Single crystal growth and physical properties of 50% electron doped rhodate Sr$_{1.5}$La$_{0.5}$RhO$_{4}$

Centimeter-sized single crystals of Sr$_{1.5}$La$_{0.5}$RhO$_{4}$ were grown by the floating zone method at oxygen pressures of 20~bar. The quality of our single crystals was confirmed by X-ray Laue, powder and single crystal X-ray diffraction, neutron and X-ray absorbtion spectroscopy measurements. At $\sim$50% electron doping we observe RhO$_3$ octahedral rotations of $\sim$8.2$^{\circ}$ within the octahedral basal plane which are incompatible with space group I4/mmm. Our single crystal was further characterized by susceptibility, electrical transport and, finally, specific heat measurements showing a temperature dependent Debye temperature.

Superballistic flow of viscous electron fluid through graphene constrictions

Electron-electron (e-e) collisions can impact transport in a variety of surprising and sometimes counterintuitive ways. Despite strong interest, experiments on the subject proved challenging because of the simultaneous presence of different scattering mechanisms that suppress or obscure consequences of e-e scattering. Only recently, sufficiently clean electron systems with transport dominated by e-e collisions have become available, showing behavior characteristic of highly viscous fluids. Here we study electron transport through graphene constrictions and show that their conductance below 150 K increases with increasing temperature, in stark contrast to the metallic character of doped graphene. Notably, the measured conductance exceeds the maximum conductance possible for free electrons. This anomalous behavior is attributed to collective movement of interacting electrons, which 'shields' individual carriers from momentum loss at sample boundaries. The measurements allow us to identify the conductance contribution arising due to electron viscosity and determine its temperature dependence. Besides fundamental interest, our work shows that viscous effects can facilitate high-mobility transport at elevated temperatures, a potentially useful behavior for designing graphene-based devices.

Intricacies of the Co$^{3+}$ spin state in Sr$_2$Co$_{0.5}$Ir$_{0.5}$O$_4$: an x-ray absorption and magnetic circular dichroism study

We report on a combined soft x-ray absorption and magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) study at the Co-$L_{3,2}$ on the hybrid 3$d$/5$d$ solid state oxide Sr$_2$Co$_{0.5}$Ir$_{0.5}$O$_4$ with the K$_2$NiF$_4$ structure. Our data indicate unambiguously a pure high spin state $(S=2)$ for the Co$^{3+}$ (3$d^6$) ions with a significant unquenched orbital moment $L_z/2S_z=0.25$ despite the sizeable elongation of the CoO$_6$ octahedra. Using quantitative model calculations based on parameters consistent with our spectra, we have investigated the stability of this high spin state with respect to the competing low spin and intermediate spin states.

Magnetically induced Ferroelectricity in Bi$_2$CuO$_4$

The tetragonal copper oxide Bi$_2$CuO$_4$ has an unusual crystal structure with a three-dimensional network of well separated CuO$_4$ plaquettes. This material was recently predicted to host electronic excitations with an unconventional spectrum and the spin structure of its magnetically ordered state appearing at T$_N$ $\sim$43 K remains controversial. Here we present the results of detailed studies of specific heat, magnetic and dielectric properties of Bi$_2$CuO$_4$ single crystals grown by the floating zone technique, combined with the polarized neutron scattering and high-resolution X-ray measurements. Our polarized neutron scattering data show Cu spins are parallel to the $ab$ plane. Below the onset of the long range antiferromagnetic ordering we observe an electric polarization induced by an applied magnetic field, which indicates inversion symmetry breaking by the ordered state of Cu spins. For the magnetic field applied perpendicular to the tetragonal axis, the spin-induced ferroelectricity is explained in terms of the linear magnetoelectric effect that occurs in a metastable magnetic state. A relatively small electric polarization induced by the field parallel to the tetragonal axis may indicate a more complex magnetic ordering in Bi$_2$CuO$_4$.

Direct determination of the spin structure of Nd$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ by means of neutron diffraction

We report on the spin structure of the pyrochlore iridate Nd$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ that could be directly determined by means of powder neutron diffraction. Our magnetic structure refinement unravels a so-called all-in/all-out magnetic structure that appears in both, the Nd and the Ir sublattice. The ordered magnetic moments at 1.8 K amount to 0.34(1) $μ_\mathrm{B}$/Ir$^{4+}$ and 1.27(1) $μ_\mathrm{B}$/Nd$^{3+}$. The Nd$^{3+}$ moment size at 1.8 K is smaller than that expected for the Nd$^{3+}$ ground state doublet. On the other hand, the size of the ordered moments of the Ir$^{4+}$ ions at 1.8 K agrees very well with the value expected for a $J_\mathrm{eff}$ = 1/2 state based on the presence of strong spin-orbit coupling in this system. Finally, our measurements reveal a parallel alignment of the Nd$^{3+}$ moments with the net moment of its six nearest neighboring Ir$^{4+}$ ions.

Incommensurate spin correlations in highly oxidized cobaltates La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CoO$_{4}$

We observe quasi-static incommensurate magnetic peaks in neutron scattering experiments on layered cobalt oxides La2-xSrxCoO4 with high Co oxidation states that have been reported to be paramagnetic. This enables us to measure the magnetic excitations in this highly hole-doped incommensurate regime and compare our results with those found in the low-doped incommensurate regime that exhibit hourglass magnetic spectra. The hourglass shape of magnetic excitations completely disappears given a high Sr doping. Moreover, broad low-energy excitations are found, which are not centered at the incommensurate magnetic peak positions but around the quarter-integer values that are typically exhibited by excitations in the checkerboard charge ordered phase. Our findings suggest that the strong inter-site exchange interactions in the undoped islands are critical for the emergence of hourglass spectra in the incommensurate magnetic phases of La2-xSrxCoO4.

Universal dynamics and controlled switching of dissipative Kerr solitons in optical microresonators

Dissipative temporal Kerr solitons in optical microresonators enable to convert a continuous wave laser into a train of femtosecond pulses. Of particular interest are single soliton states, whose $\mathrm{sech}^{2}$ spectral envelope provides a spectrally smooth and low noise optical frequency comb, and that recently have been generated in crystalline, silica, and silicon-nitride resonators. Here, we study the dynamics of multiple soliton states containing ${N}$ solitons and report the discovery of a novel, yet simple mechanism which makes it possible to reduce deterministically the number of solitons, one by one, i.e. ${N\! \to\! N\!-\!1\! \to\! \dots \!\to\! 1}$. By applying weak phase modulation, we directly characterize the soliton state via a double-resonance response. The dynamical probing demonstrates that transitions occur in a predictable way, and thereby enables us to map experimentally the underlying multi-stability diagram of dissipative Kerr solitons. These measurements reveal the "lifted" degeneracy of soliton states as a result of the power-dependent thermal shift of the cavity resonance (i.e. the thermal nonlinearity). The experimental results are in agreement with theoretical and numerical analysis that incorporate the thermal nonlinearity. By studying two different microresonator platforms (integrated $\mathrm{Si_{3}N_{4}}$ microresonators and crystalline $\mathrm{MgF_{2}}$ resonators) we confirm that these effects have a universal nature. Beyond elucidating the fundamental dynamical properties of dissipative Kerr solitons the observed phenomena are also of practical relevance, providing a manipulation toolbox which enables to sequentially reduce, monitor and stabilize the number ${N}$ of solitons, preventing it from decay. Achieving reliable single soliton operation and stabilization in this manner in optical resonators is imperative to applications.

Theory and experiment on cavity magnon polariton in the 1D configuration

We have theoretically and experimentally investigated the dispersion of the cavity-magnon-polariton (CMP) in a 1D configuration, created by inserting a low damping magnetic insulator into a high-quality 1D microwave cavity. By simplifying the full-wave simulation based on the transfer matrix approach in the long wavelength limit, an analytic approximation of the CMP dispersion has been obtained. The resultant coupling strength of the CMP shows different dependence on the sample thickness as well as the permittivity of the sample, determined by the parity of the cavity modes. These scaling effects of the cavity and material parameters are confirmed by experimental data. Our work provide a detailed understanding of the 1D CMP, which could help to engineer coupled magnon-photon system.

Nature of Intra-night Optical Variability of BL Lacertae

We present the results of extensive multi-band intra-night optical monitoring of BL Lacertae during 2010--2012. BL Lacertae was very active in this period and showed intense variability in almost all wavelengths. We extensively observed it for a total for 38 nights; on 26 of them observations were done quasi-simultaneously in B, V, R and I bands (totaling 113 light curves), with an average sampling interval of around 8 minutes. BL Lacertae showed significant variations on hour-like timescales in a total of 19 nights in different optical bands. We did not find any evidence for periodicities or characteristic variability time-scales in the light curves. The intranight variability amplitude is generally greater at higher frequencies and decreases as the source flux increases. We found spectral variations in BL Lacertae in the sense that the optical spectrum becomes flatter as the flux increases but in several flaring states deviates from the linear trend suggesting different jet components contributing to the emission at different times.

Measurement of Azimuthal Modulations in the Cross-Section of Di-Pion Pairs in Di-Jet Production from Electron-Positron Annihilation

We present an extraction of azimuthal correlations between two pairs of charged pions detected in opposite jets from electron-positron annihilation. These correlations may arise from the dependence of the di-pion fragmentation on the polarization of the parent quark in the process $e^+e^- \rightarrow q \bar{q}$. Due to the correlation of the quark polarizations, the cross-section of di-pion pair production, in which the pion pairs are detected in opposite jets in a dijet event, exhibits a modulation in the azimuthal angles of the planes containing the hadron pairs with respect to the production plane. The measurement of this modulation allows access to combinations of fragmentation functions that are sensitive to the quark's transverse polarization and helicity. Within our uncertainties we do not observe a significant signal from the previously unmeasured helicity dependent fragmentation function $G_1^\perp$. This measurement uses a dataset of 938~fb$^{-1}$ collected by the Belle experiment at or near $\sqrt{s}\approx10.58$ GeV.

High sensitivity microwave detection using a magnetic tunnel junction in the absence of an external applied magnetic field

In the absence of any external applied magnetic field, we have found that a magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) can produce a significant output direct voltage under microwave radiation at frequencies, which are far from the ferromagnetic resonance condition, and this voltage signal can be increase by at least an order of magnitude by applying a direct current bias. The enhancement of the microwave detection can be explained by the nonlinear resistance/conductance of the MTJs. Our estimation suggests that optimized MTJs should achieve sensitivities for non-resonant broadband microwave detection of about 5,000 mV/mW.

Measurement of the amplitude ratio of $B^0 \to D^0K^{*0}$ and $B^0 \to \bar{D^0}K^{*0}$ decays with a model-independent Dalitz plot analysis using $D\to K_S^0π^+π^-$ decays

We report a measurement of the amplitude ratio $r_S$ of $B^0 \to D^0K^{*0}$ and $B^0 \to \bar{D^0}K^{*0}$ decays with a model-independent Dalitz plot analysis using $D\to K_S^0π^+π^-$ decays. Using the full data sample of $772\times10^6$ $B\bar{B}$ pairs collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at KEKB accelerator the upper limit is $r_S < 0.87$ at the 68 % confidence level. This result is the first measurement of $r_S$ with a model-independent Dalitz analysis, and is consistent with results from other analyses. The value of $r_S$ indicates the sensitivity of the decay to $ϕ_3$ because the statistical uncertainty is proportional to $1/r_S$. The $r_S$ result is obtained from observables ($x_\pm$, $y_\pm$) \begin{eqnarray} x_- &=& +0.4 ^{+1.0 +0.0}_{-0.6 -0.1} \pm0.0 \\ y_- &=& -0.6 ^{+0.8 +0.1}_{-1.0 -0.0} \pm0.1 \\ x_+ &=& +0.1 ^{+0.7 +0.0}_{-0.4 -0.1} \pm0.1 \\ y_+ &=& +0.3 ^{+0.5 +0.0}_{-0.8 -0.1} \pm0.1 \\ , \end{eqnarray} where $x_\pm = r_S \cos(δ_S \pm ϕ_3)$, $y_\pm = r_S \sin(δ_S \pm ϕ_3)$ and $ϕ_3 (δ_S)$ are the weak (strong) phase difference between $B^0 \to D^0K^{*0}$ and $B^0 \to \bar{D^0}K^{*0}$. The first uncertainty is statistical, the second is the experimental systematic and the third is the systematic due to the uncertainties on $c_i$ and $s_i$ parameters measured by CLEO.

Measurement of the branching fraction of $B^+ \to τ^+ ν_τ$ decays with the semileptonic tagging method and the full Belle data sample

We report a measurement of the branching fraction of $B^+ \to τ^+ ν_τ$ decays using a data sample of $772 \times 10^6 B \bar{B}$ pairs, collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider. We reconstruct the accompanying $B$ meson in a semileptonic decay and detect the $B^+ \to τ^+ ν_τ$ candidate in the recoiling event. We obtain a branching fraction of ${\cal B}(B^+ \to τ^+ ν_τ) = [1.25 \pm 0.28 ({\rm stat.}) \pm 0.27({\rm syst.})] \times 10^{-4}$. This result is in good agreement with previous measurements and the expectation from calculations based on the Standard Model.

Accessing defect dynamics using intense, nanosecond pulsed ion beams

Gaining in-situ access to relaxation dynamics of radiation induced defects will lead to a better understanding of materials and is important for the verification of theoretical models and simulations. We show preliminary results from experiments at the new Neutralized Drift Compression Experiment (NDCX-II) at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory that will enable in-situ access to defect dynamics through pump-probe experiments. Here, the unique capabilities of the NDCX-II accelerator to generate intense, nanosecond pulsed ion beams are utilized. Preliminary data of channeling experiments using lithium and potassium ions and silicon membranes are shown. We compare these data to simulation results using Crystal Trim. Furthermore, we discuss the improvements to the accelerator to higher performance levels and the new diagnostics tools that are being incorporated.

Strain driven anisotropic magnetoresistance in antiferromagnetic La$_{0.4}$Sr$_{0.6}$MnO$_{3}$

We investigate the effects of strain on antiferromagntic (AFM) single crystal thin films of La$_{1-x}$Sr$_{x}$MnO$_{3}$ (x = 0.6). Nominally unstrained samples have strong magnetoresistance with anisotropic magnetoresistances (AMR) of up to 8%. Compressive strain suppresses magnetoresistance but generates AMR values of up to 63%. Tensile strain presents the only case of a metal-insulator transition and demonstrates a previously unreported AMR behavior. In all three cases, we find evidence of magnetic ordering and no indication of a global ferromagnetic phase transition. These behaviors are attributed to epitaxy induced changes in orbital occupation driving different magnetic ordering types. Our findings suggest that different AFM ordering types have a profound impact on the AMR magnitude and character.

Generating mid-IR octave-spanning supercontinua and few-cycle pulses with solitons in phase-mismatched quadratic nonlinear crystals

We discuss a novel method for generating octave-spanning supercontinua and few-cycle pulses in the important mid-IR wavelength range. The technique relies on strongly phase-mismatched cascaded second-harmonic generation (SHG) in mid-IR nonlinear frequency conversion crystals. Importantly we here investigate the so-called noncritical SHG case, where no phase matching can be achieved but as a compensation the largest quadratic nonlinearities are exploited. A self-defocusing temporal soliton can be excited if the cascading nonlinearity is larger than the competing material self-focusing nonlinearity, and we define a suitable figure of merit to screen a wide range of mid-IR dielectric and semiconductor materials with large effective second-order nonlinearities $d_{\rm eff}$. The best candidates have simultaneously a large bandgap and a large $d_{\rm eff}$. We show selected realistic numerical examples using one of the promising crystals: in one case soliton pulse compression from 50 fs to 15 fs (1.5 cycles) at $3.0\mic$ is achieved, and at the same time a 3-cycle dispersive wave at $5.0\mic$ is formed that can be isolated using a long-pass filter. In another example we show that extremely broadband supercontinua can form spanning the near-IR to the end of the mid-IR (nearly 4 octaves).

Adsorption of PTCDA and C60 on KBr(001): electrostatic interaction versus electronic hybridization

The adsorption of functional molecules on insulator surfaces is of great importance to molecular electronics. We present a systematical investigation of geometric and electronic properties of PTCDA and C60 on KBr(001) using DFT and non-contact atomic force microscopy. It was found that electrostatics is the primary interaction mechanism for PTCDA and C60 adsorbed on KBr. It was thus concluded that alkali-halides is a competitive candidate to be adopted to support low polarizability molecules, such as PTCDA, in future electronics.
