Can we constrain the origin of Mars' recurring slope lineae using atmospheric observations?

Flowing water and brine have been proposed to cause seasonally reappearing dark streaks called recurring slope lineae (RSL) on steep warm slopes on Mars, along with other formation mechanisms that do not involve water. This study aims to examine whether the evaporation of water vapor from the RSL, whether from fresh water or brine, is detectable by observing water vapor and/or clouds. In this study, we summarize the possible rate and duration of water-vapor emission from RSL in different scenarios, simulate how the emitted water vapor behaves in a global climate model, and discuss the detectability of water vapor in nadir observations during existing and future explorations. We found that, in typical cases, rapid horizontal dissipation within the planetary boundary layer (PBL) following the release of water vapor prohibits cloud formation and the excess water vapor from being distinguished from the background with existing observations. Thus, we conclude that the lack of correlation between the RSL activities and the overlying water-vapor column density does not necessarily rule out the wet origin of RSL. Nevertheless, we also found that water vapor tends to accumulate in basins and valleys in some cases due to the combined effects of topography and low PBL; we suggest the locations of such configuration as targets for future atmospheric studies of Mars dedicated to quantifying water-vapor release (associated with RSL) to elucidate the formation mechanism(s) of the RSL on the planet.

Mars' atmospheric neon suggests volatile-rich primitive mantle

Martian atmospheric neon (Ne) has been detected by Viking and also found as trapped gas in Martian meteorites, though its abundance and isotopic composition have not been well determined. Because the timescale of Ne loss via atmospheric escape estimated from recent measurements with MAVEN is short (0.6--1 $\times$ 10$^8$ years), the abundance and isotope composition of Martian atmospheric Ne reflect recent atmospheric gas supply mostly from volcanic degassing. Thus, it can serve as a probe for the volatile content of the interior. Here we show that the tentatively-informed atmospheric Ne abundance suggests recent active volcanism and the mantle being richer in Ne than Earth's mantle today by more than a factor of 5--80. The estimated mantle Ne abundance requires efficient solar nebular gas capture or accretion of Ne-rich materials such as solar-wind-implanted dust in the planet formation stage, both of which provide important constraints on the abundance of other volatile elements in the interior and the accretion history of Mars. More precise determination of atmospheric Ne abundance and isotopic composition by in situ analysis or Mars sample return is crucial for distinguishing the possible origins of Ne.

Photogenerated Carriers in SrTiO3 Probed by Mid-Infrared Absorption

Infrared absorption spectra of SrTiO$_3$ have been measured under above-band-gap photoexcitations to study the properties of photogenerated carriers, which should play important roles in previously reported photoinduced phenomena in SrTiO$_3$. A broad absorption band appears over the entire mid-infrared region under photoexcitation. Detailed energy, temperature, and excitation power dependences of the photoinduced absorption are reported. This photo-induced absorption is attributed to the intragap excitations of the photogenerated carriers. The data show the existence of a high density of in-gap states for the photocarriers, which extends over a wide energy range starting from the conduction and valence band edges.

Collective Dynamics of Active Elements: Task Allocation and Pheromone Trailing

Collective behavior of active elements inspired by mass of biological organisms is addressed. Especially, two topics are focused on among amazing behaviors performed by colony of ants. First, task allocation phenomena are treated from the viewpoint of proportion regulation of population between different states. Using a dynamical model consisting of elements and external ``stock materials'', adaptability against various disturbances is numerically studied. In addition, a dynamical model for a colony ants interacting via two kind of pheromones is studied, in which simulated ants, as a mass, are shown to make an efficient foraging flexibly varying the foraging tactics according to feeding schedules. Finally, experiments are performed with robots moving in virtual pheromone fields simulated by CG and CCD camera feedback system. Trail formation processes are demonstrated by this multi-robot system.

Implementation of the Epics Device Support for Network-Based Controllers

In the control system of the JAERI-KEK joint project (High Intensity Proton Accelerator Facility), it is planned to employ network-based controllers such as PLC's and measurement stations instead of using other field control networks, since the network hardware and software can be standardized and they have been successfully utilized in other accelerator control systems in KEK. EPICS software support for those controllers was designed paying special attention to robustness and has been implemented and applied for the accelerator test stand. Basic functionalities were confirmed and miscellaneous functions such as diagnosis of the software itself would be added. Since many kinds of network-based equipment such as oscilloscopes have become available recently, they are considered to be integrated as well. They may enable more manageable controllers.

A Control System of the Joint-Project Accelerator Complex

The current status of the control system for a new high intensity proton accelerator, the JAERI-KEK Joint Project, is presented. The Phase 1 of the Joint-Project has been approved and recently started its construction at JAERI site at Tokai. The first beam commissioning is scheduled in 2006. In parallel with it, a 60-MeV Linac is now being constructed at KEK site at Tsukuba for R&D purpose. Recently the Project has officially decided to use the Experimental Physics and Industrial Control System (EPICS). Under the EPICS environment, we are challenging to implement the Ethernet/IP network for all communication, even at the level of end-point controllers which are so far connected via a field bus. In order to realize such a system, three new controllers (PLCs, WE7000 stations and general-purpose Ethernet boards) are being developed. A prototype EPICS driver for the PLCs works fine and is used to control the ion-source at the KEK Linac.

Experimental determination of B-T phase diagram of YBa_2Cu_3O_7-d to 150T for B perpendicular to c

The B-T phase diagram for thin film YBa_2Cu_3O_7-d with B parallel to the superconducting layers has been constructed from GHz transport measurements to 150T. Evidence for a transition from a high T regime dominated by orbital effects, to a low T regime where paramagnetic limiting drives the quenching of superconductivity, is seen. Up to 110T the upper critical field is found to be linear in T and in remarkable agreement with extrapolation of the longstanding result of Welp et al arising from magnetisation measurements to 6T. Beyond this a departure from linear behaviour occurs at T=74K, where a 3D-2D crossover is expected to occur.
