Color coherence in multi-jet final states

We discuss coherent QCD radiation from space-like parton branching and its effects on multi-jet final states at high-energy hadron colliders. Coherence effects for small longitudinal momentum fractions x are not included in the branching algorithms of standard shower Monte Carlo event generators. On the other hand, they are taken into account only partially in perturbative next-to-leading-order calculations for multi-jets. Such effects are present to all orders in alpha_s and can become logarithmically enhanced with \sqrt{s} / E_T, where E_T is the hardest jet transverse energy. We present results of summing coherence effects to all orders by parton-branching Monte Carlo methods based on transverse-momentum dependent matrix elements.

Angular correlations in multi-jet final states from kt-dependent parton showers

We investigate parton-branching methods based on transverse-momentum dependent (TMD) parton distributions and matrix elements for the Monte Carlo simulation of multi-particle final states at high-energy colliders. We observe that recently measured angular correlations in ep final states with multiple hadronic jets probe QCD coherence effects in the space-like branching, associated with finite-angle gluon radiation from partons carrying small longitudinal momenta, and not included in standard shower generators. We present Monte Carlo calculations for azimuthal two-jet and three-jet distributions, for jet multiplicities and for correlations in the transverse-momentum imbalance between the leading jets. We discuss comparisons with current experimental multi-jet data, and implications of corrections to collinear-ordered showers for LHC final states.

An approach to fast fits of the unintegrated gluon density

An approach to fast fits of the unintegrated gluon density has been developed and used to determine the unintegrated gluon density by fits to deep inelastic scatting di-jet data from HERA. The fitting method is based on the determination of the parameter dependence by help of interpolating between grid points in the parameter-observable space before the actual fit is performed.

Jet correlations from unintegrated parton distributions

Transverse-momentum dependent parton distributions can be introduced gauge-invariantly in QCD from high-energy factorization. We discuss Monte Carlo applications of these distributions to parton showers and jet physics, with a view to the implications for the Monte Carlo description of complex hadronic final states with multiple hard scales at the LHC.

Three-jet DIS final states from kt-dependent parton showers

Experimental measurements of angular correlations in three-jet final states have recently been performed in DIS. Next-to-leading-order QCD results for these observables are affected by large theoretical uncertainties in the kinematic region of the data. We discuss the effects of multiple QCD radiation at higher order using parton-shower methods based on transverse-momentum dependent parton distributions and matrix elements. We present Monte-Carlo results for azimuthal two-jet and three-jet distributions, and discuss the comparison with experimental data.

Recent results on unintegrated parton distributions

We summarize recent results on i) the use of u-pdf's in the Monte-Carlo simulation of hadronic final states at high-energy colliders, and ii) attempts to characterize u-pdf's with precision in terms of nonlocal operator matrix elements.

Critical tests of unintegrated gluon distributions

We use the unintegrated Parton Density Functions of the gluon obtained from a fit to measurements of the structure functions F2 and F2c at HERA to describe the experimental data for F2b, FL and FL at fixed W.

HERA and the LHC - A workshop on the implications of HERA for LHC physics: Proceedings - Part B

The HERA electron--proton collider has collected 100 pb$^{-1}$ of data since its start-up in 1992, and recently moved into a high-luminosity operation mode, with upgraded detectors, aiming to increase the total integrated luminosity per experiment to more than 500 pb$^{-1}$. HERA has been a machine of excellence for the study of QCD and the structure of the proton. The Large Hadron Collider (LHC), which will collide protons with a centre-of-mass energy of 14 TeV, will be completed at CERN in 2007. The main mission of the LHC is to discover and study the mechanisms of electroweak symmetry breaking, possibly via the discovery of the Higgs particle, and search for new physics in the TeV energy scale, such as supersymmetry or extra dimensions. Besides these goals, the LHC will also make a substantial number of precision measurements and will offer a new regime to study the strong force via perturbative QCD processes and diffraction. For the full LHC physics programme a good understanding of QCD phenomena and the structure function of the proton is essential. Therefore, in March 2004, a one-year-long workshop started to study the implications of HERA on LHC physics. This included proposing new measurements to be made at HERA, extracting the maximum information from the available data, and developing/improving the theoretical and experimental tools. This report summarizes the results achieved during this workshop.

Heavy Quarks: Summary Report

The present status of the heavy-quark production theory is critically reviewed in the first contribution. The second contribution summarises the present heavy flavour data from HERA and gives an outlook of what can be expected from HERA-II. The potential of the LHC experiments for charm and beauty physics is reviewed in the 3rd contribution. Then the relevance of saturation and small-x effects to heavy quark production at HERA and at the LHC are discussed. The non-perturbative aspects of heavy-quark fragmentation and their relevance to HERA and LHC are discussed in the next contribution. Finally, a comparison of different theoretical predictions for HERA and LHC based on different approaches is presented.

Towards precision determination of unintegrated Parton Density Functions

First attempts are described to determine the unintegrated Parton Density Function of the gluon from a fit to measurements of the structure function $F_2(x,Q^2)$ and also $F_2^c(x,Q^2)$ measured at HERA. Reasonable descriptions of both structure functions are obtained, but the gluon densities determined are different.

HZTool and Rivet: Toolkit and Framework for the Comparison of Simulated Final States and Data at Colliders

A common problem in particle physics is the requirement to reproduce comparisons between data and theory when the theory is a (general purpose) Monte Carlo simulation and the data are measurements of final state observables in high energy collisions. The complexity of the experiments, the obervables and the models all contribute to making this a highly non-trivial task. We describe an existing library of Fortran routines, HZTool, which enables, for each measurement of interest, a comparable prediction to be produced from any given Monte Carlo generator. The HZTool library is being maintained by CEDAR, with subroutines for various measurements contributed by a number of authors within and outside the CEDAR collaboration. We also describe the outline design and current status of a replacement for HZTool, to be called Rivet (Robust Independent Validation of Experiment and Theory). This will use an object-oriented design, implemented in C++, together with standard interfaces (such as HepMC and AIDA) to make the new framework more flexible and extensible than the Fortran HZTool.

The Unintegrated Gluon Density in the Photon and Heavy Quark Production

The production cross section of heavy quarks in real and virtual photon-photon collisions has been studied. The unintegrated gluon density in the photon was obtained using the full CCFM evolution equation for the first time. The gluon density was implemented in the Monte Carlo generator CASCADE, and cross sections for heavy quark production in $e^+e^-$ collisions were calculated and compared to LEP data. Also, predictions for heavy quark cross sections in $e^+e^-$ and $γγ$ collisions at TESLA energies are given.
