112,114,116,118,120,124Sn

Inelastic proton scattering experiments were performed at the Research Center for Nuclear Physics, Osaka, with a 295 MeV beam covering laboratory angles 0°-6° and excitation energies 6-22 MeV. Cross sections due to E1 and M1 excitations were extracted with a multipole decomposition analysis and then converted to reduced transition probabilities with the "virtual photon method" for E1 and the "unit cross section method" for M1 excitations, respectively. Including a theory-aided correction for the high excitation energy region not covered experimentally, the electric dipole polarizability was determined from the E1 strength distributions. Total photoabsorption cross sections derived from the E1 and M1 strength distributions show significant differences compared to those from previous ($γ$,xn) experiments in the energy region of the isocvector giant dipole resonance (IVGDR). The widths of the IVGDR deduced from the present data with a Lorentz parameterization show an approximately constant value of about 4.5 MeV in contrast to the large variations between isotopes observed in previous work. The IVGDR centroid energies are in good correspondence to expectations from systematics of their mass dependence. Furthermore, a study of the dependence of the IVGDR energies on bulk matter properties is presented. The E1 strengths below neutron threshold show fair agreement with results from ($γ$,$γ$') experiments on 112,116,120,124Sn in the energy region between 6 and 7 MeV. At higher excitation energies large differences are observed pointing to a different nature of the excited states with small ground state branching ratios. The isovector spin-M1 strengths exhibit a broad distribution between 6 and 12 MeV in all studied nuclei.

Observation of a $\bar{K}NN$ bound state in the $^3{\rm He} (K^-, Λp)n$ reaction

We have performed an exclusive measurement of the $K^{-}+\! ~^{3}{\rm He} \to Λpn$ reaction at an incident kaon momentum of $1\ {\rm GeV}/c$.In the $Λp$ invariant mass spectrum, a clear peak was observed below the mass threshold of $\bar{K}\!+\!N\!+\!N$, as a signal of the kaonic nuclear bound state, $\bar{K}NN$.The binding energy, decay width, and $S$-wave Gaussian reaction form-factor of this state were observed to be $B_{K} = 42\pm3({\rm stat.})^{+3}_{-4}({\rm syst.})\ {\rm MeV}$, $Γ_{K} = 100\pm7({\rm stat.})^{+19}_{-9}({\rm syst.})\ {\rm MeV}$, and $Q_{K} = 383\pm11({\rm stat.})^{+4}_{-1}({\rm syst.})\ {\rm MeV}/c$, respectively. The total production cross-section of $\bar{K}NN$, determined by its $Λp$ decay mode, was $σ^{tot}_{K} \cdot BR_{Λp} = 9.3\pm0.8({\rm stat.})^{+1.4}_{-1.0}({\rm syst.})\ μ{\rm b}$.We estimated the branching ratio of the $\bar{K}NN$ state to the $Λp$ and $Σ^{0}p$ decay modes as $BR_{Λp}/BR_{Σ^{0}p} \sim 1.7$, by assuming that the physical processes leading to the $ΣN\!N$ final states are analogous to those of $Λpn$.
