NOvA Dual-Baseline Search for Active-to-Sterile Neutrino Oscillations using Neutrino- and Antineutrino-Enriched Samples

We report a search for neutrino oscillations to sterile neutrinos in the NOvA detectors under a model with three active and one sterile neutrinos. This search simultaneously fits data in the two NOvA detectors and is the first from NOvA to use both neutrino- and antineutrino-mode beams, with exposures of $26.61\times10^{20}$ and $12.50\times10^{20}$ protons on target, respectively. There is no evidence for sterile neutrinos in the data and we are able to exclude regions of parameter space that were allowed by previous experiments, including most of the allowed region reported by IceCube.

Search for Accelerator-Produced Sub-GeV Dark Matter with the NOvA Near Detector

The NuMI facility at Fermilab produces a high-intensity beam of muon neutrinos and antineutrinos, designed to study neutrino oscillations. This beam may also be a source of dark matter particles produced through a light mediator. We search for dark matter particles with masses between 1 and 200 MeV that interact with Standard Model particles via a vector portal, producing forward-scattered single-electron events in the NOvA near detector. We set limits on the dark-visible coupling based on an exposure of 2.55x10^21 protons of 120 GeV energy on the NuMI target. For the dark matter mass range 10-20 MeV, this analysis sets the tightest constraints on the coupling to date.

Measurements of Gravitational Attractions at small Accelerations

Gravitational interactions were studied by measuring the influence of small external field masses on a microwave resonator. It consisted of two spherical mirrors, which acted as independent pendulumsindividually suspended by strings. Two identical field masses weremoved along the axis of the resonator symmetrically and periodically betweena near and a far position. Their gravitational interaction altered the distance between the mirrors, changing the resonance frequency, which was measured and found consistent with Newton's law of gravity. The acceleration of a single mirror caused by the two field masses at the closest position varied from $5.4 \cdot 10^{-12} m/s^2$ to $259 \cdot 10^{-12}\ m/s^2$.

Flat-top plasma operational space of the STEP power plant

STEP is a spherical tokamak prototype power plant that is being designed to demonstrate net electric power. The design phase involves the exploitation of plasma models to optimise fusion performance subject to satisfying various physics and engineering constraints. A modelling workflow, including integrated core plasma modelling, MHD stability analysis, SOL and pedestal modelling, coil set and free boundary equilibrium solvers, and whole plant design, has been developed to specify the design parameters and to develop viable scenarios. The integrated core plasma model JETTO is used to develop individual flat-top operating points that satisfy imposed criteria for fusion power performance within operational constraints. Key plasma parameters such as normalised beta, Greenwald density fraction, auxiliary power and radiated power have been scanned to scope the operational space and to derive a collection of candidate non-inductive flat-top points. The assumed auxiliary heating and current drive is either from electron cyclotron systems only or a combination of electron cyclotron and electron Bernstein waves. At present stages of transport modelling, there is a large uncertainty in overall confinement for relevant parameter regimes. For each of the two auxiliary heating and current drive systems scenarios, two candidate flat-top points have been developed based on different confinement assumptions, totalling to four operating points. A lower confinement assumption generally suggests operating points in high-density, high auxiliary power regimes, whereas higher confinement would allow access to a broader parameter regime in density and power while maintaining target fusion power performance.

Concept for a Space-based Near-Solar Neutrino Detector

The concept of putting a neutrino detector in close orbit of the sun has been unexplored until very recently. The primary scientific return is to vastly enhance our understanding of the solar interior, which is a major NASA goal. Preliminary calculations show that such a spacecraft, if properly shielded, can operate in space environments while taking data from neutrino interactions. These interactions can be distinguished from random background rates of solar electromagnetic emissions, galactic charged cosmic-rays, and gamma-rays by using a double pulsed signature. Early simulations of this project have shown this veto schema to be successful in eliminating background and identifying the neutrino interaction signal in upwards of 75% of gamma ray interactions and nearly 100% of other interactions. Hence, we propose a new instrument to explore and study our sun. Due to inverse square scaling, this instrument has the potential to outperform earth-based experiments in several domains such as making measurements not accessible from the earth's orbit.

Neutron Interferometry Using a Single Modulated Phase Grating

Neutron grating interferometry provides information on phase and small-angle scatter in addition to attenuation. Previously, phase grating moiré interferometers (PGMI) with two- or three-phase gratings have been developed. These phase-grating systems use the moiré far-field technique to avoid the need for high-aspect absorption gratings used in Talbot-Lau interferometers (TLI) which reduce the neutron flux reaching the detector. We first demonstrate through theory and simulations a novel phase grating interferometer system for cold neutrons that requires a single modulated phase grating (MPG) for phase-contrast imaging, as opposed to the two- or three-phase gratings in previously employed PGMI systems. The MPG theory was compared to the full Sommerfeld-Rayleigh Diffraction integral simulator. Then we compared the MPG system to experiments in the literature that use a two-phase-grating-based PGMI with best-case visibility of around 39%. An MPG with a modulation period of 300 micron, pitch of 2 micron, and grating heights with a phase modulation of (pi,0), illuminated by a monochromatic beam, produces a visibility of 94.2% with comparable source-to-detector distance (SDD) as the two-phase-grating-based PGMI. Phase sensitivity, another important performance metric of the grating interferometer, was compared to values available in the literature, viz. the conventional TLI with phase sensitivity of 4.5 x 10E+3 for an SDD of 3.5 m and a beam wavelength of 0.44 nm. For a range of modulation periods, the MPG system provides comparable or greater theoretical maximum phase sensitivity of 4.1 x 10E+3 to 10.0 x 10E+3 for SDDs of up to 3.5 m. This proposed MPG system can provide high-performance PGMI that obviates the need to align two phase gratings.

Marginally compact hyperbranched polymer trees

Assuming Gaussian chain statistics along the chain contour, we generate by means of a proper fractal generator hyperbranched polymer trees which are marginally compact. Static and dynamical properties, such as the radial intrachain pair density distribution or the shear-stress relaxation modulus, are investigated theoretically and by means of computer simulations. We emphasize that albeit the self-contact density diverges logarithmically with the total mass $N$, this effect becomes rapidly irrelevant with increasing spacer length $S$. In addition to this it is seen that the standard Rouse analysis must necessarily become inappropriate for compact objects for which the relaxation time $τ_p$ of mode $p$ must scale as $τ_p \sim (N/p)^{5/3}$ rather than the usual square power law for linear chains.

Numerical determination of shear stress relaxation modulus of polymer glasses

Focusing on simulated polymer glasses well below the glass transition, we confirm the validity and the efficiency of the recently proposed simple-average expression $G(t) = μ_A - h(t)$ for the computational determination of the shear stress relaxation modulus $G(t)$. Here, $μ_A = G(0)$ characterizes the affine shear transformation of the system at $t=0$ and $h(t)$ the mean-square displacement of the instantaneous shear stress as a function of time $t$. This relation is seen to be particulary useful for systems with quenched or sluggish transient shear stresses which necessarily arise below the glass transition. The commonly accepted relation $G(t)=c(t)$ using the shear stress auto-correlation function $c(t)$ becomes incorrect in this limit.

A quasi-continuous exhaust scenario for a fusion reactor: the renaissance of small edge localized modes

Tokamak operational regimes with small edge localized modes (ELMs) could be a solution to the problem of large transient heat loads in future fusion reactors because they provide quasi-continuous exhaust while keeping a good plasma confinement. A ballooning mode mechanism near the last closed flux surface (LCFS) governed by an interplay of the pressure gradient and the magnetic shear there has been proposed for small ELMs in high density ASDEX Upgrade and TCV discharges. In this manuscript we explore different factors relevant for plasma edge stability in a wide range of edge safety factors by changing the connection length between the good and the bad curvature side. Simultaneously this influences the stabilizing effect of the local magnetic shear close to the LCFS as well as the $E \times B$ flow shear. Ideal ballooning stability calculations with the HELENA code reveal that small ELM plasmas are indeed unstable against ballooning modes very close to the LCFS but can exhibit second ballooning stability in the steep gradient region which correlates with enhanced confinement. We also present first non-linear simulations of small ELM regimes with the JOREK code including the $E \times B$ shear which indeed develop ballooning like fluctuations in the high triangularity limit. In the region where the small ELMs originate the dimensionless parameters are very similar in our investigated discharges and in a reactor, making this regime the ideal exhaust scenario for a future reactor.

Determination of the strong coupling constant $α_s(M_Z)$ in next-to-next-to-leading order QCD using H1 jet cross section measurements

The strong coupling constant $α_s(M_Z)$ is determined from inclusive jet and dijet cross sections in neutral-current deep-inelastic $ep$ scattering (DIS) measured at HERA by the H1 collaboration using next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD predictions. The dependence of the NNLO predictions and of the resulting value of $α_s(M_Z)$ at the $Z$-boson mass $m_Z$ are studied as a function of the choice of the renormalisation and factorisation scales. Using inclusive jet and dijet data together, the strong coupling constant is determined to be $α_s(M_Z)=0.1166\,(19)_{\rm exp}\,(24)_{\rm th}$. Complementary, $α_s(M_Z)$ is determined together with parton distribution functions of the proton (PDFs) from jet and inclusive DIS data measured by the H1 experiment. The value $α_s(M_Z)=0.1147\,(25)_{\rm tot}$ obtained is consistent with the determination from jet data alone. The impact of the jet data on the PDFs is studied. The running of the strong coupling is tested at different values of the renormalisation scale and the results are found to be in agreement with expectations.

Shear-stress fluctuations in free-standing polymer films

Using molecular dynamics simulation of a polymer glass model we investigate free-standing polymer films focusing on the in-plane shear modulus $μ$ and the corresponding shear-stress relaxation modulus $G(t)$ as functions of temperature $T$, film thickness $H$ (tuned by means of the lateral box size $L$) and sampling time $Δt$. Various observables are seen to vary linearly with $1/H$ demonstrating thus the (to leading order) linear superposition of bulk and surface properties. In agreement with recent studies on three-dimensional polymer glass-formers, $μ$ and $G(t)$ are found to decrease continuously with $T$. A jump-singularity is not observed. Confirming the time-translational invariance of our systems, the $Δt$-dependence of $μ$ is traced back to $G(t)$.

New constraints on oscillation parameters from $ν_e$ appearance and $ν_μ$ disappearance in the NOvA experiment

We present updated results from the NOvA experiment for $ν_μ\rightarrowν_μ$ and $ν_μ\rightarrowν_e$ oscillations from an exposure of $8.85\times10^{20}$ protons on target, which represents an increase of 46% compared to our previous publication. The results utilize significant improvements in both the simulations and analysis of the data. A joint fit to the data for $ν_μ$ disappearance and $ν_e$ appearance gives the best fit point as normal mass hierarchy, $Δm^2_{32} = 2.44\times 10^{-3}{{\rm eV}^2}/c^4$, $\sin^2θ_{23} = 0.56$, and $δ_{CP} = 1.21π$. The 68.3% confidence intervals in the normal mass hierarchy are $Δm^2_{32} \in [2.37,2.52]\times 10^{-3}{{\rm eV}^2}/c^4$, $\sin^2θ_{23} \in [0.43,0.51] \cup [0.52,0.60]$, and $δ_{CP} \in [0,0.12π] \cup [0.91π,2π]$. The inverted mass hierarchy is disfavored at the 95% confidence level for all choices of the other oscillation parameters.

Experimental conditions to suppress edge localised modes by magnetic perturbations in the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak

Access conditions for full suppression of Edge Localised Modes (ELMs) by Magnetic Perturbations (MP) in low density high confinement mode (H-mode) plasmas are studied in the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak. The main empirical requirements for full ELM suppression in our experiments are: 1. The poloidal spectrum of the MP must be aligned for best plasma response from weakly stable kink-modes, which amplify the perturbation, 2. The plasma edge density must be below a critical value, $3.3 \times 10^{19}$~m$^{-3}$. The edge collisionality is in the range $ν^*_i = 0.15-0.42$ (ions) and $ν^*_e = 0.15-0.25$ (electrons). However, our data does not show that the edge collisionality is the critical parameter that governs access to ELM suppression. 3. The pedestal pressure must be kept sufficiently low to avoid destabilisation of small ELMs. This requirement implies a systematic reduction of pedestal pressure of typically 30\% compared to unmitigated ELMy H-mode in otherwise similar plasmas. 4. The edge safety factor $q_{95}$ lies within a certain window. Within the range probed so far, $q_{95}=3.5-4.2$, one such window, $q_{95}=3.57-3.95$ has been identified. Within the range of plasma rotation encountered so far, no apparent threshold of plasma rotation for ELM suppression is found. This includes cases with large cross field electron flow in the entire pedestal region, for which two-fluid MHD models predict that the resistive plasma response to the applied MP is shielded.

Shear-stress fluctuations and relaxation in polymer glasses

We investigate by means of molecular dynamics simulation a coarse-grained polymer glass model focusing on (quasi-static and dynamical) shear-stress fluctuations as a function of temperature T and sampling time $Δt$. The linear response is characterized using (ensemble-averaged) expectation values of the contributions (time-averaged for each shear plane) to the stress-fluctuation relation $μ_{sf}$ for the shear modulus and the shear-stress relaxation modulus $G(t)$. Using 100 independent configurations we pay attention to the respective standard deviations. While the ensemble-averaged modulus $μ_{sf}(T)$ decreases continuously with increasing T for all $Δt$ sampled, its standard deviation $δμ_{sf}(T)$ is non-monotonous with a striking peak at the glass transition. The question of whether the shear modulus is continuous or has a jump-singularity at the glass transition is thus ill-posed. Confirming the effective time-translational invariance of our systems, the $Δt$-dependence of $μ_{sf}$ and related quantities can be understood using a weighted integral over $G(t)$. This implies that the shear viscosity $η(T)$ may be readily obtained from the $1/Δt$-decay of $μ_{sf}$ above the glass transition.

Shear modulus and shear-stress fluctuations in polymer glasses

Using molecular dynamics simulation of a standard coarse-grained polymer glass model we investigate by means of the stress-fluctuation formalism the shear modulus $μ$ as a function of temperature $T$ and sampling time $Δt$. While the ensemble-averaged modulus $μ(T)$ is found to decrease continuously for all $Δt$ sampled, its standard deviation $δμ(T)$ is non-monotonous with a striking peak at the glass transition. Confirming the effective time-translational invariance of our systems, $μ(Δt)$ can be understood using a weighted integral over the shear-stress relaxation modulus $G(t)$. While the crossover of $μ(T)$ gets sharper with increasing $Δt$, the peak of $δμ(T)$ becomes more singular. % It is thus elusive to predict the modulus of a single configuration at the glass transition.

Constraints on Oscillation Parameters from $ν_e$ Appearance and $ν_μ$ Disappearance in NOvA

Results are reported from an improved measurement of $ν_μ\rightarrow ν_e$ transitions by the NOvA experiment. Using an exposure equivalent to $6.05\times10^{20}$ protons-on-target 33 $ν_e$ candidates were observed with a background of $8.2\pm0.8$ (syst.). Combined with the latest NOvA $ν_μ$ disappearance data and external constraints from reactor experiments on $\sin^22θ_{13}$, the hypothesis of inverted mass hierarchy with $θ_{23}$ in the lower octant is disfavored at greater than $93\%$ C.L. for all values of $δ_{CP}$.

Measurement of the neutrino mixing angle $θ_{23}$ in NOvA

This Letter reports new results on muon neutrino disappearance from NOvA, using a 14 kton detector equivalent exposure of $6.05\times10^{20}$ protons-on-target from the NuMI beam at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. The measurement probes the muon-tau symmetry hypothesis that requires maximal mixing ($θ_{23} = π/4$). Assuming the normal mass hierarchy, we find $Δm^2 = (2.67 \pm 0.11)\times 10^{-3}$ eV$^2$ and $\sin^2 θ_{23}$ at the two statistically degenerate values $0.404^{+0.030}_{-0.022}$ and $0.624^{+0.022}_{-0.030}$, both at the 68% confidence level. Our data disfavor the maximal mixing scenario with 2.6 $σ$ significance.

Measurement of high-k density fluctuation wavenumber spectrum in MAST and Doppler backscattering for spherical tokamaks

The high-k ($7 \lesssim k_{\bot} ρ_i \lesssim 11$) wavenumber spectrum of density fluctuations has been measured for the first time in MAST [B. Lloyd et al, Nucl. Fusion 43, 1665 (2003)]. This was accomplished with the first implementation of Doppler backscattering (DBS) for core measurements in a spherical tokamak. DBS has become a well-established and versatile diagnostic technique for the measurement of intermediate-k ($k_{\bot} ρ_i \sim 1$, and higher) density fluctuations and flows in magnetically confined fusion experiments. A novel implementation with 2D steering was necessary to enable DBS measurements in MAST, where the large magnetic field pitch angle presents a challenge. We report on the scattering considerations and ray tracing calculations used to optimize the design and present data demonstrating measurement capabilities. Initial results confirm the applicability of the design and implementation approaches, showing the strong dependence of scattering alignment on toroidal launch angle. We also present comparisons of DBS plasma velocity measurements with charge exchange recombination and beam emission spectroscopy measurements, which show reasonable agreement over most of the minor radius, but imply large poloidal flows approaching the magnetic axis in a discharge with an internal transport barrier. The 2D steering is shown to enable high-k measurements with DBS, at $k_{\bot}>20\ \mathrm{cm}^{-1}$ ($k_{\bot} ρ_i>10$) for launch frequencies less than 75 GHz; this capability is used to measure the wavenumber spectrum of turbulence and we find $|n(k_{\bot})|^2 \propto k_{\bot}^{- 4.7 \pm 0.2}$ for $k_{\bot} ρ_i \approx 7-11$, which is similar to the expectation for the turbulent kinetic cascade of $|n(k_{\bot})|^2 \propto k_{\bot}^{- 13/3}$.
