The New Small Wheel electronics

The increase in luminosity, and consequent higher backgrounds, of the LHC upgrades require improved rejection of fake tracks in the forward region of the ATLAS Muon Spectrometer. The New Small Wheel upgrade of the Muon Spectrometer aims to reduce the large background of fake triggers from track segments that are not originated from the interaction point. The New Small Wheel employs two detector technologies, the resistive strip Micromegas detectors and the "small" Thin Gap Chambers, with a total of 2.45 Million electrodes to be sensed. The two technologies require the design of a complex electronics system given that it consists of two different detector technologies and is required to provide both precision readout and a fast trigger. It will operate in a high background radiation region up to about 20 kHz/cm$^{2}$ at the expected HL-LHC luminosity of $\mathcal{L}$=7.5$\times10^{34}$cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$. The architecture of the system is strongly defined by the GBTx data aggregation ASIC, the newly-introduced FELIX data router and the software based data handler of the ATLAS detector. The electronics complex of this new detector was designed and developed in the last ten years and consists of multiple radiation tolerant Application Specific Integrated Circuits, multiple front-end boards, dense boards with FPGA's and purpose-built Trigger Processor boards within the ATCA standard. The New Small Wheel has been installed in 2021 and is undergoing integration within ATLAS for LHC Run 3. It should operate through the end of Run 4 (December 2032). In this manuscript, the overall design of the New Small Wheel electronics is presented.

Regular Black Holes and Stars from Analytic $f(F^2)$

We construct regular black holes and stars that are geodesically complete and satisfy the dominant energy condition from Einstein-$f(F^2)$ gravities with several classes of analytic $f(F^2)$ functions that can be viewed as perturbations to Maxwell's theory in weak field limit. We establish that regular black holes with special static metric ($g_{tt} g_{rr}=-1$) violate the strong energy condition and such a regular black hole with Minkowski core violates the null energy condition. We develop a formalism to perform electromagnetic duality transformations in $f(F^2)$. We obtain two new explicit examples where the duality is a symmetry. We study the properties of the corresponding dyonic black holes. We study the geodesic motions of a particular class of solutions that we call repulson stars or black holes.

CH-Go: Online Go System Based on Chunk Data Storage

The training and running of an online Go system require the support of effective data management systems to deal with vast data, such as the initial Go game records, the feature data set obtained by representation learning, the experience data set of self-play, the randomly sampled Monte Carlo tree, and so on. Previous work has rarely mentioned this problem, but the ability and efficiency of data management systems determine the accuracy and speed of the Go system. To tackle this issue, we propose an online Go game system based on the chunk data storage method (CH-Go), which processes the format of 160k Go game data released by Kiseido Go Server (KGS) and designs a Go encoder with 11 planes, a parallel processor and generator for better memory performance. Specifically, we store the data in chunks, take the chunk size of 1024 as a batch, and save the features and labels of each chunk as binary files. Then a small set of data is randomly sampled each time for the neural network training, which is accessed by batch through yield method. The training part of the prototype includes three modules: supervised learning module, reinforcement learning module, and an online module. Firstly, we apply Zobrist-guided hash coding to speed up the Go board construction. Then we train a supervised learning policy network to initialize the self-play for generation of experience data with 160k Go game data released by KGS. Finally, we conduct reinforcement learning based on REINFORCE algorithm. Experiments show that the training accuracy of CH- Go in the sampled 150 games is 99.14%, and the accuracy in the test set is as high as 98.82%. Under the condition of limited local computing power and time, we have achieved a better level of intelligence. Given the current situation that classical systems such as GOLAXY are not free and open, CH-Go has realized and maintained complete Internet openness.

A Complete Approach to Determine the $^3$He neutron incoherent scattering length $b_i$

We report the first results from a new approach for measuring the $^3$He neutron incoherent scattering length $b_{i}$. $b_{i}$ is directly proportional to the difference $Δb=b_{+}-b_{-}$ in the two low-energy s-wave neutron-nucleus scattering amplitudes $b_{+}$ and $b_{-}$, corresponding to the singlet $J=0$ and triplet $J=1$ states of the neutron-$^3$He interaction, respectively. An accurate measurement of $b_{i}$ can help distinguish among different models of three-nucleon interactions by comparison to {\it ab initio} nuclear theory calculations. The neutron birefringence caused by $Δb$ results in neutron spin rotation around the nuclear polarization. We measured $Δb$ using polarized neutron spin rotation and the transmission of neutrons through a $^3$He gas target polarized in situ by spin-exchange optical pumping. This brief test measurement, conducted at the FZ-Jülich neutron spin echo spectrometer at the Heinz Maier Leibnitz Zentrum (MLZ), yielded $Δb = [-5.27 \pm 0.05$ (stat.) $- 0.05$ (syst.)] fm. We argue that this method can be improved in precision to resolve the discrepancies between two prior measurements of $b_i$ which are dependent on the polarized absorption cross section $σ_p$. Further with absolute $^{3}$He polarization via NMR (in a properly-shaped cell) concurrent with accurate neutron transmission measurements, $σ_p$ can be measured to obtain independent values of $b_{+}$ and $b_{-}$.

First Measurement of Neutron Birefringence in Polarized $^{129}$Xe and $^{131}$Xe Nuclei

We present the first measurements of polarized neutron birefringence in transmission through nuclear-polarized $^{129}$Xe and $^{131}$Xe gas and determine the neutron incoherent scattering lengths $b_i(^{129}Xe)=0.186\pm(0.021)_{stat.}\pm(0.004)_{syst.}\space\text{ fm}$ and $b_i(^{131}Xe)=2.09\pm(0.29)_{stat.}\pm(0.12)_{syst.}\space\text{ fm}$ for the first time. These results determine the essential parameter needed for interpretation of spin-dependent neutron-scattering studies on polarized xenon ensembles, with possible future applications ranging from tests of time-reversal violation to mode-entangled neutron scattering experiments on nuclear-polarized systems.

General Solutions of Einstein Gravity at $D\rightarrow 2$

Einstein gravity at $D\rightarrow 2$ limit can be obtained from the Kaluza-Klein procedure by taking the dimensions of the internal space to zero while keeping only the breathing mode. The resulting scalar-tensor theory can be further reduced to JT gravity or the Liouville CFT at the large central charge limit, bridging the two important 2d models. We study the general solutions of the theory, including black holes and wormholes for both positive and negative cosmological constants. We obtain the on-shell action of the nearly AdS$_2$ and show that for suitable boundary slices, the Schwarzian action governs the leading-order dynamics at the finite boundary cutoff in later time. For positive cosmological constant, we find that the scalar is well defined on the 2-sphere.

Tightening the Penrose Inequality

The Penrose inequality estimates the lower bound of the mass of a black hole in terms of the area of its horizon. This bound is relatively loose for extremal or near extremal black holes. We propose a new Penrose-like inequality for static black holes involving the mass, area of the black hole event horizon and temperature. Our inequality includes the Penrose inequality as its corollary, and it is saturated by both the Schwarzschild and Reissner-Nordström black holes. In the spherically-symmetric case, we prove this new inequality by assuming both the null and trace energy conditions.

On the Lagrangian Holographic Relation at $D\rightarrow2$ and $4$ Limits of Gravity

The gravitational Lagrangian can be written as a summation of a bulk and a total derivative term. For some theories of gravity such as Einstein gravity, or more general Lovelock gravities, there are Lagrangian holographic relations between the bulk and the total derivative term such that the latter is fully determined by the former. However at the $D\rightarrow 2\&4$ limit, the bulks of Einstein or Gauss-Bonnet theories become themselves total derivatives. Performing the Kaluza-Klein reduction on Einstein and Gauss-Bonnet gravities gives rise to some two-dimensional or four-dimensional scalar-tensor theories respectively. We obtain the holographic relations for the $D = 2$ and $D = 4$ cases, which have the same form as the holographic relations in pure gravity in the foliation independent formalism.

Improved Wald formalism and First Law of Dyonic Black Strings with Mixed Chern-Simons Terms

We study the first law of thermodynamics of dyonic black strings carrying a linear momentum in type IIA string theory compactified on K3 with leading order $α'$ corrections. The low energy effective action contains mixed Chern-Simons terms of the form $-2B_{(2)}\wedge {\rm tr}(R(Γ_\pm)\wedge R(Γ_\pm))$ which is equivalent to $2H_{(3)}\wedge \mathrm{CS}_{(3)}(Γ_\pm)$ up to a total derivative. We find that the naive application of Wald entropy formula leads to two different answers associated with the two formulations of the mixed Chern-Simons terms. Surprisingly, neither of them satisfies the first law of thermodynamics for other conserved charges computed unambiguously using the standard methods. We resolve this problem by carefully evaluating the full infinitesimal Hamiltonian at both infinity and horizon, including contributions from terms proportional to the Killing vector which turn out to be nonvanishing on the horizon and indispensable to establish the first law. We find that the infinitesimal Hamiltionian associated with $-2B_{(2)}\wedge {\rm tr}(R(Γ_\pm)\wedge R(Γ_\pm))$ requires an improvement via adding a closed but non-exact term, which vanishes when the string does not carry either the magnetic charge or linear momentum. Consequently, both formulations of the mixed Chern-Simons terms yield the same result of the entropy that however does not agree with the Wald entropy formula. In the case of extremal black strings, we also contrast our result with the one obtained from Sen's approach.

Classical Holographic Relations and Alternative Boundary Conditions for Lovelock Gravity

We obtain the classical holographic relation for the general Lovelock gravity and decompose the full Lagrangian into the bulk term and the surface term, expressed as a total derivative $\partial_μJ^μ$. By classical holographic relation, we mean that $J^μ$ is determined completely by the bulk term. We find that the bulk term is not degenerate, or first-order in this foliation-independent approach. We then consider the Arnowitt-Deser-Misner (ADM) formalism where the foliation coordinate $w$ is treated as special. We obtain the classical holographic-degenerate relation with the first-order bulk term that does not involve higher than one derivative of $w$. For Einstein gravity, the two approaches lead to the same bulk term, but different ones for higher-order Lovelock gravities. The classical holographic-degenerate formulation in the ADM approach allows us to consider alternative boundary conditions in the variation principle with different Myers terms. We show in the semiclassical approximation that the black hole entropy in all cases is the same as the one obtained under the standard Dirichlet boundary condition. We also generalize the formalism to general $f(L_{\rm Lovelock}^{(k)})$-gravity.

Measurement of structure dependent radiative $K^{+} \rightarrow e^{+} νγ$ decays using stopped positive kaons

The structure dependent radiative $K^+ \rightarrow e^+ νγ$ ($K_{e2γ}^{\rm SD^+}$) decay was investigated with stopped positive kaons. The $e^+$ momentum spectra containing 574$\pm$30 $K_{e2γ}^{\rm SD^+}$ events with a $K^+ \rightarrow μ^+ ν$ ($K_{\mu2}$) background of 28$\pm$19 events were measured with and without a photon in coincidence and analyzed with Monte Carlo simulations for acceptance and detector response to extract the ratio of the branching ratio of the $K_{e2γ}^{\rm SD^+}$ decay and the $K^+ \rightarrow e^+ ν$ decay including the internal bremsstrahlung process ($K_{e2(γ)}$). A value of $Br(K_{e2γ}^{\rm SD^+}) / Br(K_{e2(γ)}) = 1.12\pm0.07_{\rm stat} \pm 0.04_{\rm syst}$ was obtained. This indicates a partial branching ratio, $Br(K_{e2γ}^{\rm SD^+}, ~{p_e>200~{\rm MeV}/c}, ~{E_γ>10~{\rm MeV}})/Br(K_{\mu2}) =(1.85 \pm 0.11_{\rm{stat}} \pm 0.07_{\rm{syst}}) \times10^{-5}$, which is $25\%(\sim$2.5$σ)$ higher than the previous experimental result.

Echoes from Classical Black Holes

We study echoes of free massless scalar from dyonic black holes in Einstein-Maxwell gravity extended with the quasi-topological electromagnetic term. These asymptotically-flat black holes all satisfy the dominant energy condition. We find that for suitable parameters, the effective potential can have double peaks and consequently echoes of quasinormal modes arise. In general the echo frequency associated with the initial wave packet released inside the two peaks is about twice the frequency of the one released outside.

The Design and Performance of Charged Particle Detector onboard the GECAM Mission

The Gravitational Wave highly energetic Electromagnetic Counterpart All-sky Monitor (GECAM) is dedicated to detecting gravitational wave gamma-ray bursts. It is capable of all-sky monitoring over and discovering gamma-ray bursts and new radiation phenomena. GECAM consists of two microsatellites, each equipped with 8 charged particle detectors (CPDs) and 25 gamma-ray detectors (GRDs). The CPD is used to measure charged particles in the space environment, monitor energy and flow intensity changes, and identify between gamma-ray bursts and space charged particle events in conjunction with GRD. CPD uses plastic scintillator as the sensitive material for detection, silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) array as the optically readable device, and the inlaid Am-241 radioactive source as the onboard calibration means. In this paper, we will present the working principle, physical design, functional implementation and preliminary performance test results of the CPD.

Quality assurance test and Failure Analysis of SiPM Arrays of GECAM Satellites

The Gravitational wave high-energy Electromagnetic Counterpart All-sky Monitor (GECAM) satellite consists of two small satellites. Each GECAM payload contains 25 gamma ray detectors (GRD) and 8 charged particle detectors (CPD). GRD is the main detector which can detect gamma-rays and particles and localize the Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRB),while CPD is used to help GRD to discriminate gamma-ray bursts and charged particle bursts. The GRD makes use of lanthanum bromide (LaBr3) crystal readout by SiPM. As the all available SiPM devices belong to commercial grade, quality assurance tests need to be performed in accordance with the aerospace specifications. In this paper, we present the results of quality assurance tests, especially a detailed mechanism analysis of failed devices during the development of GECAM. This paper also summarizes the application experience of commercial-grade SiPM devices in aerospace payloads, and provides suggestions for forthcoming SiPM space applications.

Inflight performance of the GECAM Gamma-ray and Charge particle Detectors

The GECAM mission consists of two identical microsatellites (GECAM-A and GECAM-B). Each satellite is equipped with 25 gamma-ray detectors (GRD) and 8 charged particle detectors (CPD). The main scientific objective of the GECAM mission is to detect gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) associated with the gravitational wave events produced by the merging of binary compact stars. After the launch on Dec. 10, 2020 , we carried out a series of on orbit tests. This paper introduces the test results of the GECAM-B satellite. According to the in-flight performance, the energy band for gamma-ray detection of GECAM-B is from about 7 keV to 3.5 MeV. GECAM-B can achieve prompt localization of GRBs. For the first time, GECAM-B realized a quasi-real-time transmission of trigger information using Beidou-3 RDSS. Keywords GECAM, gamma-ray burst, gravitational wave, GRD, CPD

Ground-based calibration and characterization of GRD of GECAM: 8-160 keV

As the main detector of the GECAM satellite, the calibration of the energy response and detection efficiency of the GRD detector is the main content of the ground-based calibration. The calibration goal requires the calibrated energy points to sample the full energy range (8 keV-2 MeV) as much as possible. The low energy band (8-160 keV) is calibrated with the X-ray beam, while the high energy band (>160 keV) with radioactive sources. This article mainly focuses on the calibration of the energy response and detection efficiency in the 8-160 keV with a refined measurement around the absorption edges of the lanthanum bromide crystal. The GRD performances for different crystal types, data acquisition modes, working modes, and incident positions are also analyzed in detail. We show that the calibration campaign is comprehensive, and the calibration results are generally consistent with simulations as expected.
