Discovery of an Antiferromagnetic Topological Nodal-line Kondo Semimetal

The symbiosis of strong interactions, flat bands, topology and symmetry has led to the discovery of exotic phases of matter, including fractional Chern insulators, correlated moiré topological superconductors, and Dirac and Weyl semimetals. Correlated metals, such as those present in Kondo lattices, rely on the screening of local moments by a sea of non-magnetic conduction electrons. Here, we report on a unique topological Kondo lattice compound, CeCo2P2, where the Kondo effect - whose existence under the magnetic Co phase is protected by PT symmetry - coexists with antiferromagnetic order emerging from the flat bands associated with the Co atoms. Remarkably, this is the only known Kondo lattice compound where magnetic order occurs in non-heavy electrons, and puzzlingly, at a temperature significantly higher than that of the Kondo effect. Furthermore, at low temperatures, the emergence of the Kondo effect, in conjunction with a glide-mirror-z symmetry, results in a nodal line protected by bulk topology near the Fermi energy. These unusual properties, arising from the interplay between itinerant and correlated electrons from different constituent elements, lead to novel quantum phases beyond the celebrated topological Kondo insulators and Weyl Kondo semimetals. CeCo2P2 thus provides an ideal platform for investigating narrow bands, topology, magnetism, and the Kondo effect in strongly correlated electron systems.

Inverse melting and intertwined orders in PrCuSb$_2$

Much of the rich physics of correlated systems is manifested in the diverse range of intertwined ordered phases and other quantum states that are associated with different electronic and structural degrees of freedom. Here we find that PrCuSb$_2$ exhibits such phenomena, which at ambient pressure exhibits a fragile antiferromagnetic order, where cooling in a small $c$ axis magnetic field leads to an additional transition to a field-induced ferromagnetic state. This corresponds to an 'inverse melting' effect, whereby further cooling the system restores symmetries of the paramagnetic state broken at the antiferromagnetic transition. Moreover, hydrostatic pressure induces an additional first-order transition at low temperatures, which despite being not likely associated with solely magnetic degrees of freedom, is closely entwined with the magnetic order, disappearing once antiferromagnetism is destroyed by pressure or magnetic fields. Consequently, PrCuSb$_2$ presents a distinct scenario for interplay between different orders, underscoring the breadth of such behaviors within one family of correlated materials.

Inelastic neutron scattering and muon spin relaxation investigations of the deuterated Kondo lattices CeNiSnD$ _x $

CeNiSn is a Kondo semimetal where a gap opens at low temperatures due to hybridization between 4$f$ and conduction electrons, but a full insulating state fails to develop. Upon the insertion of hydrogen, long range magnetic order is induced. Here we report zero-field muon-spin relaxation and inelastic neutron scattering measurements of polycrystalline samples of the deuterides CeNiSnD$_x$ ($x$=1.0, 1.8). The muon-spin relaxation results confirm magnetic ordering in the whole sample of CeNiSnD below around 4.7 K, while inelastic neutron scattering reveals two well-defined crystalline-electric field (CEF) excitations at around 13 meV and 34 meV in CeNiSnD, and 5 meV and 27 meV for CeNiSnD$_{1.8}$. These results suggest that hydrogenation leads to the localization of the Ce-4$f$ electrons, giving rise to long-range magnetic order. We propose CEF level schemes for both systems, which predict a ground state moment of 0.96$μ_{\rm B}$/Ce within the $ab$-plane for CeNiSnD$_{1.8}$ and a saturated moment of 1.26$μ_{\rm B}$/Ce along the easy $c$ axis for CeNiSnD, that account for the observed magnetic properties.

Magnetic properties of the layered heavy fermion antiferromagnet CePdGa$_6$

We report the magnetic properties of the layered heavy fermion antiferromagnet CePdGa$_{6}$, and their evolution upon tuning with the application of magnetic field and pressure. CePdGa$_{6}$ orders antiferromagnetically below $T\rm_{N}$ = 5.2 K, where there is evidence for heavy fermion behavior from an enhanced Sommerfeld coefficient. Our results are best explained by a magnetic ground state of ferromagnetically coupled layers of Ce $4f$-moments orientated along the $c$-axis, with antiferromagnetic coupling between layers. At low temperatures we observe two metamagnetic transitions for fields applied along the $c$-axis corresponding to spin-flip transitions, where the lower transition is to a different magnetic phase with a magnetization one-third of the saturated value. From our analysis of the magnetic susceptibility, we propose a CEF level scheme which accounts for the Ising anisotropy at low temperatures, and we find that the evolution of the magnetic ground state can be explained considering both antiferromagnetic exchange between nearest neighbor and next nearest neighbor layers, indicating the influence of long-range interactions. Meanwhile we find little change of $T\rm_{N}$ upon applying hydrostatic pressures up to 2.2 GPa, suggesting that significantly higher pressures are required to examine for possible quantum critical behaviors.

Nodeless superconductivity in noncentrosymmetric LaRhSn

The superconducting order parameter of the noncentrosymmetric superconductor LaRhSn is investigated by means of low temperature measurements of the specific heat, muon-spin relaxation/rotation ($μ$SR) and the tunnel-diode oscillator (TDO) based method. The specific heat and magnetic penetration depth [$λ(T)$] show an exponentially activated temperature dependence, demonstrating fully gapped superconductivity in LaRhSn. The temperature dependence of $λ^{-2}(T)$ deduced from the TDO based method and $μ$SR show nearly identical behavior, which can be well described by a single-gap $s$-wave model, with a zero temperature gap value of $Δ(0)=1.77(4)k_BT_c$. The zero-field $μ$SR spectra do not show detectable changes upon cooling below $T_c$, and therefore there is no evidence for time-reversal-symmetry breaking in the superconducting state.

Evidence of unconventional pairing in the quasi two-dimensional CuIr$_2$Te$_4$ superconductor

The CuIr$_{2-x}$Ru$_x$Te$_4$ superconductors (with a $T_c$ around 2.8 K) can host charge-density waves, whose onset and interplay with superconductivity are not well known at a microscopic level. Here, we report a comprehensive study of the $x$ = 0 and 0.05 cases, whose superconductivity was characterized via electrical-resistivity-, magnetization-, and heat-capacity measurements, while their microscopic superconducting properties were studied via muon-spin rotation and relaxation ($μ$SR). In CuIr$_{2-x}$Ru$_x$Te$_4$, both the temperature-dependent electronic specific heat and the superfluid density (determined via transverse-field $μ$SR) are best described by a two-gap (s+d)-wave model, comprising a nodeless gap and a gap with nodes. The multigap superconductivity is also supported by the temperature dependence of the upper critical field $H_\mathrm{c2}(T)$. However, under applied pressure, a charge-density-wave order starts to develop and, as a consequence, the superconductivity of CuIr$_2$Te$_4$ achieves a more conventional s-wave character. From a series of experiments, we provide ample evidence that the CuIr$_{2-x}$Ru$_x$Te$_4$ family belongs to the rare cases, where an unconventional superconducting pairing is found near a charge-density-wave quantum critical point.

Semimetallic Kondo lattice behavior in YbPdAs with a distorted kagome structure

We have synthesized YbPdAs with the hexagonal ZrNiAl-type structure, in which the Yb-atoms form a distorted kagome sublattice in the hexagonal basal plane. Magnetic, transport, and thermodynamic measurements indicate that YbPdAs is a low-carrier Kondo lattice compound with an antiferromagnetic transition at $T_\mathrm{N}$ = 6.6 K, which is slightly suppressed in applied magnetic fields up to 9 T. The magnetic entropy at $T_\mathrm{N}$ recovers only 33\% of $R\ln{2}$, the full entropy of the ground state doublet of the Yb-ions. The resistivity displays a $-\ln T$ dependence between 30 and 15 K, followed by a broad maximum at $T\rm_{coh}$ = 12 K upon cooling. Below $T\rm_{coh}$, the magnetoresistance changes from negative to positive, suggesting a crossover from single-ion Kondo scattering processes at intermediate temperatures to coherent Kondo lattice behaviors at low temperatures. Both the Hall resistivity measurements and band structure calculations indicate a relatively low carrier concentration in YbPdAs. Our results suggest that YbPdAs could provide an opportunity for examining the interplay of Kondo physics and magnetic frustration in low carrier systems.

CeCu$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ and YbRh$_{2}$Si$_{2}$: Strange Cases of Heavy-Fermion Superconductivity

The heavy-fermion superconductor CeCu$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ exhibits two-band, $d$-wave superconductivity with a finite energy gap over the whole Fermi surface around the magnetic instability where 4$f$ antiferrerromagnetic order is suppressed. In contrast, in YbRh$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ heavy-fermion superconductivity appears only when 4$f$-electronic antiferromagnetic order is replaced at ultra-low temperatures by a combined nuclear and 4$f$-spin order. Whereas both compounds exhibit different variants of antiferromagnetic instabilities, i.e., a spin-density-wave quantum critical point in CeCu$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ and one of "partial-Mott" type in YbRh$_{2}$Si$_{2}$, in both cases the Cooper pairing, as well as the pronounced "strange-metal" behavior in YbRh$_{2}$Si$_{2}$, appear to be driven by large-to-small Fermi surface fluctuations. The transport properties and scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) for these materials are dominated by single-ion Kondo scatterings down to very low temperatures. Further open problems of the Kondo lattice include both the interplay between superconductivity and antiferromagnetic order as well as the onset of lattice coherence. While microscopic coexistence of superconductivity and antiferromagnetism seems to require a sufficiently large staggered moment, the onset of lattice coherence in transport measurements and STS is associated solely with the crystal-field-doublet ground state, while it involves the fully degenerate Hund's rule multiplet in ARPES.

Evidence of fully-gapped superconductivity in NbReSi: A combined $μ$SR and NMR study

We report a comprehensive study of the noncentrosymmetric NbReSi superconductor by means of muon-spin rotation and relaxation ($μ$SR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques. NbReSi is a bulk superconductor with $T_c = 6.5$ K, characterized by a large upper critical field, which exceeds the Pauli limit. Both the superfluid density $ρ_\mathrm{sc}(T)$ (determined via transverse-field $μ$SR) and the spin-lattice relaxation rate $T_1^{-1}(T)$ (determined via NMR) suggest a nodeless superconductivity (SC) in NbReSi. We also find signatures of multigap SC, here evidenced by the field-dependent muon-spin relaxation rate and the electronic specific-heat coefficient. The absence of spontaneous magnetic fields below $T_c$, as evinced from zero-field $μ$SR measurements, indicates a preserved time-reversal symmetry in the superconducting state of NbReSi. Finally, we discuss possible reasons for the unusually large upper critical field of NbReSi, most likely arising from its anisotropic crystal structure.

Suppression of ferromagnetism and influence of disorder in silicon-substituted CeRh6Ge4

We report a study of isoelectronic chemical substitution in the recently discovered quantum critical ferromagnet CeRh$_6$Ge$_4$. Upon silicon-doping, the ferromagnetic ordering temperature of CeRh$_6$(Ge$_{1-x}$Si$_x$)$_4$ is continuously suppressed, and no transition is observed beyond $x_c$$\approx$0.125. Non-Fermi liquid behavior with $C/T \propto$log($T^*/T$) is observed close to $x_c$, indicating the existence of strong quantum fluctuations, while the $T$-linear behavior observed upon pressurizing the parent compound is absent in the resistivity, which appears to be a consequence of the disorder induced by silicon doping. Our findings provide evidence for the role played by disorder on the unusual ferromagnetic quantum criticality in CeRh$_6$Ge$_4$, and provides further evidence for understanding the origin of this behavior.

NbReSi: A Noncentrosymetric Superconductor with Large Upper Critical Field

We report the discovery of superconductivity in noncentrosymmetric NbReSi, which crystallizes in a hexagonal ZrNiAl-type crystal structure with space group $P\bar{6}2m$ (No.~189). Bulk superconductivity, with $T_c$ = 6.5 K was characterized via electrical-resistivity, magnetization, and heat-capacity measurements. The low-temperature electronic specific heat suggests a fully gapped superconducting state in NbReSi, while a large upper critical field of $μ_0H_\mathrm{c2}(0)$ $\sim$ 12.6 T is obtained, which is comparable to the weak-coupling Pauli limit. The electronic band-structure calculations show that the density of states at the Fermi level are dominated by Re and Nb $d$-orbitals, with a sizeable band splitting induced by the antisymmetric spin-orbit coupling. NbReSi represents another candidate material for revealing the puzzle of time-reversal symmetry breaking observed in some Re-based superconductors and its relation to the lack of inversion symmetry.

Complex magnetic phase diagram in noncentrosymmetric EuPtAs

We report the observation of multiple magnetic transitions in single crystals of EuPtAs using magnetization, transport, and thermodynamic measurements. EuPtAs crystallizes in the noncentrosymmetric tetragonal LaPtSi-type structure (space group I41md) and undergoes a second-order antiferromagnetic transition at 14.8 K, which is followed by a first-order transition at about 7.5 K. Both transitions are suppressed by magnetic fields applied parallel and perpendicular to the c axis, and multiple field-induced transitions are observed for both field directions, leading to complex temperature-field diagrams with a dome-like magnetic phase for fields parallel to the c axis. Moreover, the dependence of the low temperature resistivity on the application of a training field, but the lack of remanent magnetization, suggests the presence of multiple antiferromagnetic domains in zero-field.

Magnetic order and crystalline electric field excitations of the quantum critical heavy fermion ferromagnet CeRh$_6$Ge$_4$

CeRh$_6$Ge$_4$ is an unusual example of a stoichiometric heavy fermion ferromagnet, which can be cleanly tuned by hydrostatic pressure to a quantum critical point. In order to understand the origin of this anomalous behavior, we have characterized the magnetic ordering and crystalline electric field (CEF) scheme of this system. While magnetic Bragg peaks are not resolved in neutron powder diffraction, coherent oscillations are observed in zero-field $μ$SR below $T_{\rm C}$, which are consistent with in-plane ferromagnetic ordering consisting of reduced Ce moments. From analyzing the magnetic susceptibility and inelastic neutron scattering, we propose a CEF-level scheme which accounts for the easy-plane magnetocrystalline anisotropy, where the low lying first excited CEF exhibits significantly stronger hybridization than the ground state. These results suggest that the orbital anisotropy of the ground state and low lying excited state doublets are important for realizing anisotropic electronic coupling between the $f$- and conduction electrons, which gives rise to the highly anisotropic hybridization observed in photoemission experiments.

Fully gapped superconductivity with preserved time reversal symmetry in noncentrosymmetric LaPdIn

We report an investigation of the superconducting properties of the hexagonal noncentrosymmetric compound LaPdIn. Electrical resistivity, specific heat and ac susceptibility measurements demonstrate the presence of bulk superconductivity below $T_c$ = 1.6 K. The specific heat, together with the penetration depth measured using transverse-field muon spin rotation and the tunnel diode oscillator based method, are well described by single gap $s$-wave superconductivity, with a gap magnitude of 1.8$k_BT_c$. From zero-field muon spin relaxation results no evidence is found for the spontaneous emergence of magnetic fields in the superconducting state, indicating that time-reversal symmetry is preserved. Band structure calculations reveal that there is a relatively weak effect of antisymmetric spin-orbit coupling on the electronic bands near the Fermi level, which is consistent with there being negligible singlet-triplet mixing due to broken inversion symmetry. On the other hand, isostructural LuPdIn and LaPtIn do not exhibit superconductivity down to 0.4 K, which may be due to these systems having a smaller density of states at the Fermi level.

Nodeless superconductivity in the centro- and noncentrosymmetric rhenium-boron superconductors

We report a comprehensive study of the centrosymmetric Re$_3$B and noncentrosymmetric Re$_7$B$_3$ superconductors. At a macroscopic level, their bulk superconductivity (SC), with $T_c$ = 5.1 K (Re$_3$B) and 3.3 K (Re$_7$B$_3$), was characterized via electrical-resistivity, magnetization, and heat-capacity measurements, while their microscopic superconducting properties were investigated by means of muon-spin rotation/relaxation ($μ$SR). In both Re$_3$B and Re$_7$B$_3$ the low-$T$ zero-field electronic specific heat and the superfluid density (determined via tranverse-field $μ$SR) suggest a nodeless SC. Both compounds exhibit some features of multigap SC, as evidenced by temperature-dependent upper critical fields $H_\mathrm{c2}(T)$, as well as by electronic band-structure calculations. The absence of spontaneous magnetic fields below the onset of SC, as determined from zero-field $μ$SR measurements, indicates a preserved time-reversal symmetry in the superconducting state of both Re$_3$B and Re$_7$B$_3$. Our results suggest that a lack of inversion symmetry and the accompanying antisymmetric spin-orbit coupling effects are not essential for the occurrence of multigap SC in these rhenium-boron compounds.

Unveiling the Hybridization Process in a Quantum Critical Ferromagnet by Ultrafast Optical Spectroscopy

We report the ultrafast optical pump-probe spectroscopy measurements on the recently discovered quantum critical ferromagnet CeRh$_6$Ge$_4$. Our experimental results reveal the two-stage development of the hybridization between localized $f$ moments and conduction electrons with lowering temperature, as evidenced by (1) the presence of hybridization fluctuation for temperatures from $\sim$85 K ($T^*$) to $\sim$140 K ($T^\dagger$), and (2) the emergence of collective hybridization below the coherence temperature, $T^*$, marked by the opening of an indirect gap of 2$Δ$ $\approx$12 meV. We also observe three coherent phonon modes being softened anomalously below $T^*$, reflecting directly their coupling with the emergent coherent heavy electrons. Our findings establish the universal nature of the hybridization process in different heavy fermion systems.

Nodeless superconductivity in the charge density wave superconductor LaPt$_2$Si$_2$

We have studied the superconducting gap structure of LaPt$_2$Si$_2$ by measuring the temperature dependence of the London penetration depth shift $Δλ(T)$ and point contact spectroscopy of single crystals. $Δλ(T)$ shows an exponential temperature dependence at low temperatures, and the derived normalized superfluid density $ρ_{s}(T)$ can be well described by a single-gap s-wave model. The point-contact conductance spectra can also be well fitted by an s-wave Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk model, where the gap value shows a typical BCS temperature and magnetic field dependence consistent with type-II superconductivity. These results suggest fully gapped superconductivity in LaPt$_2$Si$_2$, with moderately strong electron-phonon coupling.

Nodeless superconductivity in Lu$_{5-x}$Rh$_6$Sn$_{18+x}$ with broken time reversal symmetry

Evidence for broken time reversal symmetry (TRS) has been found in the superconducting states of the $R_5$Rh$_6$Sn$_{18}$ (R = Sc, Y, Lu) compounds with a centrosymmetric caged crystal structure, but the origin of this phenomenon is unresolved. Here we report neutron diffraction measurements of single crystals with $R$=Lu, as well as measurements of the temperature dependence of the magnetic penetration depth using a self-induced tunnel diode-oscillator (TDO) based technique, together with band structure calculations using density functional theory. Neutron diffraction measurements reveal that the system crystallizes in a tetragonal caged structure, and that one of nominal Lu sites in the Lu$_5$Rh$_6$Sn$_{18}$ structure is occupied by Sn, yielding a composition Lu$_{5-x}$Rh$_6$Sn$_{18+x}$ ($x=1$). The low temperature penetration depth shift $Δλ(T)$ exhibits an exponential temperature dependence below around $0.3T_c$, giving clear evidence for fully gapped superconductivity. The derived superfluid density is reasonably well accounted for by a single gap $s$-wave model, whereas agreement cannot be found for models of TRS breaking states with two-component order parameters. Moreover, band structure calculations reveal multiple bands crossing the Fermi level, and indicate that the aforementioned TRS breaking states would be expected to have nodes on the Fermi surface, in constrast to the observations.
