Universal bounds on the size of a black hole

For static black holes in Einstein gravity, if matter fields satisfy a few general conditions, we conjecture that three characteristic parameters about the spatial size of black holes, namely the outermost photon sphere area $A_{\mathrm{ph,out}}$, the corresponding shadow area $A_{\mathrm{sh,out}}$ and the horizon area $A_{\mathcal{H}}$ satisfy a series of universal inequalities $9A_{\mathcal{H}}/4\leq A_{\mathrm{ph,out}}\leq A_{\mathrm{sh,out}}/3\leq 36πM^2$, where $M$ is the ADM mass. We present a complete proof in the spherically symmetric case and some pieces of evidence to support it in general static cases. We also discuss the properties of the photon spheres in general static spacetimes and show that, similar to horizon, photon spheres are also conformal invariant structures of the spacetimes.

Horndeski Gravity as $D\rightarrow4$ Limit of Gauss-Bonnet

We propose a procedure for the $D\rightarrow 4$ limit of Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet (EGB) gravity that leads to a well defined action principle in four dimensions. Our construction is based on compactifying $D$-dimensional EGB gravity on a $(D-4)$-dimensional maximally symmetric space followed by redefining the Gauss-Bonnet coupling $α\rightarrow \fracα{D-4}$. The resulting model is a special scalar-tensor theory that belongs to the family of Horndeski gravity. Static black hole solutions in the scalar-tensor theory are investigated. Interestingly, the metric profile is independent of the curvature of the internal space and coincides with the $D\rightarrow 4$ limit of the usual EGB black hole with the unusual Gauss-Bonnet coupling $\fracα{D-4}$. The curvature information of the internal space is instead encoded in the profile of the extra scalar field. Our procedure can also be generalized to define further limits of the Gauss-Bonnet combination by compactifying the $D$-dimensional theory on a $(D-p)$-dimensional maximally symmetric space with $p\leq 3$. These lead to different $D\rightarrow 4$ limits of EGB gravity as well as its $D\rightarrow 2,3$ limits.

Spectroscopic Evidence for Charge Order Melting via Quantum Fluctuations in a Cuprate

Copper-oxide high TC superconductors possess a number of exotic orders co-existing with or proximal to superconductivity, whose quantum fluctuations may account for the unusual behaviors of the normal state, even affecting superconductivity. Yet, spectroscopic evidence about such quantum fluctuations remains elusive. Here, we reveal spectroscopic fingerprints for such fluctuations associated with a charge order (CO) in nearly optimally-doped Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d, using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS). In the superconducting state, while the quasi-elastic CO signal decreases with temperature, the interplay between CO fluctuations and bond-stretching phonons in the form of a Fano-like interference paradoxically increases, incompatible with expectations for competing orders. Invoking general principles, we argue that this behavior reflects the properties of a dissipative system near an order-disorder quantum critical point, where the dissipation varies with the opening of the pseudogap and superconducting gap at low temperatures, leading to the proliferation of quantum critical fluctuations which melt CO.

Black Hole Scalarization in Gauss-Bonnet Extended Starobinsky Gravity

We propose a class of higher-derivative gravities that can be viewed as the Gauss-Bonnet extension of the Starobinsky model. The theory admits the Minkowski spacetime vacuum whose linear spectrum consists of the graviton and a massive scalar mode. In addition to the usual Schwarzschild black hole, we use numerical analysis to establish that in some suitable mass range, new black holes carrying the massive scalar hair can emerge. The new black hole serves as a "wall" separating the naked spacetime singularity and wormholes in the parameter space of the scalar hair. Our numerical results also indicate that although the new hairy black hole and the Schwarzschild have different spacetime geometry, their entropy and temperature are same for the same mass.

Vacua and Exact Solutions in Lower-$D$ Limits of EGB

We consider the action principles that are the lower dimensional limits of the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity {\it via} the Kaluza-Klein route. We study the vacua and obtain some exact solutions. We find that the reality condition of the theories may select one vacuum over the other from the two vacua that typically arise in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity. We obtain exact black hole and cosmological solutions carrying scalar hair, including scalar hairy BTZ black holes with both mass and angular momentum turned on. We also discuss the holographic central charges in the asymptotic AdS backgrounds.

A modular apparatus for use in high-precision measurements of parity violation in polarized eV neutron transmission`

We describe a modular apparatus for use in parity-violation measurements in epithermal neutron-nucleus resonances with high instantaneous neutron fluxes at the Manuel Lujan Jr.\ Neutron Scattering Center at Los Alamos National Laboratory. This apparatus is designed to conduct high-precision measurements of the parity-odd transmission asymmetry of longitudinally polarized neutrons through targets containing nuclei with p-wave neutron-nucleus resonances in the 0.1-10 eV energy regime and to accommodate a future search for time reversal violation in polarized neutron transmission through polarized nuclear targets. The apparatus consists of an adjustable neutron and gamma collimation system, a \(^3\)He-$^{4}$He ion chamber neutron flux monitor, two identical cryostats for target cooling, an adiabatic eV-neutron spin flipper, a near-unit efficiency \(^6\)Li-\(^{7}\)Li scintillation detector operated in current mode, a flexible CAEN data acquisition system, and a neutron spin filter based on spin-exchange optical pumping of $^{3}$He gas. We describe the features of the apparatus design devoted to the suppression of systematic errors in parity-odd asymmetry measurements. We describe the configuration of the apparatus used to conduct a precision measurement of parity violation at the 0.7 eV p-wave resonance in $^{139}$La which employs two identical $^{139}$La targets, one to polarize the beam on the p-wave resonance using the weak interaction and one to analyze the polarization.

On the Size of Rotating Black Holes

Recently a sequence of inequalities relating the black hole horizon, photon sphere, shadow were proposed for spherically symmetric and static black holes, providing the upper bound for given mass. In this paper, we extend the discussion to include rotating black holes. When viewed from the north pole direction, the shadow remains a round disk, but the image is skewed when viewed from the equatorial plane. After properly implementing the ``size'' parameters for the rotating black holes, we verify that the sequence of inequalities remain valid for a variety of solutions, including Kerr, Kerr-Newman, Kerr-Sen and Kerr-Cveti\v c-Youm black holes. The upshot is that rotation makes both the actual and apparent sizes of a black hole smaller.

On the Size of a Black Hole: The Schwarzschild is the Biggest

We consider static black holes in Einstein gravity and study parameters characterizing the black hole size, namely the radii of the horizon $R_+$, photon sphere $R_{\rm ph}$ and black hole shadow $R_{\rm sh}$. We find a sequence of inequalities $\frac32 R_+\, \le\, R_{\rm ph}\, \le \,\frac{1}{\sqrt3} R_{\rm sh}\,\le\, 3 M$, where $M$ is the black hole mass. These are consistent with and beyond the previously known upper bounds in literature. The Schwarzschild black hole saturates all the inequalities, making it the biggest of all for given mass. The inequalities include an upper bound of entropy for any quantum system with given energy. We also point out that some black holes satisfying the dominant energy condition can trap photons to form a stable photon shield outside the event horizon, but the shadow hides it from an observer at infinity.

Holographic Complexity Bounds

We study the action growth rate in the Wheeler-DeWitt (WDW) patch for a variety of $D\ge 4$ black holes in Einstein gravity that are asymptotic to the anti-de Sitter spacetime, with spherical, toric and hyperbolic horizons, corresponding to the topological parameter $k=1,0,-1$ respectively. We find a lower bound inequality $\frac{1}{T} \frac{\partial \dot I_{\rm WDW}}{\partial S}|_{Q,P_{\rm th}}> C$ for $k=0,1$, where $C$ is some order-one numerical constant. The lowest number in our examples is $C=(D-3)/(D-2)$. We also find that the quantity $(\dot I_{\rm WDW}-2P_{\rm th}\, ΔV_{\rm th})$ is greater than, equal to, or less than zero, for $k=1,0,-1$ respectively. For black holes with two horizons, $ΔV_{\rm th}=V_{\rm th}^+-V_{\rm th}^-$, i.e. the difference between the thermodynamical volumes of the outer and inner horizons. For black holes with only one horizon, we introduce a new concept of the volume $V_{\rm th}^0$ of the black hole singularity, and define $ΔV_{\rm th}=V_{\rm th}^+-V_{\rm th}^0$. The volume $V_{\rm th}^0$ vanishes for the Schwarzschild black hole, but in general it can be positive, negative or even divergent. For black holes with single horizon, we find a relation between $\dot I_{\rm WDW}$ and $V_{\rm th}^0$, which implies that the holographic complexity preserves the Lloyd's bound for positive or vanishing $V_{\rm th}^0$, but the bound is violated when $V_{\rm th}^0$ becomes negative. We also find explicit black hole examples where $V_{\rm th}^0$ and hence $\dot I_{\rm WDW}$ are divergent.

Mechanisms of GaN quantum dot formation during nitridation of Ga droplets

We have examined the formation mechanisms of GaN quantum dots (QDs) via annealing of Ga droplets in a nitrogen flux. We consider the temperature and substrate dependence of the size distributions of droplets and QDs, as well as the relative roles of Ga/N diffusivity and GaN nucleation rates on QD formation. We report on two competing mechanisms mediated by Ga surface diffusion, namely QD formation at or away from pre-existing Ga droplets. We discuss the relative roles of nucleation and coarsening dominant growth, as well as the polytype selection, on various substrates. The new insights provide an opportunity for tailoring QD size and polytype distributions for a wide range of III-N semiconductor QDs.

High Precision Measurement of Compton Scattering in the 5 GeV region

The cross section of atomic electron Compton scattering $γ+ e \rightarrow γ^\prime + e^\prime $ was measured in the 4.40--5.475 GeV photon beam energy region by the {\em PrimEx} collaboration at Jefferson Lab with an accuracy of 2\% and less. The results are consistent with theoretical predictions that include next-to-leading order radiative corrections. The measurements provide the first high precision test of this elementary QED process at beam energies greater than 0.1 GeV.

Electronic structure of the parent compound of superconducting infinite-layer nickelates

The search for oxide materials with physical properties similar to the cuprate high Tc superconductors, but based on alternative transition metals such as nickel, has grown and evolved over time. The recent discovery of superconductivity in doped infinite-layer nickelates RNiO2 (R = rare-earth element) further strengthens these efforts. With a crystal structure similar to the infinite-layer cuprates - transition metal oxide layers separated by a rare-earth spacer layer - formal valence counting suggests that these materials have monovalent Ni1+ cations with the same 3d electron count as Cu2+ in the cuprates. Here, we use x-ray spectroscopy in concert with density functional theory to show that the electronic structure of RNiO2 (R = La, Nd), while similar to the cuprates, includes significant distinctions. Unlike cuprates with insulating spacer layers between the CuO2 planes, the rare-earth spacer layer in the infinite-layer nickelate supports a weakly-interacting three-dimensional 5d metallic state. This three-dimensional metallic state hybridizes with a quasi-two-dimensional, strongly correlated state with 3dx2-y2 symmetry in the NiO2 layers. Thus, the infinite-layer nickelate can be regarded as a sibling of the rare earth intermetallics, well-known for heavy Fermion behavior, where the NiO2 correlated layers play an analogous role to the 4f states in rare-earth heavy Fermion compounds. This unique Kondo- or Anderson-lattice-like "oxide-intermetallic" replaces the Mott insulator as the reference state from which superconductivity emerges upon doping.

Quasi-topological Electromagnetism: Dark Energy, Dyonic Black Holes, Stable Photon Spheres and Hidden Electromagnetic Duality

We introduce the quasi-topological electromagnetism which is defined to be the squared norm of the topological 4-form $F\wedge F$. A salient property is that its energy-momentum tensor is of the isotropic perfect fluid with the pressure being precisely the opposite to its energy density. It can thus provide a model for dark energy. We study its application in both black hole physics and cosmology. The quasi-topological term has no effect on the purely electric or magnetic Reissner-Nordström black holes, the dyonic solution is however completely modified. We find that the dyonic black holes can have four real horizons. For suitable parameters, the black hole can admit as many as three photon spheres, with one being stable. Another intriguing property is that although the quasi-topological term breaks the electromagnetic duality, the symmetry emerges in the on-shell action in the Wheeler-DeWitt patch. In cosmology, we demonstrate that the quasi-topological term alone is equivalent to a cosmological constant, but the model provides a mechanism for the dark energy to couple with other types of matter. We present a concrete example of the quasi-topological electromagnetism coupled to a scalar field that admits the standard FLRW cosmological solutions.

Holographic OPE Coefficients from AdS Black Holes with Matters

We study the OPE coefficients $c_{Δ, J}$ for heavy-light scalar four-point functions, which can be obtained holographically from the two-point function of a light scalar of some non-integer conformal dimension $Δ_L$ in an AdS black hole. We verify that the OPE coefficient $c_{d,0}=0$ for pure gravity black holes, consistent with the tracelessness of the holographic energy-momentum tensor. We then study the OPE coefficients from black holes involving matter fields. We first consider general charged AdS black holes and we give some explicit low-lying examples of the OPE coefficients. We also obtain the recursion formula for the lowest-twist OPE coefficients with at most two current operators. For integer $Δ_L$, although the OPE coefficients are not fully determined, we set up a framework to read off the coefficients $γ_{Δ,J}$ of the $\log(z\bar{z})$ terms that are associated with the anomalous dimensions of the exchange operators and obtain a general formula for $γ_{Δ,J}$. We then consider charged AdS black holes in gauged supergravity STU models in $D=5$ and $D=7$, and their higher-dimensional generalizations. The scalar fields in the STU models are conformally massless, dual to light operators with $Δ_L=d-2$. We derive the linear perturbation of such a scalar in the STU charged AdS black holes and obtain the explicit OPE coefficient $c_{d-2,0}$. Finally, we analyse the asymptotic properties of scalar hairy AdS black holes and show how $c_{d,0}$ can be nonzero with exchanging scalar operators in these backgrounds.

First Detection of Photons with Energy Beyond 100 TeV from an Astrophysical Source

We report on the highest energy photons from the Crab Nebula observed by the Tibet air shower array with the underground water-Cherenkov-type muon detector array. Based on the criterion of muon number measured in an air shower, we successfully suppress 99.92% of the cosmic-ray background events with energies $E>100$ TeV. As a result, we observed 24 photon-like events with $E>100$ TeV against 5.5 background events, which corresponds to 5.6$σ$ statistical significance. This is the first detection of photons with $E>100$ TeV from an astrophysical source.

Action Growth of Dyonic Black Holes and Electromagnetic Duality

Electromagnetic duality of Maxwell theory is a symmetry of equations but not of the action. The usual application of the `complexity=action' conjecture would thus loose this duality. It was recently proposed in arxiv:1901.00014 that the duality can be restored by adding some appropriate boundary term, at the price of introducing the mixed boundary condition in the variation principle. We present universal such a term in both first-order and second-order formalism for a general theory of a minimally-coupled Maxwell field. The first-order formalism has the advantage that the variation principle involves only the Dirichlet boundary condition. Including this term, we compute the on-shell actions in the Wheeler-De Witt patch and find that the duality persists in these actions for a variety of theories, including Einstein-Maxwell, Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton, Einstein-Born-Infeld and Einstein-Horndeski-Maxwell theories.

Holographic (a,c)-charges and Their Universal Relation in d=6 from Massless Higher-order Gravities

Recent studies of holographic properties of massless higher-order gravities, whose linear spectrum contains only the (massless) graviton, yielded some universal relations in $d=4$ dimensions between the holographic $a$, $c$ charges and the overall coefficient factor ${\cal C}_T$ of the energy-momentum tensor two-point function, namely $c=\frac{1}{d-1} \ell\frac{\partial a}{\partial \ell}={\cal C}_T$, where $\ell$ is the AdS radius. The second equality was shown to be valid in all dimensions. In this paper, we establish the first equality in $d=6$ by examining these quantities from $D=7$ higher-order gravities. Consequently the overall coefficient of the two-point function of the energy-momentum tensor is proportional to this $c$ charge, generalizing the well-known $d=4$ result. We identify the relevant $c$ charge as the coefficient of a specific combination of the three type-B anomalies. Modulo total derivatives, this combination involves Riemann tensor at most linearly.
