Notes on sums over horizons

For a large class of black holes, we show that the sum of thermodynamic quantities over all the horizons is determined by the asymptotic data at infinity. For the Kerr-Newman metric, this proves a recent numerical observation by Hristov. We propose a new method to compute the sum of the entropies using a generalized Smarr formula. The higher-curvature corrections in Gauss-Bonnet gravity are discussed.

Regular Electric Black Holes from EMS Gravity

We construct Einstein-Maxwell-Scalar (EMS) theories that admit regular electric black holes. Such a Maxwell-scalar theory is equivalent to some nonlinear electrodynamics (NLED) at the level of equations of motion, but it has the advantage of circumventing the no-go theorem of regular electric black holes under a given Lagrangian of NLED. We study the thermodynamics and show that the mass of the regular black hole can be determined solely by the Maxwell field, without having to know the metric profile function. Our formalism allows to study the applications of the electrically-charged regular black holes in areas that were previously available only to the non-regular ones.

Quadratic Curvature Correction and Its Breakdown to Thermodynamics of Rotating Black Holes

We adopt the Reall-Santos method to obtain the quadratic curvature corrections to the thermodynamics of Myers-Perry rotating black holes in diverse dimensions. We consider the corrections in canonical and grand canonical ensembles, and also for fixed mass and angular momenta. We find that there exist inevitable divergences for generic rotation parameters so that the perturbative approach breaks down. We present a simple and universal formula to determine where these divergences could arise, and argue, using an explicit example, that these divergences are artefact of perturbation and may not exist in the full nonlinear theory.

A Space/Time Interchange Symmetry of Rotating AdS Black Holes in General Dimensions

We revisit the previously known local inversion symmetry of the five-dimensional Kerr-AdS metric that relates the over-rotating black hole to the under-rotating one and reinterpret it as an interchanging symmetry between time and the longitudinal angular coordinates. We generalize this to all $D$ dimensions, including $D=4$, thereby enlarging the trivial linear $\mathbb Z_N$ symmetry of the $N=\lfloor(D-1)/2\rfloor$ longitudinal angular coordinates to the nonlinearly realized $\mathbb Z_{N+1}$ symmetry that involves time.

Improved Reall-Santos method for AdS black holes in general 4-derivative gravities

For asymptotically flat black holes, Reall-Santos method is a convenient tool to compute leading higher derivative corrections to the thermodynamic quantities without actually solving the modified field equations. However, there are subtleties in its generalization to asymptotically AdS black holes with general higher derivative corrections. First of all, it is necessary to know all the higher derivative holographic counterterms and the surface terms implementing the variational principle and subtracting the divergence. One then needs to solve for the modified AdS radius and rescale the time coordinate in an appropriate way such that the induced metric on the conformal boundary of AdS black hole is not modified. We observe that Reall-Santos method can be directly applied to a particular 4-derivative gravity model, known as the Einstein-Weyl gravity, which does not modify the AdS radius and requires only the Gibbons-Hawking-York term and holographic counterterms for the 2-derivative theory. We thus suggest that to compute the thermodynamic quantities of AdS black holes in general 4-derivative theories of gravity, one simply needs to transform it to a Einstein-Weyl gravity with identical thermodynamic variables by appropriate field redefinitions. We explicitly verify this proposal with spherically-symmetric and static charged black holes in Einstein-Maxwell theory extended with generic 4-derivative interactions.

Boosted Rotating Dyonic Strings in Salam-Sezgin Model

We show that the bosonic sector of the $N=(1,0),\, 6D$ Salam-Sezgin gauged supergravity model possesses a $T$-duality symmetry upon a circle reduction to $D=5$. We then construct a simple magnetic rotating string solution with two equal angular momenta. Applying the $T$-duality transformation to this solution, we obtain the general boosted rotating dyonic black string solutions whose global structures and thermodynamic quantities are also analyzed. Owing to the fact that the solutions are not asymptotically flat, we find that there are two distinct globally-different non-extremal solutions with two different sets of thermal dynamic variables, with both satisfying the thermodynamic first law and the corresponding Small relations. However, their BPS limit becomes the same and we show that it preserves one quarter of supersymmetry by directly solving the corresponding Killing spinor equations.

Superradiant Instability of Charged Extremal Black Holes in Einstein-Born-Infeld Gravity

We study charged scalar perturbations of charged extremal black holes in Einstein-Born-Infeld theory. Our numerical results indicate that these black holes all suffer from superradiant instability by the unstable quasi-bound states, regardless how small the coupling constant is. We therefore provide a new example that the superradiant stability of the Reissner-Nordström black hole is a fine-tuned result, as in the case when it is embedded in the STU supergravity model. The work is also motivated by the weak gravity conjecture since at the linear coupling constant level, the theory belongs to a subsect of four-derivative corrections in the effective field theory. Our results appear to support the notion that the black holes do decay when gravity is weaker by the correction, but the decaying halftime requires nonlinear effects and cannot be seen at the level of linear coupling constant. The full nonlinear effects also indicate that the black holes can decay even when gravity is stronger.

Universal orbital and magnetic structures in infinite-layer nickelates

We conducted a comparative study of the rare-earth infinite-layer nickelates films, RNiO2 (R = La, Pr, and Nd) using resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS). We found that the gross features of the orbital configurations are essentially the same, with minor variations in the detailed hybridization. For low-energy excitations, we unambiguously confirm the presence of damped magnetic excitations in all three compounds. By fitting to a linear spin-wave theory, comparable spin exchange coupling strengths and damping coefficients are extracted, indicating a universal magnetic structure in the infinite-layer nickelates. Interestingly, while signatures of a charge order are observed in LaNiO2 in the quasi-elastic region of the RIXS spectrum, it is absent in NdNiO2 and PrNiO2. This prompts further investigation into the universality and the origins of charge order within the infinite-layer inickelates.

Holographic Three-Point Functions from Higher Curvature Gravities in Arbitrary Dimensions

We calculate the holographic three-point function parameters $\mathcal A$, $\mathcal B$, $\mathcal C$ in general $d\geqslant 4$ dimensions from higher curvature gravities up to and including the quartic order. The result is valid both for massless and perturbative higher curvature gravities. It is known that in four dimensional CFT the $a$-charge is a linear combination of $\mathcal A$, $\mathcal B$, $\mathcal C$, our result reproduces this but also shows that a similar relation does not exist for general $d > 4$. We then compute the Weyl anomaly in $d = 6$ and found all the three $c$-charges are linear combinations of $\mathcal A$, $\mathcal B$, $\mathcal C$, which is consistent with that the $a$-charge is not. We also find the previously conjectured relation between $t_2$, $t_4$, $h''$ does not hold in general massless gravities, but holds for quasi-topological ones, and we obtain the missing coefficient.

Thermodynamics of Taub-NUT and Plebanski Solutions

We observe the parallel between the null Killing vector on the horizon and degenerate Killing vectors at both north and south poles in Kerr-Taub-NUT and general Plebanski solutions. This suggests a correspondence between the pairs of the angular momentum/velocity and the NUT charge/potential. We treat the time as a real line such that the Misner strings are physical. We find that the NUT charge spreads along the Misner strings, analogous to that the mass in the Schwarzschild black hole sits at its spacetime singularity. We develop procedures to calculate all the thermodynamic quantities and we find that the results are consistent with the first law (Wald formalism), the Euclidean action and the Smarr relation. We also apply the Wald formalism, the Euclidean action approach, and the (generalized) Komar integration to the electric and magnetic black holes in a class of EMD theories, and also to boosted black strings and Kaluza-Klein monopoles in five dimensions, to gain better understandings of how to deal with the subtleties associated with Dirac and Misner strings.

$D=5$ Rotating Black Holes in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet Gravity: Mass and Angular Momentum in Extremality

We consider perturbative solutions in Einstein gravity with higher-derivative extensions and address some subtle issues of taking extremal limit. As a concrete new result, we construct the perturbative rotating black hole in five dimensions with equal angular momenta $J$ and general mass $M$ in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity, up to and including the linear order of the standard Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant $α$. We obtain the near horizon structure of the near extremal solution, with the blackening factor of the order $α$. In the extremal limit, the mass-angular momentum relation reduces to $M=\frac32 π^{\frac13} J^{\frac23} + πα$. The positive sign of the $α$-correction implies that the centrifugal repulsion associated with rotations becomes weaker than the gravitational attraction under the unitary requirement for the Gauss-Bonnet term.

Dyonic Black Strings and the Charge Lattice in Salam-Sezgin model

We obtain a class of dyonic black string solutions in 6D Salam-Sezgin model. We then calculate various thermodynamic quantities associated with this solution. Interestingly, for the thermodynamic quantities to be well defined, the temperature is bounded from above. However, the mass and entropy can still grow without any upper bound, reaching infinity at the maximal temperature. The quantization condition obeyed by various charges is also analyzed. In particular, we find that the Dirac quantization condition selects one particular sign choice for the magnetic string charges.

Negative Corrections to Black Hole Entropy from String Theory

We report for the first time that in heterotic string compactified on 4-torus or equivalently IIA string compactified on K3, the leading $α'$ corrections to the rotating black string entropy at fixed conserved charges can be negative. This further implies that the correction to the mass of extremal rotating string is positive, opposite to the standard expectation from the weak gravity conjecture. Our result suggests that the validity of positivity of entropy shift due to higher order operators depends on other factors omitted previously in the effective field theory analysis.

Measurement of the Gamma-Ray Energy Spectrum beyond 100 TeV from the HESS J1843$-$033 Region

HESS J1843$-$033 is a very-high-energy gamma-ray source whose origin remains unidentified. This work presents, for the first time, the energy spectrum of gamma rays beyond $100\, {\rm TeV}$ from the HESS J1843$-$033 region using the data recorded by the Tibet air shower array and its underground muon detector array. A gamma-ray source with an extension of $0.34^{\circ} \pm 0.12^{\circ}$ is successfully detected above $25\, {\rm TeV}$ at $(α,\, δ) = (281.09^{\circ}\pm 0.10^{\circ},\, -3.76^{\circ}\pm 0.09^{\circ})$ near HESS J1843$-$033 with a statistical significance of $6.2\, σ$, and the source is named TASG J1844$-$038. The position of TASG J1844$-$038 is consistent with those of HESS J1843$-$033, eHWC J1842$-$035, and LHAASO J1843$-$0338. The measured gamma-ray energy spectrum in $25\, {\rm TeV} < E < 130\, {\rm TeV}$ is described with ${\rm d}N/{\rm d}E = (9.70\pm 1.89)\times 10^{-16} (E/40\, {\rm TeV})^{-3.26\pm 0.30}\, {\rm TeV}^{-1} {\rm cm}^{-2} {\rm s}^{-1}$, and the spectral fit to the combined spectra of HESS J1843$-$033, LHAASO J1843$-$0338, and TASG J1844$-$038 implies the existence of a cutoff at $49.5\pm 9.0\, {\rm TeV}$. Associations of TASG J1844-038 with SNR G28.6$-$0.1 and PSR J1844-0346 are also discussed in detail for the first time.

Observation of gamma rays up to 320 TeV from the middle-aged TeV pulsar wind nebula HESS J1849$-$000

Gamma rays from HESS J1849$-$000, a middle-aged TeV pulsar wind nebula (PWN), are observed by the Tibet air shower array and the muon detector array. The detection significance of gamma rays reaches $4.0\, σ$ and $4.4\, σ$ levels above 25 TeV and 100 TeV, respectively, in units of Gaussian standard deviation $σ$. The energy spectrum measured between $40\, {\rm TeV} < E < 320\, {\rm TeV}$ for the first time is described with a simple power-law function of ${\rm d}N/{\rm d}E = (2.86 \pm 1.44) \times 10^{-16}(E/40\, {\rm TeV})^{-2.24 \pm 0.41}\, {\rm TeV}^{-1}\, {\rm cm}^{-2}\, {\rm s}^{-1}$. The gamma-ray energy spectrum from the sub-TeV ($E < 1\, {\rm TeV}$) to sub-PeV ($100\, {\rm TeV} < E < 1\, {\rm PeV}$) ranges including the results of previous studies can be modeled with the leptonic scenario, inverse Compton scattering by high-energy electrons accelerated by the PWN of PSR J1849$-$0001. On the other hand, the gamma-ray energy spectrum can also be modeled with the hadronic scenario in which gamma rays are generated from the decay of neutral pions produced by collisions between accelerated cosmic-ray protons and the ambient molecular cloud found in the gamma-ray emitting region. The cutoff energy of cosmic-ray protons $E_{\rm p\, cut}$, cut is estimated at ${\rm log}_{10}(E_{\rm p,\, cut}/{\rm TeV}) = 3.73^{+2.98}_{-0.66}$, suggesting that protons are accelerated up to the PeV energy range. Our study thus proposes that HESS J1849$-$000 should be further investigated as a new candidate for a Galactic PeV cosmic-ray accelerator, PeVatron.

Vulnerability of Horizon Regularity: Horizon as a Natural Boundary

We consider Einstein gravity extended with Riemann-squared term and construct the leading-order perturbative solution to the rotating black hole with all equal angular momenta in $D=7$. We find that in the extremal limit, the linear perturbation involves irrational powers in the near-horizon expansion. We argue that, despite that all curvature tensor invariants are regular on the horizon, the irrational power implies that the inside of the horizon is destroyed and the horizon becomes the natural boundary of the spacetime. We demonstrate that this vulnerability of the horizon regularity is an innate part of Einstein theory, and can arise in Einstein theory with minimally coupled matter. However, in fine-tuned theories such as supergravities, the black hole inside is preserved, which may be one of the criteria for a consistent theory of quantum gravity. We also show that the vulnerability occurs in general higher dimensions, which only a few sporadically distributed dimensions can evade.

Higher derivative contributions to black hole thermodynamics at NNLO

In an effective theory of gravity, thermodynamic quantities of black holes receive corrections from the infinite series of higher derivative terms. At the next to leading order, these can be obtained by using only the leading order solution. In this paper, we push forward this property to the next to next to leading order. We propose a formula which yields the Euclidean action of asymptotically flat black holes at the next to next to leading order using only the solution up to and including the next to leading order. Other conserved quantities are derived from the Euclidean action via standard thermodynamic relation. We verify our formula in examples of $D$-dimensional pure gravity and Einstein-Maxwell theory extended by 4- and 6-derivative terms. Based on our formula, we also prove that for asymptotically flat black holes, the physical quantities are invariant under field redefinitions.

New determination of the branching ratio of the structure dependent radiative $K^{+} \to e^{+} ν_{e} γ$ decay

The branching ratio of the structure dependent (SD) radiative $K^{+} \to e^{+} ν_{e} γ$ decay relative to that of the $K^+\rightarrow e^+ ν_{e} (γ)$ decay including the internal bremsstrahlung (IB) process ($K_{e2(γ)}$) has been measured in the J-PARC E36 experiment using plastic scintillator/lead sandwich detectors. In the analysis, the effect of IB was also taken into account in the SD radiative decay as $K_{e2γ(γ)}^{\rm SD}$. By combining the new data with the previously reported result of the E36 experiment using a CsI(Tl) calorimeter after revision for the IB correction for $K_{e2γ(γ)}^{\rm SD}$, a new value $Br(K_{e2γ(γ)}^{\rm SD})/Br(K_{e2(γ)})=1.20\pm0.07$ has been determined, which is consistent with a recent lattice QCD calculation, but larger than the expectation of Chiral Perturbation Theory (ChPT) at order $O(p^4)$ and the previous KLOE value. Also, using the method to relate form factor and branching ratio described in the KLOE paper, the present result is consistent with the form factor prediction based on a gauged nonlocal chiral quark model, but larger than ChPT at order $O(p^6)$.
