White Paper on Light Sterile Neutrino Searches and Related Phenomenology

This white paper provides a comprehensive review of our present understanding of experimental neutrino anomalies that remain unresolved, charting the progress achieved over the last decade at the experimental and phenomenological level, and sets the stage for future programmatic prospects in addressing those anomalies. It is purposed to serve as a guiding and motivational "encyclopedic" reference, with emphasis on needs and options for future exploration that may lead to the ultimate resolution of the anomalies. We see the main experimental, analysis, and theory-driven thrusts that will be essential to achieving this goal being: 1) Cover all anomaly sectors -- given the unresolved nature of all four canonical anomalies, it is imperative to support all pillars of a diverse experimental portfolio, source, reactor, decay-at-rest, decay-in-flight, and other methods/sources, to provide complementary probes of and increased precision for new physics explanations; 2) Pursue diverse signatures -- it is imperative that experiments make design and analysis choices that maximize sensitivity to as broad an array of these potential new physics signatures as possible; 3) Deepen theoretical engagement -- priority in the theory community should be placed on development of standard and beyond standard models relevant to all four short-baseline anomalies and the development of tools for efficient tests of these models with existing and future experimental datasets; 4) Openly share data -- Fluid communication between the experimental and theory communities will be required, which implies that both experimental data releases and theoretical calculations should be publicly available; and 5) Apply robust analysis techniques -- Appropriate statistical treatment is crucial to assess the compatibility of data sets within the context of any given model.

Leptoquark patterns unifying neutrino masses, flavor anomalies, and the diphoton excess

Vector leptoquarks provide an elegant solution to a series of anomalies and at the same time generate naturally light neutrino masses through their mixing with the standard model Higgs boson. We present a simple Froggatt-Nielsen model to accommodate the B physics anomalies $R_K$ and $R_D$, neutrino masses, and the $750$ GeV diphoton excess in one cohesive framework adding only two vector leptoquarks and two singlet scalar fields to the standard model field content.

Lepton masses and mixings in a $A_{4}$ multi-Higgs model with radiative seesaw mechanism

We propose a renormalizable multi-Higgs model with $A_{4}\otimes Z_{2}\otimes Z^{\prime}_{2}$ symmetry, accounting for the experimental deviation from the tribimaximal mixing pattern of the neutrino mixing matrix. In this framework we study the charged lepton and neutrino masses and mixings. The light neutrino masses are generated via a radiative seesaw mechanism, which involves a single heavy Majorana neutrino and neutral scalars running in the loops. The obtained neutrino mixings and mass squared splittings are in good agreement with the neutrino oscillation experimental data for both normal and inverted hierarchy. The model predicts an effective Majorana neutrino mass $m_{ββ}=$ 4 meV and 50 meV for the normal and the inverted neutrino spectrum, respectively. The model also features a suppression of CP violation in neutrino oscillations, a low scale for the heavy Majorana neutrino (few TeV) and, due to the unbroken $Z_2$ symmetry, a natural dark matter candidate.

Short-range mechanisms of neutrinoless double beta decay at the LHC

Lepton number violation (LNV) mediated by short range operators can manifest itself in both neutrinoless double beta decay and in processes with same sign dilepton final states at the LHC. We derive limits from existing LHC data at $\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV and compare the discovery potential of the forthcoming $\sqrt{s}=14$ TeV phase of the LHC with the sensitivity of current and future neutrinoless double beta decay experiments, assuming the short-range part of the decay amplitude dominates. We focus on the first of two possible topologies triggered by one fermion and two bosons in the intermediate state. In all cases, except for the pure leptoquark mechanism, the LHC will be more sensitive than neutrinoless double beta decay in the future. In addition, we propose to search for a charge asymmetry in the final state leptons and to use different invariant mass peaks as a possibility to discriminate the various possible mechanisms for LNV signals at the LHC.

A model of superluminal neutrinos

Motivated by the tentative observation of superluminal neutrinos by the OPERA experiment, we present a model of active-sterile neutrino oscillations in which sterile neutrinos are superluminal and active neutrinos appear superluminal by virtue of neutrino mixing. The model demonstrates some interesting possibilities and challenges that apply to a large class of models aiming to explain the OPERA result.

LHC and B physics probes of neutrinoless double beta decay in supersymmetry without R-parity

In the event of an observation of neutrinoless double beta decay, a relevant question would be: what lepton number violating physics is responsible for the decay? The exchange of Majorana neutrinos and/or supersymmetric particles may contribute. We point out that measurements of supersymmetric signals at the LHC, including single slepton production, could be used to help bound some supersymmetric processes contributing to neutrinoless double beta decay. LHC information about the supersymmetric spectrum could be combined with Bd-Bd bar mixing data in order to bound a competing neutrinoless double beta decay process involving sbottom exchange.

Large Hadron Collider probe of supersymmetric neutrinoless double beta decay mechanism

In the minimal supersymmetric extension to the Standard Model, a non-zero lepton number violating coupling lambda'_111 predicts both neutrinoless double beta decay and resonant single slepton production at the LHC. We show that, in this case, if neutrinoless double beta decay is discovered in the next generation of experiments, there exist good prospects to observe single slepton production at the LHC. Neutrinoless double beta decay could otherwise result from a different source (such as a non-zero Majorana neutrino mass). Resonant single slepton production at the LHC can therefore discriminate between the lambda'_111 neutrinoless double beta decay mechanism and others.

Pinning down the mechanism of neutrinoless double beta decay with measurements in different nuclei

A measurement of neutrinoless double beta decay in one isotope does not allow to determine the underlying physics mechanism. We discuss the discrimination of mechanisms for neutrinoless double beta decay by comparing ratios of half life measurements for different isotopes. Six prominent examples for specific new physics contributions to neutrinoless double beta decay are analyzed. We find that the change in corresponding ratios of half lives varies from 60% for supersymmetric models up to a factor of 5-20 for extra-dimensional and left-right-symmetric mechanisms.

Constraints on SUSY Seesaw Parameters from Leptogenesis and Lepton Flavor Violation

We study the constraints on a minimal supersymmetric seesaw model imposed by neutrino data, charged lepton flavor violation, thermal leptogenesis and perturbativity. We show that it is possible to constrain the three heavy Majorana neutrino masses as well as the complex Yukawa coupling matrix. Our results provide a first step towards a seesaw benchmark model for further phenomenological studies and model building.

Slepton Flavor Violation

If the seesaw mechanism is implemented in supersymmetric theories the heavy neutrinos generate corrections to the slepton mass matrices which enhance the rates of charged lepton flavor violating processes. Here we study lepton flavor violating slepton pair production and decay at a future e+e- linear collider in mSUGRA post-LEP benchmark scenarios. We present the results of a background simulation and investigate the correlations of the collider signals with the corresponding radiative lepton decays.

Lepton flavor violation in the SUSY seesaw model: an update

We present an update of previous work on charged lepton flavor violation (LFV) in the seesaw model. The most recent neutrino data fits and post WMAP mSUGRA benchmark scenarios are used as input. In this framework we compare the sensitivity of rare radiative decays on the right-handed Majorana mass scale M_R with the reach in slepton-pair production at a future linear collider.

The SUSY seesaw model and lepton-flavor violation at a future electron-positron linear collider

We study lepton-flavor violating slepton production and decay at a future e^+e^- linear collider in context with the seesaw mechanism in mSUGRA post-LEP benchmark scenarios. The present knowledge in the neutrino sector as well as improved future measurements are taken into account. We calculate the signal cross-sections σ(e^{+/-}e^- -> l_β^{+/-} l_α^- \tildeχ_b^0 \tildeχ_a^0); l_δ=e, μ, τ; α=|= βand estimate the main background processes. Furthermore, we investigate the correlations of these signals with the corresponding lepton-flavor violating rare decays l_α -> l_β γ. It is shown that these correlations are relatively weakly affected by uncertainties in the neutrino data, but very sensitive to the model parameters. Hence, they are particularly suited for probing the origin of lepton-flavor violation.

Double beta decay and the extra-dimensional seesaw mechanism

We study the model-building conditions under which an observable 0vBB decay signal is predicted due to Kaluza-Klein singlet neutrinos in theories with large extra dimensions. Our analysis is based on 5-dimensional singlet-neutrino models compactified on an S^1/Z_2 orbifold, where the Standard-Model fields are localized on a 3-brane. We show that sizeable 0vBB rates within the above minimal 5-dimensional framework would require a non-vanishing shift of the 3-brane from the orbifold fixed points by an amount smaller than the typical scale 100 inverse MeV characterizing the Fermi nuclear momentum. The resulting 5-dimensional models predict a sizeable effective Majorana-neutrino mass that could be several orders of magnitude larger than the light neutrino masses.

Supersymmetric Lepton Flavour Violation at the LHC and LC

In supersymmetric extensions of the Standard Model, the Yukawa and/or mass terms of the heavy neutrinos can generate lepton flavour violating slepton mass terms. These new supersymmetric sources of lepton flavour violation may both enhance the rates of charged lepton flavour violating processes, l_a -> l_b y, and generate distinct final states, like l_b l_a + jets + missing E_T, at future colliders. First, we discuss the sensitivity of future e^+e^- colliders to the SLFV independently of the lepton flavour violating mechanism. Second, we study lepton flavour violating slepton pair production and decay at a future e^+e^- linear collider in the context of the seesaw mechanism in mSUGRA post-LEP benchmark scenarios. We investigate the correlations of these signals with the corresponding lepton flavour violating rare decays l_a -> l_b y, and show that these correlations are particularly suited for probing the origin of lepton flavour violation.

Particle physics implications of the WMAP neutrino mass bound

The recently published cosmological bound on the absolute neutrino masses obtained from the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) data has important consequences for neutrino experiments and models. Taken at face value, the new bound excludes the determination of the absolute neutrino mass in the KATRIN experiment and disfavors a neutrino oscillation interpretation of the LSND experiment. Combined with the KamLAND and Super-K data, the WMAP bound defines an accessible range for the neutrinoless double beta decay amplitude. The bound also impacts the Z-burst annihilation mechanism for resonant generation of extreme-energy cosmic rays on the cosmic neutrino background in two ways: it constrains the local overdensity of neutrino dark matter which is not helpful, but it also limits the resonant energy to a favorable range. In R-parity violating SUSY models neutrino masses are generated by trilinear and bilinear lepton number violating couplings. The WMAP result improves the constraints on these couplings over their existing values by an order of magnitude.

The hidden sterile neutrino and the (2+2) sum rule

We discuss oscillations of atmospheric and solar neutrinos into sterile neutrinos in the 2+2 scheme. A zeroth order sum rule requires equal probabilities for oscillation into nu_s and nu_tau in the solar+atmospheric data sample. Data does not favor this claim. Here we use scatter plots to assess corrections of the zeroth order sum rule when (i) the 4 x 4 neutrino mixing matrix assumes its full range of allowed values, and (ii) matter effects are included. We also introduce a related "product rule". We find that the sum rule is significantly relaxed, due to both the inclusion of the small mixing angles (which provide a short-baseline contribution) and to matter effects. The product rule is also dramatically altered. The observed relaxation of the sum rule weakens the case against the 2+2 model and the sterile neutrino. To invalidate the 2+2 model, a global fit to data with the small mixing angles included seems to be required.

Probing the Majorana mass scale of right-handed neutrinos in mSUGRA

We discuss the perspectives of testing the right-handed Majorana mass scale M_R of the SUSY see-saw model in the mSUGRA framework. Lepton-flavor violating low energy processes are analyzed in recently proposed post-LEP benchmark scenarios, taking into account present uncertainties and future developments in the neutrino sector. Nonobservation of mu -> e gamma in the next-generation PSI experiment will provide upper bounds on M_R of the order of 10^(12-14) GeV, while on the other hand, a positive signal for tau -> mu gamma at SUPERKEKB or the LHC may determine M_R for a given mSUGRA scenario with an accuracy of a factor of 2.
