Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay from Singlet Neutrinos in Extra Dimensions

We study the model-building conditions under which a sizeable $0νββ$-decay signal to the recently reported level of~0.4 eV is due to Kaluza--Klein singlet neutrinos in theories with large extra dimensions. Our analysis is based on 5-dimensional singlet-neutrino models compactified on an $S^1/Z_2$ orbifold, where the Standard--Model fields are localized on a 3-brane. We show that a successful interpretation of a positive signal within the above minimal 5-dimensional framework would require a non-vanishing shift of the 3-brane from the orbifold fixed points by an amount smaller than the typical scale (100 MeV)$^{-1}$ characterizing the Fermi nuclear momentum. The resulting 5-dimensional models predict a sizeable effective Majorana-neutrino mass that could be several orders of magnitude larger than the light neutrino masses. Most interestingly, the brane-shifted models with only one bulk sterile neutrino also predict novel trigonometric textures leading to mass scenarios with hierarchical active neutrinos and large $ν_μ$-$ν_τ$ and $ν_e$-$ν_μ$ mixings that can fully explain the current atmospheric and solar neutrino data.

Neutrino Oscillations, SUSY See-Saw Mechanism and Charged Lepton Flavor Violation

Neutrino oscillations give clear evidence for non-vanishing neutrino masses and lepton-flavor violation (LFV) in the neutrino sector. This provides strong motivation to search for signals of LFV also in the charged lepton sector, and to probe the SUSY see-saw mechanism. We compare the sensitivity of rare radiative decays on the right-handed Majorana mass scale M_R with the reach in slepton-pair production at a future linear collider.

LFV Constraints on the Majorana Mass Scale in mSUGRA

We discuss constraints on the right-handed Majorana mass scale M_R of the SUSY see-saw model in the mSUGRA framework. The sensitivity of radiative lepton-flavor violating decays on M_R is compared with the reach in lepton-flavor violating channels at a future linear collider.

Muon anomalous magnetic moment in string inspired extended family models

We propose a standard model minimal extension with two lepton weak SU(2) doublets and a scalar singlet to explain the deviation of the measured anomalous magnetic moment of the muon from the standard model expectation. This scheme can be naturally motivated in string inspired models such as E_6 and AdS/CFT.

Generalized Bounds on Majoron-neutrino couplings

We discuss limits on neutrino-Majoron couplings both from laboratory experiments as well as from astrophysics. They apply to the simplest class of Majoron models which covers a variety of possibilities where neutrinos acquire mass either via a seesaw-type scheme or via radiative corrections. By adopting a general framework including CP phases we generalize bounds obtained previously. The combination of complementary bounds enables us to obtain a highly non-trivial exclusion region in the parameter space. We find that the future double beta project GENIUS, together with constraints based on supernova energy release arguments, could restrict neutrino-Majoron couplings down to the 10^{-7} level.

Absolute Neutrino Mass Determination

We discuss four approaches to the determination of absolute neutrino mass. These are the measurement of the zero-neutrino double beta decay rate, of the tritium decay end-point spectrum, of the cosmic ray spectrum above the GZK cutoff (in the Z-burst model), and the cosmological measurement of the power spectrum governing the CMB and large scale structure. The first two approaches are sensitive to the mass eigenstates coupling to the electron neutrino, whereas the latter two are sensitive to the heavy component of the cosmic neutrino background. All mass eigenstates are related by the $Δm^2$'s inferred from neutrino oscillation data. Consequently, the potential for absolute mass determination of each of the four approaches is correlated with the other three, in ways that we point out.

Neutrino mass spectrum and neutrinoless double beta decay

The relations between the effective Majorana mass of the electron neutrino, $m_{ee}$, responsible for neutrinoless double beta decay, and the neutrino oscillation parameters are considered. We show that for any specific oscillation pattern $m_{ee}$ can take any value (from zero to the existing upper bound) for normal mass hierarchy and it can have a minimum for inverse hierarchy. This means that oscillation experiments cannot fix in general $m_{ee}$. Mass ranges for $m_{ee}$ can be predicted in terms of oscillation parameters with additional assumptions about the level of degeneracy and the type of hierarchy of the neutrino mass spectrum. These predictions for $m_{ee}$ are systematically studied in the specific schemes of neutrino mass and flavor which explain the solar and atmospheric neutrino data. The contributions from individual mass eigenstates in terms of oscillation parameters have been quantified. We study the dependence of $m_{ee}$ on the non-oscillation parameters: the overall scale of the neutrino mass and the relative mass phases. We analyze how forthcoming oscillation experiments will improve the predictions for $m_{ee}$. On the basis of these studies we evaluate the discovery potential of future \znbb decay searches. The role \znbb decay searches will play in the reconstruction of the neutrino mass spectrum is clarified. The key scales of $m_{ee}$, which will lead to the discrimination among various schemes are: $m_{ee} \sim 0.1$ eV and $m_{ee} \sim 0.005$ eV.

A superformula for neutrinoless double beta decay II: The short range part

A general Lorentz-invariant parameterization for the short-range part of the 0vBB decay rate is derived. Combined with the long range part already published this general parameterization in terms of effective B-L violating couplings allows one to extract the 0vBB limits on arbitrary lepton number violating theories.

Confronting Dilaton-exchange gravity with experiments

We study the experimental constraints on theories, where the equivalence principle is violated by dilaton-exchange contributions to the usual graviton-exchange gravity. We point out that in this case it is not possible to have any CPT violation and hence there is no constraint from the CPT violating measurements in the $K-$system. The most stringent bound is obtained from the $K_L - K_S$ mass difference. In contrast, neither neutrino oscillation experiments nor neutrinoless double beta decay imply significant constraints.

On nuclear matrix element uncertainties in short range 0vBB decay

The evaluation of short range contributions to neutrinoless double beta decay has been challenged due to critics of the ansatz of the nuclear matrix element calculations. We comment on the critics and uncertainties of these calculations and the effect on the derived limits.

Effects of quantum space time foam in the neutrino sector

We discuss violations of CPT and quantum mechanics due to interactions of neutrinos with space-time quantum foam. Neutrinoless double beta decay and oscillations of neutrinos from astrophysical sources (supernovae, active galactic nuclei) are analysed. It is found that the propagation distance is the crucial quantity entering any bounds on EHNS parameters. Thus, while the bounds from neutrinoless double beta decay are not significant, the data of the supernova 1987a imply a bound being several orders of magnitude more stringent than the ones known from the literature. Even more stringent limits may be obtained from the investigation of neutrino oscillations from active galactic nuclei sources, which have an impressive potential for the search of quantum foam interactions in the neutrino sector.

Comment on ``Closing the neutrinoless double beta decay window into VEP and/or VLI''

The constraints from the non-observation of neutrinoless double beta decay on the violations of Lorentz invariance (VLI) or violations of the equivalence principle (VEP) have recently been re-examined (hep-ph/9904298) and it was claimed that the constraints are not valid. In this reply we point out that this statement is not correct and prove that the arguments given are wrong.

New exotics in the double beta decay contributions zoo

We discuss the potential of neutrinoless double beta decay for testing Lorentz invariance and the weak equivalence principle as well as contributions from dilaton exchange gravity in the neutrino sector. While neutrino oscillation bounds constrain the region of large mixing of the weak and gravitational eigenstates, we obtain new constraints on violations of Lorentz invariance and the equivalence principle from neutrinoless double beta decay, applying even in the case of no mixing. Double beta decay thus probes a totally unconstrained region in the parameter space.

Effects of New Gravitational Interactions on Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay

It has recently been proposed that violations of Lorentz invariance or violations of the equivalence principle can be constrained from the non-observation of neutrinoless double beta decay. We generalize this analysis to all possible new gravitational interactions and discuss briefly the constraints for different cases.

Neutrinoless double beta decay and new physics in the neutrino sector

Neutrinoless double beta decay belongs to the most sensitive tools for the search of new physics beyond the standard model. The recent half life limit of the Heidelberg-Moscow experiment implies restrictive bounds on the absolute mass scale in the neutrino sector. Possible improvements by the GENIUS project provide a unique possibility to reconstruct the neutrino mass spectrum. Further constraints on new interactions in the neutrino sector are given in a model-independent way. Consequences for neutrino anomalies and theories beyond the standard model such as left-right symmetric models, R-parity violating SUSY and leptoquarks are discussed. The potential of double beta decay experiments in the search for WIMP dark matter is reviewed.

Towards a superformula for neutrinoless double beta decay

A general Lorentz--invariant parameterization for the long-range part of the $0νββ$ decay rate is derived. Combined with the short range part this general parameterization in terms of effective $B-L$ violating couplings will allow it to extract the $0νββ$ limits on arbitrary lepton number violating theories. Several new nuclear matrix elements appear in the general formalism compared to the standard neutrino mass mechanism. Some of these new matrix elements have never been considered before and are calculated within pn-QRPA. Using these, limits on lepton number violating parameters are derived from experimental data on $^{76}$Ge.

Improved bounds on SUSY accompanied neutrinoless double beta decay

Neutrinoless double beta decay induced by light Majorana neutrino exchange between two decaying nucleons with squark/slepton exchange inside one and W exchange inside the other nucleon (so-called vector-scalar exchange) gives stringent limits on R-parity violating interactions. We have extended previous work by including the tensor contribution to the transition rate. We discuss the improved limits on trilinear \Rp -MSSM couplings imposed by the current experimental limit on the $\znbb$ decay half-life of $^{76}$Ge.
