The design and performance of GRD onboard the GECAM satellite

Background: Each GECAM satellite payload contains 25 gamma-ray detectors (GRDs), which can detect gamma-rays and particles and can roughly localize the Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs). GRD was designed using lanthanum bromide (LaBr3) crystal as the sensitive material with the rear end coupled with silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) array for readout. Purpose: In aerospace engineering design of GRD, there are many key points to be studied. In this paper, we present the specific design scheme of GRD, the assembly and the performance test results of detectors. Methods: Based on Monte Carlo simulation and experimental test results, the specific schematic design and assembling process ofGRDwere optimized. After being fully assembled, theGRDswere conducted performance tests by using radioactive source and also conducted random vibration tests. Result and conclusion: The test results show that all satellite-borne GRDs have energy resolution <16% at 59.5 keV, meeting requirements of satellite in scientific performance. The random vibration test shows that GRD can maintain in a stable performance, which meets the requirement of spatial application.

The study of active geomagnetic shielding coils system for JUNO

The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is a large liquid scintillator (LS) detector for neutrino mass ordering and other neutrino physics research. The detector uses large-size $20$ inches photomultiplier tubes to detect photons from a liquid scintillator. The large PMTs are sensitive and easily affected such that the detection efficiency loses about 60$\%$ under the geomagnetic field intensity ($\sim$500 mG). It has a significantly negative effect on the detector performance, and a compensation system is necessary for geomagnetic field shielding. As permalloys are easily rusted in water, a better way for the geomagnetic shielding is to apply an active compensation coils system. The simulations show that a set of 32 circular coils can meet the experiment requirement. The residual magnetic field is less than 0.05 G in the Central Detector Photomultiplier Tube (CD-PMT) region (38.5-39.5 m in diameter). A prototype coil system with a 1.2 m was built to validate the simulation and the design. The measured data of prototype and simulation results are consistent with each other, and geomagnetic field intensity is effectively reduced by coils, verifying the shielding coils system design for JUNO. This study is expected to provide practical guidance for the PMT magnetic field shielding for future large-scale detector designs.

Hidden Relations of Central Charges and OPEs in Holographic CFT

It is known that the $(a,c)$ central charges in four-dimensional CFTs are linear combinations of the three independent OPE coefficients of the stress-tensor three-point function. In this paper, we adopt the holographic approach using AdS gravity as an effect field theory and consider higher-order corrections up to and including the cubic Riemann tensor invariants. We derive the holographic central charges and OPE coefficients and show that they are invariant under the metric field redefinition. We further discover a hidden relation among the OPE coefficients that two of them can be expressed in terms of the third using differential operators, which are the unit radial vector and the Laplacian of a four-dimensional hyperbolic space whose radial variable is an appropriate length parameter that is invariant under the field redefinition. Furthermore, we prove that the consequential relation $c=1/3 \ell_{\rm eff}\partial a/\partial\ell_{\rm eff}$ and its higher-dimensional generalization are valid for massless AdS gravity constructed from the most general Riemann tensor invariants.

Superradiant Instability of Extremal Black Holes in STU Supergravity

We investigate the superradiant (in)stability of the extremal multi-charge static black holes in the STU supergravity model, which reduce to the RN black hole when all the charges are equal. We first show that the frequency of quasi-bound states is necessarily complex and obtain the corresponding superradiant condition. We then study the effective potential of the Schrödinger-like equation associated with the radial function of the charged scalar field. We find that trapping-well configurations can emerge with either a single peak or double peaks. We numerically obtain the corresponding unstable quasi-bound states, organized under the overtone number, as well as how the charged black holes deviate from the RN black hole. We find that the STU black holes are superradiantly unstable as long as not all the charges are equal, indicating that the superradiant stability of the extremal RN black hole is a fine-tuning result in the framework of the STU supergravity model.

In-plane quasi-single-domain BaTiO$_3$ via interfacial symmetry engineering

The control of the in-plane domain evolution in ferroelectric thin films is not only critical to understanding ferroelectric phenomena but also to enabling functional device fabrication. However, in-plane polarized ferroelectric thin films typically exhibit complicated multi-domain states, not desirable for optoelectronic device performance. Here we report a strategy combining interfacial symmetry engineering and anisotropic strain to design single-domain, in-plane polarized ferroelectric BaTiO$_3$ thin films. Theoretical calculations predict the key role of the BaTiO$_3$ / PrScO$_3$ (110)$_O$ substrate interfacial environment, where anisotropic strain, monoclinic distortions, and interfacial electrostatic potential stabilize a single-variant spontaneous polarization. A combination of scanning transmission electron microscopy, piezoresponse force microscopy, ferroelectric hysteresis loop measurements, and second harmonic generation measurements directly reveals the stabilization of the in-plane quasi-single-domain polarization state. This work offers design principles for engineering in-plane domains of ferroelectric oxide thin films, which is a prerequisite for high performance optoelectronic devices.

Potential PeVatron supernova remnant G106.3+2.7 seen in the highest-energy gamma rays

Cosmic rays (protons and other atomic nuclei) are believed to gain energies of petaelectronvolts (PeV) and beyond at astrophysical particle accelerators called 'PeVatrons' inside our Galaxy. Although a characteristic feature of a PeVatron is expected to be a hard gamma-ray energy spectrum that extends beyond 100 teraelectronvolts (TeV) without a cutoff, none of the currently known sources exhibits such a spectrum due to the low maximum energy of accelerated cosmic rays or insufficient detector sensitivity around 100 TeV. Here we report the observation of gamma-ray emission from the supernova remnant G106.3+2.7 above 10 TeV. This work provides flux data points up to and above 100 TeV and indicates that the very-high-energy gamma-ray emission above 10 TeV is well correlated with a molecular cloud rather than the pulsar PSR J2229+6114. Regarding the gamma-ray emission mechanism of G106.3+2.7, this morphological feature appears to favor a hadronic origin via the π0 decay caused by accelerated relativistic protons over a leptonic one via the inverse-Compton scattering by relativistic electrons. Furthermore, we point out that an X-ray flux upper limit on the synchrotron spectrum would provide important information to firmly establish the hadronic scenario as the mechanism of particle acceleration at the source.

Degenerate Black Rings in $D=5$ Minimal Supergravity

We consider both gauged and ungauged minimal supergravities in five dimensions and analyse the charged rotating solutions with two equal angular momenta $J$. When the electric charge $Q\sim J^{2/3}$ with some specific coefficient, we find new extremal black objects emerge that are asymptotic to either Minkowski or global AdS spacetimes and can be best described as degenerate black rings. Their near-horizon geometry is locally AdS$_3\times S^2$, where the periodic $U(1)$ fibre coordinate in $S^3$ untwists and collapses to be the degenerate part of the AdS$_3$ horizon. It turns out that there are two branches of extremal rotating black holes, starting as the extremal RN black holes of the same mass, but opposite charges. With the increasing of the angular momentum, they will join to become the same degenerate black ring, where the Gibbs free energies however are not continuous at the joining. For the same $Q(J)$ relation, we find that there is in addition a rotating soliton whose mass is smaller than the degenerate black ring.

Gamma-ray Observation of the Cygnus Region in the 100 TeV Energy Region

We report observations of gamma-ray emissions with energies in the 100 TeV energy region from the Cygnus region in our Galaxy. Two sources are significantly detected in the directions of the Cygnus OB1 and OB2 associations. Based on their positional coincidences, we associate one with a pulsar PSR J2032+4127 and the other mainly with a pulsar wind nebula PWN G75.2+0.1 with the pulsar moving away from its original birthplace situated around the centroid of the observed gamma-ray emission. This work would stimulate further studies of particle acceleration mechanisms at these gamma-ray sources.

Magnetic excitations in infinite-layer nickelates

The discovery of superconductivity in infinite-layer nickelates brings us tantalizingly close to a new material class that mirrors the cuprate superconductors. Here, we report on magnetic excitations in these nickelates, measured using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) at the Ni L3-edge, to shed light on the material complexity and microscopic physics. Undoped NdNiO2 possesses a branch of dispersive excitations with a bandwidth of approximately 200 meV, reminiscent of strongly-coupled, antiferromagnetically aligned spins on a square lattice, despite a lack of evidence for long range magnetic order. The significant damping of these modes indicates the importance of coupling to rare-earth itinerant electrons. Upon doping, the spectral weight and energy decrease slightly, while the modes become overdamped. Our results highlight the role of Mottness in infinite-layer nickelates.

First Detection of sub-PeV Diffuse Gamma Rays from the Galactic Disk: Evidence for Ubiquitous Galactic Cosmic Rays beyond PeV Energies

We report, for the first time, the long-awaited detection of diffuse gamma rays with energies between 100 TeV and 1 PeV in the Galactic disk. Particularly, all gamma rays above 398 TeV are observed apart from known TeV gamma-ray sources and compatible with expectations from the hadronic emission scenario in which gamma rays originate from the decay of $π^0$'s produced through the interaction of protons with the interstellar medium in the Galaxy. This is strong evidence that cosmic rays are accelerated beyond PeV energies in our Galaxy and spread over the Galactic disk.

A Note on Kerr/CFT and Wald Entropy Discrepancy in High Derivative Gravities

We examine the Kerr/CFT correspondence in Einstein gravity extended with quadratic curvature invariants. We consider two explicit examples in four and five dimensions and compute the central charges of the asymptotic symmetry algebras of the near horizon geometries, using the improved version of the BBC formalism that encompasses the information of the Lagrangian. We find that the resulting Cardy entropy differs from the Wald entropy, caused by the Riemann-squared $R^{μνρσ}R_{μνρσ}$ term.

A Correspondence between Ricci-flat Kerr and Kaluza-Klein AdS Black Hole

We establish an explicit correspondence of Einstein gravity on the squashed spheres that are the $U(1)$ bundles over $\mathbb{CP}^m$ to the Kaluza-Klein AdS gravity on the tori. This allows us to map the Ricci-flat Kerr metrics in odd dimensions with all equal angular momenta to charged Kaluza-Klein AdS black holes that can be lifted to become singly rotating M-branes and D3-branes. Furthermore, we find maps between Ricci-flat gravitational instantons to the AdS domain walls. In particular the supersymmetric bolt instantons correspond to domain walls that can be interpreted as distributed M-branes and D3-branes, whilst the non-supersymmetric Taub-NUT solutions yield new domain walls that can be lifted to become solutions in M-theory or type IIB supergravity. The correspondence also inspires us to obtain a new superpotential in the Kaluza-Klein AdS gravity in four dimensions.

Large-Charge Limit of AdS Boson Stars with Mixed Boundary Conditions

It was recently shown that charged AdS boson stars can reproduce the universal structure of the lowest scaling dimension in the subsector of a CFT with fixed large global $U(1)$ charge $Q$. Using the model consisting of Einstein-Maxwell gravity with a negative cosmological constant, coupled to a $U(1)$-charged conformally massless scalar with the fourth-order self interaction, we construct a class of charged AdS boson star solutions in the large $Q$ limit, where the scalar field obeys a mixed boundary condition, parameterized by $k$ that interpolates between the Neumann and Dirichlet boundary conditions corresponding to $k=0$ and $\infty$ respectively. By varying $k$, we numerically read off the $k$ dependence of the leading coefficient $c_{3/2}(k) \equiv \lim_{Q\rightarrow \infty} M/Q^{3/2}$. We find that $c_{3/2}(k)$ is a monotonously increasing function which grows linearly when $k$ is sufficiently small. When $k\rightarrow \infty$, $c_{3/2}(k)$ approaches the maximal value at a decreasing rate given by $k^{-3/2}$ . We also obtain a close form expression that fits the numerical data for the entire range of $k$ within $10^{-4}$ accuracy.

Magnetic order and disorder in a quasi-two-dimensional quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet with randomized exchange

We present an investigation of the effect of randomizing exchange strengths in the $S=1/2$ square lattice quasi-two-dimensional quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet (QuinH)$_2$Cu(Cl$_{x}$Br$_{1-x}$)$_{4}\cdot$2H$_2$O (QuinH$=$Quinolinium, C$_9$H$_8$N$^+$), with $0\leq x \leq 1$. Pulsed-field magnetization measurements allow us to estimate an effective in-plane exchange strength $J$ in a regime where exchange fosters short-range order, while the temperature $T_{\mathrm{N}}$ at which long range order (LRO) occurs is found using muon-spin relaxation, allowing us to construct a phase diagram for the series. We evaluate the effectiveness of disorder in suppressing $T_{\mathrm{N}}$ and the ordered moment size and find an extended disordered phase in the region $0.4 \lesssim x \lesssim 0.8$ where no magnetic order occurs, driven by quantum effects of the exchange randomness.

Asymptotic structure of Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory in lower dimensions

Recently, an action principle for the $D\rightarrow4$ limit of the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity has been proposed. It is a special scalar-tensor theory that belongs to the family of Horndeski gravity. It also has a well defined $D\rightarrow3$ and $D\rightarrow2$ limit. In this work, we examine this theory in three and four dimensions in Bondi-Sachs framework. In both three and four dimensions, we find that there is no news function associated to the scalar field, which means that there is no scalar propagating degree of freedom in the theory. In four dimensions, the mass-loss formula is not affected by the Gauss-Bonnet term. This is consistent with the fact that there is no scalar radiation. However, the effects of the Gauss-Bonnet term are quite significant in the sense that they arise just one order after the integration constants and also arise in the quadrupole of the gravitational source.

Revisiting the AdS Boson Stars: the Mass-Charge Relations

Motivated by the recent progress in solving the large charge sector of conformal field theories, we revisit the mass-charge relation of boson stars asymptotic to global AdS. We construct and classify a large number of electrically charged boson star solutions in a toy model and two supergravity models arising from the $SU(3)$ and $U(1)^4$ truncation of $D=4$ $SO(8)$ gauged maximal supergravity. We find a simple ansatz for the chemical potential that can fit the numerical data in striking accuracy for the full range of charge. Combining with the first law of thermodynamics, we can then evaluate the mass as a function of the charge and obtain the free energy in the fixed charge ensemble. We show that in the toy model, the ground state can be either the extremal RN black hole or the boson stars depending on the parameter region. For the $SU(3)$ truncation, there always exists a boson star that has smaller free energy than the extremal RN black hole, in contrast to the $U(1)^4$ model where the extremal RN black hole is always the ground state. In all models, for boson star solutions with arbitrarily large charge, we show that the large charge expansion of the mass reproduces the same structure exhibited in the CFT side.

Cosmological Time Crystals From Einstein-Cubic Gravities

By including appropriate Riemman cubic invariants, we find that the dynamics of classical time crystals can be straightforwardly realized in Einstein gravity on the FLRW metric. The time reflection symmetry is spontaneously broken in the two vacua with the same scale factor $a$, but opposite $\dot a$. The tunneling from one vacuum to the other provides a robust mechanism for bounce universes; it always occurs for systems with positive energy density. For suitable matter energy-momentum tensor we also construct cyclic universes. Cosmological solutions that resemble the classical time crystals can be constructed in massive gravity.

Orbital and Spin Character of Doped Carriers in Infinite-Layer Nickelates

The recent discovery of superconductivity in Nd$_{1-x}$Sr$_{x}$NiO$_2$ has drawn significant attention in the field. A key open question regards the evolution of the electronic structure with respect to hole doping. Here, we exploit x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) to probe the doping dependent electronic structure of the NiO$_2$ planes. Upon doping, a higher energy feature in Ni $L_3$ edge XAS develops in addition to the main absorption peak. By comparing our data to atomic multiplet calculations including $D_{4h}$ crystal field, the doping induced feature is consistent with a $d^8$ spin singlet state, in which doped holes reside in the $d_{x^2-y^2}$ orbitals, similar to doped single band Hubbard models. This is further supported by orbital excitations observed in RIXS spectra, which soften upon doping, corroborating with Fermi level shift associated with increasing holes in the $d_{x^2-y^2}$ orbital.
